PRE-RACE CONSIDERATIONS
Security
The Memphis Police Department, along with other
local, state and federal law enforcement agencies
will conduct operations during all marathon weekend
events to provide an enhanced level of safety to
athletes, spectators, staff and volunteers. Please be
sure to follow all new safety procedures.
Gear Check
All checked gear must be in the clear bag provided
at the expo. No exceptions. An area to check gear and
other items will be located in the plaza of AutoZone Park
starting at 6:30 a.m. on race day. Use the pre-numbered
tab at the top of your race number and affix it to the item
with a plastic tie available at the bag check area. After the
race, you may claim your item at the same location.
The bag check area closes at 3:30 p.m.
Note: There is no gear check at FedExForum or
the St. Jude Heroes Lounge at The Peabody.
Affixing Your Race Number & Timing Tag
Please use four safety pins to affix the number to the
front of your shirt or jacket. Your number must be
visible at the start, finish and all points on the course
so you are not disqualified or asked to leave. Please
do not fold or cut your number. Pin only through the
four small holes.
Your B‐tag is attached to your race number (see page 23).
Please make certain that the number on your B‐tag
matches the number on your race number. If not, visit
the solutions desk at packet pickup.
IMPORTANT: Your B-tag is affixed to the back
of your bib. It is not to be removed for any reason.
If your B-tag is not worn properly throughout the
race, you will not receive an official time.
Parking
There are many surface lots and parking garages within
four to six blocks of the start and finish lines (see page 20).
Be sure to arrive early to ensure a parking space.
The average charge is generally $10. Plan to arrive early
to familiarize yourself with the area, find the bag check
area at AutoZone Park, and be in your appropriate
corral or start line at least 30 minutes before the race
starts.
Prohibited Items
Unregistered runners, unauthorized vehicles, bicycles,
skateboards, in-line or roller skates, baby joggers or
strollers, and all animals are strictly prohibited on the
course to ensure runner safety and comply with liability
insurance requirements. Any type of unauthorized
support or pacing will not be allowed including, but
not limited to, support from a vehicle (fluid bottles,
splits, etc.), as such support will be considered an
unfair advantage. Noncompliance will result in
immediate disqualification.
What about headphones Headphones and other
electronic listening devices are allowed but not
recommended to ensure your safety and the safety
of others around you on sometimes-crowded city
streets shared by vehicular traffic.
Runner Tracking
For the marathon, marathon relay and half marathon,
runner tracking is available for friends and family to
keep track of where their runner is on the course.
Runner tracking will provide updates at several splits
in addition to estimated finish times (See page 22
for details).
Mascots for Kids Marathon
& Family Fun Run
To create a fun and exciting atmosphere for our
families, we will have a variety of mascots at the
Kids Marathon & Family Fun Run. For parents of
children who do not like mascots, please be aware.
There are several mascots scheduled to appear.
Water and Restrooms
Water and restrooms are located in a parking lot parallel
to the start on Fourth Street (see page 21), off the main
lobby of FedExForum (Third Street entrance), and the
AutoZone Park concourse.
Corrals and Wave Start
Here’s how the wave start works: All participants are
asked to be in position at the start in the corral (listed in
the chart below) that best describes his/her projected
pace (average minutes per mile for marathon or half
marathon). In other words, if you believe you will run a
12‐minute/mile pace (in marathon or half marathon),
you should line up at the start in corral #12.
Corrals will be designated by signs at roped-off sections
of the street (see page 21).
When the horn sounds, the first corral (Elites in front)
will be released. The runners in corral #2 will slowly
walk to the start line, where they will be held in place
for about two minutes and then released. This process
will continue until the last corral is released.
The 5K will have a wave start with three corrals. We ask
that walkers enter the last corral.
Pace Teams
Based on targeted marathon finish times, these groups
will be led by volunteers coordinated by the Memphis
Runners Track Club (MRTC) who will keep each group
on the designated pace. Half marathoners are welcome
to join a group as well. Stop by the pace team booth at
the expo to learn more about pace groups.
