RTI Officers 2009/ 2010
Reports
RTI President 2009/ 2010
Rikus Badenhorst
[RT Southern Africa]
Dear Brothers in Round Table
Introduction
I have had the privilege, over the past 14
years of Tabling, to write many reports
summarising each consecutive year of Tabling
as Table Chairman, Area Chairman, Association
President, Africa Region Chairman/RTI
Secretary and RTI Vice President, but not
one of those reports was as difficult to put
together as this one. How does one
summarise what has happened in the most
dynamic social networking and service
organisation in the world, over a year
I think the best way to start this report
would be to summarise what the mandate
of Round Table International, as an umbrella
organisation, is. Our mandate is contained in
our aims and objectives, and I firmly believe
that as an RTI Board, we have lived these
Aims and Objectives this year. We have strived
to promote fellowship and understanding
between Round Table Associations worldwide.
We promoted the formation of new Round
Table Associations throughout the world. We
continued to initiate, develop, and improve
working relationships with 41 International
and Ladies Circle International where
possible, and we continued to promote joints
service projects between Associations.
Most of the activities
of the RTI Board are
described in the
monthly Newsflash
editions, and copies of
these are available for
download on our
website, so it is not my
intention to cut, copy,
and paste from these
to bulk up my report.
Instead, I will try and
highlight all the major
events of the year, and
just because I am me,
give some personal
comment every now
and then...
August to December 2009
As the RTI Board for 2009/10, our year got off with a flying
start at the end of the World Meeting in Alkmaar, very ably
convened by Vincent Van Twuijver and hosted by RT The
Netherlands. It was at this Board meeting that the following
major decisions were taken:
• All Official RTI communications to member
Associations will only take place via the RTI Secretary,
and will be addressed primarily to Association IRO’s. We
also decided to limit RTI communications to only absolutely
necessary direct mails, and where possible, communicate
via the monthly electronic newsletter, the RTI Newsflash.
• We appointed the
following administrative
assistants
to the RTI Board:
Nicos Zevlaris
(Webmaster) to assist
RTI VP Steve Ganado
with the Website, Dave
McKay (Newsflash) to
assist RTI Secretary
Gilles Debert with the
monthly newsletter,
and Alex Abela (Bookkeeper)
to assist
Romesh Fonseca with
the RTI accounts.
• The RTI Board will continue to build on the hard work
of previous boards to promote the image of RTI, and to
implement the directives as adopted in the 3-year vision
as implemented by the previous Board.
• The RTI Board will assist the 2010 World Meeting
hosting Association with marketing of the event, due
to the fact that RT Arabian Gulf, with less than 50 members,
had a very small budget to market the event.
• We made a resolution to actively seek a solution to the
perceived problem of RT Israel not being able to attend
the World Meeting in Dubai.
• We decided to launch the RTI Shop as a commerce
extension to the RTI website, where only Members
Associations could place orders (not individuals), and to
find an Association willing to assist with this function.
It was with sincere gratitude to the hard work of RTI President
2008-9, George M. Psaras that the 2009-10 Board could start
the year with very little administrative problems to deal with.
The handover to the 2009-10 Board was therefore
seamless, and work started from day 1.
I would also like to state here, that it was never the intention
of this year’s Board to try and fix issues that did
not need fixing. We actively sought to continue
building on solid foundations laid by previous
Boards, to adopt all the principles that were
deemed to be wholesome for Round Table, to
adapt these principles to suit the very dynamic
space we currently find ourselves in, and where
possible, we strived to improve where
improvement was called for.
During this period, the Board members visited
the following Associations/events:
1) Ladies Circle International AGM in Bangalore,
India (Rikus)
2) Round Table Sri Lanka (Rikus)
3) The Nordic Tablers Meeting (NTM) in Tallinn,
Estonia (Daniel)
4) RT Norway
Chairmen’s
meeting in Oslo,
Norway (Daniel)
5) RT 44 Bangalore,
Round Table
School project
(Rikus)
6) RT East Africa
reconvened AGM
in Nairobi, Kenya
(Gilles)
7) Re-charter of RT
Douglas 224 in
Douglas, South
Africa (Rikus)
8) RT Malta AGM in Valetta, Malta (Daniel, Gilles,
Steve)
9) EMA IRO’s Meeting in Haifa, Israel (Daniel)
10) 2nd RTI Board meeting, Dubai (Rikus, Steve,
Gilles, Romesh & Daniel)
11) RT 53 family Day in Lessines, Belgium (Daniel)
12) RT Luxembourg (Daniel)
13) RT Singapore (Romesh)
Our second Board meeting took place in Dubai,
at the venue of the 2010 World Meeting. The
reason we arranged to have the 2nd Board
meeting there was to familiarise the RTI Board
with the venue and Convenors, in order to assist
them to promote the meeting better on their
travels.
I also made use of this opportunity to meet with
a local solicitor in order to give me guidance
with regards to the issue of RT Israel being able
Continued on next page... 2
to attend the World Meeting. The result of this meeting, and
months of enquiries, led to a fairly successful follow up meeting
in May which led to a letter of invite from the Dubai
Government to all members of Round Table International,
irrespective of race, religion or creed, to attend the World
Meeting in Dubai. At the time of writing this report, I have
personally submitted the visa applications to attend the RTI
WM 2010 of one Tabler and a past EMA Chairman from RT
Israel to the Dubai Tourism Authority, (the only two applications
received from RT Israel) and we are waiting for the result of
the applications.
January – May 2010
The New Year started with the terrible disaster in Haiti with
countless people affected and the RTI Board received many
queries with regards to planned assistance. Unlike the
earthquake disaster in Italy during the previous year, where
Round Table had direct representation on the ground, the
same was not applicable in Haiti. We have no Round Table
clubs in this country. We did, however, manage to make contact
with an Active 20/30 Club in the Dominican Republic which
was mobilising support, and we passed on their details in the
January edition of the Newsflash for Associations who wanted
to get involved.
This period was also the busiest for all Board members as
most of the Association AGM’s took place during this period,
and, as with previous years, this year also had its fair share of
Anniversaries which called for attendance.
Round Table Day
As in the past, the birth
of Round Table was
celebrated on 14
March this year, and it
is really fantastic to see
how this day, and the
celebrations around it,
has grown from
strength to strength.
Round Table day offers
the opportunity on a
global scale, to
celebrate our
friendship and service and to highlight the impact we have
within our communities. We once again made Round Table
day pins available for sale, and offered a template for press
releases around the day.
3rd Board Meeting
Our third Board meeting took place during this period in
South Africa where some of the major topics of discussion
included:
• RTI Board member’s visits – maximising efforts to
make visits as per budget in order to expose as many
members as possible to RTI.
• Extension – taking the membership/extension function
away from The EMA Chairman in order to give him the
opportunity to concentrate on his busy region and on
the community service portfolio. The
membership/extension function will be allocated to the
RTI Vice President. We decided to bring this as a motion
to the RTI AGM. Extension to various countries in the
pipeline, and the role the RTI Board can play to assist, was
discussed at length.
• Ensuring that all regional meetings take place before
the RTI AGM, with
enough time to
allow Regions to
discuss possible
motions and still
have time to
submit them to
RTI before the 56
day Constitutional
deadline. The
Board will propose
this amendment to
the Constitution.
• RTI Shop – we
have set a final deadline by which the RTI
Shop needs to be operational.
• RTI Website – we discussed the functionality
of the current website and started
investigating how we can improve on the
website in order to make full use of this
communication tool.
• RTI Newsflash – we have decided to
appoint the current designer of the Newsflash
on a year by year basis, in order to ensure
that we maintain the same high quality, look
and feel as have been achieved this year. We
also started offering advertising space by way
of banner ads at the bottom of each page,
as a service to the members and as a tool
to generate income for RTI in order to keep
capitation fees as low as possible.
