MA N A G I N G DI R E C T O R
As we gather here tonight to celebrate the best in film and
television we can reflect on what has truly been one of the
most impressive years.
During the past twelve months members of the Hollywood
Foreign Press Association covered a broad and diverse field
of journalistic activities, many of them made possible by you.
The success of the Golden Globe Awards has also enabled
us to give substantial philanthropic grants and donations
to volunteer organizations providing relief to children in
hospitals and refugee camps, to film preservation, and to
future filmmakers, with over a thousand scholarships so far.
Tonight is equally a salute to them.
On behalf of all members of the Hollywood Foreign Press
Association it is a true honor to welcome you to the 71st
Annual Golden Globe Awards.
Enjoy tonight’s celebration!
...is Miss Golden Globe® 2014
Twenty-one year old Sosie Bacon is the daughter of past Golden Globe winners Kyra Sedgwick
and Kevin Bacon. Sosie began her acting career at the age of eleven when her father cast
her as Kyra’s daughter in Lover Boy, but only on condition she not pursue another acting role
until she was eighteen.
Eight years later, because of that performance she was cast in her mother’s hit series The Closer,
in which she played a character left in the care of her aunt, again played by Sedgwick.
Following that role, Bacon enrolled at Brown University but has always taken time in the
summer to work on her acting. She has studied at CAP 21 Summer Conservatory and New
York Film Academy Summer Conservatory.
Last summer she joined the cast of “Fiction in Photographs,” an off-Broadway musical. Sosie
will next be seen in the independent thriller Off Season directed by Robert Cole.
Martin Scorsese
Theo Kingma HFPA President
Blair Underwood
A n overflow crowd, crammed into the Beverly
Hills Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton, cheered
incoming president Theo Kingma when he showed
a three-minute clip documenting the heartfelt
appreciation of past recipients of the Hollywood
Foreign Press grants given by our Trustees.
This year’s total exceeded $1,800,000.
Theo wanted this to be a fun outing and by
enlisting Jody Hill, Vince Vaughn, and Jason
Liam Hemsworth & Amber Heard
Bateman, a good time was had by all. Not
to take anything away from Nicole Kidman
who graciously accepted our largest grant on
behalf of the Film Foundation.
Martin Scorsese also acknowledged via video the
important role the HFPA has played over the past
thirteen years in film preservation.
Theo’s opening remarks heralded a new future for
Vin Diesel
the Association emphasizing hard journalism
over conventional Hollywood stories. He also
introduced the new officers: Vice President
Lorenzo Soria, Treasurer Meher Tatna, Executive
Secretary Lilly Lui; and Board members Yoram
Kahana (Chairman), Vera Anderson, Luca
Celada, Helen Hoehne, Aida Takla-O’Reilly,
and (alternate) Jack Tewksbury.
After which Eva Longoria took over the proceedings

behalf of 26 non-profits and educational institutions.
New father Vince Vaughn was surprised with a gift
from the HFPA, a video camera which prompted Theo’s
quick wit, “Once you come home you can start
documenting the most important film of your life
without Owen Wilson.”
Vaughn was joined by David O. Russell in presenting
grants to LA Conservancy and UC Berkeley

announced grants for scholarships for A.F.I.,
Cal Arts, Cal State L.A., Cal State Northridge, Cal
Carolina students. Liam Hemsworth and Amber
Heard accepted grants on behalf of the Coalition of
Asian Pacifics in Entertainment, Film Independent Inc..
and Independent Feature Project, in recognition of
their professional training and mentoring.
Vin Diesel, acknowledging a personal debt to the
Sundance Film Festival where his first film Strays
was initially accepted, announced a grant to the
Institute that enables filmmakers from foreign
countries to participate in the festival workshops.
Dermot Mulroney and Piper Perabo announced our
continued support of Outfest, while Julie Delpy
and Blair Underwood accepted on behalf of
FilmAid International. Jonah Hill acknowledged
cultural exchange through film by presenting
grants to American Cinematheque, International
Documentary Association, Latin American
Cinemateca of Los Angeles, and the Los Angeles
a special plug from Piper for The Young
youth to create stories which are later
brought to life by artists.
Liam Hemsworth
Alicia Witt
Marsha Hunt
Also in attendance and accepting
on behalf of a new charity, Film Noir
Foundation, were screen legends Tab
Hunter and Marsha Hunt.
