insite 04/12 A decisive factor for ensuring that monuments are recognisable from a distance is the luminance contrast with respect to the surroundings. In a rural context with a low ambient illumination, low illuminance levels are sufficient for accentuating a building or edifice, but a brighter urban environment will require a correspondingly brighter accentuation to achieve a comparable contrast effect. A fractionally higher illuminance level will often suffice for giving significant buildings an intensive effect from a distance. However, as the edifice is approached, the focus shifts from the overall image to details such as basreliefs of inscriptions. Since the accentuation of these elements is not concerned with achieving an effect from a distance, it can manage with considerably lower illuminance levels. A brightness level that is too intensive would dazzle an observer and be perceived as unpleasant. The possibilities for lighting design for monuments range from subtle, uniform illumination (e.g. so that they can be appreciated in town squares at night) to expressive, temporary lighting concepts for celebratory occasions.