• RTI AGM and Regional Meetings – the
Board made a
resolution not to
promote any RTI
Meetings that fall
outside the
prescribed costing
guidelines. We will
continue to lobby
on behalf of our
members to
ensure that
convenors of RTI
Meetings keep
costing within
these guidelines.
This Board meeting was followed by a little
gift from our brothers in Iceland in the form
of an ash cloud, and set the tone for a very
busy period for all the RTI Board members.
During this period, the board members visited
the following Associations/events:
14) RT India AGM in Delhi, India (Rikus,
Romesh)
15) The Central Tablers Meeting (CTM) in
Liege, Belgium (Daniel)
34) RT USA AGM in Washington D.C, USA (Daniel)
35) RT Eastern Africa AGM in Nairobi, Kenya (Gilles)
36) RT Sweden AGM in Jönköping, Sweden (Daniel)
So much happened during this period, it will probably take
me a lifetime to relive all the memories and ponder over
issues that came up and were handled on a daily basis.
With your permission, I would like to touch on a few topics
that have stood out for me during the year.
Membership
It has been clear, since
especially the lively
debates around the age
rule and membership
issues during the AGM
in Pattaya, Thailand, that
membership and the
growth thereof has
become a major focal
point within the
Member Associations.
This was translated
into a motion that was
passed that all
Associations will
present a viable and sustainable membership plan at this AGM
in Dubai.
The fact of the matter, and I am sure most of you are aware
of this, is that membership and the growth of Round Table
have been a topic of lively discussion throughout most of our
Table careers. It is my contention that this topic will stay
foremost in member’s minds for many years to come – the
simple reality is that we are a member driven organisation,
without members, there cannot be a Round Table movement.
At the end of the day, there can only be one responsible factor
to growth or decline of membership: each and every single
current member. Ask yourself this question on a daily basis
at the end of the day: what did I do today to introduce a new
member to Round Table
The good news with regards to membership from an
International point of view is that over the past two years,
we have grown in membership as a whole. Associations that
have traditionally shown a year–on-year decrease of
membership have stunted this decrease, and all indications
are that they will start growing if they continue on the path
they have set for
themselves. I recently
received a mail
informing me of the recharter
of RT Bexley
191 in RTBI. Now, that
in it-self might not be
awe inspiring news,
even for RTBI, after all,
we (re) charter new
clubs the whole time.
What is pretty unique
though, is that all the
members of this rechartered
club are
between the ages of 18 and 22! It’s happening!
We have also seen some very good growth in
most Associations – so much so that we should
have more members at the end of this
International year than what we started with.
Let us continue to capitalise on the weak world
economy to strengthen Round Table – for it was
during similar circumstances that the seed of
Round Table was sown and grew in 1927.
Extension
We did not charter any new Associations this
year – there is absolutely no shame in this. This
year proved to be a year of consolidation and
growth in Association membership, and our
incoming President Steve is looking forward to
the re-charter of RT Latvia and the charter of
RT Georgia within the first few weeks of the
New Year – well done RT Estonia and RT
Germany!
We have also reestablished
contact
with Tablers in
Singapore, we have two
Associations
collaborating to
charter Round Table in
Australia, we have
contact with a Tabler
in China wanting to
start Round Table
there, and we have
direct contact with a
young businessman in
Azerbaijan enquiring
about starting Round Table in his country. Apart
from this, Spain and Faroe Islands are still in our
sights – it will certainly be a busy period for RTI
in the next few years.
Yes, of course we have some Associations that
have been chartered and that are struggling –
but, let us always remember that the mother
Associations are only a phone call away to come
and assist, to visit and to invite – use them!
Ladies Circle, 41 and Agora/Tangent –
“four clubs one vision” with Round
Table
The “Four Clubs One Vision” idea started with
President Ravi Khanna (2007-8) and President
Continued on next page... 4
George M. Psaras
followed through on
this vision during last
year. The main idea
would be that the 4
Clubs have so much in
common, with
Agora/Tangent being
the “seniors” club for
LCI and Club 41 being
the same for RTI, that
regular meeting might
be to the benefit of all
our Members, in order
to share ideas and to
promote membership to our various organisations. Prior to
the joint meeting we held in Alkmaar, it seemed clear that
Agora and Tangent had issues. The issues revolved around
membership, and without getting into it in detail, the result
of these issues was that the RTI Board, the LCI Board and
the 41 International Board decided to suspend any efforts to
continue with the “Four Clubs One Vision” movement until
such time as Agora and Tangent could become one fully
representative international body.
I believe that Round Table, Ladies Circle, Club 41 and
Agora/Tangent are distinct organisations with similar goals
that need to co-exist in parallel spaces: we are similar in the
sense that we all thrive on members interaction, different
because we appeal to different sections of the population,
and it would be to our advantage to work alongside each
other, respecting our respective spaces, in order to exploit
our similar goals and to celebrate our differences.
Communication
In my view, if the all functions that
Round Table International has can
be summarised, it would be
summarised in this one word:
Communication.
The strength of Tabling and the
weakness of Round Table, are
contained in communication or the
lack thereof, depending on how you
look at it. Unfortunately, we live in
a communication overload era, with
social media competing with e-mails,
text messages etc… To this effect,
the RTI Board this year made a
conscious decision not to send
direct e-mails to the Association
IRO’s unless it was absolutely
necessary. The average Tabler gets daily mail from his Club
Chairman, weekly mail from his Area Chairman, monthly mails
from the Association President and his executive – the last
thing he needs is direct mails from Round Table International.
We therefore decided that we will make all relevant information
available in the monthly RTI Newsflash, which we send to
every Association Officer. We also publish the link to download
the Newsflash file on the Facebook RTI page, and we place
a copy on the RTI Website for download. So the bottom
line this year was, if your Floor Members did not
receive the Newsflash, they did not know what was
happening in Round Table International – please make
sure you pass the link on when you get it.
June – August
During this period, the
Board members visited
the following
Associations/events:
37) RT San Marino
AGM in San Marino
(Daniel)
38) RT Seychelles AGM
on Praslin Island,
Seychelles (Gilles)
39) RT Nepal AGM in
Kathmandu, Nepal
(Romesh)
40) RT France AGM and 60th Anniversary in
Dole, France (Rikus)
41) RT Central Africa AGM in Bulawayo,
Zimbabwe (Gilles)
42) EMATM in Pisa, Italy (Rikus, Steve, Daniel)
43) RT Norway AGM in Haugesund, Norway (Daniel)
44) RT Asia Pacific Regional Meeting in Colombo,
Sri Lanka (Rikus, Romesh)
45) RT Sweden AGM in Jönköping, Sweden (Daniel)
46) Ladies Circle AGM in Bruges, Belgium (Steve)
This concludes the visits that the RTI Board had
done at time of writing this report, and here,
allow me to thank every single Association and
individual Tabler who invited, transferred to and
from airports, booked train tickets and flights,
bribed hotel staff and bought many bottles of
beer and (red) wine in order to make the RTI
Board members feel at home - each of you have
left a legacy of a lifetime’s worth of memories
with each of us.
During June and July
the Soccer World Cup
hit my home country,
South Africa, like a
handball from
Maradona and with my
business being tourism,
I found myself
immersed in
something very alien
to me since I joined
Round Table in 1996 –
Hard Work.....I
apologise if my
responses to e-mails
was slower than normal during this time, it’s very
difficult to concentrate with the sound of
thousands of Vuvuzelas all over the place! We
survived the Soccer World Cup, and I have never
been as proud of my country as I am now....If
you have never been to South Africa, you wouldn’t
know what I am talking about, come and
experience life!
