Mission 

Preston High School, located in the Throgs Neck section of the Bronx, New York, is 

an all-girls Catholic college preparatory high school founded for young women by 

the Sisters of the Divine Compassion. 

The mission of PHS is to empower young women as they discover their own 

potential and value through a broad and challenging education, active participation 

in community and a commitment to Christian service, so that they may become 

compassionate leaders for a change in the world. 

Vision 

Our vision is to change the world around us through compassion. 

History 

Preston High School was founded in 1947 and was originally housed in the 

Ash-Havemeyer-Huntington mansion. The facilities were expanded in 1960 to 

accommodate its growing population and diversified offerings, and improvements 

and additions are continually made to insure that PHS offers an innovative learning 

environment. Nestled on the banks of the East River between the Whitestone 

Bridge and the Throgs Neck Bridge in the Bronx, New York, the original structure 

anchors the school grounds and provides a beautiful reminder of PHS’s history.

Message from the Principal 

It is a pleasure to present you with 

Preston High School’s Fiscal Year 2009 

– 2010 Annual Report. This publication is 

an opportunity to recognize members of 

PHS community who donate their gifts 

of time, talent, and dollars, to the school 

each year. It is with the generous support 

of our Partners in Mission that our 

mission to empower young women is 

advanced. 

The ongoing development of our students in their 

intellectual, emotional, and spiritual growth is a testament 

not only to their effort and determination, but also to the 

dedication of their families and teachers. We’re proud that 

our girls continue to gain acceptance to prestigious colleges 

and to earn significant scholarship awards. They continue 

to impress us with their breadth of interests as evidenced 

by the many diverse after-school activities in which they 

participate. And once again we are deeply touched by 

the many different ways they demonstrate their deep 

compassion through service to others. 

Thanks to the generous support of our benefactors, we 

continue to strengthen our academic program the better 

to prepare our students for the challenges of college and 

career in the 21st century. We have invested in significant 

improvements to our aging physical plant, culminating in 

the creation of a suite of modernized and technologically 

advanced science labs, work on which should be completed 

this summer. Again, thanks to our benefactors we have 

increased the amount of financial aid we are able to offer 

our families adversely affected by the prolonged economic 

downturn. 

We remain committed to providing an education rooted 

in Catholic values that provide a strong moral compass in 

this ever-changing world. We’re excited by the positive 

changes that your support has enabled and by the 

passionate enthusiasm with which PHS students face their 

future. We remain determined to meet the challenges of our 

current economic climate with creativity and resolve. And 

we’re very thankful that you are willing to work with us in 

partnership for the benefit of the PHS community.

the Board of Trustees 

In presenting the Fiscal Year 2009 – 

2010 Annual Report of Preston High 

School, I want to first thank our alumnae, 

friends, families and benefactors for 

their faithful support. As a result of 

the continued support from the PHS 

community, I am happy to report 

that PHS remains a financially and 

academically strong institution with a 

bright future. 

Looking back on PHS’s accomplishments during the 

past year, I am struck by the fact that they exemplify the 

commitment to our mission to empower young women 

through a broad and challenging education, active 

participation in community and a commitment to Christian 

service. PHS students continue to achieve numerous 

academic and community service accomplishments and go 

on to attend some of the most prestigious colleges in the 

country; our recruitment efforts draw hundreds of hopeful 

students to apply to PHS; and we look forward to the 

science laboratory renovation during the summer of 2011. 

The Board of Trustees was proud to welcome three new 

members this year. They include: Elizabeth Anne Asaro ’68, 

Chairperson of the Social Studies Department at Alexander 

Hamilton High School; Andrea Donkor, ESQ, ’99, General 

Council Office, Compliance & Ethics, Manager, American 

Express; and Mary Hussey Piscina ’80, Community 

Outreach Volunteer and former Special Education Teacher. 

