Commitment to Diversity
From 1999 to 2009, MLH spending with minority and
women-owned vendors has grown from 4 percent to
approximately 12 percent of annual spending. Total
minority and women-owned vendor spending in 2009
was $70.5 million up from $41.8 million in 2008. This
remarkable 68 percent increase was substantially
related to local minority and women-owned businesses
participation in the Germantown and Le Bonheur
building projects.
Methodist was recognized over the last few years for
setting the standard for successful partnering by the
Mid-South Minority Business Council (MMBC), the
Black Business Association (BBA), the Small Business
Administration, the Memphis Business Development
Corporation and Premier, our national group
purchasing organization.

supplier diversity, workforce diversity, internal diversity
and community giving that has an economic impact
among minorities.
Methodist North Hospital is one of only six hospitals
nationwide chosen by the Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation to participate in a new effort to improve the
quality and equality of cardiac care delivered by
hospitals to racial and ethnic minority populations. The
Aligning Forces for Quality: Equity Quality Improvement
Collaborative (Equity QI Collaborative) will identify and
test ways for hospitals to improve the quality of their
cardiac care, while also identifying and reducing any
racial and ethnic disparities.
Methodist continued to build on our sense of fairness,
with president and CEO Gary Shorb being named the
Model Diversity Corporation CEO of the Year at the
Mid-South Minority Business Council Robert R. Church
Sr. Achievement Awards. Methodist continues to
demonstrate its commitment to diversity and inclusion
