1.2 Overview of the NGOs and study areas<br />

The NGOs that undertook the <strong>Community</strong> Needs and CSO studies were selected<br />

through an open tender process that was established after consulting with different civil<br />

society organisations and government agencies in Papua. The studies were undertaken<br />

by well-known, Papua-based (and non-international) NGO’s experienced in<br />

assessments with both communities and civil society representatives in selected districts<br />

and kabupaten. All had some experience in the areas of governance, poverty<br />

reduction/human security strategies, environment and community-based natural<br />

resource management. The NGOs delineated their study areas according to their<br />

geographic and cultural knowledge, and considering the need to present realities from a<br />

cross-section of the diverse sub-regions of Papua.<br />

The NGOs and their study areas are shown with village population figures in Table 1.<br />

Figure 1 presents a general map of the locations where the assessments were<br />

conducted.<br />
