TRUST
FUND

Lives transformed
through music
Wanda Gascho-White
Chair, Canadian Music
Therapy Trust Fund
Music therapy saved my life —
physically and spiritually. It all
started for me when I was in
kindergarten. I went from a wheelchair
to a walker to crutches and
learned how to walk because of
music therapy. I would not be who I
am without it.
These are the powerful words of Chin Injeti,
singer, musician, music producer and founding
member of the Juno award-winning group
Bass is Base.
What role has music played in your life For so
many of us, it has the power to evoke memories
long forgotten and express our dreams for
the future. It reflects our greatest joys and our
deepest sorrows. And, as in the case of Chin
Injeti and many other Canadians,
it can transform lives.
It is through the generous support of corporations,
musicians, music journalists, private
foundations and individuals that the Canadian
Music Therapy Trust Fund has been able to
make music therapy accessible to countless
individuals with diverse needs.
Listen to our stories and help us raise awareness
about music therapy across Canada.
Become a music therapy trust ambassador.
Together we can change lives for the better
with the power of music therapy.
Yours in partnership,
At the Canadian Music Therapy Trust Fund our
vision is to create better lives through the
transformative power of music therapy.

force for all of us
Everyone has felt the effects of
music on some level. It is one of
the most basic human means of
expression and communication.
For thousands of Canadians living with
physical, developmental or social-emotional
challenges, music may offer even more
profound benefits.
The Canadian Music Therapy Trust Fund is a
registered charity dedicated to improving the
lives of Canadians through the therapeutic use
of music. Since 1993, we have helped fund
more than 400 programs across Canada to help
bring the power of music to those in need. We
are in schools for children with developmental
difficulties, in centres for adults with brain
injuries and at hospices for terminally ill
patients. Music has a unique power to engage
and sustain the attention of its listeners. And in
the hands of a trained therapist, people can
accomplish a variety of therapeutic goals and
objectives without any previous musical
knowledge or skill.
It is through making and responding to music
that significant benefits arise.
As I look at the research being done
around the world now — building the
neuroscientific and physiologic foundation
for music therapy — I feel great
excitement. Music alleviating neurodegeneration,
brain damage, fibromyalgia,
hearing problems; music facilitating communication,
inducing sleep, etcetera. The
future indeed is bright for the role of
music in health and well-being.
Music therapy uses music to develop the
potential of each person. It is an internationally
established therapy, developed through
decades of evidence and research, and uses the
empowering effects of music to improve
physical and mental health and quality of life.
Music therapists are trained professionals who
use music to bring about positive changes for
their clients. Interventions may include vocal
and instrumental improvisation, singing and
instrument playing, song writing, music
listening, lyric analysis, music and imagery,
relaxation exercises and movement.
The Canadian Music Therapy Trust Fund helps
bring specialized music therapy programs to a
range of people across Canada:
THE BAND WAGON LEGACY PROJECT in
Vancouver, now in its second year, helps
patients create a permanent record of music
composed during their music therapy sessions
with innovative mobile recording units.
A PALLIATIVE CARE music therapy program in
Edmonton provides support and comfort to
patients who are living with life-limiting
illnesses and nearing the end of their lives.
ALZHEIMER’S AND DEMENTIA music therapy
programs in four Toronto long-term care
facilities help clients adjust to their surroundings
and reconnect with memories, experiences,
family and friends.
I chose to support the Canadian Music
Therapy Trust Fund because like the
trust fund, I believe in music's healing
and restorative power. And there's a
ton of evidence out there that proves
music can heal when medicine cannot.
TRUST AMBASSADOR T-SHIRT
It is only through the generous
support of our donors and
volunteers that we can help
people like six-year-old John
Saunders.
John has Autism Spectrum Disorder. “Anyone
who observes John during a music therapy
session is blown away by his communication
and participation,” says his mother, Lenore
Saunders. “It is one of the only times during his
day that he is that expressive. We are surprised
how well it complements the other therapies
we are doing. It helps so much with language
and sensory processing. Music therapy has
been a huge positive addition to our son's
therapy and we can’t imagine not having it in
our lives.”
Although recognition of its benefits grows,
music therapy is not covered by government
funding. The Canadian Music Therapy Trust
Fund provides vital funding to programs across
Canada — and it is all done through the
support and donations of caring Canadians. We
would not be able to provide our current
programs and develop future programs without
your help.
Every year we need to raise a minimum of
$250,000 so that we can achieve our mission:
To promote, develop and support music
therapy services and research in order to
restore, maintain and improve the mental,
physical and emotional health of Canadians.
Help us raise awareness about music therapy!
We invite you to join our band of supporters
who include musicians, radio hosts, as well as
executives from Warner Music Canada,
Universal, Sony and EMI Music.
Become a music therapy trust ambassador and
spread the word across Canada.
As music therapy trust ambassadors,
musicians have unique opportunities to
raise awareness and support our cause.
They often perform at benefit concerts or
donate a percentage of their ticket sales;
record public service announcements or
donate signed instruments.
We always welcome new musicians who
would like to get involved. Contact us at
I had the opportunity to see music
the connection forged by music between
The Band Wagon, a mobile recording
studio at BC Children's Hospital, is used
by patients to create permanent archives
of songs they compose in music therapy
sessions.
In 2010, cancer patient Megan McNeil
composed her original song, “The Will to
Survive,” as a way of helping children in
the hospital keep up their courage when
they felt all hope was lost. She performed
her song at the Music Therapy Ride in
Whistler with Raine Maida and Chantal
Kreviazuk. The Band Wagon 2, a smaller
more mobile unit, is now underway. It is a
collaborative effort funded by the Canadian
Music Therapy Trust Fund and the
Music Therapy Ride Committee.
The Music Therapy Ride is an annual motorcycle
charity ride designed to raise funds for communitybased
music therapy services in British Columbia.
Now celebrating its 10th Anniversary, the Music
Therapy Ride has raised over $350,000 as a result of
its Vancouver to Whistler run. Established by members
of the music industry, with representatives from
record labels, radio stations, booking agencies, talent
managers, concert promoters and recording artists,
the Music Therapy Ride has broadened its reach over
the years to all motorcycle enthusiasts.
Recipients of funds raised from the Motorcycle
Therapy Ride have included BC Children’s Hospital,
Canuck Place, BC Cancer Agency, Vancouver Oral
Centre for Deaf Children, Camp Moomba, Brookhaven
Extended Care Facility, George Pearson Centre, BC
Women’s Hospital, the Society for Disability Arts and
Culture and many more.

I have seen the impact that
music therapy has on people
who are often in the battle of
their lives. Music transcends
medicine; it transcends the
confusion and frustration
that patients can be experiencing
when suffering from
diseases; and it can bring joy,
inspiration and reprieve
unlike any other help out
there.
