Here we grow again !
Opening in mid November, our new
branch in Tonbridge represents an
entirely new concept for Parkers.
For the first time, we will have
‘High Street’ presence when we
open a Kitchen, Bathroom and
Joinery showroom and studio.
The 3000 sq ft. showroom features a number
of kitchen and bathroom displays. In addition
we have installed state-of-the-art
computerised design facilities on site, with
large screen display graphics and staffed by
three ‘in house’ designers.
Managing the operation is Matt Hollamby
(below, left), supported by our inspirational
designers, Amy Lee (centre), and Stephanie
Goodfellow (right). who will all be delighted
to assist with your requirements.

Having now had six months of our ‘voted-for’ coalition
government (does anyone remember the children’s television
puppets Pinky and Perky) and nothing but bad news - we all
now know that whatever there was it definitely won’t be
there from now on. And that apparently we all owe billions
of pounds but nobody seems to know to whom, and their
current word of the day is ‘LESS’.

Balance is always a good thing and along with Nick, Dave,
Pinky and Perky we thought we would add to the cast a
‘Good News Team’ (aka the Chilean miners) and a man
with whom the words charm, grace, style, charisma and
modesty are not necessarily instantly associated. A man
who single-handedly was going to win the World Cup
for Ing-ger-land. Yes we’ve added the delightful
Wazza to the team if for no other reason than
his word of the day is definitely MORE!
And the cast of millions Well, none other

we want. We vote to keep Anne Widdecombe
in the Dancing() competition and a

Parkers score a big success at major London home show
IN GREAT COMPANY AT THE HOME IMPROVEMENT SHOW
The first weekend of October proved to be successful all round. Not only did Europe triumph in the Ryder Cup,
but Parker Building Supplies made a big impact at the Earls Court National Home Improvement Show.
This major national show focuses on innovative but practical ideas on home improvement, extensions and decoration,
with the intention of saving or making space and adding real value to your home.
The event catered for a wide cross section of visitors. Those with home improvement problems to solve were able to call
on one-to-one advice in the ‘Ask the Experts’ area and the ‘Tricks of the Trade Zone’. You could even learn how to sympathetically restore a
period property in the ‘Renovation Pavilion’. And there were a number of special guests on hand in the shape of TV experts such as the BBC’s
Julia Kendell, Channel 5’s Charlie Luxton and Michael Holmes, and Channel 4’s Matt James.
Parkers were joined by over 300 specialist companies featuring the latest ideas on energy efficient heating, insulation, lighting, flooring,
windows, doors and the ‘Fifth Room’ (better known as your garden!).

The product range includes soakaway boxes
(which when correctly wrapped and protected
can be used for attenuation) ; GS plates , Pro
plates and Firmagravel, all of which can be used
as ground stabilization on areas used for car
parking, wheel chair access, show grounds and
areas in situations where customers prefer not
to use hard finishes such as concrete or paving.
The Jobibox is a strong water-permeable box
with a large storage capacity in which the
rainwater is stored temporarily and from which
it may gradually be drained into the soil. The
product is environmentally friendly as it causes
less waterlogging during heavy rains.
If you are you looking for a path that is suitable
for walking or riding on, Firmagravel is the
answer! Without Firmagravel:, the gravel will
rut, spread, move and roll away from the
pathway.
Wheelchairs, cycles and footprints will sink
into the gravel and the path will soon become
a mess and require more maintenance.
Firmagravel gives you a stable base which is
quick and easy to lay and which will allow
smooth travel over the gravel and still look
good. It can be cut to fit shapes and still retain
its strength so can be fitted around trees,
bushes and fences etc.
A full range of synthetic grasses are available in
2m or 4m rolls x 25m wide. Four qualities are
held in stock some of which have FIFA Approval
and can be used on play grounds, sports fields ,
roundabouts and areas where low maintenance
is an attraction.
A Joosten drainage mat is also available which
can be used for drainage beneath the grasses
or as a fall protection mat under grass or other
finishes on playgrounds. Joosten also offer a
range of geotextile wrapped slotted plastic
drainage pipeworking coils from stock.

Parker Building Supplies have again shown that we take our
place in the communities around our branches very seriously,
even though the event in question is far removed from being a
serious occasion!
The Ninfield Festival, which starts on the middle Friday in
July and runs through until late on the Saturday, has been big
news in the local area for a number of years, but like most
public events in these tough times, budget restrictions left the
organisers with real fears of cancellation.
But, thanks to Parkers and other local businesses, the townsfolk
were able to ensure that the weekend went ahead and was a
great success once more.
This year’s event started in traditional style, on Friday 16th
with a family quiz night and live music, run by the Ninfield
Bonfire Society.
Then on the Saturday, the Ninfield Carnival Procession left
Lower Street at midday with all the colour, fizz and noise of
floats and bands, dancers and entertainers.
During the afternoon, events in the main arena included the
Ninfield Dance Club, Gymnastics, a fun dog show, terrier racing
and the strong team challenge. And in the evening the live
band, the 1066 Rockit Men (pictured above), took to the stage
as people rounded off the night with more barbecue food and
drinks from the bar.
Carnival Committee member Samantha Guard commented: “It
was a fantastic weekend as usual, and we are glad that the weather
stayed fine and warm. With all profits going to the Alzheimer’s
Society, Research and Trust, we were thrilled to have Parker
Building Supplies supporting us. Thank you very much indeed.”

