The Season of Lent
As we begin the journey towards Easter, let us remember the lessons that Jesus
taught us as he faced the great sacrifice he was to make.
Lent is a time to learn to travel light, to clear the clutter from our crowded lives and
find a space, our own desert – deserted, bleak and unforgiving, often with few
creature comforts, only a vast stillness –sharpening our awareness of ourselves and
God in our lives.
Ash Wednesday Liturgy: Last Wednesday the entire College community participated in a
liturgy signifying Ash Wednesday as the beginning of LENT. This “Ashes” liturgy was
replicated in each Pastoral Class when all members of the community received their ‘ashes’
as a mark of remembrance in preparation for the Easter event. The liturgy challenged each
one of us to pray, fast and give to the poor during this time of Lent. I thank the students
and the staff for their participation and reverence during this reflective time. My hope and
prayer is that we take time to reflect on our relationships: those with our God, family and
friends, and renew our understanding and confidence with each other. LENT truly is a time
of REFLECTION, RECONCILIATION and RENEWAL.
HSC & SC Achievement and DUX Assembly: I have already highlighted some of the
outstanding HSC achievements of 2011 in previous newsletters. These were generally
whole school achievements. Yesterday, we took the wonderful opportunity of recognising
the outstanding individual achievements of the class of 2011. We formally recognised and
celebrated each of the student’s achievements at the Annual DUX Assembly.
Congratulations to all students for their hard work and effort. Special mention and
congratulations goes to Andrew Travers, our 2011 HSC Dux and Emer Sheridan, the 2011
School Certificate Dux. We at the College are very proud of your achievements as we are
of all the award recipients. The 2011 College Leaders were also recognised for their
commitment and service to the College. The ceremony was punctuated by two
outstanding musical interludes performed by Zac Leishman and Jessica Laubscher. There
were also several inspirational speeches delivered, none more so than that from the
DUX, Andrew Travers, and the Occasional Address from Mr Michael
Addicoat – Secondary Consultant of the CEO Southern Region.
Congratulations to all.
Yr 12 HSC Information Evening: Last Tuesday night Yr 12 students and
their parents were provided with a detailed overview of the requirements
and expectations of the HSC. We had the opportunity to recognise the
great results of previous years and we threw out the challenge to Year 12 to
achieve to their potential. The presenters also provided an outline of
several new initiatives that the College is providing to support the students
in their final year. We obviously wish them the best in 2012.
Students finish 2.20pm
From the Assistant Principal … Mr Michael Donnelly
Throughout the year there will be times when families need to communicate with
the school regarding different situations or concerns. As a general rule most
correspondence would be in written form. The following is an outline of who to
contact.
Notes and Communication
Students are required to present notes to explain various absences and other
matters. Notes should be directed in the following manner:
* Required, since these notes are filed with the Roll
Unclaimed clothes will be disposed of at the end of term.
Any fees and monies must be placed in an envelope with the student’s
name and Pastoral Class clearly marked on the outside. Reminder that
fees can be paid electronically and in instalments. Any queries
regarding fees need to be directed to Mr McDonall the business
Manager.
When students are late or leave early, they must sign in or out using
their ID card.
If there are concerns regarding homework, assignments or issues specific to
a subject, then the class teacher or KLA Coordinator is the best person to
contact.
Issues that are broader behavioural matters, as well as family information
updates or concerns, then the Year Coordinator is the best point of call.
Issues to do with patterns of study or broader curriculum issues are best dealt
with by Ms Gant, the Learning and Curriculum Coordinator.
Issues to do with technology can be directed to Mr Kennedy.
Ash Wednesday Liturgy
On Wednesday, all Pastoral classes took part in an Ash Wednesday Liturgy, to signify the beginning of
Lent – a season of prayer, fasting and giving. Students and staff were provided with the opportunity to
re-examine their relationships with others and with God, and think about how we can all make personal
sacrifices and be more for others.
The liturgy encouraged everyone to embrace Caritas’ theme for 2012 – “If You Want Peace Work for
Justice” and helped each of us to reflect on how we as a College community can work together for
justice.
During the liturgy, ashes were placed in the form of a cross on the forehead of each person. The words
“Turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel” were uttered as the ashes were distributed, to
remind us that we all need to reconcile with God and listen to His word, especially during the season of
Lent.
I would like to thank Miss Maria Bautista, Assistant REC, for her work in putting the liturgy together
successfully. It was a pleasant experience for all.
