Recognizing Our Strengths.
by Rod Mason, President & CEO
Back in grade school, there was a special award that the
teacher gave one student a week. Each week there was the
special designation of "student of the week." This recognition
was the ultimate motivation for a student. You were the
"special person" for a whole week. Not only was your name
prominently placed in the classroom for all to see but you also
were the teacher's helper who handed out papers, sat in a
special spot, read to the class, was the first in line (which
means you were the first to everything including the first out
to recess!) and assist the teacher in any special missions like
taking a message to the office or, on special occasions, you
may have been the renowned glorified tattletale by serving as
the classroom monitor (which may or may not have been part
of the award!). Recognition of this type would aid in the development of the student's
leadership skills, academic focus and classroom loyalty.
We human beings like to be recognized. By human nature, this is a natural motivator. It is a
reinforcement of accomplishment and deepens emotional ties that build commitment.
Additionally, it is good to note these recognizable milestones organizationally as it truly
shows excellence as it occurs. And, I must say, it occurs regularly on the Menno Haven
campuses. This Connections should actually be over a hundred pages long! I sincerely
believe Menno Haven is made up of a
community of people who each deserve an
award. However, as it goes, we can only
recognize so many people in a year's time.
This past year has been a good year! We
have had abundant blessings, plenty of
Many who work at Menno Haven say that they are here because they are fulfilling a "calling"
from God to be here or to care for others. A very smart man (Albert Einstein) once said that
"A life lived for others, is the only life worth living." It is amazing the rewards that we as
employees receive as we "naturally" go through our daily lives working and trying to make a
difference every day for someone else.
LeadingAgePA
Caregiver of the Year
LeadingAgePA, formerly PANPHA, recognizes leaders in the retirement
industry each year at an annual meeting in Hershey, PA. In 2012, Jeff
Diehl, nursing assistant at Menno Village, took the stage beside
LeadingAgePA Board Chair Phil DeBaun, to be recognized as Caregiver
of the Year. The recognition, though a surprise to Diehl, came as no
surprise to those who work beside him on the nursing floor where his
care and concern for residents is evident.
3
Recommendations for Diehl as the award recipient came from
numerous levels of management at Menno Haven and included notes
from residents and resident families detailing his work. With nearly
400 organizations associated and eligible to nominate employees for
this award, it has been held as quite an honor for both Diehl and
Menno Haven at large.
“We are excited to be able to celebrate all of Jeff’s accomplishments
in the field of nursing and especially pleased that he has been
recognized statewide for his excellent caregiving abilities,” explained
Rod Mason, Menno Haven President & CEO. In addition, Diehl will
celebrate his 28th year with Menno Haven in a few short months.
Menno Haven recognized three other individuals who were
nominated at the state level as representing excellence in their
efforts. Sandy Myers from maintenance was nominated for
Caregiver of the Year – Non nursing; Vicky Hawbaker from the
Menno Village Nursing Center was nominated for Caregiver of the
Year, and Scott Kane who is a volunteer was nominated for his very
special and dedicated volunteering efforts.
PMA Superior Safety Award
In 2012, Menno Haven was once again the recipient of the PMA Superior Safety
Award an award bestowed by PMA Insurance Group each year to those
organizations who have provided care without accident. This year, the award
possible to work together in the hectic day to day world of senior care for 365
consecutive days without a single lost time accident.
The fourth department to be recognized, Village Square Personal Care, was a
recipient for the second year. This extended their record to 757 consecutive days
without a lost time accident.
departments is a recipient of the PMA Superior Safety Award.
Introducing Menno Haven’s BEST Program
Remember the FROG: Forming Relationships Of Gratitude.
by Denton Hartman, Director of Staff Development
By some reports, our system of Senior
Care in America is infected with a
disease. Some of the symptoms are staff
turnover, heightened stress levels, and
employees at all levels feeling bullied or
burned out. The disease that is causing
this breakdown has been diagnosed as
"incivility.” Menno Haven has performed
better than most in this infected
environment, but to create an even
better future, the B.E.S.T. Program at
Menno Haven was launched in 2012.
B.E.S.T. is an acronym for Building
Employee Satisfaction Together. One of
the founding principles of the program is
that satisfaction at work is derived from
relationships primarily relationships
with supervisors and coworkers.
Another acronym that is part of the
B.E.S.T program helps us all to remember
the connection between work
relationships and satisfaction with our
workplace. That acronym is F.R.O.G.
which stands for Forming Relationships
Of Gratitude.
Research has shown that job satisfaction
is almost always derived from an
employee's belief that the supervisor
cares about him or her as a person,
working with a group of people that can
be trusted and to whom he or she feels
connected, and being a part of something
that is bigger than he or she is. Two of
these three drivers of satisfaction occur
within the context of relationships.
