Nandan condenses his vision for the Club into three ‘C’s:
Consolidation with continuity, Communication & Commitment
Nandan Damani conducted his first
formal meeting as President of the
Rotary Club of Bombay for 2009-
2010 in the glittering Crystal Room of
the Taj Mahal Hotel on the afternoon
of Tuesday, July 7, 2009.
The chandeliered Crystal Room
saw a large turnout of District Officers,
Rotary dignitaries, visiting Rotarians,
members, Rotaryanns and guests,
including a galaxy of eminent citizens,
some of them Honorary members of
the Rotary Club of Bombay.
When Ashish Vaid, who relinquished
office at the stroke of midnight
on June 30, affixed the President’s
pin on his successor’s lapel, the assembled
gathering broke out in spontaneous
applause at the smooth transition
and change of guard.
The chief guest on the occasion,
District Governor T.N. Subramanian,
popularly known as Raju, pinned a
President’s badge on Nandan’s jacket
and set the tone for the day’s programme.
After welcoming the gathering,
Nandan, in a rare innovation, felicitated
both the members and the
spouses celebrating their birthday during
the week. He hoped that this would
lead to greater involvement of members’
families in the Club’s activities.
He then thanked, honoured and felicitated
his predecessor, IPP Ashish
Vaid, lauding his contributions to the
Club. (Details on Page 3)
Following the formal installation of
Mr. Venugopal Dhoot as an Honorary
member (See Page 3), Nandan
got down to the task of expounding
his vision and throwing some light on
his plans for the year.
At the outset, he thanked his fellow
members for reposing faith in him
and elevating him to the post of President
of a prestigious Club like the
Rotary Club of Bombay.
“I thank you for giving me this opportunity
to lead our Club. I also look
forward to learn, to share and to serve
with you. It is indeed a privilege to be
in a position whereby one can bring a
positive change in the lives of many.
Your support in my endeavours will
be critical to achieve success.”
Several prominent citizens of Bombay are now Honorary members of the Club. Among those who can be spotted
(from left in these two photographs) are President-Elect Pradeep Saxena, Honorary member Mr. Ajay Piramal,
President Nandan, Honorary member Mr. Venugopal Dhoot, Honorary member Ms Rajashree Birla, PP Kalpana
Munshi and IPP Ashish Vaid. Members will recall that the Governor of Maharashtra, H.E. Mr. S.C. Jamir, was
installed as an Honorary member on June 22
The future of our Club is safe in your hands. IPP Ashish Vaid pins his
successor Nandan Damani as President of the Rotary Club of Bombay
Nandan said his vision for Rotary
could be condensed in three ‘C’s: Consolidation
with continuity; Communication;
and Commitment.
Starting with Consolidation with
continuity, he said the Committees
for the year had been decided upon
after discussions with President-Elect
Pradeep Saxena and President-Nominee
Paul George and to ensure that all
efforts were directed towards longterm
goals.
The focus would be on continuing
the projects started by IPP Ashish,
viz., the Junior College at Talwada,
the Bhavishya-Yaan project, the Vocational
Centre and the Old Age Home,
and to take them forward.
“We hope that in future these
projects will also become jewels in the
Rotary crown, just as the Hasanali
Tobaccowala Eye Centre and the Ajit
Deshpande Medical Centre at Talwada
are our Kohinoor projects today.”
This is a Club that one comes to, to learn how to
serve; it’s an institution by itself, says DG Raju
The Rotary Club of Bombay was
the recipient of the ultimate encomium
at the first meeting of the
new Rotary year 2009-2010.
It came when District Governor
T.N. Subramanian Raju, who was the
chief guest, said that “this is not a
Club that one comes to, to tell you
how to serve. This is a Club one
comes to, to learn how to serve”.
“As Governor, I strongly believe
that I am just one among 6,100
Rotarians who are humble servants
of Rotary, seeking to lend a hand with
compassion and with a large heart, to
touch the millions who can see no
light in their days. When we wear the
(Rotary) pin, that’s exactly what we
do.
“And a shining example of wonderful
service is the Rotary Club of
Bombay and the multifarious projects
that it executes year after year.
