FIESTA EVENTS GUIDE APRIL 16-26, 2015

Fiesta is a city-wide celebration initially organized to honor the heroes from the battles of the

Alamo and San Jacinto during which Texas won its independence from Mexico. Each year, Fiesta

week falls on the anniversary of the Battle of San Jacinto, April 21st. During its first year in 1891,

the celebration consisted of one parade. The two week long celebration now includes hundreds

of non-profit groups, multiple parades and diverse events. Here are a few of our favorites:

Texas Cavaliers River Parade

The Texas Cavaliers River Parade

promises an evening of family fun

with live music, celebrities, and

lights as more than 40 festively

decorated floats sponsored by

local community organizations

and military installations drift

down the San Antonio River.

N IOSA

Each year 80,000 visitors gather

at the historic downtown village

of La Villita to celebrate for four

nights the city’s diverse cultures and

unique heritage at “A Night in Old

San Antonio” with food and drink

booths as well as entertainment

stages. NIOSA, the largest historic

preservation festival in the nation,

provides resources for the San

Antonio Conservation Society’s

mission for the restoration and

rehabilitation of historic properties

in the San Antonio area.

Order of the Alamo

Coronation of the Queen

One of the central features of Fiesta

San Antonio, a symphony orchestra

performs the accompaniment as

visiting and in-town Duchesses

make their full-court bows followed

by the presentation of Her Royal

Highness the Princess and the

Coronation of Her Gracious Majesty,

the Queen. After the court is seated

within the magnificent stage setting,

musicians and others entertain

the royalty and the audience.

Fiesta Pooch Parade

Bring your pet and wind your way

through the lovely tree-lined streets

of Alamo Heights in this 5K sureto-be-pleasing,

tail-wagging route.

Come early for special exhibits and

educational presentations that you

and your furry friend can enjoy.

Battle of Flowers Parade

Honoring the heroes of the Alamo,

participants adorned in colorful

costumes parade through downtown

atop flower-covered floats, horsedrawn

carriages and antique cars

while uniformed cavalcades and

marching bands perform their

routines for the delighted spectators.

Mexican Charreria

At “A Day in Old Mexico’s” Charreada,

spectators can watch equestrian

competitions featuring horse

reining, bull riding, and artistic

roping skills, as well as see the

beloved Escaramuza, made up of

young women wearing ranchera

dresses and executing precision

movements while riding sidesaddle.

Alamo Heights Night

The Annual Alamo Heights Night

activities highlight food from

some of San Antonio’s leading

restaurants and caterers. This familyfriendly

atmosphere delivers live

entertainment all night on multiple

stages and the carnival midway

will captivate kids of all ages.

Fiesta Flambeau Parade

The Fiesta Flambeau Parade is one

of the largest illuminated parades

in the US. Traditionally lead by the

University of Texas Longhorn Band,

the parade also features out-of-town

bands, marching and equestrian

units, and many other attractions

to create a night of incredible

entertainment in San Antonio.

King William Fair

Celebrate the history and

diversity of Texas’ first historic

neighborhood as you stroll past

stately Victorian mansions while

enjoying a wide variety of drinks

and fine ethnic cuisine, live music,

dance groups and a small parade.

Fiesta Oyster Bake

The Oyster Bake features more

than 100,000 oysters, served raw,

baked or fried, and over 60 food

booths dish up savory favorites such

as fajitas, sausage on a stick, egg

rolls, hamburgers and chicken on a

stick. Patrons can enjoy continuous

music on five stages while watching

the spectacular firework finale.

Fort Sam Houston Fireworks

The Fort Sam Houston Fiesta

Ceremony & Fireworks Extravaganza

is open to the public and features

carnival rides, food and drink

vendors, live music, games,

children’s activities, and culminates

in a fireworks display at 9pm.

Fiesta Arts Fair

Cited by the American Style

Magazine as “one of American’s best

arts fairs and festivals,” this nationally

recognized juried art fair will bring

together 120 artists from all across

the US, displaying contemporary

ceramics, paintings, jewelry, glass,

photography, sculpture, wearable

art and other high-quality artworks.

Taste of New Orleans

Experience unique and exquisite

New Orleans food in a festive

atmosphere. This three-day, partyfilled

adventure is a family-friendly

event filled with music that will

make you want to dance and party

like you’ve never done before.

Cornyation

Cornyation dates back to 1964,

when it was staged at the Arneson

River Theatre as part of A Night

in Old San Antonio. Its irreverent

pokes at politics and prominent

and not-so-prominent world

events led to its demise as part

of NIOSA. King Anchovy presides

over the festivities surrounding the

duchesses, queens, vice empress and

empress of the court’s bows while

hilarity, nonsense and merriment

escalate as the court unfolds.