Discarded Clothing
Clothing and other personal items discarded at
the start will be collected and donated. Items
collected anywhere on the course will be thrown
away as trash. The St. Jude Memphis Marathon
Weekend cannot be responsible for items left on
the course or at bag check.
ON THE COURSE
On-Course Support
Split time clocks will be at every mile, and kilometers are
marked every 5K. The course will be marked by cones,
mile/kilometer markers and directional personnel along
the road. The course (except in Overton Park) is defined
as being between the curb and the cones. Anyone
leaving the course — except to use the toilet or receive
medical attention — will be guilty of an unfair advantage
and immediately disqualified.
Traffic control will be directed by the Memphis Police
Department. Runners should be aware of vehicular
traffic, particularly at all intersections. While police
traffic control is planned at all major intersections and
numerous others along the course, it is impossible
to cover the entire course. PLEASE STAY ALERT!
Course monitors and directional personnel will also
be at appropriate locations.
Marathon
Marathon Relay
half marathon
The first aid station will be between mile marks 1 and 2.
Aid stations will then be approximately every mile from
mile marks 3 through 25 with water, PowerAde ® , Nuun ® ,
Vaseline ® , bandages and portable toilets available.
Portalets will also be located at mile marks 1 and 2.
Lemon-lime PowerAde and Nuun Tri-berry will
be served on course.
GU Energy Gel in a variety of flavors will be available
at aid stations near mile marks 9, 15, 18 and 21.
If you have not trained with PowerAde, Nuun or GU
Energy Gel or used them before, it is recommended
that you use them with caution.
Personal Fluids
There will be a table at the front end of each aid
station for runners’ personal fluids. A runner may
have his/her personal handler take his/her bottles
and place them on the table, but there must be no
verbal or physical exchange between the runner
and personal handler and/or other individuals.
St. Jude Memphis 5K
Aid stations will be near mile marks 1 and 2 with water,
PowerAde, Vaseline, bandages and portable toilets
GENERAL GENERAL INFORMATION cont’d
Medical Aid
We urge medical caution by all runners, particularly
first-timers. Do not go beyond your physical limit.
If you have medical conditions that you wish
to be known in case of emergency (such as illness,
special conditions, allergies, medications,
blood type, etc.), write them in waterproof ink
(Sharpie marker) on the special form found
on the reverse side of your race number.
Runners should notify aid station personnel of any
injured or ill runner requiring assistance. A runner
who appears to be suffering from a life-threatening
condition, such as heat stroke, may be examined by a
qualified race official to determine the seriousness of the
problem. No disqualification will result from such action,
even if the examination is hands-on, provided the
course covered by the runner has not been shortened
or substantially altered in the examination process. A
runner who, in the qualified race official’s opinion, is in
control of his/her faculties will be permitted to decide
whether to finish, while one who is not will be removed
from the race regardless of whether such action could
result in a possible loss of prize.
Marathon
Marathon Relay
half marathon
There will be first aid-stations on the course between
mile marks 9 and 10 and just past mile mark 20. Twelve
additional ambulances will be mobile on the course.
Emergency radio communications will be available at all
aid stations. Course directors supply trucks and pickup
vans also will have radio communications. The course
physician will be in the race director’s car.
A doctor-and nurse-staffed field hospital will be located
at the finish line in the basement level of AutoZone Park.
Three ambulances will be positioned near the stadium
as well.
Runners are advised to drink plenty of liquids during
the run. Drink in small quantities early and often,
especially if the weather is warm. Do not wait until you
are thirsty. If you are drinking both water and some
form of a fluid replacement drink, you should maintain
a sensible balance to ensure proper electrolyte balance.
Spirit Stations
These various groups will provide entertainment
along the marathon, half marathon and marathon
relay courses and cheer on the runners
Photo prints may be ordered from our website,
stjudemarathon.org in the “Shop-Photos” section.
