SHOWMANSHIP SF.MINAR—Marcus Theatres executives and of the Marcus Corp., stands in the center (front) flanked by
managers from 66 hardtops and drive-ins attended the annual Marcus Theatres chairman of the board Henry Toilette (in light
showmanship campaign seminar held recently at the Pfister Hotel, gray suit) on his left and Richard L. Kite, president of Marcus
Milwaukee. Ben Marcus, chairman of the board and president Iheatres, on his right.
Man Underscores Contempt
For X Films With Shotgun
OSHKOSH, WIS.—A man entered the
Grand Theatre here on a recent Monday
evening with a shotgun and fired three
blasts into the screen. Patrons generally fled
to the outside of the theatre, although some
retreated hastily to the basement.
The gunman, Gerald Frey, 34, stated he
was "registering his dislike for X-rated films
and their effect on young people."
Police officials said Frey had left the
theatre after watching a part of the movie.
He returned with a shotgun a short time
later, accompanied by a hunting dog. A
theatre employee immediately phoned police
for assistance as Frey aimed his weapon
and fired toward the screen.
Frey was arrested and charged with
"reckless use of a weapon and criminal
damage to property."
Starlite Outdoor Theatre
Robbed by Lone Gunman
MILWAUKEE — The Starlite
Outdoor
Theatre on Highway 145 in suburban Menomonee
Falls was robbed July 17 at approximately
10:55 p.m. A man approximately
30 years of age, wearing a nylon
stocking over his head, drove to the boxoffice
at the front entrance and pointed a
black revolver at the two female cashiers.
He then handed a blue bank bag to one of
the women with orders to "fill it up."
After ordering both women to lie on the
floor, the gunman drove away, escaping
with a sum estimated at between $40 and
$100.
The cashiers, one a 29-year-old Milwaukee
woman and the other a 17-year-old
from New Berlin, gave the Menomonee
Falls police a description of the man and
the car he drove. The New Berlin woman
also was able to aid police in completing
a composite drawing of the suspect.
'Alice in Wonderland'
Hits 375 in Mill City
MINNEAPOLIS—A trio of newcomers
whipped up considerable ticket action as
over-all boxoffice action remained sprightly.
The present screen menu is in sharp contrast
with that of this past spring, when
both picture quality and fan acceptance
were at basement levels. "The Outlaw Josey
Wales" was spread across seven screens
and the Clint Eastwood shoot-'em-up hit the
target with a solid 240. "The Bingo Long
Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings" batted
a hefty 220 at the Orpheum Theatre. And
"Eat My Dust!", hard to avoid with its 16-
screen saturation, made its own dust with a
lively 200. However, "Alice in Wonderland"
still led the block with a super 375 for its
second stint at Skyway III.
Getting a thumbs-down from the paying
customers was "Buffalo Bill and the Indians,"
which sank to a dismal 60 in only its
third week at the Brookdale and Southdale
II and was tagged for a speedy trip to the
showers. But among the holdovers, "Silent
Movie" was a talk-worthy 310 in its third
at the World, "The Omen" was still chilling
with a 315 in a fourth at the Skyway I
and "Midway" was booming at the Mann,
a firm 200 in its fifth frame.
DES MOINES — "Midway" continues to
be the big news on Filmrow carrying a solid
400 for its fifth week at the Riviera. "Ode
to Billy Joe" crossed the 200 mark to a
bright 215 closing out its third set in two
theatres. "Murder by Death" ranked close
behind with a sprightly 210 in its fourth
frame in two situations. Two openers, "The
Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor
average business.
Art Gallery to Display,
Sell Animated Film Cels
CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA—An unusual
art gallery is being opened here by new
resident Burt Rudman. He will be displaying
and selling the paintings made to produce
animated cartoons and claims it is
the first such gallery in the nation.
Some 475,000 paintings were made and
photographed to produce the first fulllength
animated film, "Snow White and the
Seven Dwarfs," in the '30s, with 24 paintings
required for each second of film. Because
there were too many to store, most of
the drawings on clear sheets of celluloid
were destroyed. The same fate befell countless
other celluloid drawings, called 'eels,'
from other animated films and cartoons.
The eels still in existence have become
valuable, with many going into museums.
Prices range from $20 (1970s) to $350
for the vintage paintings of the 1930s.
Rudman's collection includes eels from such
Walt Disney films as "Snow White and the
Seven Dwarfs," "Winnie the Pooh." "101
Dalmations," "The Aristocats" and "Peter
Pan." The colorful eels, framed in chrome
under nonglare glass, present a three-dimension
effect.