As we look forward to the future stewardship of PHS 

you should know that it will be focused on meeting the 

challenges of our struggling economy with flexibility and 

creativity. As our families make sacrifices to pay tuition we 

thank you for your generous support and your contributions 

to future appeals.

which PHS would not be able to be such a valued leader in

2009-2010 at a Glance 

PHS Community Mourns Loss of Dr. Morton 

The Preston High School community is deeply 

saddened by the passing of our esteemed 

colleague and beloved friend, Peg F. Morton, D. 

Min., who passed away suddenly at her home 

on July 31, 2010. More than 1,000 visitors came 

to pay their respects at her wake. 

Dr. Morton taught Religion at PHS for more 

than two decades. The response to her passing 

by the PHS community, as well as that of the 

Bronx community and beyond, was a testament 

to her life. Dr. Morton opened the minds of 

thousands of students, offered inspirational 

theological reflections, led the community in 

song and was a true supporter of the mission of 

compassion. 

The Preston Scholars Program

The Preston Scholars Program, or 

PSP, was introduced in the 2009-2010 

academic year and now includes 26 

sophomores and juniors. The program 

was designed to enable and encourage 

highly motivated students to take 

advantage of the several Advanced 

Placement courses offered and to 

complete challenging, self-designed 

Christian Service projects. 

On September 18, 2010 the United 

Nations Department of Public Information 

held the twelfth student observance of 

the International Day of Peace under 

the theme “Disarm Now for a Better 

World.” More than 1,000 students and 

teachers traveled to United Nations Headquarters, where they were addressed by 

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and General Assembly President 

Ali Abdussalam Treki. PHS joined in this day of peace as 13 young women, all 

sophomores and participants in the Preston Scholars Program, made the trip into 

Manhattan with their program director and PHS History teacher, Jennifer Connolly. 

Relaunch of PHS Website 

In the spring of 2010 there was an 

extensive redesign of the PHS website. 

Jane Grendell, Principal, spearheaded the 

project and noted the improvements to the 

online site have many benefits. 

Now visitors to the PHS website (www. 

prestonhs.org) will find welcoming visuals 

and updated content about alumnae 

activities, student life, academics, and 

admissions. In addition, online visitors are 

able to access a calendar of school wide 

events, link to teacher websites, make 

a secure gift online, and join our PHS 

Facebook community.

Academic Panthers 

Preston High School is committed to the liberal education of young women. Its 

program of studies is provided within a nurturing environment where every student 

is respected for her individual dignity and encouraged to pursue her growth as 

woman and scholar. PHS strives to create an environment that nourishes valueoriented 

learning in order to promote community, service and active citizenship. At 

PHS, students learn not only through their coursework, but also through various 

activities and projects, that they have an obligation to reach out to others in need. 

Our rigorous college preparatory program includes: 

• Regents, Honors and Advanced Placement classes 

• English, Fine & Technical Arts, 

Mathematics, Science, Computer 

Technology, Languages Other Than 

English (LOTE) and History 

• Some upper-level classes offer college 

credit through Pace University or St. 

John University’s College Advantage 

program. 

Students in Web Design class 

• Our highly regarded Computer Program 

offers required and elective courses that 

range from introductory to advanced levels and includes web design, graphic 

design, programming, and even computer-assisted musical composition. 

• We offer an accelerated math program for students who have excelled in 

Algebra during 8th grade. 

• Admission to the Preston Scholars Program is available to highly qualified 

sophomores and juniors. 

• Seniors are required to complete a year-long, mentored interdisciplinary 

Independent Study Project in order to graduate. 

Athletic Panthers 

At PHS, our students have high expectations for 

themselves in and out of the classroom. These 

high expectations of personal performance, 

dedication to self and school are very apparent in 

out athletic program. We have many sports teams 

and clubs available to our students including the

School Traditions 

IBM Women in Science & 

Engineering Day 

PHS continues to be grateful to 

IBM for their annual “Women in 

Science and Engineering Day” for 

freshmen. This year they presented 

a workshop on “The Sweet Science 

of Chocolate & Rain Forest Walkway,” 

followed by a presentation that gave 

students a sense of the vast array of 

career opportunities available in the 

Sciences, Technology, Engineering 

and Mathematics (STEM). The Day 

concludes with an informal “meet and 

greet” in the school library to which 

students from Grades 9-12 with a 

strong interest in pursuing STEMrelated 

careers are invited.