At this stage, I need to say thank you, and in
doing this, I apologise in advance if I have left
anyone out – it is not my intention to offend...
First of all, to the RTI Board of 2009-10: I cannot
imagine serving Round Table on this level with
a time of financial stress and insecurity worldwide, each of
you tackled the year with vigour and resolve, determined to
serve Round Table to the best of your ability – I know it has
not been easy – 3 out of the 5 RTI Board members changed
jobs during the year, but despite this, continued with their RTI
duties as if nothing had happened – true grit!
Daniel: EMA Chairman / Membership and Community
Service Officer – thank you for continuously contacting fellow
Board members just to chat, to see how they are. Your
enthusiasm was infectious – you have had to make some
difficult personal decisions this year, and throughout this, you
kept your positive outlook on life – don’t ever lose that, it’s
a unique quality and it makes you a very special person, you
and Maria still have much to offer Round Table and Ladies
Circle – enjoy every moment!
Romesh: Asia Pacific
Chairman and Treasurer –
thank you for looking after
the RTI accounts this year
whilst trying to revive
Associations in your
Region that have all but
disappeared. Most of all,
thank you for the kind and
gentle person that you are,
you have, with your soft
spoken and mild
demeanour, been a very
calming influence on the
Board this year in general
and on me specifically, we
are lucky to have you and Thushi as family.
Gilles: Africa Chairman and Secretary – if there was one
Board member who breathed Round Table this year, it was
you brother. I don’t think any mails directed at the RTI Board
was left unanswered, you constantly sent out reminders and,
in true Tabling spirit, still had time to see the funny side of
any difficult situation. Begging for contributions to our Newsflash
is a thankless task, but you have elevated this function to an
art form – you took the role of RTI Secretary to the next
level, Round Table is indebted to you and Christelle for all
your hard work this year.
Steve: Vice President and Chief-Coffee-Maker-during-boardmeetingsJ
- thank you for all your support this year, thank you
for buying into the 3-year vision that started last year, and
most of all, thank you for being my brother. I have known you
and Chantal for a long time, and I know that you will both be
very capable leaders in Round Table International for the year
to come. I know exactly how you feel at the moment – and
no, no one ever knows everything there is to know about
Tabling, but know this: I and every single previous President
is only a phone call away when you need us – have a great
year and don’t blink!
Best wishes and congratulations also to Stijn, Ross, Lars and
Manoj, have fun boys!
I address a special thank you also to the Convenor of the RTI
World Meeting in Dubai, Richard Miles, along with Rob
Duce, and all the Tablers and 41’ers of this very small
Association. The amount of work you had already put in at
the time of writing this report, is directly reflected in the fact
that more than 240 rooms have already been booked in the
conference hotel – I am sure all that are attending will have
an amazing time, and those who do not attend,
will regret not being there....Thank you also for
hosting the 2nd RTI Board meeting in Dubai last
year.
The RTI Board this year was able to function
efficiently with the assistance of the following
Tablers, Old Tablers and Institutions:
Nicos Zevlaris (Past EMA Chairman - Old
Tabler Cyprus) and Michalis Aristodemou
(President RT Cyprus): Website assistants; Alex
Abela (Past EMA Chairman - RT Malta): Bookkeeper;
Kevin Attard Compagno (RT
Malta): RTI Directory; Dave McKay (Inkundla
Editor – RT Southern Africa): Newsflash layout
I also need to thank (starting to feel like the
Oscars now...): my Brother-In-Law Kobus
Potgieter, who introduced me to Round Table in
1996, George Wessels who inducted me into my
first club – RT Burg 167, Dave Haigh for kicking
me out of RT Port of Natal 76 because I was
arrogant (I learned a very valuable lesson here),
Alex McAlery for catching a potential drop-out
Tabler (…), Tablers of RT North Durban 184 and
Norman Moodley, for many years of travelling
and fun, RT Dubai 1 for welcoming me as a
member for a short while, RT Cape Town No 9
(Gordon McKelvie) for understanding why I
transferred to RT Somerset West 31 to retire.
Thank you RT Southern Africa for all you
have done for me over the years, and thank you
for hosting the 3rd RTI Board meeting in
Hartenbos.
Thank you RTI Presidents Tom Albrigtsen
and Franken Stassen – I could not have
asked for better mentors over the years, you are
both true gentlemen and brothers. Thank you to
Waldo, Arawn, Simon and George – you were
truly inspirational leaders of RTI.
Thank you to all the great Tablers, 41ers, Circlers
and their partners who opened their hearts and
homes over the past 15 years to me and Natalie.
We have made enough friends to last us two
lifetimes, and we cannot wait to start developing
those friendships over the next 40 years. I will
be axed from Round Table next year in April at
the RTSA AGM, and as a swansong, Natalie and
I will lead the Owen Frye Tour beforehand –
hope to see you there.
To my employer, African Pride Tours and our MD,
Trevor Hewett – thank you for allowing me to
be a part time employee for so long.
Live a Life that Matters
Unknown
Ready or not, someday it will all come to an end.
There will be no more sunrises,
no minutes, hours or days.
All the things you collected,
whether treasured or forgotten,
will pass to someone else.
Your wealth, fame and temporal
power will shrivel to irrelevance.
It will not matter what you owned,
or what you were owed.
Your grudges,resentments, frustrations,
and jealousies will finally disappear.
So, too, your hopes,ambitions, plans,
and to-do lists will expire.
The wins and losses that once seemed so important
will fade away. It won't matter where you came from,
or on what side of the tracks you lived, at the end.
It won't matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant.
Even your gender and skin colour will be irrelevant.
So what will matter
How will the value of your days be measured
What will matter is not what you bought,
but what you built;
not what you got, but what you gave.
What will matter is not your success,
but your significance.
What will matter is not what you learned,
but what you taught.
What will matter...
is every act of integrity, compassion,
courage or sacrifice..
..that enriched, empowered or encouraged,
others to emulate your example.
What will matter is not your competence,
but your character.
What will matter is not how many people you knew,
but how many will feel a lasting loss when you're gone.
What will matter are not your memories,
but the memories that live in those who loved you.
What will matter is how long you will be remembered,
by whom and for what.
Living a life that matters doesn't happen by accident.
It's not a matter of circumstance, but of choice.
Choose to live a life that matters.
in Round Table and to my life partner and wife,
Natalie. You have stood by and watched me go
from Table Vice-Chairman to RTI President over
10 years without stopping – you never once
stopped supporting me, all I can say is that now
it’s my turn to be there for all of you... I love all
three of you with all my heart.
The inspiration for our motto for this year –
Live Round Table, came from something a
friend sent me many years ago, which made a
significant impact on how I approached Round
Tabling over the years. I would love to share that
with you.
Keep on living Round Table!
Live Round Table
RTI Vice-President 2009/ 2010
Steve Ganado [RT Malta]
Dear President Rikus, fellow RTI Officers, RTI
Councillors and friends,
It has been a great honour and pleasure for me
to serve you over the past year. And what a year
this has been! It has been crazy both at a personal
and RT level.
On a personal level, I had to balance on being
more present for my wife after her father passed
away, and i also had to deal with finding a new
job that fits in better with my RTI obligations!
On an RT level, there were the various visits that
needed to be organised and prepared for, articles
to write for the Newsflash, and a plethora of
emails to reply to every week and also keeping
up with my regular Table meetings at
home!
