WELCOME

Minneapolis

St. Paul

Minneapolis photo by jupiter images; sT. paul photo courtesy of explore minnesota tourism; mall of america sign courtesy of meet minneapolis

You’ve Arrived ...

As home to Mall of America, and

a close neighbor to Minneapolis

and St. Paul, Bloomington offers

visitors myriad possibilities.

About how distinct a capital city is from its

pioneering neighbor for one—in everything

from its regal architecture to its cool nightlife.

And, in turn, how urban and trendy Minneapolis

feels in everything from its niche neighborhoods

to its global attractions. Or, overall, how lush, green and

clean the Twin Cities are, with ample parks and lakeshore

found within city limits as easily as they are in the

far-reaching suburbs. Or, how progressive the area feels

with provocative museums, Tony Award-winning theater

and an authentic fusion of fine restaurants all competing

for attention, no matter what side of the river you choose

to explore.

It’s rare you’ll find a metropolitan area elsewhere with

two special cities so close together, offering up numerous

things to do. However, it’s even more rare you’ll find

three. Bloomington, a city as old as our state (officially

recognized, along with Minnesota, in 1858), is a true

partner to Minneapolis and St. Paul. Not only does it

house the largest shopping mall in the nation—no tax

on clothes or shoes!—but it also booms with business

headquarters like Best Buy and Dairy Queen, flourishes

with high-class restaurants and boasts mile upon square

mile of reserved park land. And if that wasn’t enough,

with the Hiawatha Light Rail line departing from Mall of

America and numerous bus routes, Bloomington makes

it that much easier for visitors to experience the superb

offerings of downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul as well.

Come discover all the possibilities available in Bloomington

and the Twin Cities. Whether traveling with the

family, the girlfriends, for romance or business, here

you’ll come to love three distinct, yet complementary,

destinations.

traveler. Visitors can benefit from free parking,

America ® and countless other amenities that

make each person’s stay memorable and

enjoyable. Plus, visitors can reap the rewards

and savings with The Big Ticket (see p. 18).

Perhaps it’s that we offer no sales tax on

shoes and apparel or that we’ve got the

biggest and first indoor malls, but there’s

no denying that the Twin Cities metro area

is where to shop. Step into Bloomington’s Mall of

America ® to find more than 520 stores for men,

women and children in one place. Or explore nearby

and check out Ikea’s enormous store across the

street or REI’s shopping and wall-climbing complex

down the freeway. Downtown Minneapolis’ Nicollet

Mall also offers an array of shopping options:

Try Gaviidae or City Center. For fashionistas, the

50th & France neighborhood and posh Galleria mall

in Edina or the shops on St. Paul’s Grand Avenue

won’t disappoint. Explore it all, and you’ll certainly

find something special to bring home.

Q+A

Sara Rogers

TREND SPECIALIST, MALL OF AMERICA

In Bloomington there is one woman with her

eyes on the fashion world, following every

upcoming trend she finds, and using her

knowledge to better dress the visitors to Mall

of America. Sara Rogers is Mall of America’s

trend specialist, scouting styles and information

that she shares with consumers. “I think

of my research as runway to real way,” says

Rogers. “In my role I’m able to keep my eyes

on the pulse of what’s happening now [in the fashion industry] as well as what’s

in store.” Between growing up in the Twin Cities and working at the mall for

10 years, Rogers has seen and experienced a lot of what Mall of America, and

Bloomington, has to offer.

With more than 520 stores located within Mall of America, everyone is bound

to find a store they will want to visit more than once. Rogers recommends QVC @

The Mall to first-time visitors. Shop

through their wide range of goods,

as seen on TV, and take them home

with you that day. For apparel Rogers

says first-time visitors should check

“I think of my research

as runway to real way.”

out Club Monaco, her favorite store. “I love to see their new [merchandise]

and check out their sales. I’m a bargain shopper too.” Rogers also recommends

Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s for apparel.

