Armagh Planetarium is a multifaceted organisation dedicated to astronomy
education for all levels, from nursery through to retirement age. It is the
Planetarium’s unique ability to adapt to changing audience needs that has enabled it
to stay at the forefront of science education since its formation.
Armagh Planetarium offers a curriculum-broadening experience for school visitors
and our educational programme has been designed to dovetail with the new
curriculum. Our aim is to demonstrate to our visitors the amazing objects that exist
in the cosmos, but to do it in such a way that they do not see our efforts as formal
teaching. We call this ‘learning by stealth’.
Armagh Public Library is the oldest library in Northern Ireland, founded
in 1771 by Archbishop Richard Robinson as part of his plans to establish
a university. The nucleus of the collection is Archbishop Robinson’s
own library, containing 17th and 18th century books on many subjects.
Also a registered museum, the Library holds ancient Irish artefacts such
as stone axes, flint arrowheads and bronze implements.
The library also holds resources to aid family history research.
Built in 1772 as the Diocesan Registry to hold records for the Church
of Ireland Diocese, this Grade A listed building has been restored and
is open to the public. While the records are no longer retained in the
building, examples are on display, with ancient coins, gems, significant
prints, early Christian artefacts and other collections and curiosities
which belong to Armagh Public Library. There are also opportunities to
explore the collections in more detail, through the use of touch screens.
This deceptively large building, which resembles a modest dwelling
from the outside, has a fascinating interior, retains many of its original
features and will appeal to all age groups.
Armagh City Centre
Public Art Trail
If you enjoy cities and walking, but want to find a way
to make it interesting for others who don’t, including
young children, then Armagh City’s Public Art may be
exactly the answer. Take a wander around the City
Centre and enjoy our historic streetscape through
engaging with our artworks.
“StarStone” by Richard Perry
Location: Market Square
This amazingly tactile 5.5m high sculpture made
entirely of local Armagh Marble sits in front of the
modern architectural lines of the Market Place
Theatre. The inspiration for StarStone comes from
Armagh’s long curiosity with the night sky, but also
the way its Cathedrals seemingly reach for the sky
from the hills on which the City is built. It provides a
sense of the ancientness of Armagh, using local stone
and real craftsmanship. If you look closely, you can
find tiny fossils formed in the Armagh stone millions
of years ago.
“Gargoyles and Angels Miniature Sculpture
Trail” by Holger Christian Lonze
Location: Various
These 22 miniature bronze sculptures hidden around
the streets have got children excited as they embark
on an Indiana Jones style adventure to track them all
down. The curious humorous creatures, which are the
work of artist Holger Lonze, are hidden in all kinds of
curious places amongst the city’s historic buildings,
architecture and streets. Find them get up to all kinds
of mischief, escaping, climbing and playing with
things they’ve found on the street - or stolen from
inside the buildings.
“Market Days and Fair Days” by Eleanor Wheeler
Location: Market Square
Armagh Visitor Guide
Situated in Market Square, the centre of Commerce
in Armagh City for hundreds of years, this handmodelled
ceramic wall art depicts the traditional
‘journey’ to market from country to city and celebrates
the humanity and humour of markets and fairs. The
panels depict some of the produce taken to market
– animals, grain, flax and flowers – as well as some of
the musicians, storytellers and rhymers that would
have entertained the crowds.
Public Art Trail
“Celestial Sphere” by Brian Connolly
Location: Upper English Street
The brightest stars and other features of the night sky have been mapped onto
this large 2 metre diameter sphere, made from solid polished grey granite.
The sphere with its gold stars is aligned to the north with the stars correctly
orientated towards the pole star. The Celestial Sphere is set on top of four grey
granite stones engraved with imagery and other information about the history
of Astronomy and moon landings from earliest times up to the present.
“For the Love of Emer” by Martin Heron
Location: Scotch Street | Dobbin Street
This 9 metre tall stainless steel sculpture by Martin Heron depicts the famous
Irish Hero Cuchulainn, as he goes to the Isle of Skye to learn the art of balancing
on the butt of a spear or the rim of a shield. All this effort was an attempt to
prove himself to the father of Emer who he wanted to marry. You can find out
more about the story of Cuchulainn and Emer at the Navan Centre & Fort.
“Saints and Scholars Railings” by David Dudgeon
Location: Dobbin Street Lane | Friary Road
These railings are inspired by the legacy of Saint Patrick, referencing the
intricate architecture of our two Cathedrals as well as the Celtic imagery of the
‘Book of Armagh’. The railings employ a contemporary approach to traditional
wrought iron work using a variety of different grades and weights of metal.
The end result is a stunning visual artwork stimulating debate on many aspects
of our ecclesiastical heritage.