I travelled to the following
meetings over the past 13
months:
• RTI Board Meeting #2, Dubai
• RT Estonia 20th Anniversary, Tallinn
• RT Faroe Islands Introduction
Meeting
• RT Day Charity Dinner, Cyprus
• RT Southern Africa AGM & RTI
Board Meeting #3, Hartenbos, South
Africa
• 41Intl AGM, Jyvaskyla, Finland
• RT Africa AGM & RT Mauritius AGM,
Mauritius
• EMA Tablers Meeting, Pisa, Italy
• LCI AGM, Bruges, Belgium
During all these trips, my main focus
was to promote the RTI AGM in Dubai
and also motivate members for growth
and better communication between
Associations. Two of my trips also had
Steve Ganado
another aim; RT Iceland
has been hard at work
promoting Round Table
on the Faroe Islands.
A Table has been
formed, and they are
hard at work building
up a good membership
base. During my visit,
I met the future Tablers
who are learning what
RT is all about thanks
to the guidance of RT
Iceland, who,
notwithstanding the
distance (and the ash cloud!), are doing their best to visit
them and keep in regular contact. We look forward to the
charter of this club later next year.
During my visit to Estonia for their 20th Anniversary
celebrations, I had the occasion to meet up with the group
of young future Tablers working to the re-chartering of RT
Latvia. The charter is due late January 2011, and I look forward
to them chartering Tables 2 and 3 in the near future!
VP stuff
The one thing the VP
is supposed to do is to
keep the coffee flowing
during Board Meetings.
Unlike my
predecessors, I
managed to avoid it
most of the time...
Instead, I kept
everyone stocked on
beer!
Other than that, one
of my main goals this
year was to promote the 3 year plan and most importantly
to encourage Associations to work on their Membership
Plans in order to have them ready in time for the 2010 AGM.
As always we had those who rose to the challenge and came
up with great plans; others who preferred to keep their cards
close to their chest, but i feel that the main aim of this exercise
was to make Associations realise that none of us are immune
to the risks of decreasing membership. In fact this has led to
a reversal of the previous year’s trend and membership, in
general, is definitely on the rise.
Communication
As mentioned earlier,
one of the main aims
of the Board and also
one of the points in
the Vision Document
was to improve our
Communication and
Image.
Over the past few
years, our communications
have improved
tremendously thanks
to the RTI Website, the
RTI Newsflash and new communications platforms like
Facebook and LinkedIn. This year, we worked on keeping
everyone updated through the website and mostly
through the RTI NewsFlash and Facebook. Thanks
to the hard work of RTI Secretary Gilles, the
quality of the Newsflash has increased greatly,
and we have now arrived at a stage where we
need to consolidate the work we do on the RTI
Newsflash with our Website. In the coming
months you will see big changes in the website
to update it to our current requirements.
Thank You!
I would like to thank all the
members of the Board for their
hard work throughout the year,
and most importantly for their
support. We have worked as a welloiled
machine under the direction
of President Rikus, and in the
process we had a fantastic time
meeting fellow Tablers from all over
the world. This experience has
proved to me that the sacrifices
we make to work for Round Table
are all worth the effort and I look
forward to a fantastic year ahead.
Finally i must thank Chantal, my
incredibly understanding wife, who
has realised that she actually
married Round Table first and
foremost. I must also thank all those who
supported me throughout my travels and those
who believed in me and encouraged me to go
for the job, especially George Psaras and Rikus
Badenhorst who were always there to encourage
and guide me.
What can i say Tabling… Make it count!
Dear Tablers, fellow RTI Officers and Mr. President,
What an amazing experience!
The EMA region can only be described as
AMAZING. How can one describe the different
varieties of such a vast region without writing
several books about it
My year started at the RTI World Meeting in
Holland. What a wonderful feeling to receive the
EMA jewel, but also the feeling of “can I do this”
Can I make this happen These questions have
been with me all throughout the year, and I
decided that YOU will have to answer this, not
me. I have made the most of my year in office,
and I would do it again in a heartbeat.
The EMA function does not only consist of traveling and
meeting Tablers across the Region, but it also focuses on two
primary functions which this year has consisted of Membership
within RTI and Community Service.
Membership
within RTI
Membership has been
on top of the agenda
for the past few years
as we saw the decline
of some of the larger
Associations. In order
to be able to assist the
Associations that are
struggling, a motion
was passed during the
2008 AGM in Thailand that EVERY
association had to come forward
with a membership plan by 2010.
We, on the RTI Board, have noticed
that most of the Associations that
have made such a plan are
increasing in membership. The plan
should not be only a three year
plan, but a working document for
the National Board, and should be
duly updated. Should your
organization need tips or ideas on
how to form and write these,
please feel free to contact me as
I know who has really good
working ones, and I am sure that
they will be eager to offer any
assistance.
Community Service in Round Table
WOW, you guys make it happen. I have seen,
read and heard of the most amazing community
service projects ranging from Cannonball Run
in South Africa, to a lottery in Norway, to a RT
funded school in India, to children's wishes in
many countries. If I was to explain everything
about this, we would all be amazed on how much
we can contribute
when we stick our
mind to it.
During the RTI 2008
AGM in Holland, we
discussed if RTI should
have a community
service project and
two were discussed.
Firstly we discussed
Malaria No More
(MNM), which is a very
significant organization
whose aim is to rid the world of malaria. RT the
Netherlands are working very closely with them
and are seeing that it is not only financial aid that
they need assistance with, but more awareness
and education. If we decide to have this as our
project, it requires long term dedication but this
could be as important as polio has been for
Rotary.
The second project that was discussed was
prostate cancer awareness. This is something
that we all face and have a high probability of
getting. This project is not linked to an Association,
but it would be run from RTI by its Member
Associations. As this is not primarily money
raising, but more informative, we could use the
”mowember” movement which is to grow a
mustache during the month of November in
order to both get sponsors to pay for it to be
removed, and to raise the topic of why you are
growing a mustache.
EMATM 2010
The EMATM in Pisa was great with lots of Tablers
and most importantly, lots of Tabling! During the
Continued on next page... 9
forum and the meeting,
we had the
opportunity to discuss
social media and the
impact it has on us. We
also spent some time
on sub-regional
guidelines and quite
some time on pricing
of RT events before we
started the discussions
on new Associations.
The presentation on
Social media was very
interesting and it just goes to prove that we have a great
possibility to use this more.
Pricing of RT events has been the discussion throughout this
year and we all agree that we expect things to be cheaper
and we can settle for less ”fancy”, but on the other hand we
all want to show the best of our own country. We agreed
that we would try to promote low cost events and try to
encourage the ones who have overly priced events to cut
costs or we will not attend.
During the EMATM, the Region elected Lars Vestermann,
RT Denmark, as the new EMA Chairman for 2010-2011. Felix
“National Floor Member” Ratgen became EMA
Tabler of the Year, and RT Belgium was awarded EMA
Association of the Year.
Extension!
What a wonderful
feeling to be able to
charter a new Association.
Next year we will
charter 2.
Firstly, RT Latvia will
be re-chartered on the
29th of January by RT
Estonia. Then in March,
we will see the charter
of RT Georgia
which is handled by RT
Germany. I wish both
new countries good luck and I hope I can attend this spectacular
events.
Furthermore, in working progress we have RT in Spain,
Faroe Islands, Australia and Singapore. If you know
anyone in these places, please send me an e-mail.
Also we need to help struggling Associations.
RTI Shop
During the year we also saw the RTI Shop go live. This shop
is created so that we all can order small quantities of RT
International merchandise. I hope that you all come with
feedback for the store as this is by no means a static store,
but will be one that will grow continuously.
How can I sum up my year
I can truly say that the experience has been WONDERFUL,
and it is all thanks to all of you who made it superb. Lars, all
the best for the coming year, you are truly in for a treat.
Finally I want to thank
my wonderful Maria
for all her support and
for allowing me to
spend every other
weekend meeting my
new old friends.
