Exercise: 7 benefits of regular
physical activity
You know exercise is good for you — but do you know how good? From boosting your
mood to improving your sex life, find out how exercise can improve your life.
By Mayo Clinic staff
Want to feel better, have more energy and perhaps
even live longer? Look no further than old-fashioned
exercise.
The merits of regular physical activity — from preventing
chronic health conditions to promoting weight loss
and better sleep — are hard to ignore. And the
benefits are yours for the taking, regardless of age, sex
or physical ability. Need more convincing? Check out
seven specific ways exercise can improve your life.
1. Exercise improves your mood.
Need to blow off some steam after a stressful day? A
workout at the gym or a brisk 30-minute walk can help
you calm down.
Physical activity stimulates various brain chemicals that
may leave you feeling happier and more relaxed than
you were before you worked out. You’ll also look better
and feel better when you exercise regularly, which can
boost your confidence and improve your self-esteem.
Regular physical activity can even help prevent
depression.
2. Exercise combats chronic diseases.
Worried about heart disease? Hoping to prevent
osteoporosis? Physical activity might be the ticket.
Regular physical activity can help you prevent — or
manage — high blood pressure. Your cholesterol will
benefit, too. Regular physical activity boosts highdensity
lipoprotein (HDL), or “good,” cholesterol while
decreasing triglycerides. This one-two punch keeps
your blood flowing smoothly by lowering the buildup of
plaque in your arteries.
And there’s more. Regular physical activity can help you
prevent type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and certain types
of cancer.
3. Exercise helps you manage your weight.
Want to drop those excess pounds? Trade some couch
time for walking or other physical activities.
This one’s a no-brainer. When you engage in physical
activity, you burn calories. The more intense the activity,
the more calories you burn — and the easier it is to
keep your weight under control. You don’t even need
to set aside major chunks of time for working out. Take
the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk during your lunch
break. Do jumping jacks during commercials. Better
yet, turn off the TV and take a brisk walk. Dedicated
workouts are great, but physical activity you accumulate
throughout the day helps you burn calories, too.
4. Exercise boosts your energy level.
Winded by grocery shopping or household chores?
Throw in the towel. Regular physical activity can leave
you breathing easier.
Physical activity delivers oxygen and nutrients to your
tissues. In fact, regular physical activity helps your
entire cardiovascular system — the circulation of blood
through your heart and blood vessels — work more
efficiently. Big deal? You bet! When your heart and lungs
work more efficiently, you’ll have more energy to do the
things you enjoy.
5. Exercise promotes better sleep.
Struggling to fall asleep? Or stay asleep? It might help
to boost your physical activity during the day.
A good night’s sleep can improve your concentration,
productivity and mood. And you guessed it — physical
activity is sometimes the key to better sleep. Regular
physical activity can help you fall asleep faster and
deepen your sleep. There’s a caveat, however. If you
exercise too close to bedtime, you may be too energized
to fall asleep. If you’re having trouble sleeping,
you might want to exercise earlier in the day.
6. Exercise can put the spark back into your sex life.
Are you too tired to have sex? Or feeling too out of
shape to enjoy physical intimacy? Physical activity to
the rescue.
Regular physical activity can leave you feeling energized
and looking better, which may have a positive effect on
your sex life. But there’s more to it than that. Regular
physical activity can lead to enhanced arousal for women,
and men who exercise regularly are less likely to have
problems with erectile dysfunction than men who don’t
exercise — especially as they get older.
7. Exercise can be — gasp — fun!
Wondering what to do on a Saturday afternoon? Looking
for an activity that suits the entire family? Get physical!
Physical activity doesn’t have to be drudgery. Take a
ballroom dancing class. Check out a local climbing wall
or hiking trail. Push your kids on the swings or climb with
them on the jungle gym. Plan a neighborhood kickball
or touch football game. Find a physical activity you
enjoy, and go for it. If you get bored, try something new.
If you’re moving, it counts!
Are you convinced? Good. Start reaping the
benefits of regular physical activity today!
