Celebrating 10, Planning for 20 

e 2009–2010 academic year was a banner year for the Radcliffe Institute and a year of great celebration, 

despite the constraints imposed by the economic downturn. ough smaller and leaner, 

the Radcliffe Institute Fellowship Program, Schlesinger Library, and Academic Engagement Programs 

all forged ahead with their respective activities. e Institute’s faculty and staff leaders 

responded to the projected five years of reduced resources by cutting budgets strategically in 

ways that both protected the excellence of the Institute’s core programs and prepared the stage 

for new growth. 

e year opened with a resoundingly successful 10th Anniversary Symposium at the Institute 

in October. e symposium aimed to give friends of the Institute a taste of the kinds of interactions 

fellows enjoy on a daily basis during their fellowship year. Multidisciplinary panel discussions 

on challenging intellectual topics sparked moments of epiphany for many supporters as they 

witnessed firsthand the types of experiences through which a year at the Radcliffe Institute 

changes fellows’ work and lives. We then shared the success of this 10th Anniversary Symposium 

on a smaller scale with friends of the Institute in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and 

Washington, DC. 

Although the Fellowship Program had fewer fellows in 2009–2010, the richness of their experience 

was in no way diminished. e class was robust in geographic diversity, with international 

scholars hailing from the Australia, Canada, France, India, Israel, and the United Kingdom, along 

with two scholars at risk. e mix of perspectives and fields in this year’s fellowship class engendered 

many cross-disciplinary interactions. Informal clusters developed during the year on filmmaking 

and various approaches to the study of music. Formal clusters on economics and 

mathematics gave rise to serendipitous cross-disciplinary interaction, as economists and mathematicians 

came together to consider common issues and interests. is year also marked the Institute’s 

first “Math Week,” featuring three presentations on varied topics that gave fellows an idea of 

the breadth of the field of mathematics. Fellows in the creative arts interacted with the local arts 

community in new ways, and new collaborations were begun—including one between a poet and 

an Arabic scholar on translations of Arabic poetry and another between world-class documentary 

makers working in vastly 

different areas. 

e 2009–2010 year was one of great productivity for the Schlesinger Library. e Maximum 

Access Project made impressive progress, with the 10 additional staff members who have joined 

this effort since 2007–2008 successfully processing 2,267 linear feet of manuscript material; completing 

descriptions for 8,000 audio-visual items; cataloging 7,000 published volumes; and creating 

at least minimal entries for another 5,000 published volumes. is year, the library also added 

to its holdings 72 new collections and approximately 2,600 print titles. It hosted more than 3,500 

visitors whose research in the Schlesinger Library collections produced a significant number of 

monographs. Undergraduates continued to flock to the library for research on many diverse topics. 

One undergraduate was inspired to write a play based on the diaries of a Radcliffe student in

the 1950s. A survey of manuscripts in the Harvard University Libraries confirmed that the extent 

and range of the Schlesinger Library’s manuscript collections is extraordinary. e library is 

ranked behind only the Harvard University Archives and the historical collections at Baker Library, 

while no other library in the Harvard University system outranks the Schlesinger Library 

in its diversity of topics. In honor of the 150th anniversary of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s birth, the 

library digitized her lectures, correspondence, diaries, drawings, and dras. 

e Institute’s Academic Engagement Programs (AEP) continued to expand as the faculty 

leaders, assisted by new director Rebecca Wassarman, generated many exciting programs and activities. 

Faculty leaders in the sciences launched two new programs aimed at creating connections 

through informal discussions: Meet-the-Investigator Lunches brought students together with faculty, 

and Faculty-Fellow Roundtables connected faculty with current fellows. AEP also hosted 

three workshops on different facets of paper in anticipation of the “Why Books” converence in 

the fall of 2010. is year’s gender conference, “Inside/Out: Exploring Gender and Space in Life, 

Culture, and Art” marked a first by featuring an artist on each panel, thus fully integrating the 

arts in line with Harvard’s newly launched Arts Initiative. It also marked the Institute’s first official 

collaboration with the Graduate School of Design. Corresponding exhibits at the Schlesinger 

Library and at the Graduate School of Design highlighted themes from the conference and reinforced 

the collaborative nature of this event. e science symposium focused on “Patterning in 

Nature,” bringing together scientists and scholars from around the world to consider natural patterns, 

from the microscopic aspects of chemical structures to the macroscopic array of objects in 

the sky. Social science faculty leaders mounted a workshop in May on “e Politics and Practice 

“The Politics and Practice of Comparative Effectiveness Research” drew faculty from six 

Harvard schools for a cross-disciplinary discussion regarding goals, conduct, and 

implementation of research on treatment effectiveness in US health care.