So my friends
Where will I meet you
next
Most likely at a RT
event
Live Round Table
RT Africa Chairman/ RTI
Secretary 2009/ 2010
Gilles Debert [RT Mauritius]
Thank YOU !
2009/ 2010 was probably one of the very best
years of my 12-year long active Table life, and I
must thank fellow Tablers from the Africa Region
for allowing me to live it. I have had the honour
to serve my Club as Chairman in 2001/ 2002,
my Association for 5 consecutive years, including
a year as Association President in 2008/ 2009,
and I certainly cherish those years for what it
has brought to me. This year gave me the
opportunity to be friend and work with some
of the best Tablers I have ever met: Rikus, Steve,
Daniel, and last but not least, Romesh – as well
as all the many Association Presidents and Officers
I have had the privilege to interact with. Thank
you very much, from the bottom of my heart.
Regional Chairman and RTI
Officer – two portfolios for
a year
Since 2004/ 2005 and the unified
RTI Constitution, each Regional
Chairman sits on the RTI Board,
either as Secretary, Treasurer or
Membership & Community Service
Officer. As it was the case for my
four immediate predecessors in
Africa, I was designated RTI
Secretary by our President. I must
say I was very pleased with this
appointment because the job of
Secretary fits me well – at least I
hope so!
My main duty this year as RTI
Secretary was to publish the RTI Newsflash -
every month. The Newsflash started in 2006/
2007, during the term of office of RTI President
Arawn Johnson. Over the last 4 years, the initial
1-page amateurish information newsletter evolved
to a 14-page professionally designed, full-fledged
RTI Magazine, featuring articles from (almost) all
Associations! I can tell you this involved a LOT
of work, taking up many week-ends
planning ahead, soliciting and editing
content. I loved doing it, but I realise
this is so time consuming that this
will be a challenge for my
successor(s) to continue on the
same trend. As a piece of advice,
and given the size this publication
has now reached, this can only be
a team effort. On that account, I
must thank Dave McKay for his
work as RTI Board Assistant, doing
all the layout and graphic design
for the Newsflash this year. Dave
was fully responsible for the great
look of our Newsflash this year,
and the good news is he will
continue to assist the Board on a
(very modest) retainer basis next year.
Other secretarial duties this year included keeping the
RTI Email Contact List up to date, plus of course all of
the traditional work
you would expect from
any Secretary, from
producing Meeting
Packs in a consistent
way, to delivering
Minutes of Meeting
for our RTI Board
Meetings, the RT Africa
Regional Meeting (my
Regional meeting),
distributing and
amending all as per RTI
Constitution, and of
course the RTI
Councillor Forum and AGM. The updating of the database is
an on-going work – with a lot more to do during the busy
AGM season from roughly March to July, while the rest requires
careful preparation and respect of the Constitutional deadlines.
RT Africa Chairman travels
During the course of this year, I
had the opportunity to travel to
RT Eastern Africa twice
(reconvened AGM in August 2009
in Nairobi, and AGM in May 2010
in Eldoret), RT Arabian Gulf (as we
held a RTI Board meeting #2 in
Dubai in November 2009), RT
Madagascar (for RT Day in March
2010), RT Southern Africa (again,
because RTI Board meeting #3 was
held during ARTSA in Hartenbos
in April 2010), RT Seychelles (AGM
June 2010 in Praslin) and RT
Central Africa (AGM July 2010 in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe). The
RT Africa Regional Meeting was held in May 2010, hosted by
my home Association RT Mauritius. There is only one
Association I unfortunately couldn’t visit, RT Zambia, due to
professional reasons, but I am sure the next Chairman will
make sure to attend this one in 2011!
FAQs
The question I was most often asked is “how can you cope
with all these travels” When you consider it, the travel
requirements for a RT Africa Chairman are not that huge: in
total, I travelled
overseas 9 times over
a period of 13 months
for Round Table,
including two RTI
AGMs when taking
office and finishing it.
Is it that tough I don’t
think so, and I am sure
there are many
experienced Tablers in
this Region who can
cope with this. When
you consider it, the
positions of RTI
President or EMA Chairman are a lot more
demanding when it comes to travel (especially
as this year’s Officers were not exactly living in
a central location as far as Table is concerned)!
The second most popular one was: “it must have
cost you a lot of money” Well, of course it does
cost something. Now, the RTI budget covers your
flights, but you have to remain within budget or
pay for yourself (I did it once), and the Association
you visit always hosts you. So at the end of the
day, I was paying when my partner Christelle
came with me, and of course for all the
miscellaneous expenses like presents, booze and
miscellaneous stuff. But Round Table, like any
activity you are actively involved in, costs money,
and if you enjoy this activity, this is something
one can manage isn’t it It is not how much it
costs, but how much you enjoy it! And I enjoyed
it more than I spent, really.
Objectives for the year
But let’s come to the priorities I put forward at
the beginning of my term of office: joint service
projects with EMA and extension.
If fellowship is #1 in
EMA, then service is
#1 in Africa. And
through the best of
both worlds, we can
achieve wonders.
Knowing the efforts
done on Table level, my
contribution was to
shed some light on the
projects conducted in
Africa, and the medium
was the Africa
Service Projects
column in the RTI
Continued on next page... 11
Newsflash. Throughout the year,
you could read about projects
presented by RT Lusaka 18, RT
Blantyre 20, RT Dubai 1, RT
Mauritius 3, RT Nairobi District
23, RT Madagascar, RT Seychelles
and RT Southern Africa. The main
purpose was to raise international
awareness on community service
initiatives from our Region. The
secret hope, of course, was that
it materialised into a joint service
project between some of our Clubs
and clubs from EMA. Unfortunately,
the only feedback received was
from RT Cyprus on the Blantyre 20 project – but it did not
materialise into a twinning project, and past RTI President
Patrick Morganti pledging EUR 200 out of his personal pocket
to the RT Dubai 1 project. But, I, for one, know that things
keep happening in the background thanks to the work of Joe
Tablers throughout the Region.
The second objective was extension within the Region…
but I must say this is still a disappointment. Although I had
contacts in Benin and Mozambique, both proved to be dead
ends… From a geographical point of view, the Associations
which are in better position to extend to another country
are the ones on mainland Africa – which means only 4 out of
8 in the Region, all in the southern part of Africa. Considering
that RT Eastern Africa and RT Central Africa need to focus
on themselves first, and that RT Southern Africa is involved
in an extension project in Australia, guess what RT Zambia,
you are the only hope in the Region for this task in the
immediate future! Suba, Phasion, Moffat, and my friends from
Zambia, we spoke about it: look at Congo (DRC), your
immediate neighbour, where you told me you have potential
contacts. Your Association is strong, it’s doing well, start
exporting!
How are our Associations
doing
Total membership of the
Africa Region stands at 1,799
active Tablers (May 2010) in
219 Clubs, which is remarkably
stable compared to 2009
figure of 1,800 members
(down from 2,070 in 2008). But
the picture differs from one
Association to another, with 5
Associations increasing, 2
decreasing and 1 being stable in
membership. Should RT Southern
Africa grow significantly again, and
the Region will easily pass the 2,000
mark again.
I think all Associations in the Region
deserve a note about their
activities. So here it is.
RT Arabian Gulf - 45 Age Rule/
41 Tablers (decreasing)
RT Arabian Gulf has turned 30 this
year and of course, the highlight
of the year for them is the
organisation of the 2010 RTI World
Meeting in Dubai. RT Arabian Gulf
has some unique characteristics in the Region.
First, it is not geographically located in Africa.
And secondly, it is made up 100% of expatriates
living in the Arabian Gulf: Dubai, Kuwait, and
Bahrain are where the active Tables presently
are. Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi, where there
used to be, and maybe back again in the future.
