Ira Tulipan has joined Columbia Pictures
as Eastern publicity coordinator headquartered
in the New York offices. He will work
under the direction of Marvin Jay Levy,
director of national publicity operations,
who is based at the Burbank Studios. Tulipan
joined Columbia in 1960 and continued
into the mid-70s when he left the company
while serving as director of overseas production
publicity based in London.

New World Pictures' "Avalanche" will
an official entry in the Greater Miami

Group 1 has acquired worldwide theatrical
and television rights to "Crazy House,"
a film about the wacky and tragic stories
of a group of characters residing in a tenement.
The film is in post-production and is
being prepared for test engagements and release
later in
the year.

"Composition Design in Film" will be offered
on 17 Wednesday evenings beginning
Wednesday (20) at the University of California
with Joe Carmichael. past director
of the Pasadena School of Fine Arts and
Screen bad guy Lee Van Cleef has signed
an exclusive recording contract with Blue
.Seagull Records and producer Jerry Cole
and has been recording two singles, for release
ne.xt month. An LP will follow in
October.

Robert Fichtcr of Santa .Monica will
work as an intern with director Robert Wise
on the production of Paramounl's "Star Trek
—The Motion Picture." The assignment is
part of the American Film Institute/ Academy
of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
internship program.

Steve Hoch has been named national
sales manager for Disneyland-Vista Records,
according to Gary Krisel, vice-president
and general manager of Walt Disney
Music Co. Hoch started with Disney in 1976
as assistant sales manager to Krisel. who
recently became head of all record and music
publishing activities.

Max Factor will sponsor the Society of
Make-Up Artists float in the annual Hollywood
Christmas Parade to take place November
26.

"The Number," first feature project for
Suncrest Cinema Corp.. has completed production
with Roy Boulting directing. The
film stars Richard Harris. Karen Black and
Martin Landau.

Pay TV rights to 16 Charlie Chaplin
movies have been acquired for showing in
Television's ON TV. New .^5mm prints
the Los Angeles area by National Subscription
have been made from Chaplin's negatives
and the films will be shown twice a month
over a six-month period. Among the classic
films are "Circus." "A Day's Pleasure."
"Modern Times." "Gold Rush." "The Kid."
"The Great Dictator" and "Kini; of New
York."

The Larkin Theatre was shuttered again,
perhaps permanently, but the Stage Door,
dark since February 9. reopened .August 25
with "Dear Inspector" and "A Special
Day." Blumenfeld Enterprises has taken
over management from Mel Novikoff of
the Surf Theatres which had operated it
since March '77. According to .Mian Blumenfeld.
plans are to screen movies until
some time next year when a bigger, more
complex "San Francisco Experience" will
take over the screen. The Union Square
area seems to be promised a new tourist
attraction!
SEATTLE
^he North .American premiere engagement
of "The Toy." with Pierre Richard of
"lall Blond Man" fame, began an exclusive
run at the Moore Egyptian August 18, and
during the first week broke all existing records
for this downtown showcase.
Gregory Peck was in the entourage from
2{)lh Centur>-Fox studios when his new film
"The Boys From Brazil" was sneaked at the
UA Cinema 150 August 18. The theatre
was filled to capacity more than an hour
prior to the 8 p.m. sneak, and Peck was
warmly received both before and afterwards.
Sir Lew Grade, the film's producer,
and Alan Ladd jr.. president of 20th-Fo\.
were also on hand.
Don Barrett represented Columbia Pictures
at a special screening of "Midnight
Express" in the Jewel Box screening room
August 24. The reaction of the 55 people
there was most favorable, and people came
from all walks of life as well as all ages.
I'niversal screened "Nunzio" at the Jewel
Box Auyusi 29, and "The Big Fix" August