Whether or not there is a Governor
around is irrelevant, because I think
this Club is an institution by itself...
doing yeoman’s service to Rotary.”
The DG, who revealed that he was
attending his 34th installation meeting
of the year, said that this one was
far different from all the others because
it involved the installation of a
very simple and humble, but committed
and dedicated man as President
of a prestigious Club.
The Club belonged to a rare league
– it was one of the top 50 Clubs in
the world with the largest membership
in Rotary.
Several illustrious leaders had led
the Club with distinction, some of
whom had gone on to lead the District
and also served Rotary International
in various capacities.
Page 2, THE GATEWAY, 14th July, 2009
This Club has a rich tradition of throwing up one outstanding leader after another. District Governor Raju
Subramanian address the Club. (Right) You must keep smiling right through the year. District Governor Raju pins
a badge on President Nandan Damani’s jacket
Some of the names that he recalled
were those of Sir Phiroze Sethna, Sir
Shapoorjee Billimoria, Mohamed
Hasham Premji, Sohrab Vimadalal,
Dr. Shantilal Mehta, Ambalal Kilachand
and Naval Ardeshir.
Thus, the DG said, the Club had a
rich tradition of throwing up one outstanding
leader after another. In fact,
he added, “the leadership and the service
that this Club gives to Rotary is
something that every Club must look
up to and look forward to in order to
understand what service means and
to wear the (Rotary) pin with pride”.
Raju lauded the “wonderful
year”, 2008-2009, under IPP
Ashish Vaid and complimented
him and Rotaryann Gopi “for a
terrific year”.
Continuing his inspiring address,
DG Raju said that the road to success
was long and winding, with many
paths to cross.
“Take the one which is the shortest,
but always with value, with respect
and with ethics as you follow
that path. People may follow the path
that is the longest but with no mercy
and respect.
“Each day is a new beginning. As
Rotarians, remember to serve the
people who require your service and
extend a hand to do so.
“Always respect others. Show
mercy and pride in whatever you
do. Give all that you can with
good deeds and actions and I am
sure God will always be on our
side, for we serve selflessly with
no reward for ourselves but to
benefit those whom we seek to
serve.”
(Continued on Page 8)
A distinguished gathering, indeed. Several PDGs, including Manibhai Doshi, Dr. Badar Maskati, Aziz Visram,
Dr. J.T. Vyas, Nitin Mangaldas and Bansi Dhurandhar, attended the meeting. Also present were DGE Jayant
Kulkarni and DGN Vijay Jalan
M/s Raju and
Jimmy have
done it –
once again!
Alittle-known fact came to the
fore at the last meeting when
District Governor Raju Subramanian
was the chief guest.
Raju, a senior advocate by profession,
and Jimmy Pochkhanawalla,
also a senior advocate and
senior member of the Club, had
won a famous victory just a day
earlier (on July 6) when the
Bombay High Court delivered a
resounding verdict against the
Maharashtra government’s plan to
restrict admissions to junior colleges.
The government had proposed
a 90:10 formula to reserve 90% of
seats for students of the SSC
Board and 10% for students of all
other boards. The court set it aside
as unconstitutional.
Among the galaxy of senior
counsel who challenged this move
as illegal were DG Raju and Jimmy.
They offered their services free of
charge even though they were engaged
for six days.
Jimmy informed The Gateway
that he and Raju had similarly argued
and won in the Supreme Court
of India the well-known “Bombay
Hawkers Case”.

New Honorary member
Welcome to the Rotary Club of
Bombay! Mr. Venugopal Dhoot,
who was inducted as an Honorary
member of the Rotary Club of
Bombay at the last meeting, is
‘pinned’ by District Governor Raju
Subramanian as President Nandan
Damani looks on. In the picture at
right, Mr. Dhoot addresses the
Club. ‘It is a privilege to be
associated with a Club that has
distinguished itself by undertaking
extraordinary activities in Bombay
and in other parts of India,’
Mr. Dhoot stated
FULSOME PRAISE FOR IPP ASHISH VAID
Immediate Past District Governor
Bansi Dhurandhar joined President
Nandan Damani in showering fulsome
praise on Ashish Vaid, Immediate
Past President of the Rotary
Club of Bombay.