Despite a few technical glitches
caused by a faulty teleprompter, it
was a star-studded fun-filled event,
and instead of goody bags for the
guests, a donation was made on their
behalf to No Kid Hungry.

FILM RESTORATION
a tradition
In recognition of the HFPA’s ongoing financial support for the restoration of classic films, the Los
Angeles County Museum of Arts is presenting a season of newly struck prints of films we have
funded. The four titles selected are 1933’s KING KONG, Francesco Rosi’s SALVATORE GIULIANO,
Alfred Hitchcock’s SHADOW OF A DOUBT and Robert Altman’s COME BACK TO THE FIVE AND DIME,
DEATH OF A SALESMAN
Last August, a special reception and screening at the Billy Wilder
theater in Westwood of Stanley Kramer’s film version of the Arthur
Miller play “Death of a Salesman” brought together a galaxy of
actors who had worked with Kramer, including Mickey Rooney,
Sydney Poitier, Theodore Bikel, George Chakiris, Richard
Erdman, Stan Freeberg, Marsha Hunt, Marvin Kaplan, Barbara
Luna, and Bill Mumy. Joining the producer’s widow Karen Sharpe
Kramer, who organized the event, were members of the
Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
A repeat screening and reception at the New York Film Festival
recognized our funding of a film that hasn’t been in circulation for
over fifty years.

THE ROUND TABLE SERIES
A NEW INITIATIVE
Julian Assange
One of the major innovations made by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association
this year has been the introduction of Round Table interviews, created to allow
members to broaden the scope of their coverage while giving a forum to notable people
and celebrities not necessarily involved with the entertainment industry.
So far, guests have come from the worlds of sports, politics, business and finance, and
although primarily conducted at the HFPA offices in West Hollywood, Round Table
interviews have also taken place in Toronto, New York and London.
Participants in the Round Table series during the year to chat with members and talk about
their lives and careers included Julian Assange, Niki Lauda, U2, Lech Walesa, Mike Tyson,
John Williams, Lynda Obst, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Paris Hilton and Anjelica Huston.
“It is an idea that has really taken off, and we have many more
guests--authors, business tycoons and athletes among others -- lined up for
the coming year,” said HFPA President Theo Kingma.
TINA FEY AMY POEHLER
They earned nothing but raves when they
hosted last year’s Golden Globes, and they
promise more of the same hosting tonight’s
show.
Not only are they colleagues, having
worked for years on Saturday Night Live,
but they also happen to be great friends.
Growing up were they always funny
Tina volunteers, “I was a sarcastic child, a
bit on the shy side.” So how did she develop
her special brand of comedy
“I think a lot of the stuff both Amy and I do
comes from having studied at Second City
in Chicago and Improv Olympic. We spent
a lot of time together, always working. It
really began in the ‘60s at the University
of Chicago where the idea of taking serious
issues, things that were happening in the
news, and turning them into comedy got its
start. So it has kind of been ingrained in me.
I start with something serious, and then find
the comedy in it.”
What about you, Amy Were you
always funny
“I have some memories in the womb. But I
guess when I would do plays, I’d take it very
seriously, and I’d get a lot of laughs.
I remember doing “The Wizard of Oz,” playing it
very serious, and people would find it funny.”
Was it ever a dream to become an actress
“Sure, doesn’t every child dream that” Tina
responds. “You see the person in Singing in the
Rain, and you want to be that person. But then
as I got older, I became aware that writing was
another option, and I started getting into that,
and when I found improvisation in Chicago, the
synthesis of the two determined what I was
meant to do.”
The two have such great chemistry
together. How did that happen
“We’ve known each other so long, we developed
this great shorthand, where we would pitch
jokes for each other. We’d sit there and say, ‘you
could say it like this’ or ‘what if you changed this
to this’ It was ego-less so not at all difficult.”
How much planning goes into
tonight’s show
Amy responds, “A month before we’ll be like oh,
shit, we haven’t done any work for the Golden
Globes. And then we’ll work really hard. Tina and I
are used to working backing up from a deadline; so we
do a little bit better when we’re under pressure.”