effectiveness in US health care. is year’s Dean’s Lecture Series also attracted record audiences, 

with several lectures drawing capacity crowds. During the year, the Institute also brought faculty 

together to plan for the fall 2010 conference “Why Books” on the history and future of the book, 

and for the spring 2011 gender conference, which will focus on the ways gender influences and interacts 

with health, education, shiing populations, politics, and technology and media in the developing 

world. 

e 10th anniversary year closed with a remarkable Radcliffe Day celebration. Hundreds of 

alumnae/i filled the American Repertory eatre for a panel discussion with Radcliffe College 

and Institute alumnae/i titled “Feminism en and Now.” e Radcliffe Institute Annual Luncheon 

was a resounding success, with nearly 850 alumnae and friends of the Institute gathering to 

honor Gloria Steinem, the 2010 Radcliffe Institute Medalist. Steinem’s address was radical, rousing, 

thought-provoking, and entertaining. It was wonderful to see so many alumnae/i and friends 

come together for this occasion. 

As we celebrated the achievements of our first decade, we also began to imagine the ways that 

the Institute might evolve in its second decade. In the spring, we launched a Long-Range Planning 

Process to develop a 10-year vision for the Institute. With this long-term view in mind, the

process has focused on defining goals for the next five years. e Long-Range Planning Process 

engaged the efforts of a broad cross-section of the Institute’s constituents—including faculty, fellows, 

staff, and friends of the Institute—in working groups charged with identifying goals and 

objectives for the Fellowship Program, the Schlesinger Library, Academic Engagement Programs, 

and institutional support and infrastructure. A broad cross-section of the Institute’s constituents 

are represented in the working groups and in the Long-Range Planning Committee overseeing 

the process. eir overwhelming enthusiasm about the Institute’s work has been both gratifying 

and inspiring. e Long-Range Planning Process will help us to build strategically on the foundation 

of our first decade and launch us into our second with an ambitious but realistic plan that 

positions the Institute for continued success and expanded contributions to intellectual exploration 

at the frontiers of knowledge. 

I hope you share my excitement about the future of the Radcliffe Institute, as well as my pride 

in the Institute’s past. e 2010–2011 academic year promises to be one of new growth and continued 

groundbreaking activity. I look forward to sharing news about the Institute’s activities and 

our Long-Range Planning Process with you in the coming months.

Celebration and Gratitude 

e Radcliffe Institute’s 10th anniversary was a time to celebrate the outstanding accomplishments 

of the last decade. It also was a time to reflect on the extraordinary generosity of the many alumnae/i 

and friends who have helped to create this success. 

e alumnae/i, friends, and past fellows who came together in October for the 10th Anniversary 

Symposium enjoyed an intimate look at the interdisciplinary exchanges and accomplishments that 

exemplify the Institute. Former fellows shared their cutting-edge work—from advances in medical 

science to the art of fiction writing—and experts in digital information discussed the future of 

scholarly research and collaboration. Harvard and Radcliffe College leaders who helped found the 

Institute reflected on Radcliffe’s remarkable transformation. At the celebration, Dean Barbara Grosz 

expressed her gratitude for the generosity and commitment of those whose support of the Institute 

assured its steady ascent to become one the premier institutes for advanced study in the world. 

Over the last 10 years, 20 fellowships have been endowed, and numerous other endowed funds 

have been created to support the Schlesinger Library, Academic Engagement Programs, dean’s discretionary 

funds, programming for science and history, and the Radcliffe Research Partnership 

program. e Radcliffe Class of 1954 initiated a tradition of designating 50th reunion class gis to 

the Schlesinger Library, a commitment that has been sustained by six subsequent classes. ese 

classes have raised almost $1.9 million for the acquisition, processing, preservation, and digitization 

of collections at the Schlesinger Library. And thousands of alumnae/i, fellows, and friends have 

given each year to the Radcliffe Annual Fund, providing vital support for the Institute’s operating 

budget. e Institute’s success would not have been possible without the generosity and commitment 

of so many. 

We also are deeply grateful to Radcliffe’s many friends who supported the scholarly and creative 

work of the Institute during the past year. Gis and pledges to the Radcliffe Institute in FY10 totaled 

$2,848,591. is figure is lower than the previous year, a reflection of the economic landscape

in essential support for the core programs of the Institute, including $447,600 for the Maximum 

Access Project, so critically important to the Schlesinger Library.

