SANFL FOOTBALL BUDGET - ROUND 1 - LEAGUE FOOTY

Q&A - WITH MATTHEW DAWES
DAWES
DATE OF BIRTH: 30/12/79
POSITION: BACK POCKET
CLUB: NORWOOD
Q&A.MATTHEW
BY: TOM HICKS
Nickname (and its origins):
‘Dawesy’ pretty obvious from my surname.
As a boy I supported: Woodville.
My most memorable football moment is:
Winning the 1998 Reserves Grand Final and also making
my league debut for Norwood.
I’d rather forget the game when:
Last year we embarrassingly lost to Centrals by over 150 points
at Elizabeth, historically it was one of the club’s worst losses.
I’m praised for my: Competitiveness on the field.
I’m not so good at:
Overhead marking, being a smaller player.
My football style could be compared to:
Former Norwood player Jerry D’Antiochia.
The best young player at my club is:
Ryan Schoenmakers, he is young and has real potential for
the future.
The SANFL’s most exciting player is:
Ian Callinan because of his amazing goal scoring ability.
The best advice given:
Is to get the most out of yourself.
A nightmare room mate would be (and why):
Paul Puopolo because of his extreme vanity.
My long lost twin is: Ben Stiller.
My party trick is: Climbing things at inappropriate times.
When I’m at a nightclub you’ll find me:
Making an early exit out the backdoor.
Schnitzel or Carpaccio of Tuna Schnitzel.
My biggest fashion mistake was:
My entire wardrobe, I don’t own anything fashionable.
Something my team-mates may not know about me:
That I can actually afford a new car.
In my future I see:
Winning a premiership for Norwood this year.
Besides playing football my ambition in life has always
been to:
Retire from work early and spend more time on the boat.
Mathew Dawes
I play in the SANFL because:
It’s the highest level of football I have ever been selected to
play in.
2007 GRAND FINAL
2007 GRAND FINAL
North Adelaide entered its first Grand Final since 1991 full of
optimism, but it didn’t take long for Central District to
show its big-game experience.
The Bulldogs opened up a 17-point lead in the first quarter and
were in control after establishing a 28-point break at half time.
They extended their lead in the third term before powering
home with five goals to one in the fourth stanza to run out
65 point winners.
There was plenty of support for the
Bulldogs at AAMI Stadium.
Chris Ladhams and Chris Gowans
with eyes for the ball.
The Bulldogs rejoice after winning the Thomas Seymour Cup again.
SANFL FOOTBALL BUDGET - ROUND 1 - LEAGUE FOOTY

PROFILE - JOHN CAHILL
THE FOOTY’S BACK – AND SO IS JACK!
BY DON COOPER
Dateline 1955: Following in
the footsteps of his highly
decorated uncle, South
Adelaide legend Laurie Cahill,
a young John ‘Jack’ Cahill was
beginning to find his feet with
the Panthers’ junior colts.
As fate would have it though,
whilst John’s early talent was
nurtured in a navy blue
jumper, his playing prowess
ultimately took flight as a
Magpie, realising some 267
games for Port Adelaide and
29 appearances in the famous
Croweaters’ guernsey.
But those early days with the
Panthers have never been lost
to “Gentleman John”.
In late 2007, the opportunity
to repay the club and the likes
of Des Read, who cared for
the welfare of the emerging
teenage star, was too great
a temptation.
Cahill, who humbly admits to
his mentoring record taking
precedence over his
distinguished playing days,
said coaching gave him the
opportunity to give something
back to the game.
“Too often we take and we
take in this world, but it’s so
much more rewarding when
you get the chance to give
something back, and
coaching has given me that
opportunity,” said John.
But to the man who
genuinely wants to see the
Panthers regain a place at the
top, it’s not so much a case of
paying them back, but paying
them forward.
Widely regarded in the
football community as an
exemplary leader of the
highest calibre, John’s
coaching re-emergence has
presented him with an
undeniable challenge.
For Cahill, the challenge is to
mould a previously
disenchanted South Adelaide
League outfit into a selfconfident
and formidable
force through a season that
has all the makings of one of
the most competitive in recent
SANFL history.
Mindful of the enormity of
the task, but renown for never
leaving anything to chance,
John openly declares his
fledgling tenure at
Hickinbotham Oval has been
commensurately intensive.
“Without any doubt, this is as
hard as I have worked at any
football club in my time as a
coach, including my stints
with Collingwood and Port
Adelaide.
“Some might say I’m an idiot
at times for doing it (coming
out of retirement), but it’s not
a personal thing.
I love what I do and if the
club can benefit I’m happy,
and I really believe we can
turn things around here at
South Adelaide, providing we
have the right attitude and a
strong commitment to being
our best.”
And whilst the acid tests are
only just beginning, John is
enthused by the players’
efforts to date in absorbing
and reflecting his unyielding
key philosophies for success.
“We’ve had a massive turn
around with our playing list
this season, but have only
recruited one interstate player
to the club.
“So this gives us an
enormous opportunity for our
youth and local players within
the zone to develop into
League footballers, and that’s
what will lead to long term
success for South Adelaide.
“After last season’s effort I
think there has been a self
realisation amongst the
playing group about what’s
required to be successful, and
that newfound attitude and
commitment is exactly what I
want to see as a coach.
“There are no shortcuts to
being successful, just hard
work which will give them the
confidence and self belief to
know they can do the job.
“They’ve already seen how
contentment can effect
performance and understand
the importance of physical
preparation and mental
rehearsal in relation to
winning games of football.
“If we get it right on the track
we’ve got every chance of
getting it right when it counts.
“And whilst time will tell how
long the process is, I believe
once they’ve got it right on
game day, they should never
look back.”
SANFL FOOTBALL BUDGET - ROUND 1 - LEAGUE FOOTY

