BREAST SCREENING
RE-ACCREDITED
The Pennine Breast Screening service
has maintained its internationally
accredited quality standard. The
Quality Management System (QMS) is
how the service monitors, reviews and
improves the quality of service delivery
against the internationally accredited
quality standard called ISO 9001:2000.
All members of the screening team are
responsible for maintaining the quality of
service delivery by participating in internal
and external audits, adhering to documented
working practices and protocols and
taking responsibility for keeping the quality
management documentation up-to-date.
CHAIRMAN RE-APPOINTED
Chairman, David Richardson, has
been reappointed for another threeyear
term by the Board of Governors
- the term runs from June 2008.
Other changes agreed by the Board of
Governors include John Waterhouse’s
appointment as a non-executive director - to
replace Balbir Singh. John now stands down
as elected governor for Bradford North.
As laid-down in the constitution, the next
highest polling candidate from the Bradford
North Constituency, Mohammad Yaqoob,
will take over John’s term of office.
Richard Bell and Chris Jelly, both nonexecutive
directors have been reappointed
for a further three years, following the end
of their current terms of offices, approved
by Board of Governors.
Rifat Ali, governor for Bradford West has
resigned. A by-election will be held within
THAT’LL DO NICE-LY!
The foundation trust - along with
Bradford and Airedale Teaching
Primary Care Trust - has won a
National Institute of Clinical Excellence
(NICE) shared learning award.
The award is for the abnormal uterine
bleeding service, which is the only such
service in the country based in a primary
care setting. The service performs
endometrial ablation - this is a technique
that can help prevent hysterectomies.
Other providers of this technique tend to
treat patients in hospital, under general
anaesthetic. Carrying it out in primary
care means it can be done as day surgery,
under local anaesthetic - meaning
patients do not have to stay in hospital
and can return to normal life much faster.
The service is run by Sian Jones,
consultant obstetrician and
gynaecologist, Helen Ludkin, nurse
hysteroscopist and Dr Anne Connolly, a
GP with special interests.
Sian said: “We are thrilled to win this
award and it really highlights the success
of the service. Carrying out procedures
in primary care offers women an easier
recovery. The technique itself is very
THe Bradford Clinical Research
Facility (CRF) was officially opened
on February 19 by Professor Mark
Cleary, vice chancellor of the University
of Bradford.
The building is located next to Temple
Bank House and is a high-quality research
facility that will provide the first dedicated
unit for undertaking clinical research trials
in Bradford.
successful and has really changed people’s
lives - without the symptoms of abnormally
heavy periods, patients are now able to
arrange holidays or start new jobs.”
The service is based at Westwood
Diagnostic and Treatment Centre.
BRADFORD CLINICAL RESEARCH
FACILITY OPENS
John Wright, director of the Bradford
Institute for Health Research, said:
“Patients in Bradford will have access to
modern and safe facilities to take part in
the trials of the latest drugs for tackling
disease. Clinical researchers will have a
state-of-the-art facility for undertaking
high-quality research.
“The opening of the facility demonstrates
research profile and activity to not only
fulfil its role as a teaching hospital but
in recognising the beneficial impact that
the Bradford Institute for Health Research.
The completion and opening of the
CRF is part of a £2million investment in
research infrastructure by the foundation
trust.
An open event was also held for staff on
the day of the opening and gave them
the opportunity to look round both the
CRF and the restored Temple Bank House.
FOUNDATION TRUST
GETS FUNDING
The foundation trust has become
a key member of the White Rose
Health Innovation Partnership
(WRHIP) and secured funding for new
clinical devices.
The WRHIP is a regional project, which
aims to accelerate innovation in healthcare.
WRHIP aims to speed up the delivery of
breakthrough technologies to the NHS.
WRHIP held a series of five open
innovation workshops that gave the
opportunity for both clinical needs
and novel technological solutions to
be discussed. Tom Taggart, consultant
orthopaedic surgeon and Helena Miles,
clinical nurse specialist, orthopaedics gave
talks at the orthopaedics workshop.
At the woundcare workshop Professor
Peter Vowden, consultant vascular
surgeon and Kath Vowden, consultant
nurse, wound care, gave an insight into
the clinical and nursing perspectives of
wound care.
To support the new multi-disciplinary
collaborations that were formed at the
workshops, a one million pound fund
was made available.
