It is an emergency Back on the trail Diamond Jubilee
page 3 page 4 page 6
From our CEO
With warm weather upon us, it’s time to begin planning family vacations, getting our children ready to attend area
summer camps and enjoying our beautiful mountains with bike rides and hikes. It’s easy to stay active this time of
year and I challenge our community to find outdoor activities to do as a family or participate in a fun run or 5k.
Our Wellness Wherever section includes all of the upcoming races and activities that we are proud to be a part of
this summer.
As our community becomes more active in the coming months, we know that accidents and injuries can also
become more prevalent. In this issue we will discuss when to go see your primary care provider, when to use an
urgent care facility and when an illness or injury warrants a visit to the emergency department. We will also
highlight one of our recent joint replacement recipients as he describes his challenges with joint pain and how
Pardee’s orthopedic services helped him get back to his active lifestyle.
In the coming months, our team members will celebrate our hospital’s heritage, dating back 60 years, as we reflect
on the many additions to our campus, innovations in health care and our loyal community that we have had the
pleasure of caring for. You will also read about how the Pardee Hospital Foundation is celebrating our 60th
anniversary with their Diamond Jubliee Gala open to everyone in our community.
In the years before Pardee Hospital, Patton Hospital, built in 1913, served the Henderson County’s health care needs
for many years. It wasn’t until the early 1950’s, when the physicians who were practicing at Patton saw the growth
occurring in the community and the new technologies that were becoming available to treat patients. Patton
Hospital was small and lacked the expansion space for additional surgery, an improved emergency room, intensive
care unit and private patient rooms.
Three forward-thinking physicians, Dr. Nick Fortescue, Dr. E. McQueen Salley, and Dr. Fred Trotter, purchased
property on Fleming Street with plans to hold and then release the property at the original cost, “when the time was
right.” Led by Dr. Nick Fortescue, the Henderson County Hospital Association was formed and planning efforts
began for our community hospital, including raising the funds needed for construction. The vision of these first
physicians for a state-of-the art community hospital fueled their efforts and led to the founding of Margaret R.
Pardee Memorial Hospital on November 15, 1953.
The dedication of these founding physicians attracted excellent additional practitioners, a tradition that has
continued throughout the 60 year history of Pardee, bringing national certifications and recognitions of quality
health care nearly every year. Today, Pardee continues to develop our talented team members, technological
capabilities and quality standards to provide our community with the best patient outcomes and cost efficiencies. As
we continue to evolve and expand, we are most proud that the majority of Pardee’s health care providers have
earned national accreditation and certifications and are highly ranked in their fields.
From the original physicians to today’s nationally recognized medical staff, to the volunteers and team members
who provide customer service, Pardee Hospital continues to uphold the community vision established in 1953 to be
the best health care resource for Henderson County and the surrounding communities.
If the condition is not an emergency, but can’t wait until
tomorrow, then Urgent Care is the best
option. Urgent Care is available when you know you do not
need emergency care, but your provider’s office is closed, and you can’t
wait to visit your provider in the morning.
Urgent Care centers are best used for minor illnesses
and injuries including:
Many Urgent Care centers have extended hours of operation that
include evenings and weekends, can file most major insurance carriers
and many can treat a number of conditions that can save you a costly
and long visit to the emergency department.
Pardee Urgent Care also provides routine screenings and services including:
Is it an emergency
If the illness or injury is non-life threatening and it is during normal
When a health-related episode or illness strikes you or
your family, it’s important to know what your health
care options are. You need to consider what medical
attention is needed and how soon you will need to get it
treated, the proximity of the nearest facility and what is
going to be covered by insurance. With these helpful
tools, you can decide if it can wait until you can visit
your provider, if you need to visit an Urgent Care or if
you need to go to the Emergency Room. If you or a
loved one is having a health-related episode, the first
thing you should do is decide if it is an emergency. Can
it wait or does it require immediate attention
• Flu screenings
• Strep screenings
• Routine and sports physicals
• Digital X-ray services
business hours, you should make an appointment with your
primary care provider. Making sure you and
your loved ones have a primary care provider is critical because they will
know the most about your current health state and can offer better solutions that will
best fit your lifestyle. Many primary care providers can work-in regular patients if an
unscheduled visit is needed and your co-pay will be the least expensive.
If you have not established a primary care provider, our PardeeSelect provider network
can help. By visiting PardeeSelect.org, you can take a short compatibility test and find a
provider who best matches your personality and health care needs. You can also watch
video interviews in which our expert providers discuss their education, medical
interests and approach to care.
If you are certain it is an emergency, or you feel that it is
life-threatening, your best option is to go to the closest
Emergency Department.
You should also call 911, especially for chest pain and signs of stroke.
The emergency department is the best place to treat
serious conditions including:
If you come to the emergency department with a non-life-threatening
condition, you could experience a long wait. Each patient who comes to
the emergency department is assessed by a specially-trained triage
nurse. This nurse is responsible for assigning a triage level predefined
by the Emergency Nurses Association and the American College of
Emergency Physicians. This triage level determines the order in which
patients are seen and the most serious conditions are treated first. You
will also need to consider the larger co-pay that comes with a visit to the
emergency department.