Saint Patrick’s Festival
Week of 17th March
44|45
Armagh International Road Race
February
This event organised by Armagh
Athletic Club supported by Armagh
City and District Council began life
in 1990 as part of International Sport
and Cultural week linking it to a
series of events throughout Ireland.
This cross border link has enabled
the pooling of scarce resources to
secure each year the participation
not alone of hundreds of local
athletes but also athletes of the
highest elite standards from all over
the World including Europe, United
States and Africa.
This combination of participation
and elite performance has made this
event in recent years one of the most
significant road races on the
International Calendar with athletes
from all over Europe and the United
States vying for invitations to take
part. In recent years the Men’s 5k has
been described as the ‘greatest indepth
5K Road Race in the World’.
The programme consists of 12 races
staged on The Mall 1000m circuit
creating an unforgettable spectacle
complemented by the unique public
and church architecture of the Mall
set off by floodlighting.
www.armaghroadrace.com
Armagh has a proud link with Saint
Patrick which is why the area places
itself in the centre of Saint Patrick’s
celebrations. Armagh was the location
for Saint Patrick’s first church in Ireland,
he founded his Church where the
current Saint Patrick’s Church of Ireland
Cathedral stands.
The City has two magnificent Saint
Patrick’s Cathedrals and the legacy of
Patrick is visible across the City.
There is a week-long festival catering for
all audiences. Armagh is a cultural hub
that has a thriving theatre, pedestrianfriendly
City Centre and an array of
quality cafes and restaurants for all to
enjoy.
With the 17th March as the main event
which takes the form of a carnival
parade with cultural entertainment.
Armagh is Saint Patrick’s Chosen City
and is therefore the ideal place to spend
this key holiday period.
Apple Blossom Festival
May
The Apple Blossom Festival takes place
in May each year, and centres on the
Manor Estate and Country Park in
Loughgall. There are numerous events
across the District at this time.
Armagh is known as the Orchard
County and towards the north of the
county every hillside is covered almost
exclusively with rows of Bramley apples.
In early May during the Apple Blossom
event the hillsides are in full bloom with
white and pink blossom that lasts for
only a short while.
Armagh Bramley Apple enjoys an
unrivalled reputation for fruit firmness,
colour and keeping quality. The Fruit
Industry Federation has applied to the
European Union for ‘Armagh Bramley’
to be awarded Protected Geographical
Indicator [PGI] status.
Bramleys are cooking apples used for
a variety of produce such as juice or
cider and the Apple Blossom event
presents to the public how to cook their
famous apple. Apple Blossom gives the
general public the unique opportunity
to see how the Armagh Bramley apple
industry still values quality and best
practice as an integral part of orchard
production.
John Hewitt International
Summer School, July
The John Hewitt Society was formed
in 1987 to commemorate the life and
work of the renowned Northern Irish
poet who died that year. The Summer
School is an internationally renowned
festival of literature and the arts. The
School adopts a specific theme each
year and provides a safe, neutral and
unthreatening space to explore these
themes.
The School takes place in the
wonderful, modern surroundings of the
Marketplace Theatre and Arts Centre
in Armagh. Each year it attracts people
from all over Ireland, Britain, Europe and
the United States.
people from all communities to
live, work and socialise together
throughout the week, encouraging
interdependence. In order to maximise
participation, the School works in
partnership with local councils, arts
Road Bowls
August
According to the rules of the Bol
Chumann na hÉireann , the Irish
Road Bowling Association, the
road bowler throws a 28-ounce
[1.75 pounds or 800 grams] castiron
sphere that looks like a small
cannonball.
Today’s solid steel projectile is
called a ‘bowl’ in County Cork, but
in County Armagh fans call it a
‘bullet’. As in golf, the road bowler
tries to move the bullet or bowl
from the start to the finish of a predetermined
course in as few drives
or throws as possible.
Road bowling is technically difficult,
yet it’s an inexpensive sport
requiring only a road that provides
the course and the bullet itself. It has
very ancient origins in the County of
Armagh.
Today road bowling is a popular
competitive sport where it is played,
but the most vigorous competitions
are in two Irish Counties: Armagh
and Cork.
Charles Wood
Summer School
August
Charles Wood, the renowned
musician and composer, was born at
11, Vicars’ Hill, Armagh in 1866 and
received his early musical education
as a chorister in the Cathedral
opposite his home. He later studied
at the Royal College of Music and
later became a Professor of music at
Cambridge University.
When Wood died in 1926, he left
behind a legacy of over 250 sacred
works including hymn tunes, songs,
music for Greek plays and chamber
music. It is largely his sacred music
that he is remembered today and
this is why the focus of the Summer
School is music in worship.
7 Hills Blues Fest
August
Already an established event on
the Blues calendar, this event grows
each year providing musical therapy
for all ages. From Chicago Rhythm,
to Funk Style this festival brings
some of the finest Blues bands to
the atmospheric streets of Armagh.