IN THE BIG TIME
Fledgling Eagle Brad Ebert
is thankful he had the
chance to play in the SANFL.
The classy midfielder can
now fully appreciate the
competition gave him the best
possible grounding for a
career at the elite level.
His brief exposure to the
WAFL has highlighted a drop
in class.
“The competition here is a
little bit slower,” he said.
“Players back home seem to
have better skills as well.
“The SANFL is harder in
terms of physicality.”
Brad is aligned to Peel
Thunder, a lowly club
coached by dual West Coast
premiership player Chris
Waterman.
He only met his team mates
just over an hour before last
weekend’s season opener.
“I walked in there and
started introducing myself,
and trying to remember
names before basically
running straight out onto the
field,” he said.
“I played okay, kicked a goal
and had more than 20
possessions.”
The Port Magpies product
was considered South
Australia’s finest talent in last
year’s national draft. He
headed across the Nullarbor
when selected by the West
Coast Eagles at pick 13.
The transition has been
made easier thanks to his
host family.
Former West Perth player
Terry Taylor and his wife Jo
live in the affluent suburb of
Jolimont, only a couple of
minutes away from the Eagles’
training base Subiaco Oval.
“Everything has been sweet
so far,” Brad said.
Like most draftees, he has
had his share of surreal
experiences, including dinner
at senior coach John
Worsfold’s house.
IN THE BIG TIME
BY IAN SHUTTLEWORTH
“All the first year boys were
there,” he said.
“We walked in and there we
were having tea with John
Worsfold, a guy who we had
seen so many times before
on television.
“It was pretty cool actually.”
Most importantly, the coach is
pleased with his progression.
“At the moment he’s
impressed with what I have
done,” he said.
“Around the club John’s
really approachable.”
Brad, who turns 18 next
month, is forging close
friendships with fellow first
year Eagle Scott Selwood,
along with rookie listed players
Will Sullivan and Ryan Davis.
“Matt Priddis has been
awesome and he’s a guy I
look up to,” he said.
“Beau Waters and Tyson
Brad Ebert
Stenglein live together and
they’ve had me around a few
times as well.”
Brad is the son of former
Port Magpies and West
Adelaide player Craig Ebert,
and nephew of four-time
Magarey Medallist Russell.
He is excited at the prospect
of playing against cousin and
Power forward Brett.
“Hopefully I get the chance
to do it,” he said.
“I speak to him a fair bit,
maybe once a month or so.”
Brad is hopeful of breaking
into the senior side this year.
SANFL Talent Manager Brenton
Phillips wouldn’t be surprised
if he made an impact.
“Brad is young in terms of
age but mature in terms of his
body,” he said.
“He just doesn’t panic on the
field either.”
SANFL FOOTBALL BUDGET - ROUND 1 - LEAGUE FOOTY

