Take advantage of the enhanced blackleg breeding trait for DEKALB canola. 

Developed through Monsanto’s breeding program, this enhanced blackleg 

resistant breeding trait provides multi-genic resistance. Available in the high 

yielding canola hybrid 74-44 BL, this disease package has multiple resistance 

genes from more than one source to protect canola against a range of blackleg 

races common in western Canada. 

Look for this symbol as your assurance of multi-genic blackleg resistance. 

CANOLA 

Strengthen your defense plan with the clubroot resistant breeding trait. 

The DEKALB brand’s clubroot resistant breeding trait provides exceptional 

resistance to the most common current clubroot pathotypes including 3, 2, 5, 6 

and 8. This defense package is available from DEKALB in 74-54 RR – the newest 

high yielding DEKALB canola hybrid. 

Look for this symbol as your assurance of multiple pathotype clubroot resistance. 

Shatter Tolerance – Monsanto is continually working on improved shatter tolerance 

through breeding selection and innovation. Growers looking for a DEKALB hybrid that 

offers reduced pod shatter should look at 74-44 BL, 73-15 RR and 73-75 RR. Within the 

DEKALB lineup, these hybrids inherently provide the most reduction in pod shatter.

CANOLA 


FACTS ON CANOLA SEED COAT COLOUR 

Harvested canola can range in seed coat colour from dark black to 

light brown and can even display a mottled appearance. 

Seed colour is a function of genetics, 

environmental conditions, and seed 

maturity at swathing. Swathing at 60% 

seed colour change will result in a darker 

seed coat colour versus cutting earlier. 

Some DEKALB hybrids have a lighter seed 

coat colour due to the higher oil content of 

the seed. Remember that seed coat colour 

is not an indicator of greenseed levels in the 

sample. The only way to assess greenseed 

is to roll out the sample.

SWATHING TIPS FROM 

YOUR DEKALB AGRONOMIST 

Heading into swathing, wait for 60% Seed Colour Change (SCC) as this can result 

in better and higher quality seed, heavier bushel weights, and higher yields. This 

corresponds with the same recommendations made by the Canola Council of Canada. 

Assess SCC in several areas of your DEKALB canola field before swathing, and be sure 

to look at seed colour, not canopy or pod colour when making swathing decisions. 

When possible, avoid swathing in hot, dry and windy weather as this can lead to 

rapid dry down of the crop. Approximately 20% seed moisture is required for the 

enzyme that clears chlorophyll to be active, so it is critical to give this enzyme 

sufficient time to work.

FIELD SCALE TRIALS, TESTED FOR YOU, BY YOU. 

The support and expertise provided 

by the DEKALB Agronomic Team 

through our Market Development 

Trial program gives you access to 

farmer managed research trials 

that test DEKALB brand canola 

seed against key competitors. 

The goal of these trials is to ensure our 

DEKALB brand canola seed has been 

extensively tested across Western Canada 

by leading farmers, exposing our genetics 

to a wide range of environmental and soil 

conditions, which results in a robust dataset 

for making decisions for your farm. 

In 2014 we are conducting over 175 Market 

Development Trials across Western Canada, 

generating over 2400 unique comparisons of 

DEKALB canola hybrids versus key competitor 

hybrids. Having more trials means our 

expanded DEKALB Agronomic Team 

can now provide even greater insight into 

hybrid performance on a geographically 

relevant scale.

program, our Technology Development Team 

is running 20 FACT Advancement Trials 

across Western Canada in collaboration with 

farmers to test our newest germplasm.
