Young Tiger Shane Edwards 

cherishes the close knit 

environment at Punt Road. 

The 19-year-old says team 

spirit is strong despite 

Richmond’s recent horror run. 

The club finished bottom 

with only three wins and a 

draw in an embarrassing 2007. 

“This team is the tightest I 

have been involved with,” 

Shane said. 

“Last year we lost a lot of 

games but we all stuck together. 

“There are no little groups 

within the group.” 

Shane was a second round 

pick, and number 26 overall in 

the 2006 national draft. 

“It feels like I have been here 

so much longer,” he said. 

“The first to four year players 

went out every Tuesday for a 

meal at a different restaurant 

each week. 

“That adds up to a group of 

about 22 players from our list.” 

Shane, a former North 

Adelaide player who grew up 

at Golden Grove, rents a 

house with team mate Will 

Thursfield. The Melbourne 

lifestyle now agrees with him. 

“It was pretty tough to start 

with, putting up with all those 

Adelaide jokes which I didn’t 

like,” he laughed. 

Forging an AFL career in the 

east has allowed him to 

escape the intense media 

attention endured by 

teenagers drafted to the 

Crows and Power. 

He has done less than half a 

dozen interviews and never 

fronted the television cameras. 

“I would rather it that way,” 

he said. 

Shane must improve his 

kicking and decision making 

under pressure, after playing 

16 games in his debut season. 

He impressed on the wing 

and across half forward. 

“A lot of times last year I 

stuffed up the kick when I had 

time,” he said. 

“I want to get more of a run in 

the midfield and keep improving 

as a crumbing forward.” 

With added bulk and a full 

pre-season he feels more 

confident. 

“I have put on 9kg since 

arriving at the club,” he said. 

“It was pretty daunting at the 

start, walking in and feeling 

so small. 

“I was a featherweight.” 

Ball magnet Nathan Foley was 

an inspiration over summer. 

“I trained with him for a lot 

of the pre-season, doing extra 

work,” he said. 

“He’s always buzzing around 

doing more than he has to.” 

Shane singled out team 

mate Andrew Collins, a 

young midfielder who has 

struggled with groin 

problems, as a player to 

watch in 2008. 

“Andy has a big season 

ahead of him,” he said. 

“He’s been burning up the 

training track.” 

“ It was pretty tough to start 

with, putting up with all 

those Adelaide jokes which 

I didn’t like.”

PROFILE - ANDREW COLLINS 

COLLINS BEGINS ROAD TO RECOVERY

Andy Collins doesn’t view 

himself as a gallant white 

knight who can rid West 

Adelaide of its current malaise 

and return it to premiership 

grandeur in rapid time. 

Nor does the new Bloods 

mentor consider himself a 

masochist whose glutton for 

punishment has subconsciously 

led him to a side with a sad 

recent form line (three 

successive wooden spoons and 

55 losses from 63 matches). 

Rather, the 42-year-old sees 

himself as the sum of many 

parts whose objective is to turn 

the Bloods’ fortunes around, a 

goal he deems realistic. 

“The squad is very young at 

West Adelaide and I believe in 

the value of education,” Andy, 

a qualified PE teacher, said. 

“This team has a lot of 

improvement in it. The guys 

are already improving a lot 

quicker than I’d anticipated. 

“Already I’ve noticed 

improvement in their 

professionalism, physical 

preparation and ability to learn 

a new game style … it’s been far 

superior than I would ever have 

imagined them coming along.” 

The good news is that 

success and Andy Collins have 

been enduring companions. 

The first-year West coach 

collected three VFL/AFL 

premierships as a back pocket 

specialist for Hawthorn during 

the club’s halcyon era, the 

Hawks missing just one major 

round campaign during Andy’s 

212-game, 10-year career. 

Subsequently, Collins 

enjoyed success as a head 

coach at VFL level, guiding 

Sandringham, Box Hill and 

most recently Coburg to 

finals action, before signing 

with West last September for 

three years on a full-time 

basis, a role which differs 

from his three previous 

league gigs. 

“West Adelaide is a standalone 

club which appealed to 

me,” Collins explained of his 

decision to take up the Bloods 

post, which he considered the 

most alluring of the 20 or so 

coaching jobs going 

nationally at the time. 

“Being the head coach, being 

in charge of my own pregames 

and running my own 

coaching program present a 

really good challenge, because 

of the VFL alignments and the 

way they work I always had 

an AFL coach to answer to.” 

Having been based in 

Victoria his whole footballing 

life, Andy’s knowledge of the 

SANFL competition 

understandably is minimal. 

“I hadn’t seen a lot of SANFL 

footy and I am unfamiliar with 

most of the key figures of the 

SANFL clubs, so it will take 

me a little while to become 

accustomed to that,” he said. 

