ACCREDITATION and EDUCATIONAL CREDIT<br />

The VCU Department of Internal Medicine and<br />

Office of Continuing Medical Education are<br />

pleased to offer this diverse primary care<br />

educational activity featuring noted faculty<br />

from <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>Commonwealth</strong> <strong>University</strong>. This<br />

conference will include a broad range of<br />

contemporary clinical topics in primary care<br />

with the latest practical information designed<br />

to enhance your practice. The program is<br />

designed for physicians, nurse practitioners,<br />

and other primary care providers.<br />

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES<br />

By the end of this activity, the learner will be able to:<br />

Describe a strategy to evaluate the significance of chest pain and<br />

considerations for management<br />

Describe the changing epidemiology of C. difficile and the<br />

diagnostic testing recommended<br />

Select and prescribe appropriate topical steroid with attention<br />

to body surface area affected, application frequency and<br />

duration of therapy<br />

Describe the clinical impact of subclinical thyroid disorders,<br />

who should be treated and who should be observed<br />

Develop a differential diagnosis for ADD<br />

Appreciate the full range of treatment options for adults with<br />

ADD<br />

Implement the new/updated guidelines for Pap smear and<br />

pelvic examination. Provide the rationale for these changes and<br />

counsel patients appropriately<br />

Differentiate between carpal tunnel syndrome and other causes<br />

of parenthesis in the hands<br />

Describe the basic principles of nonoperative treatment of<br />

carpal tunnel syndrome and cubital tunnel syndrome<br />

Describe impending changes in practices drawn from recently<br />

published medical literature<br />

Describe motivational interviewing and its role in supporting<br />

effective change in weight loss as well as summarize efficacy<br />

and safety data regarding recently-approved weight loss<br />

medications<br />

Describe the consequences of chemotherapy and radiation<br />

therapy which may impact the health care of cancer survivors<br />

and become aware of the resources available for those who care<br />

for cancer survivors<br />

Explain typical symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and<br />

describe the diagnostic criteria for IBS<br />

Describe dyspnea associated with acute decompensated heart<br />

failure and the management techniques for this.<br />

Become familiar with new drugs available for COPD<br />

Describe the role of Pulmonary Rehab in COPD patients<br />

Perform general risk assessment and identify patients who are<br />

candidates for opioid use<br />

Use standardized practices to safely prescribe opiates<br />

Identify symptoms and signs that point to a particular headache<br />

diagnosis and listed symptomatic treatments for migraine.<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>System</strong> is accredited by the<br />

Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical<br />

Education to provide continuing medical education<br />

for physicians.<br />

UHS-PEP designates this live activity for a maximum<br />

of 9 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM . Physicians<br />

should claim only the credit commensurate with the<br />

extent of their participation in the activity.<br />

For the purpose of recertification, The American<br />

Credentialing Center accepts for AMA PRA Category<br />

1 Credits TM issued by organizations accredited by the<br />

ACCME. For the purpose of relicensure, the VA<br />

Board of Nursing accepts AMA PRA Category 1<br />

Credits TM (report up to 9.0 hours of credit and list<br />

“CME Category 1” as the provider number) as<br />

approved by one of the certifying entities outlined in<br />

the Nurse Practitioner Regulations.<br />

An application for CME credit has been filed with<br />

the American Academy of Family Physicians. The<br />

determination of credit is pending.<br />

This continuing education activity meets the criteria<br />
