Hi there,
As I haven’t had any reports, stories, tips, or lies to publish in the
magazine I assume that no one managed to get out on opening morning. At
the time I am writing this it looks as though the magazine may be shorter
than the usual 16 pages as I am not getting a lot in the way of articles,
photos etc. from members. It’s your magazine, and as I said in the last
editorial I have no intention of filling it with articles you can all access via
the internet. If articles are not forthcoming the magazine will turn into a
simple newsletter. If you feel your writing skills are not up to scratch I am
happy to pad out the story, but I can’t fill up the magazine without
contributions.
As yet I haven’t even purchased a license but will endeavor to rectify that
this weekend. I am off down to the West Coast on Monday so will hopefully
fit in a few casts while I am there, last time I managed a nice little rugby
ball shaped brown from lake Brunner. Fingers crossed!

Presidents Report
I hope most members have made it out onto some of our local streams and
had a bit of luck in this early part of the season. Apart from getting blown
around a good bit of the time, I have managed a few fish, all of varying
size but all in good condition. Hope you all have had similar experience with
the fish condition.
Our next meeting is 5 November at the Game Farm at the earlier
start time of 6:30. Shaun ,the guide and feather merchant rep from
Taupo will be joining us again to give a few tips. The folk at Fish and Game
have given permission for us to use the pond for casting with barbless
hooks, so the earlier start time is proposed to make use of the daylight.
The formal part of the meeting will follow and we also plan to cook a few
sausages and have usual refreshments available. So, if you are like me and
could use a little help getting that cast just right, bring your gear along to
the November meeting and make the most of this opportunity.
Could we also please have trophies returned as soon as possible, the
committee need time to get the new engraving completed prior to the
Xmas meeting and trophy presentation.
Finally remember to email in your photos if you want to be considered for
the catch and release trophy.

Joke
A man procured a licence to fish Tutira but on reading the regulations
found there was a limit of 4 fish per day. For the first season this wasn’t a
problem as he caught few fish, but as his skill levels improved he managed
to occasionally reach his limit. Then one day the fishing was really going off
and he reached the limit by midday. He couldn’t bring himself to stop and
after his 12 th fish he was approached by a ranger, his gear was seized and
he was summonsed to court.
The magistrate listened to the evidence from the prosecution, and was
appalled at the blatant disregard for the rules. The fisherman was fined
$150, lost most of his gear and was asked by the magistrate if he had
anything to say.
“No” said the fisherman, but I wonder if I can have a copy of the court
records to show my friends!
Te Puia Back Country Trip, December 8/9 th .

There is still a place left on the trip in to Te Puia Lodge, toward the top of
the Mohaka River. The trip will involve about a 2 – 3 hour walk on a good
track to the Te Puia Hut (depending on how fast you walk, and how often
you stop to look for fish, or to fish). There are a couple of small hills on
the way but the trip is within the capabilities of anyone with a reasonable
degree of fitness. There are plenty of places to fish on the way in and
good water is available close to the hut. From the hut it is another hour
upriver to the Hot Springs where you can soak in a hot tub, or fish some
more.
The date will be 8/9 th December. I have some spare tramping gear if
anyone is lacking anything. Bring your camera and a wide angle lens - the
trout are bigger up that way!

Subject: Fish and Game Elections
New Zealand's trout fishing is a public sport, available regardless of
wealth or income. This contrasts to other countries where the best trout
or salmon fishing is only accessible by paying huge fees. Here, charging
fees for freshwater fishing rights is prohibited by Acts of Parliament.
New Zealand’s egalitarian public ownership of its sports fishing is unique.
However that could be lost or eroded if the pressure for private
profiteering and ownership gained favour.
Fish and Game council elections are being held in November. Unfortunately
in some regional fish and game councils in the past, angler apathy has been
rife with even insufficient candidates to require elections while overall,
voter turnout was poor.
Apathy dominates as shown by one million who did not vote last general
election.
Anglers must shed apathy and consider standing, or nominate individuals
for their fish and game council. All anglers should sign their new trout
licence twice to qualify to vote and then vote in November. Alternatively
anyone failing to sign for the electoral roll when purchasing a new licence,
can get an enrolment form on Fish and Game's website. Closing date is 19
October.
Applications to join the club have been received from Rick Wentz,
Harvey Burgess and Neil Drew, if anyone has any objections to these
gentlemen joining the club please contact one of the committee
members.

Casting For Recovery 2013
C.F.R is for breast cancer survivors. The retreats are to pamper and teach
fly fishing. Fly fishing and the casting motion provide a movement for joint
and soft tissue stretching. The dynamics of fly fishing relieves everyday
stress and provides a sense of calm. C.F.R retreats provide an opportunity
for social support and spending time in a beautiful natural setting. The
focus of the retreat is wellness.
C.F.R is holding three retreats this year and our one will be at Castlerock
at Wharepapa South in the Waikato on February 22/24 th . The lodge is set
in a beautiful area and we also have the luxury of a pool and spa.Our first
Retreat is in Turangi, the second Te Awamutu and the third Nelson.
Any age can apply for this retreat you can be a 10 year survivor or still be
going through treatment.