Pardee’s Joint Camp Representative, Brianna Stepp,
called Rob shortly after his visit with Dr. Brooks to
explain everything that would be happening through
the surgery and recovery. Joint Camp, as explained by
Brianna, is a comprehensive recovery process where
physical therapists, nurses and other team members
lead patients through physical and occupational
therapy. She told Rob that Joint Camp was a critical
part of the recovery process and it started before you
even had surgery. Rob was skeptical that Joint Camp
could be that important to his recovery but decided to
give it a chance and do what Pardee’s orthopedic team
thought was best.
“It was amazing how quickly the pain
left. It was also amazing how quickly the
movement came back,” said Rob. “To
go from incapacitated, and essentially
bed-ridden, to having full movement with no
pain was amazing. The key to a successful
hip replacement, which I know now with
proficiency, is to get moving. It’s not like other
orthopedic surgery where you have to isolate it
for a while.”
When Rob arrived the day of surgery he was
immediately greeted by valet attendants and a
nurse who took him up to the surgical unit where
he prepared for and underwent his full right hip
replacement. After surgery, he was taken to a room in
Pardee’s Orthopedic Unit and was shocked to learn
that his recovery really was going to start right after
his surgery. “They got me out of bed about 12 hours
after surgery. I sat in a chair for about two hours, and
then it was time to get up and walk with your walker,”
explained Rob. “The amazing thing was having been
prepared for it through Joint Camp, you knew what
was coming; there were no surprises.”
Following his discharge, Rob continued to recuperate
and was able to do low-impact exercises one week after
his surgery. Two weeks later, he happily trekked up
Big Glassy Mountain at the Carl Sandburg Home in
Flat Rock. Today, Rob is still hiking on a weekly basis,
especially to his favorite spot on Big Glassy Mountain.
He appreciates the attentiveness and personal care
that he received from Pardee that helped him get
back to doing all of the things he loved to do. “The
Orthopedic team at Pardee was marvelous. They’ve
been down this road so many times before, but you
know that you are not just a number. They brought
joy to the recovery and it was as painless and easy as
something like a joint replacement can be.”
Throughout the next days of his hospital stay, Rob
continued in Joint Camp, participating in group
When Rob Wood woke up one spring morning last year, he knew
something wasn’t right. He had been experiencing pain in his hip that
had come on suddenly over the past month and it was getting worse
each day.
His struggles with hip pain came to a head when he went on a
European vacation with his wife and had to go buy a cane so he could
continue walking through towns, museums and markets and try to
enjoy the rest of his trip.
physical therapy with other new joint recipients. He
was pleasantly surprised at how much it truly made
a difference to have the support of other patients
who knew what he was going through. At the end of
the week, he was able to celebrate with his wife and
Watch Rob’s story on Pardee Hospital’s
YouTube channel, KeepingYouWell.
fellow Joint Campers at a celebration dinner hosted
As an avid hiker, Rob was devastated by this abrupt pain that stayed
with him constantly, making it difficult to do the outdoor activities
that he loved to do. “I’m self-diagnosed as having aging jock
syndrome,” said Rob. “I’ve always been pretty active and I’m use to
the aches and pains that came along, but then my hip started hurting
constantly.”
When Rob returned home he immediately made an appointment with
orthopedic surgeon, Werner Brooks, at Blue Ridge Bone & Joint, who
is an affiliated surgeon at Pardee. Dr. Brooks told Rob that his right
hip was in bad shape and he would need a full hip replacement in
order to get him back to his active lifestyle.
by the Orthopedic Center. The next day he was
discharged and was able to walk out of Pardee without
a wheelchair, walker or cane.
Diamond Jubilee
This year, Pardee Hospital is celebrating its 60th anniversary. This is
a time to reflect on the hospital’s beginnings and celebrate its many
accomplishments over the past six decades. It’s also a time for all of us
to come together to show our continued support for our community
hospital. Since 1953, Pardee has been committed to providing the
most advanced health care for our community. Many expansions and
renovations have transformed Pardee into what it is today; with multiple
outpatient facilities throughout Henderson County including nine offices
that make up our comprehensive provider network.
The Pardee Hospital Foundation exists to educate the community about
Pardee and solicit financial support. Over the years, the foundation has
raised nearly $30 million which has helped purchase new technology,
renovate the Orthopedic wing, enlarge the emergency department,
provide free mammograms to women without insurance, upgrade
facilities and provide financial support to all areas of the hospital at one
time or another.
This year the foundation is hosting a Diamond Jubilee Gala, and you’re
all invited to attend. It’s the community’s opportunity to thank Pardee
for its years of service, for caring for the health of this community and
for providing Henderson County with the most advanced and excellent
clinical care in the state. It’s a party open to everyone and you won’t want
to miss it.
The foundation will also be presenting two very special awards at the
Diamond Jubilee Gala. This year’s Healthcare Philanthropist of the
Year will be the tenth individual to receive this prestigious award. Each
year the foundation honors a member of the community that has made
an outstanding contribution to Pardee Hospital, the Pardee Hospital
Foundation and for the improvement of the community’s health care.
The recipient acts as an advocate for philanthropy and perpetuates
giving within the community. In addition, we will be awarding the
first Physician of the Year Award. This will be an annual award given
to a Pardee physician whose career has been defined by medical
excellence, dedication to compassionate patient care and a commitment
to improving the lives of countless hundreds of people throughout the
community.
The Diamond Jubilee Gala is open to the public. For