This second characteristic has a significant impact
on how RT Arabian Gulf lives and operates. First,
because of the age at which expats reach a
professional position in this region, RT Arabian
Gulf follows the 45-year age rule. And as no local
join Round Table, membership to RT Arabian
Gulf is very much a matter of expats going in
and out… With such characteristics, it is almost
a miracle RT Arabian Gulf turned 30! Year 2009
wasn’t very good in terms of membership
considering the toll paid to global economic crisis
and expat going back home. In 2009/ 2010, the
membership stands at 41 active Tablers in 5
Tables, and has been decreasing minus 15%. Yet,
the Association plans to re-open Tables in Muscat,
Abu Dhabi and Jeddah, and the recipe to adopt
is likely to be different to what other Associations
in the Region use. Worth noting, the Association
fund raisers topped EUR 60,000 this year which
is quite commendable given the membership
base. And of course, RTAG are our host for the
World Meeting this year! For having worked with
them all year, hats down to Convenors Richard
and Rob, what a tandem! I am sure those 2 most
committed Tablers will contribute to make this
event a very memorable one (and for sure a very
BIG one Richard!).
RT Central Africa – 45 Age Rule/ 147 Tablers
(increasing)
RT Central Africa is the last Association
I have had the chance to visit during
my term of office. It is also the only
Association AGM I have attended three
times in my Table career: 2001 (Victoria
Falls, Zimbabwe), 2008 (Kasane,
Botswana), and 2010 (Bulawayo,
Zimbabwe). RT Central Africa has
specific challenges due to spanning
three countries (Malawi being the third),
and three currencies, experiencing very
different economic situations and
where cost of travel is really prohibitive. Over
the past few years, the economy collapse in
Zimbabwe has taken its toll on membership, and
the once largest RTCA Area has now been
overtaken by Area Botswana after losing 40% of
its members. Yet, as the economic situation kind
of stabilised with the introduction of the US
Dollar as official currency, Area Zimbabwe is
growing again and things are bouncing back. RT
Central Africa currently has 20 Tables for a total
of 147 active Tablers, a small yet encouraging 5%
growth after several years of decline. Unlike many
Associations which have adopted the 45 age rule,
the average age of members remains reasonable
(34/ 35), which is good sign for the immediate
future, although the number of members per
Club remains low. Thanks to the good work of
two successive Association Boards
(congratulations to past Presidents Asa and
Continued on next page... 12
Allan!), the finances have stabilised, but remain too weak for
the Association to realise all its goals. Fortunately, after many
efforts, RTCA will be represented in Dubai!
RT Eastern Africa – 40 Age Rule/
59 Tablers (decreasing)
With a total of 11 Clubs – but only 5
of which are actually active, and just
59 active Tablers, RTEA is probably the
Association in the Region which has
suffered most in the past few years.
There has been no Table in Ethiopia
for as long as we can remember, the
attempt to re-charter RT Dar-Es-Salaam
in Tanzania was so far unsuccessful, and
after the closing of RT Jinja Nile 9, the
only remaining Table in Uganda, RT
Kampala 2, has only a few members left and is in dire straits
by all accounts. Technically speaking, RTEA is therefore limited
to Kenya only and it is also struggling there. For this reason,
I decided to visit RT Eastern Africa twice this year, and
motivated the RTI Board to make an exception to the RTI
Travel Fund guidelines and pay them a travel subsidy [for
attending the RTIWM 2009 in Alkmaar]. During my two visits,
I had the opportunity to discuss the way forward with
Association Officers, laying out points of action for the future.
RT remains deeply rooted in Kenya, and there are still many
committed Tablers involved, but they need some serious
questioning and a well driven plan of action over the next few
years to successfully rebuild their Association. Decisions have
been made at the last AGM, and I hope the current Association
Board will be able to act on it effectively. Vinay, Shrikesh, Bobby,
Gugu, Vishal, Mital – my friends, you are the ones to lead this
and you know it! This Association probably has an opportunity
when it comes to extension to other countries, but I don’t
foresee it in the near future as Tabling in Kenya needs to reinvent
itself first. The support of the RTI community may be
very much welcome, and I encourage it. I wish them all the
be st and hope to stay in contact with my friends there.
RT Madagascar – 40 Age Rule/ 52 Tablers (increasing)
When you consider the economic climate that has been
prevailing for more than a year in this country, you wonder
how RT not only survived, but even
grew! I think they owe it to the
leadership and commitment of some
key Association Officers, who did
whatever they could to uplift the
standards of their Clubs and show the
way forward: Bachy, Nicolas, Dominique,
Rija, Lalaina, Tiana – you all make RT
proud my friends. Since its Chartering
in 1995, RT Madagascar had always
maintained very close – and almost
exclusive, ties with its mother
Association RT France. But for the last
few years, with the emergence of a
new generation of Tablers, they started
to look at the Region and to their involvement on RTI level.
The results are growing fellowship exchanges with Indian
Ocean clubs from Mauritius, Reunion and soon Seychelles, a
presence every year at the RT Africa Regional Meeting plus
a successful bid to host the 2012 edition, and of course, the
full membership to RTI effective in Dubai. RT Madagascar
currently has 3 Clubs for a total of 52 active Tablers (which
means a fairly high average number of Tablers per Club,
combined with a very low 25 y.o. average age of members),
and they have the project to re-charter a 3rd Club in capital
city Antananarivo. Now aligned with the rest of
the Region as far as their AGM date is concerned
(moved from November to April), RT Madagascar
expects to play a full role in the Region – and
needless to say, I wish them good luck!
RT Mauritius – 40 Age Rule/ 68
Tablers (increasing)
It is probably more difficult to report
on your home Association, especially
if you’ve been leading it only the year
before… RT Mauritius continues to be
doing extremely well. With 4 Clubs
since 2008, membership grew from 51
to 68 active Tablers (+33%) in just 2
years, and this is allied with a just as
strong Club 41 and a first Ladies Circle
club in the making. In a matter of a few
years, the RT Mauritius membership
base has been considerably renewed,
with a medium age around 30 and a membership
per Club of 17 Tablers on average! This really
makes a difference when it comes to this
Association dynamism, and I feel it won’t be long
before RT Mauritius charters a 5th and maybe
6th Club, and pass the 100 mark if they continue
at this pace under the leadership of a very able
National Board headed by Nuvin, Bertrand and
Andy. RT Mauritius always put a lot of emphasis
on local fund raising allied to international fund
raising with twin Tables or Associations for its
service projects, and the recent years have seen
increasing successes. The big talk of the moment
however remains the registration of the
Association and/ or each individual Table with
the Registrar of Associations, an intention initiated
several years ago… and still not completed.
Sometimes, the seemingly easiest things is the
most difficult to achieve!
RT Seychelles – 45 Age Rule/ 22
Tablers (increasing)
RT Seychelles is the smallest Association
in the Region, but certainly not the less
active and dynamic one! Consisting of
just 1 Club with 22 active Tablers, RT
Seychelles is recognised as an
Association, full member of RTI because
they retained the status of ARTIO after
the Mauritius Tables resigned. What
was widely seen as an unfortunate thing
a few years ago (the “divorce” of those
two countries) eventually proved
profitable for both parties, which now
individually are some of the most dynamic
Associations in the Region. The big thing in
Seychelles is the annual RT Regatta – headed by
Ashvin this year, no less than a nation-wide event
that is contributing to the goodwill of RT more
than anything else I have ever seen (they were
featured on national TV more than 10 times a
year!). The RT Seychelles Regatta is a public fund
raising, and it brings an average of EUR 40k of
income for their projects. Not many Clubs in
the world can claim such a track record. With
an average age which is also quite low (33) for
a 45 Age Rule Association, and a fellowship second
to none, RT Seychelles has a lot of assets to keep
striving for many years! Ray, Joel, Nigel, Andy,
Christian, Bernard and all my friends in Seychelles,
I look forward to visit Paradise Island again!
