Vincentia Vibe - The voice of our school Term 1 wk 10A 04/04/13
Dear Parent(s)/Caregiver(s)
Our year 7 and 9 cohorts have been doing their Naplan tests this week. The
students have been very settled and it would appear that they are taking the tests
seriously. Well done!
We Can Change! no matter how ingrained behaviour or habit may be “You
CAN teach an old dog new tricks!’
Neuroplasticity has added science to the age-old debate of nature or nurture. For
centuries we have debated whether our personalities are ‘pre-wired’ or are the
result of the environment and experiences we are exposed to. Neuroplasticity is the
science that explains how our brains develop. Research in the last 20 years
explains how new pathways are developed in our brain. This science rebukes the
belief that our potential is biologically fixed. Neuroplasticity dispels the belief that
once our brain reaches maturity, it is pointless trying to change it. You can choose
to make a new pathway leading to wise choices or eradicate a pathway that is
leading to poor choices.
Thank you to the vast majority of parents who have assisted in ensuring their child
is dressed in appropriate school uniform each day especially as the weather is
cooling down. The students have never looked so good. When all our students
dress in correct uniform, it sends a strong and positive message to our community
about the standards and values of Vincentia High, and demonstrates the pride that
the students have for their school. We do appreciate it can be difficult for parents
on some days to “encourage” their children to wear correct uniform and we thank
each parent for their assistance. A reminder parents that it is important that all
students wear appropriate, enclosed shoes. It is a requirement of Work Health
Safety and Work Cover NSW legislation that students must wear sturdy shoes in
areas such as science laboratories, craft rooms, workshops and food technology
laboratories.
A safety message – please help!
Deodorant sprays are a health hazard to some of our students and staff. Please
understand that some people suffer from Asthma and other related respiratory
conditions and spray deodorants can cause a serious risk to them. Please don’t
allow your children to bring these to school.
LOTE News
INDONESIAN NEWS
Indonesian students have been working hard during class time. Year 8 students are studying transport,
places and school life. Year 9 are learning about bargaining in the market place and ordering food in a
restaurant. Year 10 are studying Kesehatan - health and living a healthy lifestyle. Year 11 students are
working hard in their Preliminary year and have just completed units on personal identity and are now
focusing on work, education and future ambitions.
All Indonesian students were treated to a fantastic cultural performance conducted by the Australia Indonesia
Arts Alliance. Year 9, 10 and 11 elective students along with 8B1 were given the opportunity to participate in
a Balinese (Dance), Gamelan (Orchestra) or Pencak Silat (Martial Arts) workshop which culminated in a
performance of the Ramayana on stage for all Year 8 students. This is the first time that an Indonesian group
has performed at VHS and it was a powerful reminder of the differences between Australia and our closest
neighbour.
A timely reminder that payment of $5 per student was also required for this event and that there is
quite a large amount of money still outstanding. Please ensure that payment is made at the office
ASAP.
This term Ms Edwards will attend the Indonesian Teachers Conference in Sydney and present to other
teachers, from across NSW, her unit of work on the Orangutans, as well as representing Indonesian
language school Cinta Bahasa at the event. Year 9, 10 & 11 will visit Sydney later in the term to experience a
meal at an Indonesian restaurant. Year 11 will attend an HSC Languages Exam Preparation day at the
University of Wollongong on June 12th. The Indonesian Writing Competition will also be conducted this term
'Kompetisi Siswa' and students will be encouraged to submit entries from Years 8, 9 & 10.
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Mr Glen Keefe to the LOTE faculty. Mr Keefe is teaching
Indonesian to a number of Year 8 classes and has some fantastic and creative ideas in the classroom.
A reminder also that proficiency in language comes from immersion and practice. Please involve yourself
daily in asking your student about words and phrases that they know in Indonesian and encourage them to
use them at home.
Selamat belajar
Vincentia High School makes the Starlight
Room Westmead ‘Sparkle’
Vincentia High School’s Year 12 ‘Community & Family Studies’ class headed up to Westmead
Children’s Hospital on the Thursday, 9 th May 2013. The purpose of the day was to add
experiences through a ‘PIP’ tour run through the hospital which would benefit them for their HSC.
This excursion allowed the students to spend time in all departments throughout the hospital,
ranging from; out patients rooms, oncology, hearing and eye waiting rooms.
The girls spread their love by adding stickers to the children’s day room and sitting down with
them having a chat about their ‘journey’ in hospital.
Not only did this excursion benefit the girls it also added a touch of sparkle to the hospital. Our
teacher Mrs Mardi Morris did a huge community drive to gain donations for ‘craft’ supplies that
were donated to the hospitals ‘Starlight’ room, - this is a needle and doctor free zone where the
children go for craft and leisure activities. With less than a weeks notice, the Yr 12 class gathered
enough goodies for 5 hampers!!! We donated the Hampers to Captain Starlight and the children
who were present in the room at the time.
With much enthusiasm these hampers were opened on the spot and the craft goodies were used
while we were in the Starlight room. The Yr 12 girls mingled with the patients and their parents,
had a dance off with the Wii with the kids and created memories which will last a life time.
We would like to thank the patients, staff and parents of Westmead Hospital for their time and
friendly smiles on our excursion.
Mountain Bike Fundraiser
Some of the wonderful volunteers at
Bunning’s for the Mountain Bike fundraiser
Thank you to all the students, parents and staff who helped at our
Bunning’s BBQ recently. It was great to see so many helpers on what
turned out to be a very busy day. Over $830 was raised for our Mountain
Bike and Triathlon clubs.
We have been asked to host the BBQ at the Chocolate Foot Mountain
Bike event held in the Currambene State Forrest on Sunday, 26 th May.
This is a 7 hour endurance race attracting racers from all areas, a perfect
opportunity to raise more funds for our teams.
If any parent, student or staff have an hour or two spare on that day, once
again your assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Please see Mrs Cathy Boyce or Mr James Wright to leave your details
asap.
Thank you
