GREENPRINT News from the Scottish Green Party Naidheachdan o Phàrtaidh Uaine na h-Alba European election battle hotting up By Cllr Gavin Corbett Scotland elects 6 MEPs on 22 May and the race for the final seat is likely to go down to the wire, with the Greens’ Maggie Chapman and UKIP the main contenders. That is not just a contest to see who can reach the likely threshold of 10% of votes; it is between the two parties furthest apart on the political spectrum: Greens, who are pro-public service; decentralist; relaxed about people coming to Scotland; and firmly rooted in Scottish life. And UKIP, gung-ho about privatisation; climate-changedenying; anti-foreigner; and caught up in a civil war which demonstrates that they have no roots or interest in Scotland. The media obsession with UKIP will leak over the Border in waves. There’s a real possibility the party will make a breakthrough here that would utterly misrepresent its relevance to Scots. The election of the first Scottish Green MEP stands in UKIP’s way. That is why we have developed a positive, forward-looking campaign – illustrating Green credentials as champions of social justice and the trust people place in us to safeguard the planet. It was Green MEPs who first took action on bankers’ bonuses; Greens who push for public ownership of the railways; and Green MSPs and councillors who instinctively put communities before big business every time. Every vote will count. For every TV spot UKIP gets we’ll need people on the ground, delivering newsletters or passing on our social media messages. And we urgently need your money. We don’t have millionaire backing. We have you: giving £5, £50 or £500 (even £5,000 if you have it!) to ensure the Green message is heard loud and clear. Please return the form on the back page or give what you can online. I believe Maggie Chapman will be the first Scottish Green MEP. On 22 May, you can make it happen.