RT Southern Africa – 40 Age Rule/
1,308 Tablers (stable)
For the some years already, RTSA has
been one of the Associations in RTI
losing the most members, which given
their numbers, impacted significantly on
global figures. But thanks to the hard
work of Association Officers Fabrizio,
Gordon, Jai, the National Board and
Areas, this seems to have stopped in
2009/ 2010. With 1,308 active Tablers
in 164 Clubs (v/s 1,329 in 2009), RTSA
has stopped losing hundreds of members
a year and this is obviously very good
news. It is difficult for me to report on RTSA compared to
the other Associations in the Region given the difference in
size: RTSA represents 70% of the membership in the Region;
this is a large Association, and it operates as such. From
National Service Alliances to Area Conferences, there would
be too much to say, set aside one of the premium RT event
in the year, ARTSA (the RTSA AGM), that any decent Tabler
should have at least attended once. From a regional point of
view however, RTSA has a responsibility which maybe is not
always accepted by its Officers: Tabling in Africa is not limited
to RTSA, and as much as the Region needs RTSA participation
to its events, and its valuable participation to the Regional
Meeting, RTSA is not RT Africa. At the same time, all Associations
in Africa should pay attention to RTSA opinion as it is often
very mature and well delivered. I certainly don’t mean to be
patronising here, but RT Associations in Africa have their own
personality, often quite strong, and all can operate properly
for the sake of diversity. I feel it is important for the Region
that this is well understood, always. Long live to RTSA, an
Association which will celebrate its 60th Anniversary in 2011!
RT Zambia – 40 Age Rule/ 102 Tablers
(increasing)
There are probably not many Tablers
in this world who have never met a
Zambian Tabler! With 102 active Tablers
in 11 Clubs, RT Zambia is not only
growing fast (67 in 2008, 80 in 2009!),
this is also one of the most active in
Africa in terms of international fellowship
(as evidenced by two consecutive
fellowship awards in 2007 and 2008!).
The list of international events attended
by Zambian Tablers is impressive, and I
must say they lead by example in this department! Together
with good RT governance and leadership, you obtain an
Association which is doing wonders, in spite of tough economic
conditions prevailing in some parts of the country (like in the
Copperbelt province). RT Zambia is also very zealous when
it comes to raising funds for their local service projects, and
engaging with Associations in EMA (like RT Netherlands) in
twinning service projects. With a common border with DRC
(Democratic Republic of the Congo), RT Zambia is probably
one of our best chances to extend to another country. I am
not sure however this is on the agenda, so I just plead it
becomes one in the near future.
The end is near
It’s been a long year… With a lot of RT work, my last year in
active Tabling as I will be axed by my Table next AGM in March
2011.
I wish all the best for his year in office to my successor Ross
Crichton, who already managed to visit RT Seychelles since
he’s been elected in May! Ross, I’ll be available for you should
you request assistance of any sort and at any time.
To my partner Christelle, who has been partaking to a lot of
RT activities for the last
2 years - but who’s also
been waiting for me
sometimes: 2011
will be YOUR
Dear Rikus, Steve, Gilles, Daniel,
Dear fellow Tablers,
Adopt, Adapt, Improve
It was an absolute honour and a privilege to
serve on the Round Table International Board,
particularly this year as the RT Asia Pacific
Chairman, simply because I have served with
friends who have made a difference in my life. It
has been a challenging yet rewarding year for me
personally, working through a very difficult stage
in my life and all I can say is it has been a very
satisfying and fulfilling journey.
Firstly, let me express the friendship we share
with one another, which could be compared to
long lost brothers who were put together last
year and given a child
to Adopt, Adapt and
Improve. This is the
best way I can express
Round Table which has
grown and believed to
be the best social
networking on offer
with 33,000 members
who are friends.
Regional Travel
I have been fortunate to be able to travel to
other countries to experience the warmth and
friendship none can compare. You have to live it
to experience it.
My main focus was to
try and improve the
inter-tabling activities
between the countries
in the Region, and I am
happy to note that the
active Associations
within the Region are
developing this
concept. So far India,
Nepal and Sri Lanka
have shown a keen
interest and have
progressed by inter-tabling fellowship and community service
activities.
Tabling has taken me this year to countries within the Region
and to the rest of the world on Regional and official RTI work.
Alkmaar, Dubai, India, Singapore, South Africa, Nepal, are some
of the countries I have had the privilege of visiting. Balancing
my official function as the Treasurer and my personal work
has taken up the rest of my time.
Region Status
I personally have mixed
feeling about the ASPA
Region.
Some Associations are
growing from strength
to strength. India and
Nepal have shown a
growth in Table
numbers, and Sri Lanka
has shown
commitment by
hosting a Regional
meeting just
concluded.
Hong Kong, New
Zealand and Bangladesh have not communicated so far but
seem to have their fundraising and fellowship activities within
their individual Tables.
Philippines, Singapore, and the new addition Thailand, will have
to be looked at seriously if the Round Table movement to
continue in these countries.
Taking Tabling forward within the Region, it is my wish that
any Association that
wishes to Charter new
Tables should have a
minimum three-year
plan when chartering
Tables. Further, I feel
that they should get
the help of the
Associations in
neighbouring countries
to help in monitoring
the progress. To this
end sufficient funds
should be allocated for
this purpose.
Closing
I would like to thank all the members of the
Board of Round Table Sri Lanka for the support
extended to me during my tenor, and to my
friends on the Round Table International Board
2009/ 2010 for extending their support to me
though out the year.
Finally, I must thank Thushi, my soul mate and
wife, who supported and encouraged me
throughout this year and made it possible for
me to go on living Round Table.
official metered taxis outside all the terminals.
The approximate cost is 150AED (USD 40) for
a one way journey to the Jebel Ali Hotel. Please
note if taking a taxi, make sure it is a metered
official taxi. There are rogue taxis which try to
Room Rates and Sharing (Closes 23:30
UAE local time on Sept 26th)
The room rates increased on August 1st. Any persons who
booked in before this date should have been contacted by
the hotel in order to pay at the pre-August 1st rate. If you
booked in and have not
yet paid then your rate
will have increased to
the post July 31st rate.
There are a number of
persons who have
booked a room at the
hotel and appear to
have a spare bed in
their room. If they
would like to contact
us wanting to split the
room cost by sharing
the room, we will
endeavour to help by
matching them to
anybody who wants to book a shared room.
However we cannot guarantee that a room
will come available. This offer is only applicable
to new hotel bookings and depends on availability
of persons wishing to share their booked and
paid room.
Attendance
Is your Organisation going to be represented
If not, why not The conference is going to be
Big…VERY BIG. It will be such a shame if your
organization was not present. Check the website
to see if somebody from your country is
coming…
RTI Football (5-a-side on grass pitch
by the RTI Bar – and with a referee)
Don’t forget your kit because we will organise
the usual RTIWM ‘Sporting Event’ into a mini
World Cup running during the conference.
You are best using flat soled trainers as the
ground is quite hard and there are concrete
edges to the pitch!
There will be 2 groups, 4 teams in each group.
Each team will be made up of several RT
organisations depending on attending
numbers (eg RTBI + RT NZ + RT Nepal +
RT Kuwait). The Semi Finals and Final will
be just before the Beach BBQ.
Kids Club
Don’t forget that Kids Club will be open until
11pm every night!!! It has great events and
activities. Check out the website for the
updates activities!