Ab Lab – Friday September 9 – 10:30am, Monday November 7 – 8:00pm, Monday January
9 – 8:00pm, Monday May 7 – 8:00pm
Your core is the foundation of everything you do. The muscles that make up your core go way beyond your six
pack. In order to effectively train your abdominals, first you must understand the basic anatomy and function of
all the muscles that make up what we commonly call our “Abs”. This workshop will teach you how to train your
abdominals in the most functional way for trunk support and the most effective way to develop strength while
reducing stress on surrounding joints and muscles.
Back On Track – Friday January 27 – 10:30am
In order to improve your overall strength and posture it is mandatory to train the muscles in your entire back. It
has been said “you are only as young as your spine” and anyone who has suffered from back pain knows this to
be true. Learn how to effectively train your back to prevent injury and stand tall.
Functionally Fit – Monday February 6 – 8:00pm
This workshop will introduce and analyze fitness as it is applied to everyday movement. It will discuss and
demonstrate the benefits of integrated movement to not only help you achieve optimal fitness for daily life but
also to keep your workouts FUN.
F.I.T.T. – Frequency Intensity Time Type – Friday February 24 – 10:30am
your workouts fresh, fun and effective by applying the FITT principle.
It’s Better On A BOSU – Friday November 25 – 10:30am, Monday March 5 – 8:00pm
Find out how this handy tool named for its ability to be used with BOth Sides Up can help you take basic
movements and turn them into FUN exercises while increasing intensity and better utilizing core stabilizers. The
BOSU adds variety and balance training to otherwise boring and simple routines.
Balls and Bands – Monday September 19 – 8:00pm, Friday March 23 – 10:30am
Whether its rubber tubing, medicine balls, stability balls or tennis balls, find out how simple and versatile pieces
of equipment can take your workouts to a whole new level by adding variety, increasing the FUN factor, better
utilizing core stabilizers and increasing intensity.
Posture Perfect! – Friday October 7 – 10:30am, Monday April 2 – 8:00pm
Posture is built before, during, and after your workouts. Have you ever heard the saying “how you do one thing
is how you do everything”? This definitely applies to your posture while training, standing, sitting, stretching or
walking. Performing all your exercises in proper posture will improve your posture in daily life. Learn how to
strengthen, stretch, and engage key posture muscles by using proper technique while training.
Rock & Roll – Monday October 17 – 8:00pm, Friday April 27 – 10:30am
The foam roller has many functions in the gym but one of its most valuable contributions to your workout and
recovery process is how it can be used for myofascial release. This workshop will highlight the importance of
releasing the tissue that forms the outside mesh-like layer around all the muscles in the body. Learn techniques
for fascia release and how to target specific areas that could be causing tension and inhibition in the body.
GROUP FITNESS “LEARN TO” SERIES:
These ½ hr workshops have been designed to help integrate new participants into our group fitness classes and
also to help existing participants improve their technique and answer any questions you may have regarding
exercises commonly found in many of our classes. These workshops are free to all HRC members and will be
highly interactive. Please sign up in advance for the workshop(s) of your choice.
Learn to Ride – Wednesday September 14 – 6:30pm, Wednesday November 16 – 6:30pm,
Wednesday January 18 – 6:30pm, Friday April 13 – 10:30am
Since the early 90’s indoor cycling classes have been providing superior cardiovascular conditioning to people
of all ages. While these classes are a great tool to train the heart, they can sometimes be intimidating to new
exercisers. This workshop will walk you through proper bike set up, riding techniques to help you get the most
effective workout, safety concerns and ultimately how to make your experience fun and successful, regardless
of your fitness level.
Learn to Flow – Friday September 30 – 10:30am, Wednesday November 30 – 7:00pm,
Friday February 3 – 10:30am, Wednesday April 18 – 7:00pm
Yoga and Pilates provide a solid foundation for a healthy body by strengthening deep core stabilizers, training
balance, flexibility and muscular endurance. Everybody can and should benefit from these movements, exercises
and postures as they will improve all aspects of life including mental clarity, focus and internal healing as well as
physical development. Understanding the basic principles and movement patterns will help you get the most out
of your next yoga or Group Centergy® class.
