WORK HISTORY<br />
I’m a filmmaker, graduated from the Turku Art Academy, specialized in a children’s media culture.<br />
I'm working for an organisation, Videootit, starting a new project called Video wagon. It will offer practical media<br />
education to children around Finland.<br />
I've been working as a media educator in Finnish National Broadcasting Company's (YLE) Media bus - project running<br />
workshops for teens, teaching them to make short films from they own perspective to the Internet. Best of the<br />
produced films are being shown in the youth program called “My news”. I'm also working for the organisation,<br />
Videootit, organizing workshops and media happenings and Nordic and Baltic Kids for Kids competition.<br />
I am also in the process of writing a TV series for children while working on my own video and photography art<br />
projects.<br />
From 2002 to 2010, I have been working as a media pedagogue at the Pirkanmaa Film Centre in Tampere, Finland. My<br />
duties consist of planning and teaching various training programmes, mainly with children and their teachers. I hold<br />
practical workshops designed to guide children into the world of fiction, documentary and, ever increasingly during<br />
the last few years, animation.<br />
I was also the executive and artistic director of children's Videotivoli Festival and Nordic and Baltic KFK, which are<br />
organised jointly by the Tampere Film Festival and Pirkanmaa Film Centre. I am also collaborating with the Children's<br />
Programming Department of the Finnish Channel Two, writing a series Moving Images while holding animation<br />
workshops in conjunction with the series.<br />
During a year 2007, I made three music videos to for Tohtori Orff (Dr. Orff), a music group aimed for children for their<br />
commercial DVD. I’m also going to make several music videos to National TV’s children channel.<br />
Years 1991 – 2002 worked for two media organisations: Videootit and Media Metka organizing a youth film festival<br />
“My Film” (Minun Elokuvani) That time I also run several workshops from short fiction, documentary and animation<br />
field.<br />
I'm a member of CIFEJ, the UNESCO-based International Centre of Films for Children and Young People. I held a seat<br />
in the Board of Directors of CIFEJ in the years 2006 – 2009. In Finland I hold similar positions in the boards of the<br />
Videootit ry, Satakunta Moving Picture Centre and the Pirkanmaa Film Centre.<br />

Kantolan päiväkodeissa ja kouluissa toteuttamia animaatioita, sekä 20 –osaista ”Kuvat liikkuvat” –sarjaa, on esitetty<br />
TV” Pikku Kakkonen ohjelman alaisuudessa vuodesta 2003 lähtien.<br />
Avainkanava lokakuu – joulukuu 2006<br />
”Kuvat liikkuvat” 21 -osainen animaatiosarja on esitetty Avainkanavalla lokakuusta 2006 lähtien.<br />
Avainkanavaa tuottava BSMG Oy oli mukana Lempäälän Ideaparkin avajaisissa joulukuun ensimmäisellä viikolla 2006.<br />
He vastasivat avajaisten mobiiliTV-tuotannosta. ”Kuvat liikkuvat” animaatiot olivat mukana lasten teemakanavalla.<br />
Toinen näistä oli mobiiliTV eli kanava, joka toimii DBG-H –signaalialla (pystyy katsomaan ainoastaan TV-ominaisuuden<br />
sisältävällä puhelimella, joita Nokialla on tällä hetkellä yksi malli). Oikeaa mobiiliTV -lähetystä (useita teemakanavia)<br />
esitetiin Ideaparkin alueella 29.11. - 3.12. muutamassa demopuhelimessa ja mahdollisesti ajoittain osana alueen Infoscreenien<br />
kuva-alaa.<br />

Kantola oli lastenelokuvafestivaali Buster:in ja Animatiohuset:in kutsumana vetämässä animaatiopajaa 12. –<br />
17.9.2006. Pajaan osallistui kolme koulua, Skovvangskolen, 4.C fra Skolen ved Bülowsvej, BH, 1. og 2. klasse Krebs<br />
Skole ja yhteensä 90 oppilasta. Pajassa syntyi kolmella kameralla kuvattu, sekä live että palatekniikkaa yhdistelevä ja<br />
blue screen tekniikkaa käyttävä elokuva.<br />

An Indian tale about a hat seller who meets a gang of marauding, mimicking monkeys<br />
on his way to the market. The final vexation of the market vendor turns out to be the way to get back his wares.<br />

