SWISS EMMENTALER WINS WORLD CHAMPION CHEESE TITLE

MADISON, Wis. (March 23, 2006) -- What’s the very best cheese in the world

According to an international panel of expert judges at the 2006 World Championship

Cheese Contest, concluded here today, it’s Emmentaler Switzerland Premier

Cru made by Christian Wüthrich, Rüderswil, Switzerland for von Mühlenen Ltd.

in Dudingen, Switzerland. The 19 judges sniffed and tasted their way through

a record-breaking 1,795 cheese and butter entries from 19 countries during the

three-day competition. Out of 100 possible points, the Emmentaler scored 98.271

in the final round of judging, during which the judges re-evaluated all gold-winning

cheeses to determine the ultimate champion.

First runner-up in the contest, with a score of 98.05, is Parrano, a Gouda-style

cheese made by Rene Rovers with Uniekaas Nederland in Kaatsheuvel, Netherlands;

second-runner up is a young Gouda spiced with cumin, also from the Netherlands,

made by H. Rijkee with Friesland Foods which scored 97.973.

“With an international panel of 19 judges and entries from every corner of the

globe, these winning cheesemakers and buttermakers can truly claim to be best in

the world,” said John Umhoefer, executive director of the Wisconsin Cheese Makers

Association (WCMA), which hosts the biennial competition.

Overall, U.S. cheesemakers dominated the competition, earning gold medals in

27 of the total 47 cheese categories judged. The U.S. also took gold in both butter

classes and in the retail packaging class. Netherlands came in second among the

countries, with six golds; Canada had five. Other countries winning gold medals

were Austria, Australia, Denmark, Italy, Spain and Switzerland.

Among U.S. states, Wisconsin dominated with 17 gold medals. Idaho took three

gold medals, Vermont and New York each took two, and New Jersey, New Hampshire

and Ohio each took one gold medal.

The World Championship Cheese Contest is the largest international cheese and