Learn to Lift – Wednesday October 12 – 7:00pm, Friday December 9 – 10:30am, Wednesday
February 15 – 7:00pm, Friday May 4 – 10:30am
Weight training is a mandatory component of any fitness regime. The ongoing success of our Group Power®
classes proves that not only do our members love it, but they see results. However, weight training classes done
consistently but incorrectly can cause injury that is avoidable and preventable. Although our instructors are
extremely well qualified to teach these classes it is difficult for them to maintain consistent safety and technique
with each and every participant throughout the class. This workshop will enable you to have your movement
patterns reviewed by a trainer and corrected if necessary thus lessening the risk of potential injury in the future.
Learn to Kick – Wednesday October 26 – 7:00pm, Friday January 6 – 10:30am
Group Kick® incorporates many facets of martial arts training in a fitness class format. Although technique is not
evaluated, and this class is based on a fun and effective cardiovascular workout the patterning can be confusing
and complicated for beginners. With improved technique participants also find they get a better workout due to
proper muscle recruitment during kicks, punches and strikes. This workshop will break down the movements
found in a Group Kick® class at a slower, more controlled pace therefore making it easier for participants to learn
and execute the movements safely and effectively.
Learn to Move – Friday November 4 – 10:30am, Wednesday December 21 – 7:00pm,
Wednesday March 14 – 7:00pm, Friday June 1 – 10:30am
ZUMBA! ZUMBA! ZUMBA! This seems to be the big BUZZ word in fitness these days and for good reason. Zumba
has made fitness FUN and ACCESSIBLE for people of all ages, genders, races, and fitness levels. It is said that
“dance is the universal language” and in Zumba classes which are held worldwide to smiling, laughing, excited
participants this is obviously true. The fitness industry has tapped into this Latin infused fitness dance party and
taken the stress out of ‘sweat’. There is no right or wrong way to do Zumba but for those of you who would like
to have a better understanding of some of the steps often found in a Zumba class this workshop is for you.
Boot Camps:
Create Go Muscles… not Show Muscles!
If you’ve ever experienced a weight loss plateau, you realize how your body can adjust to a diet and fitness
program and stall your weight loss efforts. Despite the fact that you watch what you eat and walk on the treadmill
daily, those stubborn pounds just won’t seem to budge. Although walking, if done at a rapid pace, is a good fat
burning workout, sometimes you need to shake up your fitness routine to start seeing results again. One way to
do this is with boot camps!
What exactly is a boot camp workout? Boot camp workouts are exercise sessions that challenge every muscle in
your body. By rapidly moving from exercise to exercise with little rest in between, you tone and firm muscles while
getting a good cardiovascular workout at the same time. Plus, it’s a lot more cost effective than personal training!
Beginner Boot Camp:
Beginner Boot Camp is designed for new participants looking for the benefits of a boot camp but at a less intense
pace. A good place to start getting fit!
Therapy Options:
Kourtney Livingston:
Individual Stretch and Soft Tissue Release Session:
Soft Tissue Release (STR) sessions are perfect for anyone looking to increase range of motion and flexibility and
heal from injury. STR is a combination of myofascial release, therapeutic massage and active assisted stretching.
The technique involves applying pressure during a specific stretch. The goal is to appeal to the autonomic nervous
system which leads to a spontaneous release of an injured muscle.
½ Hour Soft Tissue Release: Member: $40.00 Non Member: $50.00
Individual Soft Tissue Release Sessions combined with Personal Training:
Combining STR with Personal Training is beneficial for clients who want to increase the benefits and results of
their PT sessions. The result of this technique is a fast and permanent reorganization of the muscle fibers into
their original resting length. Imbalances are corrected, muscle pain is decreased and muscle performance is
improved when incorporating STR with an active lifestyle. Anyone who has been injured in sports, at work, or who
has injuries that have occurred over time can benefit from STR.
Therapeutic Yoga:
Therapeutic Yoga in particular teaches you how to understand the whispers in your body (before they become
screams) by using simple and highly effective principles of movement and props. A session is ideal for anyone
who is continuously revolving in pain, tension, weakness, default and holding patterns. In just one session you
begin to witness the emergence of more space, to source strength via ease, and gain a better understanding
of your body’s tendencies. 0The results are often surprising and always beneficial to all your daily and physical
pursuits.
