Travel back in time to Spain’s Golden Age! Your

sightseeing tour takes you to the Puerta del Sol, the

heart of this Spanish capital. At Plaza Mayor, you’ll

learn about this grand square’s history of bullfights,

royal weddings and public executions. At the Prado

art museum, behold paintings like Velázquez’s Las

Meninas and Goya’s paired canvases. Continue to

the green gardens and monuments of the Plaza de

Oriente before visiting the extravagant Palacio Real

for a taste of royal Madrid. Wander the fabulous

interior of this palace, which contains more than

2,000 rooms decked in extravagant frescoes,

delicate porcelain wares and finely woven rugs.

Tour the striking city of Salamanca, sometimes called the

land of Spanish scholars. Today, it is an exuberant blend

of age-old academic tradition and contemporary student

life. View the distinctive sandstone architecture in the heart

of the city, and visit the 12th century “Old” Cathedral and

the 17 th century “New” Cathedral. You’ll also see the halls,

courtyards and classrooms of Salamanca University, the

most prestigious in Spain. Pope Alexander IV once dubbed

this institution “one of the four leading lights of the world,”

aligning it with Europe’s other medieval centres of learning

in Bologna, Paris and Oxford. As you tour the campus,

learn about the academic legends and superstitions that

persist among Salamanca’s students even today!

Experience the quaint atmosphere as you

make your way through the labyrinth of winding

streets in Lisbon’s Alfama district. Discover

the hidden balconies, archways, terraces and

courtyards of this hillside medieval quarter as

you explore Lisbon’s former centre of Moorish

aristocracy. See where Portugal’s early kings

resided at the Castelo de São Jorge, built

to overlook the city and Tagus River. Recall

the Age of Discovery at the Monument to

Discoveries and the Belém Tower. It was from

here that many adventure-seeking navigators

including Bartolomeu Dias set sail.