When the Hollywood Foreign Press Association decided to establish a special,
prestigious award for outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment,
the members wanted it to bear an internationally recognized and respected
name. So they turned to a born showman, Cecil B. DeMille, who accepted
the idea graciously, and the first Cecil B. DeMille award went to him in 1952,
the year his penultimate film, The Greatest Show on Earth, premiered.
The following year, 1953, at the Tenth Annual Golden Globe Awards gala,
Walt Disney received the DeMille award; the winning pictures were The
Greatest Show on Earth and With a Song in My Heart, while Gary
Cooper, Shirley Booth, Donald O’Connor and Susan Hayward took the top
acting awards (and Richard Burton was pronounced Most
Promising Newcomer).
The
AWARD
During the last ten years the members of your Association have endeared
themselves to us in Hollywood for two main reasons. You have made friends with
us and you have made friends for us. It’s difficult to say which of these two
things makes us happier. Perhaps the first, because of its personal contact, the
warmth of which I have felt every time I have met any of you. Congratulations
on your 10th Anniversary. I hope I shall be around to congratulate you on your 25th.
Sincerely,
Cecil B. DeMille
Such notables (including several future DeMille awardees) as Joan
Crawford, Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, Robert Mitchum, Jane
Russell, Stanley Kramer, Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Doris
Day, Samuel Fuller, Alan Ladd and others wrote warm
congratulatory letters to the Association on this
anniversary. Unfortunately, DeMille couldn’t make it.
The last Golden Globe Awards gala he attended was the 15th, in 1958.
The Cecil B. DeMille award winners are chosen by the HFPA Board of
Directors and presented each year (except for 1976). The first woman to
receive the award was Judy Garland in 1962 (following Fred Astaire,
something which delighted her to no end); the next was Joan Crawford in
1970. The list of winners provides a spectrum of talented human beings who
have had a definite impact on the world of entertainment, be it Alfred
Hitchcock, Lucille Ball, Sidney Poitier, Sophia Loren, Sean Connery, Barbra
Streisand or any one of those thoughtfully selected “for the honor.”

WOODY - HOW HE DOES IT
“When you get an idea for a movie, it’s always perfect and beautiful and
exciting and wonderful. Then you write it and it’s not easy, and then you
cast it and you find that Jack Nicholson isn’t available and you have to use
somebody else, and then you find you don’t have enough money, and
you have to do a scene another way. In your mind’s ear, it’s all beautiful
and fluid, but when you hear somebody else say the lines, it’s long and
tedious. By the time the film is done, it’s such a disappointment
compared to what you set out to make, it’s like a cook in the kitchen
who doesn’t want to eat the meal after its prepared. I always feel, if
only an audience could see what I had in mind. I’m so humiliated.”
“When I finished Manhattan, I tried to buy it back from the
company. I didn’t want them to put it out. I said to them, ‘I’ll do
a movie for you for nothing if you don’t put this out,’ and they
said ‘that’s crazy. We have a $4 million investment, we’re going
to put it out because we’re paying interest on our loan.’ And they
did, and it was very successful.”
“When an idea occurs to me, which they do now and then, I write
them on a slip of paper, and then throw them in a drawer. When
I’m about to start a new project, I open the drawer, take out
those pieces of paper and look at them. Sometimes there’s a few
good ideas there. Sometimes they’re not so good. After a while
they haven’t held up very well. At the time they seemed great
but weren’t. In which case, I go into my room day after day, week
after week if necessary, and just force myself to think. Very often
I just sweat it out, and that’s the worst part of writing.”
“The most pleasurable part of any movie for me is at the end when I get
to add the music, because I always make the film and then cut it, and
then when it is done I go into my room with all my records - I still have all
my long playing records - and I pick out the music and drop it in in spots,
and if something doesn’t work out, I take it out and try another one, and
that is always the most pleasurable moment for me.”
“Moviemaking is much less glamorous and much less controlled than
people think. When I finished Celebrity, I wanted to do a jazz story. I had an
idea for one, and then when that was finished I just was sitting in a room and
a funny story occurred to me about a bank robbery, and so I made that movie,
and now I’ve finished that I’m thinking of the next movie, and whatever idea
comes to me is what I’ll make. There is no real preconceived attitude toward
it. If a murder mystery occurs to me or a political picture or anything that is
funny, or another jazz movie, that’s what I start working on.”