Speaking at the last meeting,
Nandan said the Rotary year 2008-
2009 would be remembered for the
manner in which Ashish had led the
Club – “efficiently, effectively and
with utmost humility, taking it to new
heights”.
Not only had he laid the foundation
for a Junior College at Talwada
and started the eminently successful
Bhavishya-Yaan pilot project to impart
computer literacy to children at
the Dr. Ambedkar Municipal School
in Worli, he had also committed to
the building of a Vocational Centre at
Goregaon and an Old Age Home in
Ambernath.
Apart from this, Ashish had registered
the highest-ever collection
through the Club’s annual fundraising
programme. “And this was
done in a year of global recession!”
Nandan added that Ashish’s positive
approach and modest nature endeared
him to one and all and he knew
that he could count on Ashish’s support
in his term as President.
He presented Ashish with a bound
set of the official newsletter The Gateway
published in 2008-2009 and an
album of photographs that captured
his memorable year as President of
the Rotary Club of Bombay.
Nandan then affixed an IPP pin on
Ashish’s lapel and offered him a beautiful
silver salver.
IPDG Bansi Dhurandhar stood up,
as if on cue, and presented the IPP
with two mementos, a Citation and a
District Excellence Award, for his outstanding
leadership and for upholding
Rotary values and principles.
Bansi added that Ashish was the
best President in District 3140 in
the year gone by.
The citation that he presented to
him read as follows: “Rotary International
District 3140 Excellence
Award to President Ashish Vaid of
the Rotary Club of Bombay, for excelling
in all Avenues of Service.”
Sd/-
Bansi Dhurandhar
District Governor, 2008-2009
Making a brief speech, IPP Ashish
thanked Bansi, President Nandan and
all the members of the Club.
He said he was confident that every
Rotarian would do exactly as exhorted
by this year’s Theme, The
Future of Rotary is in Your Hands,
and provide maximum care to those
who were less fortunate.
“President Nandan is a seasoned
Rotarian who has headed numerous
Committees in the last few years and
has been regularly attending all meetings
of the Office-Bearers and of the
Directors; thus he is familiar with the
working of our Club.
“I am sure he will win everyone’s
heart with his warm-heartedness and
take our Club to greater heights in
terms of social service, fellowship and
weekly programmes. He has chosen
his team and his Chairmen very carefully
and we can look forward to serious
action as the Club is so wellgeared
to accomplish.”
Ashish said that Gopi and he
wished to thank all the members of
the Club for the love, blessings and
support that they had showered upon
them in abundance and which had
A weighty compliment, indeed. IPP Ashish Vaid balances the bound copies of ‘The Gateway’, an album of
photographs and the silver salver presented to him as mementos by President Nandan Damani at the last meeting.
In the picture at right, IPDG Bansi Dhurandhar presents him with the District Excellence Award for outstanding
leadership and for upholding Rotary values and principles
helped them sail through the year with
a lot of fun.
“We now pledge our unstinted
support to President Nandan, First
Lady Shreelekha and Nandan’s team
to keep the flag of the Rotary Club of
Bombay flying high and ensuring that
we remain the best,” Ashish added.
He then pinned the President’s
badge on Nandan.
The year has been planned with many surprises; the more
you get involved, the more fun it will be, says Nandan
(Continued from Page 1)
As for Communication, Nandan
said Rotary without communication
was akin to a man winking at a beautiful
girl in the dark. He knew what he
was doing, but she did not. Communication
was the single most important
factor that had changed the world in
the last decade. It had transformed
lives and brought everyone closer.
The Club’s web page, too, had been
redesigned to suit the needs of the day.
He requested all Committee Chairmen,
Rotaractors and Interactors to
provide information and photographs
about the work being done by them so
that it could be immediately uploaded
on to the website. This would be a
source of inspiration and pride to all
members.
Besides, since the website could be
accessed by all, it would help spread
awareness about the Club’s activities
to the outside world.
“The internet has been carefully
chosen as our preferred channel of
communication as it is the second fastest
method to spread information. The
fastest one still remains the same, viz.,
‘to tell a woman’,” Nandan added,
tongue firmly in cheek.
Finally, he turned to the third ‘C’,
Commitment.