Dropping Out
Runners unable to complete the race will be transported
back to AutoZone Park. Once transportation is
requested, it is important that runners not leave the
scene by any other means so that their safety and
whereabouts may be accounted for. RUNNERS WHO
DO NOT COMPLETE THE ENTIRE COURSE MUST NOT
CROSS THE FINISH LINE.
FINISH
Entering AutoZone Park
So that your finish time can be recorded, it is vital that
you cross the mats at the finish line (and that you are
wearing your B‐tag timing device). Do not cross the
finish line a second time. Do not permit family,
friends or relay team members to cross with you
as this will cause you to be disqualified.
Make certain that your race number is pinned on
your front and completely visible for race officials
and photographers. Race supervision, electronic
timing and scoring are under the direction of the
Memphis Runners Track Club. All of its decisions
are final.
After Crossing the Finish Line
After the finish line, you will be awarded your finisher’s
medal, and given a bottle of water and a heat sheet.
Medical assistance will also be available if needed.
You will then be directed to exit the field and access
the post-race runner food & beverage and bag check
areas. Please do not rendezvous with family and
friends at the top of the steps as this creates a
bottleneck for all participants.
of stjudemarathon.org for complete information. For
the marathon relay, all five winners of winning teams will
receive a trophy.
Do something even greater
than finishing a race.
Beer and Tea Garden (New for 2014)
The beer and tea garden will host McAlister’s Deli
Famous Sweet Tea Ț M Michelob Ultra and Wiseacre
beer. There is a two-beer maximum. To gain entry
for each participant. Scan the code to obtain your
personalized results (see back cover). Official results for
the open (overall) division in the marathon, marathon
relay and half marathon as well as the St. Jude
Memphis 5K will be based on the actual order of finish
(“gun time”). All other results, including award trophies
and plaques, will be based on B‐tag time. B‐tag time
is defined as the duration of time from the moment a
runner crosses the mats at the start until the moment
that runner crosses the mats at the finish.
Please check results to validate your time, especially
if you expect to be an award winner. After 2:00 p.m.
on race day, all uncontested results will be considered
final. Official results will also be sent to the local media,
national running publications, the USATF Road Running
Information Center and the Boston Marathon. Race
results are considered final and no changes will be
made after January 15, 2015.
3:00 p.m. on race day will be returned to the
St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend office. If not
claimed within five working days following the races,
items will be discarded or donated to charity. For the
marathon, marathon relay, and half marathon, this does
not include discarded clothing at the start line which will
be donated to charity.
Marathon Relay Details
Marathon Relay Details
This section highlights information that is unique to the marathon relay. It is not comprehensive of all event details,
so please read the general information section for all important race details.
Gear Check
All checked gear must be in the clear bag provided
at the expo. No exceptions. An area to check gear
and other items will be located in the plaza of AutoZone
Park starting at 6:30 a.m. on race day. Please
pre-identify the item with your race number before
it is checked to speed up the process. Use the
pre-numbered tab at the top of your race number
and affix it to the item with a plastic tie available
at the bag check area. After the race, you can claim
your item at the same location. The bag check area
closes at 3:30 p.m.
Relay participants are encouraged to take a gear
check bag to the relay exchange for the incoming relay
member. (The weather may be cold, so please pack the
appropriate clothing for after your leg of the race.) For
example: Relay member running leg #4 would bring a
gear check bag for the incoming relay member running
leg #3. Each relay exchange station (with the exception
of #1 due to the proximity to AutoZone Park finish line)
will have a tent for gear check. Use the prenumbered
tab at the top of your race number and affix it to the
item with a plastic tie available at the bag check area.
Participants running the last leg (relay member #5) will
need to use the bag check area located in the plaza of
AutoZone Park.
Timing Belt and Race Number
Each relay team will receive one race belt with a race
(bib) number attached. This bib will contain the timing
device for the entire team. This belt will be transferred
from one team member to the next at the relay
exchange stations. Please ensure that the FIRST runner
(relay member #1) has this belt on race day. Do not
remove the bib attached to this belt for any reason. In
addition, each team member will receive a race (bib)
number which will contain the exact same number. It
is VERY IMPORTANT that this number is worn to help
identify the relay members as they approach the relay
exchange point. Please use four safety pins to affix the
number to the front of your shirt or jacket.