Professor Vowden will be working with
colleagues at the University of Bradford
and in industry to develop a novel wound
diagnostic device and wound healing
therapy.
In collaboration with the University
of Bradford, Helena Miles and Chris
Wardman, matron orthopaedics, have
received funding to develop a novel
orthopaedic rehabilitation device.
Professor Peter Vowden, Professor Peter
O’Donovan, consultant gynaecologist
and Dagmar Waiblinger, research midwife
have also been successful and will work
close with their University and industry
partners to ensure that the clinical
requirements are met.
Angela Grange, lead nurse research and
development, said: “The foundation trust
has had exceptional success in receiving
funding so that several innovative ideas
will now be made a reality. Having close
links with both universities and industrial
partners will enable novel technologies to
be developed to meet real clinical needs -
something that will only benefit patients.”
NEW BUS SERVICE TO BRI
Anew trial bus service to BRI has
been launched. The service will
run from Shipley, via Heaton, to
the hospital. The service will depart hourly
throughout the day between Monday and
Saturday, with the last service departing
from the BRI after 4.00pm.
The new route will be a boost for patients
and staff living in the Shipley area as they
will no longer have to change buses in
the city centre. The bus will take around
35 minutes in total from Shipley to BRI.
Regular buses routes, 617, 618, 680 and
620 will continue to run from the BRI.
MORE ABOUT
CHILDREN’S THERAPY
Several children’s therapy
groups are helping patients
at St Luke’s. The groups - run
jointly between physiotherapy and
occupational therapy -are aimed
at children with co-ordination
difficulties. There are three groups
- life skills, bike riding and Pilates
and core stability.
The life skills group runs daily
for a week during school
holidays to provide an intense
period of training for children
who struggle with everyday
activities such as using cutlery
and preparing snacks. There is
a party on the last day, which
the children work towards by
making decorations and food.
The bike riding group runs for
four days during school holidays
for an hour. The group breaks
down the task of riding a bike
for children of over six-yearsold
who have co-ordination
difficulties and can’t achieve
this independently. So far, 14
children have been through
the programme and all have
achieved independent riding by day four.
The core stability group is a six-week
course where children attend once a
week to improve their posture and
balance. Mostly, the children attending
this group have hypermobility in their
joints and co-ordination problems.
Kathryn Robinson, physiotherapist,
said: “The groups are brilliant ways for
children to build their confidence and
help improve co-ordination. Learning to
FOUNDATION TRUST
LEADS THE WAY
AAll hospitals in England were set
the target of deep cleaning by
the Government in September
2007, with ward-by-ward cleans due to
be completed by the end of March 2008.
The foundation trust has had deep clean
teams in place since September 2006.
The foundation trust is leading the way
when it comes to deep cleaning. Several
trusts – including one from the Isle
of Wight visited our cleaning services
department in November 2007 to gain
knowledge of how these cleans can be
carried out while patients are on the wards.
The cleaning services department plays a
vital role in the reduction of Healthcare
Associated Infections (HCAIs). The two
teams are made up of 12 members
of staff who concentrate on the deep
cleaning programme and terminal cleans.
Rita Oddy, cleaning services manager, said:
“We are very proud of the work we have
done around deep cleans and terminal
cleans and have really led the way, we
continue to look at innovative ways in
which to improve hospital cleanliness,
which includes the implementation of an
automated equipment washing machine
in the future.”
The deep clean team provides a
programmed intensive clean to clinical
areas on a rotational basis and the
frequency is governed by category of risk.
This covers both BRI and St Luke’s.
Before planned cleans, wards are preassessed
by the team’s supervisor Mary
Lawton and a member of the nursing
team to determine if the team will
encounter any problems, such as clutter
or rooms that may not be accessible on
the day. This provides an opportunity for
wards to de-clutter and arrangements are
made with portering services to remove
unused and unwanted/condemned items
prior to the clean taking place. A deep
clean involves a curtain change and a
thorough clean of patient areas such as
lockers, bedside tables and chairs.
Also part of the team’s duties is to
provide extra cleaning during infection
outbreaks. At the end of November all
wards had a deep clean and those areas
categorised as high risk areas will have
had several deep cleans over a period of
months.
The terminal clean team ensures that as
patients are discharged, bed areas are
thoroughly cleaned and ready for the
next patient without causing delay. The
terminal clean service works 24-hours
a day, seven days a week, supporting
the efficient flow of patients through
our hospitals without cleaning services
causing any unnecessary delays.
