A Message from the President of the
John Tyler Community College Foundation Board
Net assets at end of year (2012): $5,982,069
John Tyler Community College (JTCC) is ever so grateful for growing community support.
Faithful supporters, as well as new donors, dug deep to back the College in its successful
efforts to provide quality educational opportunities that inspire student success and community
vitality. The JTCC Foundation Board joins me in thanking you for your ongoing investment
in the College and for appreciating the important role John Tyler plays in the community’s
economic and educational good health. Please note that one dollar given to JTCC translates
into a $16 return to the community. Let’s hear it for return on investment!
While we all understand it makes good sense to invest in your own backyard, we also get the
fact that JTCC’s affordable tuition is the best educational value on the higher ed market –
approximately one third the price of the Commonwealth’s public, four-year sister institutions.
JTCC’s online courses and flexible class hours (friendly to working students) can’t be
beat. While high school graduates are our fastest-growing cohort, the College is masterful
at retooling and retraining citizens in the workforce to expand their skill sets and grow job
opportunities. Along with providing academic benefits to our immense service area, let’s take
a look at the successes your investment inspired in 2012:
• Full Moon Madness, the Foundation’s fun-filled annual fundraising event, boasted the largest special event net profit in the history of the Virginia
Community College System. Devoted corporate sponsors helped us clear $75,443 for student needs. With Chesterfield County as its partner, the
Foundation fostered good community health and lots of exciting activities for all ages.
• The Foundation’s scholarship program enjoyed a banner year, awarding $171,785 scholarship dollars to a record 111 deserving students – most of
whom could not have attended college without financial help. Corporations, foundations and individuals gave generous scholarship support and
raised the dollars awarded from the previous year by 24%.
• The community rallied to successfully match a pledge from the Mary Morton Parsons Foundation – providing a total of $218,650 to renovate a
state-of-the-art biology lab for the Chester Campus.
• The College, yet again, served the largest number of dual enrollment students in the Commonwealth’s 23-member community college system. By
taking college-credit courses in high school, parents and students saved countless tuition dollars and shortened college graduation time.
• The College’s new engineering program showed its immediate impact by successfully transferring every graduate from its first class to four-year
engineering degree programs at either UVA, VT, or VCU, with several of the individuals involved already being sought for employment in the
College’s service area after their studies conclude.
• Manufacturing and business workforce training needs are front and center at John Tyler. By listening to our corporate friends and helping them
meet ever-changing hiring and training demands, our corporate ties remain strong as we continue to provide workforce training and educational
advancement for their employees. Indeed, the College is positioned to grow in a slow (but anticipated) 2013 economic upturn. And don’t forget,
through the Community College Workforce Alliance (CCWA), John Tyler serves an additional 20,000 non-credit students and over 1,000 companies.
Working together, the College and CCWA are a dynamic workforce training duo.
• Corporate and foundation support was significant in 2012. CJW Medical Center, an affiliate of HCA; Capital One; Altria; and Bank of America gave
generously, as did Parsons, Cameron, Jenkins, John Randolph, Metropolitan Health and Richmond Memorial Health Foundations. Investing in the
many programs John Tyler offers, our corporate and foundation friends kept the education wheels turning.
• Local city and county governing boards provided much-needed funds to make good things happen on campus. We thank our area government leaders
for understanding that educating our future leaders is critical to a community’s vibrancy.
• New giving and special recognition societies were launched to thank our generous supporters. Annual Fund Societies include: Tyler ($5000+);
Presidents ($1000+); Burgundy and Gold ($500+); Founders ($250+); and 1967 Society (up to $249). Giving in special ways is recognized through:
Deeds Not Words Circle (donors providing transformational support); Tried and True Club (three plus years of consecutive giving); and Legacy
League (planned gift supporters).
Again, the Foundation Board joins me in thanking all of you for your loyalty and support for JTCC in 2012. We ask that you please continue your
generous backing of John Tyler in 2013. A postage-paid envelope is enclosed to help make your investment in the College convenient. If you prefer to
give online, please visit www.jtcc.edu/giving.
Give yourself a hand for investing in the future good health of education in our community.
2012 Chancellor’s Award
for Leadership in Philanthropy
Ron Laux, a long-time employee of John Tyler Community College was honored
posthumously as a recipient of the 2012 Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in
Philanthropy. Laux had a distinguished career at John Tyler serving as coordinator,
director, dean, and vice president of workforce development. He was an Army veteran who
served in Vietnam and Korea and later worked for John Tyler in outreach services, helping
connect Ft. Lee military personnel, staff and their families to the services and programs
offered at the College. Laux also was a member of the Board of Directors of the John Tyler
Community College Foundation and the Chester Rotary Club.