Race Legs
Leg #1 – 5K (3.1 miles): Start at the marathon
start line
Leg #2 – 10K (6.2 miles): The relay exchange station
located at Third Street and Gayoso Avenue
Leg #3 – 6.1K (3.8 miles): The relay exchange
station located at Overton Park – Veterans
Plaza, just north of the Memphis College
of Art
Leg #4 – 10.55K (6.55 miles): Think of it as half
of a half marathon. The relay exchange
station located on Beale Street just east
of Fourth Street.
Leg #5 – 10.55K (6.55 miles): The final leg (and
also half of a half marathon). The relay
exchange station is located at East
Parkway near Monroe Avenue, and you’ll
finish in beautiful AutoZone Park.
Relay Shuttles
All shuttles to relay exchange stations #2 and #4 will
leave from (and return to) the northwest corner of
Second Street and Monroe Avenue (one block west,
toward the Mississippi River from AutoZone Park)
beginning at 7:30 a.m. All shuttles run the same route
and will be continuously looping this route. Please
follow the relay shuttle signs.
Remember, relay exchange stations #1 and #3 are
within walking distance of the start and AutoZone
Park (see page 16).
Relay Exchange Station #2: This shuttle stop is on
Madison Avenue at Tucker Street. Relay member #3
(3rd leg of the race) will walk five blocks north along
Tucker (changes to Morrie Moss Lane at Poplar Avenue)
to relay exchange point # 2 in Overton Park. Relay
member #2 (2nd leg of the race) will make his or her
way back to that bus stop at Madison and Tucker to
return downtown.
Relay Exchange Station #4: This shuttle stop is
located on the northwest corner of Edgewood Street
at Monroe Avenue which is one block west of the relay
exchange station on East Parkway. Relay member #4
(4th leg of the race) will make his or her way back to
that bus stop at Edgewood Street at Monroe Avenue
to return downtown.
IMPORTANT : We strongly discourage providing
your own transportation to relay exchange stations
#2 and #4. These locations are very difficult to
access on race day. The shuttles will ensure you
arrive and depart in a timely manner. Please be on
time to catch your shuttle to ensure you do not miss
your leg of the relay.
Relay Exchange Stations
Relay exchange stations #2, 3 and 4 will have water,
bag check and limited first aid supplies. Relay exchange
station #1 is at Gayoso Avenue, and Third Street, a
block from AutoZone Park (finish line). All exchange
stations are located 200–800 feet after ChronoTrack
timing stations (blue and orange mats similar to those
at the race start and finish). These timing stations are
used to provide individual splits for each of the team
members in addition to ‘Runner Tracking’ for all runners.
Relay participants will hand off the timing belt to the
next team member at each of the four relay exchange
stations. Relay exchange stations #1 and #2 will occur
on the right side of the course while exchange stations
#3 and #4 will occur on the left. The “Relay Exchange
Ahead” banners in addition to blue and orange timing
mats will indicate that the relay exchange station is
ahead a few hundred feet (except at the 10K station on
North Parkway). Make sure your race (bib) number is
visible so volunteers can announce your arrival and your
teammate can move into position for the exchange of
the belt. Be sure you move over to the appropriate
side of the street, and do not stop in front of other
runners for safety and courtesy reasons.
Relay exchange stations #1 and #2 will be very
congested so be aware of your team member’s
anticipated pace and planned corral start to be
ready for the exchange.
After Crossing the Finish Line
After crossing the finish line, you must report to the
marathon relay belt return table located just beyond
the finish line. Once the belt is returned, relay member
#5 will receive all five finisher medals for the entire relay
team. Failure to return the belt will result in a $30 fee
and forfeit all finisher medals for the team. Water and
heat sheets will be available immediately after finishing.
Medical assistance will also be available if needed.