“It is possible that unconsciously when I’m feeling low or down for
some reason, I try and do a funny movie because in some therapeutic
way for six or eight months I’m working in an atmosphere every day
that is funny and lively and full of jokes and full of good spirit. On
the other hand if I’m feeling in a very up and happy mood, I
might try and make a serious movie because the exhilaration and
the happiness that I’m feeling gives me the confidence to make a
movie in an area that I’m not as proficient in.”
“My perception of humor has always been the same. Even as
a little child and I don’t say this in any bragging way or to be
self-aggrandizing, I always had an appreciation of sophisticated
material. Even as a little child, I was never a fan of The Three Stooges.
I was never really crazy about Laurel and Hardy. You know, I never
liked that kind of humor. I was much more interested in either The
Marx Brothers or some of Ernst Lubitsch’s films, and to this day I feel
the same way. I generally appreciate sophisticated comedy the most
and don’t have a very big tolerance, personal tolerance, for broad
comedy. So my sense of humor hasn’t really changed at all. It is the
same. I still find Pygmalion by Bernard Shaw and Blithe Spirit by Noel
Coward the best of all English comedies. It is just my own personal
taste and, of course, the Lubitsch films Shop Around the Corner and
Trouble in Paradise, those sort of elegant movies. I’m not saying I can
do them, but as a fan, those are my favorites.”
“When I buy a ream of paper at the store, I feel like Picasso. He
would see a blank space and he had to fill it up. I feel I can’t wait to
fill them all up. I have many ideas and I write them, and usually I
can remember when I’m duplicating myself but sometimes I don’t.
Sometimes I make a mistake and will duplicate something I’ve done
before or some idea will be quite similar to something I’ve done in
the past, and then I pay the price.”
WOODY - WHY HE DOES IT
“I make movies for myself, to please myself. I get pleasure out of a
movie if I think I made a good movie even if the audience doesn’t.”
“People think that I get inundated with offers to act in movies but I
don’t and I never have, and so when someone offers me a job to act
in a movie, I’ve always taken it. When I was offered The Front, when
I was offered Scenes from a Mall, and now I was offered this part in
IN HIS OWN
WOODY
Picking Up the Pieces; it was only three weeks work. I was happy and
looking forward to doing it, and I did it. I have no idea what the
movie will be like when it comes out but it was fun to do.”
‘I’m one of the few filmmakers that has this great luck to be able to
make a film about any subject I like. Nobody says don’t do it. I could
cast all famous stars or no stars at all and nobody says, please put a
big star in it. So it is a great position to be in. I’ve often said this. The
only thing standing between me and greatness is me. There is no
excuse for me not to be the greatest filmmaker in the world because
I can do whatever I want, and the only reason that I’m not is because
I can’t.”
“There will always be a certain amount of people like in any
profession, whether it’s dentists or teachers or film directors, those
people will continue to make good movies, will continue to make
interesting movies, personal movies and meaningful movies and the
rest of cinema will be where it always has been. There’s always been
a mad race for earning money and commerciality, and that is what
most of the movie business is. It’s people who are trying to figure
out how to make money and anticipate trends. They try and cash in
on what made money last year and they basically make up most of
the cinema, but then there are those people that are sincere who
will continue to function so you’ll get I think the same percentage
of fine movies now and in the future as you got in the 20’s or 30’s or
40’s; so the situation only changes cosmetically but not at its core.”
“I would love to have a film or any of my films reach a wide public,
but I would never do anything to make that happen. I would never
sit home and think, ‘oh, do not do this idea because it will not reach
a big public or do this idea because everyone will like it.’ I make the
films that I want to make, and I hope that one day I will get lucky
and there will be a big audience. I’ve made almost 30 films, and I’ve
had some hits bigger than others but very few of those, but as long
as there is enough audience all over the world for it and nobody gets
hurt too much financially, then I’m able to function and it makes me
very happy.”
“Unfortunately when I read a review I lose all perspective. I’m willing
to accept anything anybody says about my movies. If you tell me it’s
great or terrible or boring, I can’t fight it. I have no objectivity. That’s
why I never see my movies again. They’re painful to look at. I would
redo every one of them since my first, Take the Money and Run, in
l968. Once the film is ready to be seen, I’m always braced for a
blow. And I’m always suspicious if complimented.”