The first commitment was towards
Rotary itself, starting with attendance,
and every Rotarian was very particular
about this. When he was chosen President-Elect,
the one question asked of
him was, “Who is your Attendance
Committee Chairman going to be” This
indicated the seriousness with which
members viewed attendance. Now, he
looked forward to seeing his fellow
Rotarians at all Club programmes.
The year is going to be full of surprises. President Nandan offers a tantalising glimpse into the year ahead but does
not elaborate. (Right) And this is a token cheque for the District Welfare Fund from the Rotary Club of Bombay.
Nandan hands over an envelope to DG Raju
“We are looking forward to great
Fellowship and even greater bonds
amongst us. The year has been planned
with many surprises; the more you
get involved, the more fun it will be.”
Nandan requested every member
to pledge time, money and effort
and to contribute constructively
towards the Club and its projects.
He also requested every Rotarian
to become a Paul Harris Fellow and
to contribute to The Rotary Foundation.
Turning to the District Thrust areas,
the President said that like other
Clubs, the Rotary Club of Bombay
also had a commitment towards these.
The Thrust areas this year were:
(1) Generating awareness and undertaking
measures towards better
water management and reducing global
warming;
(2) Working for inclusion and empowerment
of the disabled;
(3) Collaborating with DISHA, a
movement aimed at bringing about a
meaningful change in the lives of the
underprivileged; and
(4) Rotarians’ personal commitment
to ethics and moral values to be
practised in their personal and professional
lives.
Nandan urged every Rotarian to
adopt one of these Thrust areas and
to devote their time and talent towards
it.
“Many hands make work light.
Together, we can easily dream the impossible
dream, right the ‘unrightable’
wrong and reach the unreachable star.
The Rotary Theme for the year is The
Future of Rotary is in Your Hands.
Let us all join hands and work towards
a bigger, better and brighter Rotary.”
Nandan added that ten members of
the Rotary Club of Bombay had been
chosen by the District Governor to
serve on his team. They were: Past
Presidents Arvind Jolly, Rajnikant
Reshamwala, Sandip Agarwalla, Kalpana
Munshi, Gul Kripalani and Dr.
Rumi Jehangir, President-Nominee
Paul George, Shailesh Haribhakti,
Deepak Kapadia and Sitaram Shah. He
congratulated them on their selection.
After naming the Office-Bearers
and the Board of Directors, Nandan
handed over the proceedings to Hon.
Secretary Shivkumar Israni who read
out the names of all Committee Chairpersons.
Every Office-Bearer, Director
and Chairperson was requested to
stand and be recognised.
Finally, Nandan presented a cheque
for the District Welfare Fund to the
District Governor.
This one is for you. Assistant Governor Dr. Quresh Maskati presents to
President Nandan a Certificate lauding the Club’s commitment to The
Rotary Foundation
Full quorum. President Nandan Damani welcomes the gathering at the first
meeting of the new Rotary year, which was held on July 7. Others in the
photograph (from left) are Hon. Treasurer Ishraq Contractor, President-
Nominee Paul George, Honorary member Mr. Venugopal Dhoot, IPP Ashish
Vaid, DG Raju Subramanian, Hon. Secretary Shivkumar Irani, Assistant
Governor Dr. Quresh Maskati, President-Elect Pradeep Saxena, District
Group Coordinator PP Anil Chopra and Hon. Joint Secretary Nirav Shah
DG Raju says he will always be around
‘as an ordinary servant of Rotary’
(Continued from Page 2)
DG Raju said that in a service
organisation such as Rotary (which
included leaders from various walks
of life, whether industry, trade or profession),
it was best if the leaders
(such as the President) welcomed all
members with a “soft heart” so that
when they worked together they
would be able to far exceed their goals.
Leadership in Rotary was neither
“I” nor “You”, it was always “We”
and “Us”. Team effort alone could
ensure the success of a service organisation
such as Rotary because every
Rotarian’s heart “ticks for service”.
“The ladies and gentlemen who
form part of our wonderful organisation
are people we must respect
the most as they follow us in the path
of service.”
Finally, DG Raju had a bit of advice
for President Nandan. He said,
“You have a charming smile; keep that
Happy Birthday