Stay before or after the conference
Despite the room rates going up, we have
managed to keep the additional day cost to
100 AED per night per room on top of the
hotel room rate… now that is amazing. Use
this to have a holiday.
Visas – Very Important
Do you need a visa If so please contact the
Lady Chocolate –
LC International
AGM in Bruges,
Belgium
Women, Children, Fellowship… And
some illness.
I was off to a meeting of over 1000
women and NO men! What was I
to expect Will I be attacked by a
sex hungry mob or will I be treated
like one of them With some luck,
it would be somewhere in-between!
My personal goal for this trip was
two-fold; firstly, to continue
strengthening the ties with Ladies Circle and also to use this
opportunity to get to know my future VP Stijn, him being the
only candidate for the post this year. I managed to hit both
goals and also some more.
Stijn must have been concerned when he met me at Brussels
airport surrounded by three children. I met a friend who was
travelling alone with her children so I offered to help control
them till we met their father; a new experience for me! Stijn
and I drove straight to the welcome party in the centre of
Bruges. Due to the timing of my flight, we were too late for
the traditional welcome parade
which unfortunately was slightly
spoilt due to the rain. This however
did not spoil the party which was
a great event with live
entertainment. I had the opportunity
to be introduced to a lot of ladies...
And a few husbands. The party
continued till the early hours of the
morning. Stijn and I needed to drive
45 minutes out of Bruges to get to
his house, so we headed home at
around 1am, giving a lift to a few
of the ladies walking to their hotel.
It was back to Bruges first thing in
the morning to attend the AGM.
What an experience to be speaking
in front of over 1000 women and
feeling that they actually appreciated the message! I encouraged
them to vote in favour of including Round Table in their Aims
and Objects, something they actually did later on in the
meeting. I also advised them to do their best to help Agora
and Tangent clubs to iron out their differences so that finally
we can actually succeed in achieving our ‘4 Clubs 1 Vision’
goal. I mentioned the publicity campaign we are working on
Side-by-Side, taking banners of both clubs up the highest peaks
around the world. The next peak will hopefully be the Burj
Khalifa during our AGM, so I invited them to join us in Dubai
to enjoy our AGM. Lastly I looked forward to the day when
we could organise joint AGMs with less segregation between
our two groups.
After that, we left the ladies continue with their meeting and
headed out to meet up with Jari Heikka and his two children
and Stijn’s father, our guide for the day. Our tour of Bruges
started with Jari needing to clean the car after his son felt
sick whilst driving from the airport! We then headed off to
visit this beautiful city. After a great lunch of Mussels and Fries,
we headed off to Stijn’s
house to prepare for
a proper Tabler’s BBQ.
We needed to collect
the food and supplies
that Sophie, Stijn’s wife,
had ordered first. She
must have thought the
whole RTI Board and
their families were
coming to dinner; we
barely managed to fit
all the supplies in the
car, and this was a
Range Rover! It turned
out to be a great evening with past RT Belgium
Secretary Yves Lecocq joining us. Another great
day ended with lots of great champagne and
exceptional wines from Stijn’s cellar.
Saturday was a free day till the gala in the evening
so we headed off to a park with lots of animals
and things to do for the children. So us, three
men and five children, spent a great day walking
around the park visiting the sites and discussing
Round Table over a few beers. For a change it
turned out to be a beautiful day without any rain.
On the way back Stijn was crazy enough to trust
me with driving his car, I finally got to drive a
Range Rover after selling mine 18 years ago! We
had to be back home early for me to get ready
to go to the Gala Dinner. I had the pleasure of
being driven there by five beautiful ladies all
chattering away in French thinking I could not
understand them... Luckily they only said good
things about me!
The Gala dinner was held in a massive shed that
was previously used as a market place. You would
never have noticed, thanks to the way it was all
set up. We started off the evening with a small
reception for the invited guests. Here, I realised
that I was not going to be the only male participant
but there were another FIVE, including RT Belgium
President Robby Bocklandt and past RT Sweden
President Rikard Arenius (now LCI President
Malin’s partner... talk about Side-by-Side!).
We were seated at a long table in the middle of
the hall surrounded by lots of other tables full
of the women. It was a great evening with a few
great speeches and lots of good food, fun and
entertainment. Poor outgoing LCI President
Kjersti had to have her food warmed at least 4
times before she
managed to sit down
long enough to eat it!
I had the opportunity
to sit next to incoming
LCI President Malin, so
we managed to talk
about certain issues
and I feel we can really
work well together in
the coming year –
especially after she
gives birth in
December! By the
time the formalities
Continued on next page... 17
were over and we
finished eating, it was
time for the partners
of the Circlers to
come into the hall and
entertain us with a
Blues Brothers
number. From then on
the night becomes
quite a blur, with lots
of dancing and
obviously drinking and
general mayhem. The
night was however far
from over when we
decided to leave at 3 am only to find a puncture in our car!
Me being the only man in the car, I offered to change the
wheel, only to find the nuts so hard I could not remove them!
Very embarrassing!! We finally made it home at 6am after
calling a mechanic to come to the rescue.
The last day of my Belgian adventure saw us heading to an
old Tabler’s house for a very very long lunch. On arrival we
had to deal with another sick child, this time Jari’s daughter!
We drank around 8 bottles of champagne and numerous
bottles of wine, and by the time we had to leave for the
airport at 5.30pm, we
had still not finished
our main course! A
great day in great
company!
I would like to thank
outgoing LCI President
Kjersti for her
invitation, and
congratulate the
organising team of LC
Belgium for a fantastic
event that managed to
exceed all my
expectations. A special thanks also to Stijn and
his wife Sophie for their exceptional hospitality.
Oh, and by the way... As for the sick children,
they got better, but Jari and I got sick on the
plane home whilst Stijn got sick the next day!
No matter, we still had a great time mixing
Tabling with Circling with Family time, Perfect!
Yours in International Tabling,
ISTANBUL
Istanbul, the only city in the world built on two continents,
and has a long history of over 2500 years. Being one of the
oldest cities in the world, Istanbul was the capital of The
Roman Empire between 330 – 395; capital of The Eastern
Roman Empire between 395 - 1204 and 1261 – 1453; capital
of The Latin Empire between 1204 - 1261 and finally was the
capital of The Ottoman Empire between 1453 – 1922, and
more than 120 emperors ruled their country from this city.
The part of the city built on a peninsula consisting of the
Marmara Sea, Bosphorus and Golden Horn (Halic) is called
as the European Side or Rumeli Side, and the Asian part is
called as the Asian Side. Istanbul is located in the northwest
of Turkey due to the location of the peninsula at which it is
situated.
Istanbul is the most crowded city of Turkey with a population
of over 13 million and it is the largest city of Europe and the
5th largest city of the world. There are lots of Christians and
Jews living in harmony
in this crowded city. At
this point, “The Greek
O r t h o d o x
Patriarchate” deemed
as the center of
O r t h o d o x
Patriarchates along
with a number of
churches and around
20 synagogues exist in
the city.
Since it is a junction of
land and maritime
trade, Istanbul is the capital of economy and
industry. Visited by nearly 3 million tourists
annually, Istanbul has a significant position in
terms of tourism. Istanbul has been designated
as the European Capital of Culture in 2010 with
its long history and thousands of historical
monuments left from various civilizations it
harboured. These historical monuments include
thousands of Mosques, Palaces, Squares, Bazaars
and Monuments such as The Topkapı Palace,
Sultan Ahmed Mosque and Hagia Sophia Museum.
There are lots of night
clubs, bars and
restaurants in this 24-
hour city. Taksim,
Beyo•u, Etiler and
Ortaköy are among
the top choices for
entertainment in the
city full of alternative
venues for
entertainment.