“Ron Laux served John Tyler Community College with distinction from 1991 until his
retirement in 2011,” said Dr. Marshall W. Smith, president of John Tyler Community
College. “As a person who truly embraced the community college mission, he was always
alert for new and innovative ways to serve students, offer creative programming, and
support business and industry in the region. As a career Army officer, his services were
invaluable as a liaison between the College and Ft. Lee. Even his many civic endeavors
ultimately supported the institution. His tenure with the Chester Rotary Club served to supplement scholarships and promote Fool for
Art, among other activities. He was always willing to go the second mile, always concerned for his fellow man, and always concerned
with improving the communities in which he lived and worked. His loss was a loss for the entire College and his legacy to it will remain
profound.”
Scholarship Celebration Night
The Foundation’s annual Scholarship Celebration Night was held on August 15, 2012 at the Chester campus.
A record-breaking $171,785 in scholarships was awarded to 111 students. At Scholarship Celebration Night,
student recipients have the opportunity to meet with and thank the donors who give generously to support the
Foundation’s scholarship program.
Silvia Garcia Murcia
Silvia Garcia Murcia grew up in Honduras in a family that always talked about the importance of
getting an education. Her dream was to go to Cuba to study medicine. Three-and-a-half years ago
her life took a new direction when her father brought her to the United States. Although he was
deported, Silvia wanted to stay and was placed in the foster-care system. Once in Virginia, she
attended Meadowbrook High School and then John Tyler Community College. She is enrolled in
pre-nursing courses and is part of the Great Expectations Program which has provided her with
a variety of resources and support — assistance for which she is grateful. “I love this college.
Everybody here is wonderful. They are always there for me. My life changed totally when I
came here.” Garcia Murcia is working on pre-nursing courses so she can apply to Tyler’s Nursing
Program. She is still determined to become a physician, so after she earns her nursing degree and
gets some experience, she plans to start medical school. Her top choice Johns Hopkins.

Full Moon Madness
On October 6, 2012, John Tyler celebrated its third Full Moon Madness event on the Midlothian campus. Full Moon Madness promotes
a healthy community, as well as a safe and fun way to enjoy Halloween activities, all while raising funds to support John Tyler students.
Through sponsorships from generous members of the community and registration fees for the 5K race and 1-mile Moonwalk, the John
Tyler Foundation raised over $94,000. More than 2,000 people attended Full Moon Madness to partake in this event, which also included
a Silly Bus concert, a costume contest for kids and pets, a “Fun Zone” of action-oriented activities and the “Moonlight Clinic” with JTCC
nursing students onhand to provide health screenings.
With sharp angles juxtaposed against flowing lines, the artwork that won the 2013 John Tyler
Community College Art Award makes a dramatic statement. It is the first three-dimensional sculpture
to take the top prize in the Foundation Art Award contest. Alexander Huneke created the winning entry,
After Picasso, “Woman with Pears” (sans Pears), during his Fundamentals of Design ll class. “The goal
was to take a Cubist painting and interpret it as a 3-D sculpture – to make the two-dimensional threedimensional,”Huneke
said. This was Huneke’s first venture into three-dimensional work, and although it
was very successful, he says his passion is oil painting. An image of Huneke’s artwork will be featured
on the 2013 Foundation Art Award poster, which is used in friends-raising and fundraising efforts that
support the Foundation and the College.
Scholarship Need
While the John Tyler Community
College Foundation supports a
number of worthwhile initiatives
at the College, its most important
work centers around supporting
scholarships for students, both
through endowment funds and
through named scholarship funds.
Many of our students academically
qualify for scholarship assistance,
but many of those students are
unable to participate in federal
or state financial aid programs.
The Foundation scholarships thus
represent a chance for deserving
persons to change their lives for the
better through higher education. Yet
for each individual the Foundation
is able to help, others are turned
away because the dollars available
are insufficient for the total need.
Contributions to the Scholarship
Fund or the establishment of
named endowed scholarships
leave a lasting legacy of solid
and meaningful support for the
institution and, most importantly, its
deserving students. Please consider
helping with this important task.
Sincerely,
Dr. Marshall W. Smith