Former patient Howard Jackson has raised
over £2,300 for cancer charities and
the uro-oncology service on ward 14, by
walking the route of the Leeds-Liverpool
canal - a whopping 127-mile walk.
Howard started the walk just weeks after
having surgery and completed it in stages.
We are sending a message,
Just to say we are giving all our love to Tiny
on this day,
The wounds cut deep,
For Tiny we loved so much in our own
special way,
All the things we want to say we’ve said
them all before,
Well just to say we love you Tiny,
We miss you each day just more and more.
We don’t ask for miracles,
But today just one would do,
To see our Tiny walk in the post room,
The way he used to do,
There isn’t a day that will go past,
As we all miss a good member of our staff.
this had risen to over 90 per cent. One of
the elements of the bundle of care is the
formal daily interruption of sedation of
patients, which can reduce the duration
that patients require ventilation.
Again, audits on the unit have shown
that patients are requiring ventilation
for shorter periods of time and this is
demonstrated in a fall in the average
length of stay on a ventilator from 11
days in January 2007 to six days in
November 2007.
General Wards
The foundation trust has recently
introduced monthly Modified Early
Warning System (MEWS) audits in several
pilot wards. These audits measure how
well wards are monitoring the clinical
observations of patients and to date
the results have shown an average
compliance of 85 per cent.
Furthermore, an audit showed similar
levels of compliance across the
foundation trust. The high level of
compliance with MEWS is associated
with increased calls to the critical
care outreach team, which have risen
from 33 calls in January 2007 to 39 in
October. As more patients are receiving
early intervention from the critical care
outreach team, we are seeing a reduction
in the crash call rate, which has fallen
from five per thousand discharges in
February 2007 to 2.3 in November.
Medicines Management
The last issue of Trust Today stated that
recent reviews of anticoagulant drug
events on the pilot site of ward three has
revealed an adverse event rate of only 16
per cent in September 2007 - this is the
number of adverse events per thousand
doses of anticoagulant medication
dispensed by staff. This should have read
that the adverse event rate is 16 per
thousand doses.
SECURITY UPDATE
During 2007, the level of police
recorded crime at the foundation
trust has been higher than in
the previous few years. However, the
months of September and November saw
significantly lower crime than the rest of
the year.
Karon Snape, local security management
specialist, said: “The drop during
September and November seems to
be due to the higher profile of security
during those months.
“In September, West Yorkshire Police carried
out a day of high visibility
patrols and gave crime reduction advice
at the foundation trust. There was also
significant publicity with regard to a number
plate security screw replacement day.
T
WHAT THE PAPERS SAY
he foundation trust has received
a lot of media interest over recent
weeks.
Here’s a round-up of some of the interest
we’ve had:
There has been widespread coverage of
diarrhoea and vomiting outbreaks for
“In November there was the NHS Security
awareness month with a contribution
from West Yorkshire Police with a crime
reduction display stand and a replacement
number plate security screw day.
“When the profile of security is higher
amongst staff, patients and visitors, crime
significantly falls.”
Karon added: “Therefore the challenge is
that as staff, if we all play a major role in
raising the profile of security within our
specific areas, wards and departments
and if we take security seriously and
become more proactive, then we can
significantly reduce the number of
security breaches.”
FOUNDATION
TRUST TAKES
PART IN NHS
CAREERS EVENT
The foundation trust was part of a
group of local NHS organisations
who held a joint event with
Jobcentre Plus, bringing together careers
tutors, community organisations and
training providers to learn more about
job opportunities the NHS has to offer.
Around 30 local organisations were
invited to take part in the event held on
January 16.
Attendees were able to find out about
the structure of the NHS in Bradford,
how to get the experience to apply for
jobs, the NHS Jobs website and how to
complete application forms.
Ruth Haigh, recruitment and retention
manager, said: “The event was a great
success. It was a chance for people
to learn more about employment
opportunities in the NHS and should lead
to better opportunities for local people to
join the NHS in the future.”
Organisations involved in running the
event include Bradford Teaching Hospitals
NHS Foundation Trust, Bradford District
Care Trust, Bradford and Airedale
Teaching Primary Care Trust, Yorkshire
FOUNDATION TRUST LEADS
MULTI-CENTRE TRIAL
The foundation trust is taking the
lead for a large multi-centre head
and neck cancer trial. It will be the
first head and neck cancer multi-centre
trial in Bradford.