Music in Our Schools 

In the past few years, the 

instrumental program at PHS has 

nearly tripled in size. There has also 

been the development of new choirs 

and events focusing on the musical 

talents of our students. The National 

Association for Music Education has 

officially designated March as “Music 

in Our Schools Month.” In celebration 

of the occasion, Joanna Fusco, PHS 

Music teacher, organized a Music in 

Our Schools performance. Donated 

instruments were used during the 

celebration. The evening culminated 

in a variety of performances from 

student-choreographed dance 

routines, singing duets and trios to 

performances by the Wind Ensemble, 

Step Team, Gospel Choir and newly 

formed A Cappella Choir. The evening 

was a huge success! 


Student Life 

Spiritual Panthers 

Religious Studies 

All students are enrolled in Religion courses. Activities coordinated with religious 

studies include communal prayer, liturgies, celebrations of major Church 

feasts, retreats for all classes, and Christian service. The service program is 

an opportunity to apply the teachings of the Gospel and the Church to real-life 

situations. Service projects include service to their families at home for Freshmen, 

service at school for Sophomores, and service in church or civic communities for 

Juniors, and service as an extension of their co-curricular activities for Seniors. 

As part of the total school program, these activities require the participation of all 

students and the cooperation of parents. 

Emmaus Retreat Program 

Beginning in the early 1970’s, Emmaus is a Catholic retreat program that is open to 

PHS Juniors and Seniors of all faiths. It provides its participants the opportunity to 

reconnect with what matters and share their faith journeys in a loving community. 

Under the guidance of our Campus Minister and experienced faculty members, 

students spend two days and two nights at the Retreat Center on the RDC’s Good 

Counsel campus in White Plains. Each retreat 

is all about discovery. Students realize how God 

is truly active in their lives, how special and 

unique each student is to others, and how those 

around them need their unique talents and gifts. 

Through the Emmaus experience, participants 

build valuable relationships through friendship, 

encouragement, prayer and their personal 

connection to God. To date, over 300 alumnae 

have been a part of Emmaus.

2010 Graduates 

The tradition of PHS graduates going on to 

higher learning continues. Of the 136 PHS 

2010 graduating class: 

• 63% have collectively earned over $10 

million in college scholarships. 

• 136 earned NY State Regents Diplomas. 

• 33 earned the honor of Advanced 

Designation and 

• 7 others earned the title of Advanced 

Designation with Honors.

PHS Graduates are accepted to a wide range of colleges and universities, 

including some of the most selective schools in the nation. Alumnae consistently 

report back that they feel “well prepared” to handle the academic demands of their 

college curricula.

Boston University, George Washington University, Pace University, Fordham 

University, FIT, NYU, and many of the SUNY schools.

Alumnae News 

Alumnae Reunion 2010 

Over 200 alumnae and former faculty came from near and far to converge at 

Preston High School on March 27 for the 2010 Alumnae Reunion. The event 

celebrated graduates from the classes of 1955, 1960, 1965, 1970, 1975, 1980, 

1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, and 2005. Alumnae first joined in a liturgical celebration 

with Reverend Paul Ruwe of St. Benedict’s Church. Afterwards, additional alumnae 

joined the celebration with a formal welcome ceremony led by Jane Grendell, 

principal, and Peggy Sobier ’63, director of advancement, who updated alumnae 

on life at PHS in 2010. 

The 2010 Alumnae Service Award was presented to Zandra Coles-Lightbourne 

’65. This generous lady is always ready, willing and able to do whatever she can to 

help the school and truly exemplifies the PHS spirit.

Peggy Sobier never strayed far from Preston High School 

after her graduation in 1963. After teaching French for much 

of her life, along with raising her three beautiful children, 

Sobier entered the world of fundraising while working at the 

Old Westbury School of the Holy Child and later at Hi-Hello 

Child Care Center. 