Local bands take their place amongst
top class international acts from
across Europe, USA and further afield
ensuring that 7 Hills Festival goers
are in for a real treat! Fringe events
add an artistic and family-orientated
buzz to the Festival, with eateries and
shops getting involved to bring a real
Blues feel to the whole City Centre. A
The Mall
The Mall or Commons has been
central to the leisure activities of
Armagh’s citizens for over 200 years.
From 1731- 1773 it was a horseracing
course with monthly trading
fairs in the central area. In 1765
Archbishop Robinson arrived and
began a plan to redevelop Armagh
as a city to rival Dublin.
The Commons and its raucous
pursuits did not fit in with the
Archbishop’s vision for a new city. He
gifted the new mall to the citizens of
Armagh as a public walkway. Over
the years the tree-lined promenade
became an area for sports such as
cricket, football and rugby.
Care of the Mall was left in the hands
of the Mall Trustees, and by 2003 a
partnership was formed along with
Armagh City and District Council.
The Heritage Lottery Fund granted
an award for refurbishment which
aimed to update the facilities of
the Mall without losing its unique
character. In 2005 the Mall won
the Civic Trust Award and the Irish
Architecture Award.
The Armagh Observatory Grounds and Astropark
The Armagh Observatory is a modern astronomical research institute, the
oldest scientific institution in Northern Ireland, founded by Archbishop
Richard Robinson in 1790. It stands in approximately 14 acres of attractive,
landscaped gardens which are opened throughout the year. A walk through
the Astropark is a stroll through the Universe, with the path beginning near
to the Planetarium car park and leading to a scale model of the Solar System
in which every three paces corresponds to 100 million km in space.
Saint Patrick’s Church of Ireland Cathedral Gardens
The gardens at the Saint Patrick’s Church of Ireland Cathedral consist of a
monastic herb garden laid out in the simple pattern employed by the early
Christian monasteries. The gardens are accessible from Market Street as well
as the main entrance to the Cathedral. Opening hours are 10.00am to 4.00pm
The Palace Demesne and
the ‘Garden of the Senses’
Saint Patrick’s Catholic
Cathedral Gardens
Argory
Gardens
68|69
For over two hundred years the undulating parkland of the
Palace Demesne has been one of the glories of Armagh.
The Demesne, comprising some 300 acres, is the creation of
Archbishop Richard Robinson. The Palace was the residence of
the Archbishops of the Church of Ireland from 1770 to 1975.
The walks around the Demesne vary in distance and effort
required, taking you into the back meadows and around the
more formal Palace Gardens.
The ‘Garden of the Senses’ is no ordinary garden; rather a
sensory experience that will appeal to both able-bodied and
disabled visitors. Made up of five distinct areas which are linked
by a winding path, the garden offers a veritable feast for the
five senses. There is a seated area to relax in and listen to the
gentle sound of the fountains. Call 028 3752 9655 to book a
guided tour of the Palace Stables.
The gardens at Saint Patrick’s
Catholic Cathedral have evolved
over more than 100 years. When the
Cathedral was consecrated in July
1904, Archbishop Daniel McGettigan
had the seven-terrace flight of steps
constructed from the Cathedral
gates to the piazza in front of the
Great West Door. The gardens are
open to the public every day and
are found on the approach to the
Cathedral on either side of the main
steps.
www.armagharchdiocese.org
The Pleasure Gardens feature
many interesting plants including
specimens from the ‘Springer’
collection.
There are two pavilions at the
corners of the Pleasure Gardens and
two delightful Victorian arbours. A
path leads through to the beautiful
rose garden with its regimented box
hedges and a fascinating sundial
dating back to the 1820’s
The delightful Rose Garden was
replanted in 2000 with a mixture of
varieties of Irish roses alongside a
variety of Floribundas. In the walled
garden, within the farmyard, there
are planted many varieties of old
Irish apple trees. The Ladies’ Walk
provides a perimeter path around
the grounds.
Gosford Forest Park, formerly
Gosford Demesne, comprises some
240 hectares of diverse woodland
and open parkland set in gentle
rolling drumlin countryside. The
park contains a large collection of
traditional breeds of poultry and rare
breeds of farm animals, and a herd of
red deer.
Loughgall Country Park
Loughgall Country Park features an
18-hole golf course, way-marked
Orchards...
Armagh is renowned as the ‘Orchard
County’ or the ‘Orchard of Ireland’. The
area comes alive with colour as the
pink flowers of the apple trees blanket
much of the deep green landscape.
There is a history of apple growing in
Armagh dating back 3000 years.
Saint Patrick planted an apple tree at
Ceangoba, an ancient settlement east
of the city.
Today more than 4000 acres of
Armagh are covered by apple trees.
Approximately 90% of these crops are
bramley apples which are harvested
here in County Armagh, and then
exported to the rest of the world.