College alumnae and the growing cohort of Radcliffe Institute alumnae/i. Cheers and a standing 

ovation greeted Radcliffe Institute Medalist Gloria Steinem when Dean Grosz invited her to the 

podium to accept the award. In an innovative change from previous years, the morning program 

was created to reflect the life work of the medalist. A panel representing College alumnae and past 

Bunting and Radcliffe Institute fellows spoke about the impact of the feminist movement from var-

ious perspectives, filling the American Repertory eatre to capacity. More than 500 guests attended. 

Earlier that morning, members of the Ann Radcliffe Society—those who have made a commitment 

to include the Institute in their estate plans—attended a breakfast featuring a fellow 

speaking about her research on Muslim women in Southeast Asia. 

e year yielded several other highlights: 

• e Radcliffe Alumnae Professorship and the Radcliffe Alumnae Fellowship, which were endowed 

with gis from hundreds of alumnae, supported outstanding women faculty in the Faculty 

of Arts and Sciences. Sophie Morel, the first woman tenured in the mathematics department, was 

appointed to the Radcliffe Alumnae Professorship. Ann Pearson, professor of biogeochemistry in 

the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, was the inaugural Radcliffe Alumnae Fellow. She 

was granted tenure shortly before she began her fellowship. 

• Alumnae/i in Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, and Washington, DC, heard Radcliffe 

fellows speak at events in those cities on topics as varied as the impact of World War II and 

the Algerian War on attitudes and practice in France; the endangered pernambuco tree and the impending 

crisis in classical music; racial and ethnic change in American politics; and form and function 

in nanotechnology, politics, and art. 

• A rich array of programming—such as the gender conference, lectures, fellows’ talks, and the 

science symposium—drew numerous Boston area alumnae/i and friends to Radcliffe Yard to take 

part in the stimulating intellectual offerings of the Institute. 

It has been a pleasure for me to lead the advancement office in this time of transition. e support 

of alumnae/i and friends and the commitment of our advancement staff in this anniversary 

year have been especially gratifying. ank you for your generosity, your attendance at our events, 

and your informal yet critical role as ambassadors. 

We look forward to the arrival of Associate Dean for Advancement Karen Putnam, who comes 

to the Institute with many years of experience in fundraising and nonprofit management. I know 

you will enjoy your interactions with her and that she, in turn, will enjoy the opportunity to engage 

you in the exciting work of the Institute.

financial summary 

A Conservative Approach 

Planning for the 2009–2010 fiscal year included sobering assumptions about reductions in endowment 

distribution each year for three years. e Radcliffe Institute is highly dependent on this 

source of revenue (76 percent of our income, when Harvard rents are restated as income). Our longrange 

projections indicated that we would need to cut the budget significantly in 2009–2010 to increase 

our reserves, allowing us to cover expected draws on the reserves in the next five years. 

anks to the hard work of our staff and leadership, we succeeded. 

Revenue in 2009–2010 was 4 percent lower than in 2008–2009, but 9 percent higher than anticipated 

in the spring of 2009. Several funds that we expected to be underwater (with insufficient appreciation 

to support a full payout) were not, resulting in $1.6 million in additional revenue. 

Current-use gi income grew by 50 percent or $ .8 million. anks to the efforts of the advancement 

team and our generous donors, annual giving—which we had expected to be flat or declining— 

grew by 5 percent, coming in at $ .2 million more than budgeted. Restricted gi income and bequest 

income also exceeded our budget assumptions by $ .6 million. As of June 30, 2010, the market value 

of our endowment is $465 million, an increase of 5 percent over the prior year. 

e 12 percent decrease in 2009–2010 expenses was distributed across all areas of the Institute. 

Due to careful cost control by all our staff members, every department stayed within its budget. 

Spending in program costs went down 20 percent, with every program spending significantly less. 

We made program cuts, including reducing the number of events in the Academic Engagement 

Programs, decreasing the number of fellows, and staff reductions at the library. Both operations and 

advancement spent less in equally large amounts. Operations deferred most projects not deemed to 

be urgent, eliminated a part-time position, and achieved lower utility costs due to mild weather. Advancement 

costs were lower because of staff reductions and multiple staff vacancies. 

Clearly, not all of these spending reductions are sustainable. We are, however, building back 

carefully, with an eye toward the goals and objectives of the Long-Range Planning Process that will 

be completed this fall. Two areas of growth in spending over 2008–2009 were the costs of the staff 

reductions ($ .3 million), a one-time cost, and an increase in interest on debt due to the fact that the 

Byerly Hall loan repayment started in the middle of 2008–2009. 

Operating expenses include $ .9 million in interest on debt and debt principal payments of $7.4 

million. Our reserves increased more than expected because of the increase in revenue and 

decreases in expenses over original plans. We used this additional money to pay off the loan on the
