Cosmeceuticals Demand - Skin Care
MARKET OVERVIEW
This information helps you:
• Determine what external factors
will impact future supply and
demand
• Measure your market and sales
potential based on supply and
demand forecasts.
Demand for skin care cosmeceuticals is expected to expand seven percent per
annum to $2.6 billion in 2005. The market penetration of private label brands
and the rapid transition of innovative value-added ingredients from premiumpriced
prestige SAMPLE brands to PAGE the shelves of mass merchandisers will intensify pricing
competition and moderate value gains. Demand will be driven, however, by
affluent and health-conscious middle-aged and elderly consumers who are willing to
spend the money necessary to buy products that stave off the aging process.
Other growth stimulants include increasing concerns about the deleterious effects
of overexposure to the rays of the sun.
Skin care cosmeceuticals encompass age-defying products, medicated lotions, sun
protection products, acne preparations and other miscellaneous skin care products.
Age-defying products will continue to account for the largest share of the skin care
cosmeceutical market and will record the fastest gains through 2005. This
segment of the industry was invigorated in the early 1990s by the introduction of
active ingredients, such as alpha hydroxy acid and retinol, which produced
demonstrable results, providing both health and appearance benefits, as opposed to
the traditional moisturizing products which preceded them. Age-defying products
include lotions, exfoliants, masks, cleansers, skin lighteners and other age-defying
INDUSTRY STRUCTURE
Private Company Characteristics -
Hair Care, Professional & Other Products
Private manufacturers of hair, professional and other cosmeceutical products range
from small suppliers such as $3 million Allerderm Laboratories to large firms such
as $250 million Neways International. Private companies have limited participation,
however, in the hair SAMPLE care and professional PAGE cosmeceutical product segments.
In the hair care cosmeceutical product segment, private firms are active solely
through the production of antidandruff shampoos, as the production and sale of
hair growth products are controlled by publicly-owned finasteride- and minoxidilbased
product manufacturers, Merck and Pharmacia. In the professional segment,
private companies are only active in the manufacture of peels, after-treatment
skin products and a few, low volume miscellaneous products. Botulinum toxinbased
treatments, and collagen implants and injections are primarily offered by
public firms such as Allergan and Inamed.
Private producers of antidandruff hair care products also often offer other
cosmeceuticals, and typically design their product to treat many types of scalp
problems. For example, Beta Dermaceuticals, a company with under $1 million in
sales, manufactures a number of antidandruff shampoos as well as skin care
cosmeceuticals. Person & Covey's antidandruff shampoos control dandruff,
seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis. The company also manufactures skin care
products and has sales of $7-10 million.
• Develop positioning
strategies based on
size of competitors.
Most private companies involved in professional cosmeceuticals offer these
products as extensions of their consumer product line. For example, $15 million
NeoStrata's dermatologicals are designed for use by dermatologists and plastic
surgeons, as well as by salon and spa professionals, and for at-home use. Among
the professional products are glycolic acid-based skin peels for use by physicians
during office procedures. Another firm, $1 million Peter Thomas Roth Labs,
manufactures SAMPLE professional CHART facial peels and masks. The company also offers
cleansers, scrubs, tonics, masks, moisturizers, vitamin C products, skin repair and
rejuvenation products, sun blocks, skin lighteners and brighteners, hair and body
care products, acne products and eye creams for at-home use.