Led by Jim McCaul, consultant
maxillofacial and head and neck surgeon,
the trail will run across Yorkshire, in the
Midlands and in Scotland.
EAR TRUST AND
DAISY APPEAL UPDATE
Both the Listening for Life appeal and
the Daisy Appeal are progressing
well - with both enjoying visits by
the Lord Mayor.
A sod-cutting ceremony took place at
BRI in January signifying the start of
a building programme, which will see
the construction of the country’s first
dedicated cochlear implant centre.
The Listening for Life Centre, which will
house the Yorkshire Cochlear Implant
Service, was cut by the Lord Mayor,
Councillor Robin Owens. The centre will be
built on land by the Elizabeth Foundation.
Just days before, the Lord Mayor at
BRI was at BRI for another sod-cutting
ceremony - this time the start of building
work for the new Bradford Cancer
Support Centre. This involves the
Jim is lead clinician for research and clinical
trials for head and neck cancer. Jim has
carried out many research studies in the past,
including work on facial gunshot trauma,
maxillofacial surgery, facial plastic surgery and
head and neck cancer. This includes telomere
biology and the effects of physiotherapy for
shoulder dysfunction after neck surgery in
patients with head and neck cancer.
refurbishment of The Farm, which will
be extended. It will provide a home for
Bradford Cancer Support services for
patients and their families.
Both centres still need more donations
and are being supported by the Lord
Mayor’s appeal.
To support the Ear Trust got to www.ycis.
org.uk for news about the appeal. The
T&A are supporting the campaign - go
His main research focus recently has been
new cancer therapies which target cancer
cells and do not damage normal tissues. This
work aims to produce cancer treatment,
which is more effective with far fewer side
effects. Part of his PhD thesis in telomere
molecular oncology won the European Head
and Neck Society Golden Award
Jim said: “Running the first head and neck
cancer multi-centre trial to be based here
at Bradford is extremely exciting and a real
boost for research at the foundation trust.
“Research into improving care and
outcomes for my patients has always been
a core part of my medical career. We are
working now in the head and neck team
on new ways of making our operations to
remove cancer more accurate. This should,
we hope, improve the cure rate for patients
with head and neck cancer treated in
Bradford.”
Jim added: “Our emphasis is the team
approach to improving outcomes for our
patients with research as a central part of
our efforts.”
ANNETTE FOX DAY
CARE UNIT OPENS
The refurbished Annette Fox day
care unit has been opened by the
Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire,
Dr Ingrid Roscoe.
The new facilities include new treatment
rooms, a waiting room, a counselling
room, sluice room and a kitchen. New,
comfy chairs have been purchased
and a bed added for patients who are
particularly ill.
The whole refurbishment was funded
by the Annette Fox Leukaemia
Research Fund, which celebrates its
25 th anniversary this year. More than
£2 million has been raised by the fund,
with the latest refurbishment costing
£165,000.
A new fridge to store blood has also been
donated by the Bingley Airedale Rotary
Club, which has made the Annette Fox
Fund their charity of the year.
Patients were full of praise for the unit.
One patient, Nicky, who is undergoing
chemotherapy said: “The treatment in
here is fabulous. The nurses are fantastic
- as soon as you walk through the door
you are treated like a person, not just
a patient.”
Irene and Colin Fox, who set up the fund,
in memory of their daughter, attended
the event, along with Miles Scott, chief
executive, members of staff, chairman of
the fund, Alan Griffin and some patients.
Dr Parapia, consultant haematologist,
said: “The new unit means so much
to both staff and patients. We are very
grateful to everybody who has donated
money to the fund over the years
BUPA AWARD
Gerry Armitage, senior research fellow,
has been highly commended for
the drug error reporting scheme,
coming runner-up to the winner of the BUPA
Foundation’s National Research Award for
Patient Safety 2007.
The scheme was designed from a large
research project that Gerry carried out in
the foundation trust from 2004 to 2006 -
which analysed over 1,000 incident reports
and interviewed over 40 staff.
The scheme is designed to improve the
quality of report data through the use of
structured cues and free text to promote
learning at the point of reporting and
provide the organisation with more useful
information.
Several
departments
now run the
scheme and it
is being piloted
in several other
organisations.