What about the kids Rogers says visitors who are bringing daughters shopping

should check out the American Girl store. “It’s a magical place with products and

experiences that celebrate a girl being a girl,” says Rogers. For the curious boys

and girls in the family, she recommends Underwater Adventures, where everyone

can get face-to-face with all sorts of sea creatures. Even sharks! For another

kind of adventure with your family check out Nickelodeon Universe, particularly

the Naked Brother’s Crazy Cars. “I like driving bumper cars,” she says.

To those looking for the latest, greatest additions to the mall’s collection of

stores, Rogers suggests her favorite new attraction, MagiQuest. Designed with

the whole family in mind, this live-action video game gets players “up and moving,

and it’s something different,” she says. In terms of new restaurants, Rogers

says Crave is the one to check out. “You’ll love the food and ambiance, plus it’s

a great spot to sit back and relax while you recharge your batteries.”

One thing is certain when visiting Mall of America, says Rogers. Make sure you

are wearing a comfortable pair of shoes when you arrive. You are going to do a lot

of walking around the mall; don’t let your shoes make you drop while you shop.

Attracting Adventures

In just Bloomington alone, you’ll find more

fun than you ever dreamed. Inside Mall

of America ® , there are the more than 30

rides of Nickelodeon Universe ® , the

action of MagiQuest and the sharks of Underwater

Adventures ® Aquarium. Just across the

street, Water Park of America cools off and

excites, while down the road the beauty of

the wildlife refuge relaxes. More fun abounds

south of the cities at Valleyfair (which also

features a water park). And, between the

Minnesota Zoo and its acreage of animals

HYland ski & snowboard area, bloomington

and Como Zoo’s compound featuring a

kiddie amusement park, zoo and conservatory,

you’ll find plenty of other ways to play.

But don’t stop there. We encourage you to

cheer for our local teams—perhaps you’ll get

a good spot at the Twins’ new Target Field

baseball stadium for one of their first games

outside. And don’t forget to see as many of

the state’s 10,000-some lakes as you can—

many have great paths for walking, biking

and in-line skating. Get out, get smiling and

play around. There’s something for everyone.

Itinerary

A Day on the Line

MALL OF AMERICA ® TO DOWNTOWN

MINNEAPOLIS: READY, SET, GO!

The Hiawatha Light Rail line connects Bloomington to

downtown Minneapolis, stopping at shopping, dining

and entertainment destinations in between. Take a

ride and explore. See map on p. 62.

Morning

Begin your day at Bloomington’s Mall of America,

the southernmost stop on the light rail line. Grab a

cup of coffee and a muffin from Caribou Coffee, a

local chain. Then, explore the largest indoor mall in

the nation. Shop at Macy’s before taking a ride on

the Dora the Explorer-themed Ferris Wheel inside

Nickelodeon Universe, which offers a perfect view

of the seven-acre indoor amusement park.

Afternoon

After a delicious lunch at CRAVE, take the light rail

from Mall of America to the 50th Street/Minnehaha

Park Station and stroll around nearby Minnehaha

Falls. The 193-acre park features a 53-foot waterfall,

limestone bluffs and a life-size bronze sculpture of

Hiawatha and Minnehaha, characters from the Henry

Wadsworth Longfellow poem “Song of Hiawatha.”

Evening

Complete your day with a trip north into downtown

Minneapolis. Exit at the Warehouse District/

Hennepin Avenue Station to enjoy shopping on

Nicollet Mall or a show at the Orpheum Theatre on

Hennepin Avenue; dining options abound. Or, grab

a burger at Kieran’s Irish Pub in Block E (scheduled

to open in March) before a game at the new Twins

stadium (opening day April 12). After your busy day,

hop on the Light Rail at its northernmost stop, Target

Field, and head back to Bloomington.

Creativity on Display

You want museums We’ve got 57; that’s more than most other major

cities. Looking for performing arts groups and spaces The Twin Cities boasts

around 100 theater groups, 30 theater venues, 20 classical music groups and

10 dance companies. You’ll find history, art, science and children’s museums,

plus galleries such as the Bloomington Art Center, which features professional

work from regional artists. And that’s just the start. Performance groups range from

acclaimed regional theaters and large dinner theaters to beloved ballet companies and

classical music ensembles. Pair your adventures by enjoying next-door-neighbor destinations

such as the Mill City Museum and Guthrie Theater or Minneapolis Institute

of Arts and Children’s Theatre Company. Stroll through a gallery or take a theater seat

and we’ll entertain you no matter where you wander in the Twin Cities metro area.