Over the coming weeks, we will be reflecting on the season of Lent and exploring how we can all work
for justice in order to achieve peace.
Project Compassion Appeal 2012
This week, all Pastoral classes received a Project Compassion box which will
be used to collect donations during the season of Lent. Each week, we will
publish a tally of how much we have raised as a community. Each individual is
encouraged to bring in a small donation, however much you can, to help
support Caritas with their appeal this year.
To provide a little incentive, the winning Pastoral class will receive a prize and
points will be awarded to their house. Similarly, the winning House will also
receive points towards their final score.
Best of luck to all Pastoral classes and remember, it is not just about winning
points for your House, but about helping those in the world who are being
treated unfairly or who don’t have the comforts that we have today. Give
from the heart and be proud of the help you are providing.
Year 12 Gets Involved in the Fashion Industry
Claire Lucas, Year 12
A group of 10 students from Year 12 had a wonderful time on 14 th to 16 th February, working as model dressers at
David Jones Autumn/Winter Fashion
Launch. The gorgeous models and
designer collections were amazing.
Back stage we were lucky enough to be
part of all the action and preparation that
goes on behind the scenes. Working
alongside internationally acclaimed stylist
Kelvin Harries, and teamed up with
wonderful friends from Bosco, we all
worked to get the models ready and
perfect backstage in just enough time to
make their next runway entrance.
Amazingly I was teamed up with model
Montana Cox, the winner of Australia’s
Next Top Model but squeezing the
models’ feet into shoes sizes too small for
them was challenging, with them having
to grin and bear it through the pain. Many
bandaids were needed for the blisters
that appeared.
Meeting wonderful models, Ambassador Samantha Harris and Guest Ambassador Montana Cox, and many of the
other internationally known models were some of the highlights for me. It was hard to miss whenever Miranda
Kerr entered the building. Everyone stopped to stare and all you could hear was “awww” when she brought her
adorable baby Flynn in.
Valentine’s Day at Bosco
Lachlan Waugh & Mitchell McGrath, Year 12
“Love was in the air
With no roses to spare
And serenades around
Oh such a beautiful sound.”
Bosco College celebrated
Valentine’s day with love and
romance as Year 12 sold roses
and balloons and sang sweet
serenades to students and
staff alike.
Thank you to everyone for helping spread the love and making 14 th February
especially special for that sweet someone in your life. All proceeds went towards
Year 12 fundraising, so your romantic gestures are even more greatly appreciated.
Year 7 History
Mrs Christine Harding
HSIE Coordinator
The topic Year 7 students are currently
studying is “Investigating History”.
Within this topic students have
examined a variety of sources and skills
that are used by historians.
Sarah Doyle
As part of the topic we learn about
anachronisms. An anachronism is an
object, custom or event that is out of
place for their period of time. Try to find
the anachronism in the following two
As with most rules for spelling in
the English language, there are
exceptions to the suffix rule
outlined in last week’s
newsletter. This week’s spelling
tip looks at two words that are
often misspelt.
The rule
SPELLING TIP
Keep the ‘e’ when adding a suffix starting with a consonant.
amaze+ment = amazement
feature+less = featureless
The exceptions
SPELLING TIP
The words ‘true’ and ‘argue’ end in ‘e’ but are preceded by the vowel ‘u’. For these words,
when adding a suffix beginning with a consonant, drop the ‘e’.
true + ly= truly
argue + ment= argument
Taya Achieves Success at
DesignTECH, 2011
Above: Taya with her Mum and Dad and the Dean of
the Faculty of the Built Environment
It was with great pleasure that Mr Carlton and I
attended the launch of DesignTech at the Powerhouse
Museum in recognition of Taya Brooks and her Major
Design and Technology project ‘The Shangri-La’. Taya
was one of 20 students who were selected from across
the state to exhibit at the Powerhouse this year.
During the presentation Taya was awarded the UNSW
Built Environment Award for sustainability in design. The
Dean of the Faculty of the Built Environment at UNSW
praised Taya on the quality and innovative nature of her
work, comparing her skills as equivalent to current
2 nd and 3 rd year University students.
Taya designed and produced a model of a
sustainable beach house which used energyefficient
building materials and optimised natural
light. The concept was designed for the project
home industry, so operational and cost efficiency
were important.
I would like to personally congratulate Taya on her
well deserved achievements and I wish her every
success for the future.