The long term goal of the B.E.S.T.
Program at Menno Haven is to provide
staff in all departments and on all shifts
ongoing opportunities to strengthen their
relationships with each other. Through
supervisor led circle discussions, different
aspects of healthy, productive
relationships are discussed. A plan to
commit to relating to each other
positively is agreed upon.
The "disease"
that some
believe has
infected Senior
Care may have
the potential to
debilitate the
system. At
Menno Haven
we believe that the best medicine is
within us and our relationships. We all
seek satisfaction through our work and
that satisfaction is directly connected to
our relationships with those with whom
we work.
That is the Big Idea behind the B.E.S.T.
Program at Menno Haven. Becoming the
B.E.S.T. is a journey that we have begun
in 2012 and will lead us into a future that
is the best.

Residents Make their Mark with
MEMORIES IN THE MAKING
Two years ago, Life Enrichment staff on our campuses caught wind of a
new initiative for dementia patients. It was a way to “think outside of the
box” and reach the residents who most often seem unreachable.
After intense training and preparation, the team began to work with
residents in Personal Care and Nursing on the Alzheimer’s Association’s
Memories in the Making® initiative, allowing them to express themselves
with paints, paper, and canvas a medium many of them had never laid
a hand on.
“A few of our residents are experienced artists,” explained Katie
Ackerman, director of life enrichment at Menno Haven. “They often try
to recreate scenes they have created in the past or they take time to explain
the techniques they are using. Either way, they are attempting to express
themselves and to connect, and that, in itself, is a success.”
Started in 1986 by a family member of an alzheimer’s patient, the Memories in
the Making® Art program proves value in the creative process of making the art
and expressing feelings and emotions trapped inside. The ensuing sense of
accomplishment brings renewed joy and selfrespect to the patient.
The initiative is now an international sensation with more than 4,000 participants
weekly; 300 of them submitting artwork to feature in the Alzheimer’s Association
publications and exhibits. In the last two years, six of our residents were chosen to
feature artwork in the Alzheimer’s Association calendar and notecards.
The Alzheimer’s Association website states: “The artists speak with powerful brush strokes of
color and tentative tracings of line. They pull us into the world of an individual with Alzheimer's. As
we look at their paintings, we see their stories in a language that needs no words. Their paintings show us
glimpses of who they were and who they still are.”
At Penn Hall, Lucy Funk, 101 years old, uses
watercolor paints to create a masterpiece in her
Memories in the Making® session with Life
Enrichment Assistant Kelly Kitzmiller. According
to the Alzheimer’s Association, nationwide
more than 4,000 participants enjoy a session
with a trained Memories in the Making®
leader each week with some 800 new
leaders being trained every year.
Because ‘Thank You’ Just Isn’t Enough
by Charles E. Nelson, Chief Officer for Gift Planning
Our congratulations go out to all the
award recipients mentioned in this
newsletter. But, the congratulations also
go out to many more that have in one way
or another made a difference at Menno
Haven over the past 50 years.
Menno Haven will in 2014 celebrate 50
years of serving those in their later years
of life. This would not have been possible
without the contributions of many over
these years by giving financially or of their
time and knowledge. Even before Menno
Haven opened its doors in 1964, the
founding fathers gave financially and of
their time and knowledge to put together
a plan implementing the actions necessary
to make Menno Haven a reality. This effort
was further complemented by the newly
formed Auxiliary that canned food and
made bandages, towels and bedding for
the nursing home.
Even with the passing of 50 years, that
atmosphere of volunteerism and giving
not only continues but also goes far
beyond our walls to the outlying
communities and even worldwide. Just
during the past year, Menno Haven
residents and employees raised funds for
those affected by tornados in the Mid
West, hundreds of food items were
donated for the Thanksgiving worship
service to the homeless shelter, and
furniture and bedding will be sent to the
Ukraine, just to mention a few.
A little known fact is that for years, the
Chaplain Vernon Isner
and resident volunteers
pack nonperishable food
items to be delivered to
the Franklin County
Homeless Shelter during
the holiday food drive on
our campuses. Menno
Haven also collects food
through the Director
Team and donates the
food to employees who
can use some extra
help.
Chaplains have given at the end of the
year over 30 percent of the offering to
between eight and ten local charities. This
atmosphere of giving also is shown by our
Director Team each Christmas who donate
bags of groceries and gift cards to over 30
employees selected by their peers who
are experiencing tough times.
The list could go on and on but these few
expressions of kindness to others still
substantiate an atmosphere of giving to
others at Menno Haven.
All who have been part of these efforts
take a bow and thank God for allowing us
to help others.