Q+A

Tom Hoch

PRESIDENT AND CEO, HENNEPIN THEATRE TRUST

With a life centered in downtown Minneapolis,

Tom Hoch is president and CEO of the Hennepin

Theatre Trust, representing some of the Twin

Cities’ most famous theaters—the Orpheum,

Pantages and State theaters. As a leader in the

theater world, Hoch has his finger on the pulse of

entertainment in the Twin Cities and Bloomington.

But in his spare time he plays just as hard as the

performances his theaters host.

“The bicycle trails all over the metro area are phenomenal,” says Hoch. “I also

enjoy running around the lakes and [playing] any golf course.”

For more indoor entertainment, Hoch suggests visitors check out the Mill City

Museum and the Walker Art Center, saying each tells a wonderful story and

fuses history and art together

seamlessly.

But when it comes to shopping

at Mall of America, Hoch recommends

a special shop he thinks

about when he is with his granddaughters:

American Girl. Filled with old and new character dolls and featuring

a doll hair salon, deli and much more, this addition to the ground floor of Mall of

America ® has left quite an impression on kids and adults alike.

Hoch’s passion for the Twin Cities knows no limits. Visitors love Bloomington

and the Twin Cities, Hoch explains, because of “the arts and the extraordinary

opportunities we have in an increasingly diverse and interesting culture.”

Q+A

Eli Wollenzien

CRAVE RESTAURANT, MALL OF AMERICA

Tony Roma’s

Mall of America

346 South Avenue, Bloomington 55425

952-854-7940

As corporate executive chef for CRAVE

Restaurants, Eli Wollenzien oversees kitchen

operations for the fresh American-cuisine

trio of restaurants. CRAVE first opened in

Edina’s Galleria, then at Bloomington’s Mall of

America (where Wollenzien spends most of

his time). A third location recently opened in

the new Shops at West End in St. Louis Park.

Wollenzien recently moved to the southwestern

suburb of Minnetonka after living in St. Paul. He is a Wisconsin native.

“The Twin Cities area is so diverse in its culture, landscape, history and activities

that unique experiences are easy to find,” says Wollenzien. When he’s not

in the kitchen at CRAVE,

Wollenzien enjoys the

entertainment options at

Mall of America ® , such as

Nickelodeon Universe ® ,

the Nascar experience at

Silicon Motor Speedway

and just people watching.

“The Twin Cities area is so

diverse in its culture, landscape,

history and activities that unique

experiences are easy to find.”

His favorite store: Lego. “When Mall of America first opened, it was the most

exciting thing that could have been dreamed up. I still enjoy visiting with my

nephew and re-living the excitement,” he says.

Wollenzien lists the Minnesota History Center, Science Museum of

Minnesota (great for families) and Theatre in the Round as favorite cultural

attractions. As for music, he says, “The Cabooze in Minneapolis is the only place

I really go to watch music. It’s a place that anyone can feel comfortable.”

Other restaurants Wollenzien recommends include Indian Palace in Roseville,

Kinh-Do (Vietnamese) in Uptown Minneapolis and Shamrock’s Grill and Pub

(bar food) in St. Paul.

To view the beauty of the Twin Cities, Wollenzien heads to the Marjorie

McNeely Conservatory in St. Paul for its changing flower display or Minnehaha

Falls in Minneapolis. “It is a beautiful wooded area along the Mississippi River,

perfect for hiking, bringing the dog off leash and sitting on the beach. It’s easy to

forget you are in the middle of big city.”

What would he do with just one day in the Twin Cities to explore “Have

breakfast at Keys Café in the Foshay Tower in downtown Minneapolis. Visit the

Walker Art Center and sculpture gardens outside downtown Minneapolis. Take

the light rail to the Mall of America, and don’t forget to come visit Crave for an

unforgettable dinner.”