“Having said that, I do see it 

as an advantage. It means I’ll 

be focusing purely on our 

group and the club, and 

specifically what we can do.” 

Collins, who as far back as 

1997 was considered an AFL 

coach-in-waiting, is content with 

his lot in the coaching world. 

“I’ve been an assistant coach 

at three AFL clubs and I’m like 

another 300 current assistant 

coaches (touted as potential 

AFL head coaches),” he said. 

“There are only 16 (AFL) 

jobs and it’s taken me a while 

but I prefer being a head 

coach rather than an 

assistant. I didn’t even apply 

(for any advertised AFL 

assistant roles) – it’s not really 

an ambition at the moment. 

“I’ll be very happy to be at 

West Adelaide for the long 

term and if an AFL head 

coaching job does come up, 

I’d hope they’d have the 

courtesy of going through 

Paul Sperling first.”

made a brilliant start for 

his new club, picking up 

five votes in the race for 

the ‘be active’ Star Player of 

the Year & R.O Shearman 

Medal, after a superb 

performance against the 

Redlegs last Friday. 

The former Rooster booted 

six goals in a best-on-ground 

performance, which inspired 

Sturt to a 60 point win over 

their great rivals. 

Judged by members of 

the SANFL’s 200 Club on a 

5-4-3-2-1 basis for every 

minor round match, the 

award carries with it a $3000 

first prize. 

P.S. Three ‘Mystery Rounds’ 

have been allocated during 

the course of the year in 

which voting results will be 

kept secret until the end of 

the season. 

Glenelg’s Tom Holmes 

wins Round 1 nomination 

Tom Holmes from the 

Glenelg Football Club 

has been named the Round 

One Coca-Cola Star Search 

Award nominee. 

In just his fourth League 

appearance, 19 year old 

Holmes was a standout for the 

Tigers in their 14 point loss to 

South Adelaide at 

Hickinbotham Oval on Sunday. 

Playing on the wing, Holmes 

accumulated 20 possessions, 

including 12 kicks, eight 

handballs, six marks and 

three tackles and was named 

in the Tigers’ best. 

In a team that was down on 

form, Tom proved consistent 

throughout the match with his 

efficiency and general use of 

the ball a highlight of his game.

FANS FLOCK TO OPENING ROUND OF SANFL 

The SANFL was delighted with crowd figures for the four 

Round 1 matches last weekend. In excess of 17,700 fans 

turned out to welcome the 2008 season, which kicked off last 

Friday night with over 6,700 supporters attending the Norwood/ 

Sturt clash at Coopers Stadium. The total attendance figure of 

17,711 is the second highest Round 1 attendance since 1995. 

The League thanks all fans who attended games to support 

their club - the attendance figures are a tremendous result and 

auger well for what promises to be a fantastic year of SANFL 

League footy. 

COME AND GET IT CAMPAIGN

The SANFL “Come and Get It” television campaign aims to 

inspire fans by showing the journey of a premiership team 

towards the ultimate prize – the Thomas Seymour Hill Trophy. 

Directed by Chris Houghton of Spirit Films, the advertisement 

features a montage of past and present SANFL players sharing 

with audiences what stirs their passion for Australia’s national 

game. Building on the successful Neil Kerley commercials of 

2007, this latest instalment depicts vivid images from the game 

in all its exhilarating glory. 

The integrated campaign, which was launched last week 

through television, press and radio, will continue throughout the

For the past eight years David worked with AFL club Port Adelaide, 

firstly as Player Development Manager and more recently as 

Administration / Development Manager. He has had extensive 

experience both at Board and CEO level with the Port Adelaide Magpies 

following a 159 game playing career with the club and has been 

actively involved for many years in the recruitment and development of 

young players. As General Manager, Game Development, David is 

responsible for planning and managing the activities of the SANFL 

Game Development Department, working closely with the AFL. 

Rob Nelson joins the League with extensive sports 

management experience at executive level, including Olympic 

Games, Surf Life Saving, Australia Major Events, and most 

recently held the position of CEO of SA Rugby. Whilst in this 

position, Rob was a key driver in securing a round of the 

prestigious IRB Sevens World Series for Adelaide and increasing 

sponsorship and grassroots participation to record levels. 

In this newly created position, General Manager, Partnerships & 

Strategy, Rob will be responsible for: 

• Overseeing all marketing and communications activities of the SANFL 

• Facilitating the SANFL’s strategic planning process 

• Developing high level relationships with key corporate, media and 

public sector partners 

• Facilitating the development of a state-wide facilities and 

infrastructure program 

• The enhancement of key relationships with the SANFL clubs and 

the Adelaide and Port Adelaide Football Clubs