Lapseton ukko ja mummo leipoivat itselleen piparkakkupojan lapsekseen. Villi piparkakkupoika lähti kuitenkin<br />
matkoihinsa. Useat yrittivät maanitella häntä pysähtymään, mutta piparkakkupoika oli vikkelä jaloistaan. Yksi<br />
kohtaamistaan eläimistä oli kuitenkin viekkaampi kuin hän.<br />
A childless old man and woman baked a gingerbread boy to be their child, but the unruly gingerbread boy ran off.<br />
Many creatures tried to persuade him to stop, but the gingerbread boy was quick on his feet. However, one of the<br />
animals was smarter than him.<br />

Kolmen lappeenrantalaisen koulun kanssa toteutettu animaatio. Se tutkii ihmisen kehoa ja sen eri osia vakavasti ja<br />
hullutellen. Elokuva pohtii myös sielun olemusta ja ihmisten erilaisuutta.<br />
An animation realized with three schools in Lappeenranta. The animation looks at the human body and its parts both<br />
seriously and with a light-hearted approach. The film also considers the nature of the soul and the differences<br />
between people.<br />

Kevät 2006<br />
Nekalan koululla 6 luokan oppilaiden kanssa editoimassa liikuntaseikkailu -aiheisen mainoksen editoiminen. Lyhyt<br />
elokuva lähetettiin MTV:n kilpailuun. Tuloksena syntyi 40 sekunttinen mainos KERRAN SATUMAASSA │ ONCE IN THE<br />
FARYLAND 1’06’’<br />
Tampereen nuorisopsykiatrisen työryhmän rahoittama tyttökerho aloitti animaation tekemiseen valmistautumisen jo<br />
syksyllä 2005. Elokuva valmistui syksyllä 2006. Ryhmässä kokoontui viisi 15 – 18 -vuotiasta tyttöä.<br />
MIELIKUVITUSTA │ IMAGINATION 5’<br />
Palaanimaatiota sekä livekuvaa yhdistävä elokuva on kertomus yksinäisestä ja erilaisuudesta kärsivän nuoren neidon<br />
tunnoista siirtyessä uuteen kouluun.<br />
The film, mixing cut-out animation with live footage, is a story about a lonely girl who suffers from being different<br />
from others, and her feelings as she changes schools.<br />

A Mexican tale about a girl called Domitila. She keeps following her late mother’s advice to be careful and loving in<br />
all her doings. This is the way to solve even difficult situations and the story ends happily.<br />

Nekala school, class 6 – ONCE IN A FARYTALE LAND (KERRAN SATUMAASSA)<br />
editoimassa liikuntaseikkailu -aiheisen mainoksen editoiminen. Lyhyt elokuva lähetettiin MTV:n kilpailuun. Tuloksena<br />
syntyi 40 sekunttinen mainos<br />
Tampereen nuorisopsykiatrisen työryhmän rahoittama tyttökerho aloitti animaation tekemiseen valmistautumisen jo<br />
syksyllä 2005. Elokuva valmistui syksyllä 2006. Ryhmässä kokoontui viisi 15 – 18 -vuotiasta tyttöä.<br />
IMAGINATION (MIELIKUVITUSTA) 5’<br />
Palaanimaatiota sekä livekuvaa yhdistävä elokuva on kertomus yksinäisestä ja erilaisuudesta kärsivän nuoren neidon<br />
tunnoista siirtyessä uuteen kouluun.<br />

”Moving Images”, series 21 – 40<br />
2003<br />
Episodes 21 – 40 of the Moving Images -series deal with getting to know nature and protecting the environment.<br />
They are joint productions by the Children's Programming Department of YLE [the Finnish Broadcasting Company],<br />
the Pirkanmaa Film Centre and kindergartens in Tampere region.<br />
The series is made up of 20 six-minute episodes. Each episode entails a segment of activities with children and a<br />
segment of animation. Maikki Kantola did the background research, amassed information, obtained the materials and<br />
contacted collaborators. The series was co-written together with director Anna-Liisa Kirsi.<br />
The animations were produced in workshops with kindergarten children aged 5 and 6. The stories emerged from<br />
topics that were presented to the children in fairy-tale forms. Stories were dramatized into a script by Maikki Kantola.<br />
The children prepared the characters and backgrounds. The animations were made using different techniques, and<br />
they made use of various natural materials. The animation and the soundtracks of the films were created by the<br />
children themselves under my tutelage. The animation was carried out with the frame rec -function of a Sony DV -<br />