Parkers at the Haywards Heath Town Day 2010
local mp attends parkers’ eco zone
In September, the Parkers-sponsored Eco Zone, one of the
key elements at the Haywards Heath Town Day, proved to
be a great success with the public at large... and the town’s
larger than life MP.
This annual event in Victoria Park, supported by Mid Sussex
District Council and the Haywards Heath and District
Business Association, is a showcase for local businesses and
tradesmen, but this is the first time that it has focussed on
the growing interest in sustainable products.
In addition to featuring a range of our builders merchant,
timber, plumbing, joinery, kitchen and bathroom products
and services, we saw this as a great opportunity to highlight
Green@Parkers ever-expanding range of green building
products. It also provided a good way for us to make public
our association with Ecotecture Ltd, the locally-based
environmentally conscious architects with whom we are
working on various joint ventures.
The Green@Parkers Eco Zone comprised of forty or more
other stalls, staffed by local companies, community groups
and organisations working throughout the District. Also on
hand were various specialists who provided expert advice
plus demonstrations on sustainable products, reflecting
the need for change not just in construction methods and
practices but in not just our everyday lives.
The Zone was opened by local MP Nicholas Soames who
showed a keen interest in our products, but chose not to
take up the opportunity of trying out the electric bikes and
other low carbon vehicles.

the Eco Zone, saying: “It is

colourful career.

Parkers support Uckfield School greenhouse project
STUDENTS EXPERIENCE
THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT
Following on from last month’s news article, we are happy to report
that the students at Uckfield Community Technology College lived
up to their promise by recycling thousands of plastic bottles and
turning them into two greenhouses.
Each greenhouse is made from about 1500
empty two litre bottles, individually washed
with labels removed, cut and threaded onto
canes to make the walls and roof.
The students in year 8 and staff from the
Maths team at UCTC had been working in
teams during the college enrichment week
on the project. The 3000 bottles needed
were collected by students and other
benefactors such as the Wealden Waste
management team and the recycling officer
at Lewes District Council.
Parker Building Supplies were very happy
to be involved in the exercise and not only
donated a large number of plastic bottles
but also a number of stock items such as timber and tools which were used in the construction of
the walls and framework.
Helen Hindle – maths teacher running the project said the idea came from Greenspace Education
project, following a recent environment day where students had calculated the number of bottles
needed to build a classroom.
One of the completed greenhouses has been given to the
horticulture area, and one was donated as a prize to Buxted
Primary, the school who collected the most bottles.
Parker Building Supplies were once again happy to be involved in
helping a local school to achieve part of it’s aim to accomplish
recycling targets.

PARKERS CRICKET LEAGUE
CROWNS NEW CHAMPIONS
After a long season of hard work and toil it came down to the
final game of the season before Crowhurst Park could finally be
crowned champions of the Parker Building Supplies East Sussex
League.
Crowhurst Park put in a very convincing performance to defeat
already relegated Battle by 98 runs. The match may have had an
inevitable outcome but it certainly had the crowd gripped until the
final conclusion.
The men of the match was awarded to the entire team for their
amazing efforts this season, with special mention to youngsters
E Smissen and B Payne who between had taken 40 wickets and
scored over 300 runs in their first season in the First X1 and have
become an integral part of the team’s success this season.

TUG-OF-WAR CLUB
Parker Building Supplies are keen supporters of local sports clubs, but,
generally speaking, we have got involved with traditional sports such as
football, hockey and netball. That situation all changed when we were
approached by Bob Keeley of the Oxney Vines Cross Tug-of-War Club.
The club is based at Horam, near our
Hailsham branch, and is one of only
two teams based in Sussex. Bob has
been a trainer with the team for
nearly seven years, during which time
they have enjoyed a run of amazing
success and even represented
England in the UK Championships.

FOR LITTLE SCALLIWAGS
Some weeks ago Parker Building Supplies were contacted by Scalliwags, a
charitable organisation which runs a highly regarded local pre-school, in the hope
of us supplying a range of materials for its garden renovation project.
Ever keen to establish our links with the local community, and in particular educational
establishments, Tonbridge branch manager Martin Ballantyne responded positively to
Scalliwags’ Committee Secretary Alison Cummins plea for donations of materials for the
school garden which forms a part of the outdoor play area.
Scalliwags operates from one room in a single storey building with a maximum of 26
children attending the pre-school at any time. The not-for-profit charity group runs a very
tight budget yet manages to provide an essential service for both early years development
and essential childcare for hard working families.
The school were granted permission by the local council to extend the garden which
enables the children to play in and experience the natural elements. All the children share
access to the strikingly designed secure outdoor area pictured below and we feel certain
they will benefit greatly from the contributions made by Parkers.

Ashburnham Ride and Walk
Parker Building Supplies were delighted to sponsor the recent Ashburnham Ride and Walk,
an event combining the efforts of keen horse riders and walkers to raise money for Ashburnham
Village and this year’s chosen charity, St Michael’s Hospice.
The event covers an area of approximately 10 miles, and, despite the fact that the August weather let the
side down and the rain refused to go away and come again another day, the 130 riders and walkers were
able to enjoy the scenic views of Penhurst and the Vale of Ashburnham.
The route predominantly traverses private land not normally open to the public, and includes a section over
tent Hill where William the Conqueror’s army is reputed to have camped prior to the battle of 1066.
For the slightly less enthusiastic entrants there is a shorter 7 mile option which enables them to reach the
half way point and the finish line slightly sooner where the refreshment tent awaited.
The event raised over £2,400 in support of
the village and the tremendous work
that is done by St Michael’s Hospice.