According to Sr. Lucille Coldrick, RDC, PHS principal 

from 1991-2008, “Along with her professional talents and 

experience, Peggy brought an extraordinary loyalty to PHS. 

Whole-heartedly invested in advancing the mission of her 

alma mater, regardless of the challenges it presented, she 

never swerved from her generous commitment to the best 

interests of our young women. 

Peggy’s decision to retire affords her the opportunity to spend more time with 

her husband Ray, also retired, and more freedom to visit her grandchildren in 

California. Sobier vows to remain connected to PHS.

On January 8, 2010 PHS hosted their Annual 

College Alumnae Brunch to celebrate graduates 

from the Classes of ‘09, ‘08, ‘07, and ‘06. 

Over 200 young women gathered in PHS’s gym 

on January 9th to reconnect with former classmates 

and to share their post-graduation experiences with 

PHS’s current senior class.

Preston High School Parent Association 

The PHS Parent Association plays a vital role at PHS, serving as a forum for 

parents, a catalyst for social gatherings, and a fundraising arm of the school. 

Attendance at PA meetings and support 

of sponsored events, presence at parent 

meetings conducted by the administration, 

ongoing communication with teachers and 

administrators, support of the school in 

pursuit of its mission, and enforcement of its 

policies and regulations are some ways that 

collaboration is mutually effective. We are 

extremely grateful to all of our parents for 

supporting the PA.

2nd Annual PHS Golf Classic 

On May 7, golfers gathered at Pelham/Split Rock Golf Course for the Second 

Annual Preston High School Golf Classic sponsored by Westchester Bank. PHS 

parent, Tom McMahon, was the chairperson of this event for the second year in a 

row and he was enthusiastic about the support from the community. 

Golfers enjoyed a hot buffet breakfast 

before teeing off at 8am with a modified 

shotgun start on the grounds of Pelham Golf 

Course at Pelham/Split Rock, which is run 

by American Golf Corporation. McMahon 

and his committee set up a number of 

specialty holes for golfers including a $50k 

hole-in-one. The day commenced with a 

cocktail reception and an awards luncheon 

at the pavilion where there were raffles and 

a live and silent auction. The PHS Parent 

Association is pleased to report that the 

Golf Classic raised over $20,000.

Today’s Legacy, Tomorrow’s Promise 

The Campaign for Preston High School 

Thank you to all who have contributed to the Today’s Legacy, Tomorrow’s Promise 

campaign since its launch in 2007. As of August 31, 2010 PHS completed Phase 

1 of its capital renovation project, which raised approximately $1,230,000, mostly 

from individual donors. Your support helped us to raise the much needed capital 

funds to renovate our facilities and create state-of-the art science laboratories. 

In the summer of 2011, PHS will complete the creation of a science suite 

adjacent to our current computer labs that will consist of a total of 4 laboratories. 

This will involve the renovation of our current Biology and Chemistry labs and 

the conversion of current classroom and office spaces into additional labs. 

These rooms will have not only new furniture, lab equipment and technology, 

but their design will facilitate up-to-date pedagogical practices. These rooms 

will be equipped with new safety equipment, energy-efficient windows and air 

conditioning. In addition, we will install a new roof on the main building which 

will result in further energy cost savings and a more comfortable year-round 

environment.

On October 15, 2009 PHS held a gala celebration in honor of our donors to the 

Today’s Legacy, Tomorrow’s Promise Campaign. Fr. Michael Sullivan, Deacon 

John Murphy, and Deacon Anthony Cassaneto blessed our Tree of Recognition 

in the main lobby and asked God to bless the donors whose contributions during 

the first five years of our campaign have 

allowed us to move forward with our 

plans to modernize our facilities.

the Monsignor Preston Award for 

Educational Excellence and Dedicated

In celebration of Anna Randazzo’s 

life and thankful for her generous

its first Sr. Loretta Carey Award for
