OLAP vs. Relational Reporting
OLAP (Analysis)
• Self service analysis to
improve insights & decisions
• Browse data to collect
information
• Slice, Dice, Drill to understand
correlations (insights)
• Self Service for std or ad-hoc
needs
• Answer questions to improve
decisions
Relational Reporting
• Pixel perfect detailed
transactional reporting
• Collect all information and
then analyze
• Specific queries for specific
questions
• Ad-hoc questions require
developer to create new
reports
• Often takes time forcing
decisions from gut

OLAP Terminology
• Dimensions
• Represent how the data is accessed.
• Usually represent a person, place, thing, or concept.
• Answers the who, what, when, or where part of a question.
• Presents the “how” or “by” part of the question.
• Hierarchy
• A hierarchical view of a dimension
• E.g. Date Dimension with a calendar hierarchy
• All Dates • All Dates
•• Year
••• Quarter
•••• Month
••••• Date
•• 2009
••• Q1-2009
•••• Jan 2009
••••• 1-1-2009

• Measures
OLAP Terminology
• A Measure is a key metric (numeric value) by which the cube
is based upon.
• Are often the key performance indicators (KPI) of a company.
• Are the “what” part of the question.
• I want to see dollar sales (and GM, Costs…) by month by
state…
• Are almost always additive, discrete, and easily measured.