SANFL NEWS
SANFL NEWS
BY LUCY JOHNSON - SANFL SPONSORSHIP & PUBLICATIONS MANAGER
SANFL…..COME AND GET IT
On Wednesday the League launched the 2008 SANFL Season
at the Distinctive Homes Dome.
Executive Commissioner, Leigh Whicker, officially welcomed
guests to the 2008 season, for what looks like being another
great year for football in South Australia. Mr Whicker explained
that “as we join with the AFL and every state and territory in
celebrating 150 years of football in this country, we will
complement our own season with a number of initiatives
supported by the AFL.” Highlights of the 2008 season include:
• Anzac Day West End Battle (Friday April 25)
• SANFL Rivalry Round (May 9-11). Coinciding with the AFL’s
Community Football Weekend, no AFL football has been
programmed this weekend to encourage all league to get their
supporters back to community footy and attend matches in the
city and country
• State Game vs Victoria at Adelaide Oval (Saturday May 31)
• District Footy Round (June 7 & 9)
• NAB AFL 150 Roadshow (July 9-27) to visit Whyalla, Mt Gambier,
Port Augusta, Port Pirie, Gawler, Victor Harbor and Adelaide.
• Starlight Foundation Charity Round (Saturday July 19)
• Kick a Footy Day (Thursday August 7)
• Magarey Medal (Thursday September 18)
• Grand Final (Sunday October 5)
In launching the 2008 marketing campaign, Mr Whicker
revealed that “this season, our players join the face of the 2007
campaign, Neil Kerley, in delivering the League Footy message
to “Come and get it”. As key features in the marketing of the
competition, the players’ passion for SANFL football is
highlighted in their description of key characteristics of the
premier state league competition in the nation.
Following formalities, the SANFL League Club coaches,
captains and mascots took on members of the media in a
commando boot camp style activity illustrating the fitness,
dedication and discipline required to play football at the highest
level…it was clearly evident that some have what it takes, whilst
others may need a little more training!
SANFL FOOTBALL BUDGET - ROUND 1 - LEAGUE FOOTY

FRESH FACES: ADAM SWITALA
THE DOG FATHER - SWOOP DADDY
LIVING THE DREAM
BY STEVE BARRETT
During the third week of
June last year, Central
District wingman Adam
Switala was on cloud nine.
On June 19, Adam and his
wife, Harlequin netballer
Tammy, became proud parents
for the first time with the birth
of son Louis.
Four days later, with Tammy
and 3.7kg Louis watching
from the grandstand, Adam
played his 150th league game
– making him the 32nd player
to attain that mark as a
Bulldog – in Central’s
Saturday night “Rivalry
Round” blockbuster against
reigning premier Woodville-
West Torrens.
Switala celebrated the
milestone match and capped
off a magical week by booting
the first goal in the opening
minute, which set the tone for
a 51-point triumph, the
remarkable chain of events
culminating in “Swooper” being
chaired off Hamra Homes Oval
by his team mates.
“It was an amazing time,”
Adam said.
“We had Louis during that
week and he got to come and
watch my 150th.
“He was only five days old
and he’d been out of hospital
for two days.”
Adam, who made his SANFL
debut in 1997, joined a
swelling fathers’ club at
Elizabeth, which now
includes coach Roy Laird,
co-captain Matthew Slade,
Daniel Schell, Ian Callinan
and returnees Luke McCabe
and Cameron Faulkner.
“It does change your life a
fair bit,” Switala said.
“My wife must take most of
the credit. She’s had to make
lots of sacrifices and she’s the
one who has to look after
Louis most of the time.
“I wouldn’t change it for the
world – it’s a great feeling
having someone who relies on
you for everything.”
Well almost.
“Everything except
breastfeeding that is,”
Adam quipped.
“I change nappies, although
the first time I changed him I
was dry reaching – it was
pretty bad.”
The 2000/01 Essendon
rookie-listed player went on to
play every game last year,
concluding his dream season
by playing his part in Central’s
65-point grand final
demolition of North Adelaide.
That win and the entire 2007
campaign sit atop the
catalogue of career highlights
for Switala, who is in his 12th
year of senior footy.
“The time has flown,” said
Adam, whose on-field
exploits turned around the
footballing allegiances of the
Switala family, who had all
previously been long-time
West Adelaide diehards.
“When you’re younger you
don’t really think about it, but
then 10-12 years later, all of a
sudden it’s like what happened
“I can hardly remember the
years at Essendon anymore,
it’s all just gone so fast.”
Dual-premiership winner
Adam, who believes he still
has at least “a couple of
years” left as a player,
juggles his football and
Adam Switala
family commitments with his
job at Rick Macgowan
Agencies, where he has
worked since 2003.
His boss is former Central
team mate Rick Macgowan,
now plying his trade as an
opposition coach at Sturt, a
situation Adam has no
problems with.
“I’ve known Rick for so long
that I don’t even think about
it,” he said.
“It’s handy in a way because
he knows all about the
commitments you have to
make when it comes to football.
“When I leave for training, he
leaves for training anyway. I get
a bit out of it and he gets a bit
out of it, so it’s a good situation.”
