Sandpoint

| Official Idaho State Travel Guide

This charming town, considered one of

the state’s friendliest, offers an assortment

of attractions to visitors. Stroll

through the quaint downtown area or

cross the highway to try your luck at

the Kootenai River Inn Casino. This lush

valley, only 1,800 feet in elevation, is

brimming with fields of wheat, oats,

barley, and hops for brewing beer.

Those looking for an amazing mountain

biking or hiking experience will be

thrilled to find more than 300 miles of

trails crisscrossing the three mountain

ranges that encircle the valley. Be

sure to take a side trip on Highway 2

over the Moyie River Bridge to see the

misty, 60-foot-high Moyie Falls. Wildlife

watchers and photographers can

enjoy the renowned Kootenai National

Wildlife Refuge. Watch for elk, moose,

deer, eagles, and numerous species of

small mammals and birds.

Set on the northwestern shore of Lake

Pend Oreille, Sandpoint is an artsy

resort town with galleries, shops,

charming restaurants, and Pend Oreille

Winery, offering a bistro, gift shop,

and wine tasting. It is also home to

Coldwater Creek, the upscale northcountry

clothing catalog. Lake Pend

Oreille—so deep it has a naval base

for submarine training—offers ideal

fishing, boat cruises, and camping

along its forested shores. The lake is

popular with anglers searching for giant

Kamloops, a freshwater species of lake

trout that can weigh in at 10 pounds.

Summer is the perfect time to lounge

beside the water with a cool drink or

take in performances at the Festival at

Sandpoint, which gathers an eclectic

mix of established and up-and-coming

musicians. Be sure to try Idaho’s

signature fruit, the huckleberry, at the

annual Huckleberry Festival or purchase

Lake Coeur d’Alene

Lake Coeur d’Alene

Lake Pend Oreille

huckleberries at area gift shops. Stroll

down to the Sandpoint Farmers Market

on the weekends, or take a jaunt

through downtown to experience local

Idaho art during the art walks.

High in the Selkirk Range, Schweitzer

Mountain Ski Resort offers 92 named

runs on 2,900 skiable, powder-plowable

acres in winter. Back in town,

Sandpoint Winter Carnival is yet another

antidote for cabin fever. The event

features indoor and outdoor activities

ranging from energetic skiing, snowboarding,

skijoring, and snowshoeing,

to more relaxing films, fire dances, a

rail jam, bonfires, and culinary events.

Coeur d’Alene

Coeur d’Alene, the largest city in

northern Idaho, blends pure beauty

with a sophisticated air and sits on

the shore of one of the most beautiful

lakes in the country. Coeur d’Alene Lake

has more than 109 miles of shoreline

and abounds with sailing, boating,

jet-skiing, and cruising opportunities.

Hike around the 135-acre Tubbs Hill

peninsula, swim at the city beach, or

grab a two-wheeler for a pleasant ride

along the Coeur d’Alene Parkway State

Park. Stroll along Sherman Avenue in

downtown Coeur d’Alene to discover

eclectic shops and a diverse array

of culinary experiences. Stay at the

beautifully remodeled Coeur d’Alene

Resort or at one of the area’s charming

bed-and-breakfast inns. The stunning

resort has the world’s only floating

green, in addition to a 6,803-yard,

par 71 course around four distinct

geographic features: an expansive

lakeshore, a forested ridge, gently

rolling woodlands, and Fernan

Creek—a revitalized trout stream.

A short distance north of Coeur d’Alene

is the northwest’s largest playground

for children of all ages, Silverwood

Theme Park. Twist and turn on more

than 65 rides and splash in the water at

Boulder Beach Water Park. In October,

Silverwood turns into Scarywood, open

weekends for chilling Halloween fun.

During the winter, snow blankets

the area in prime powder for winter

recreation. There are three resorts

within a reasonable drive—Schweitzer

Mountain, Silver Mountain, and Lookout

Pass.

Post Falls

A river runs through Post Falls and

makes a mighty roar. Just four miles

east of the Washington-Idaho border is

the charming city of Post Falls, set on

the Spokane River. In 1871, Frederick

Post secured a treaty with the local

Coeur d’Alene Tribe and built a sawmill

here. The purchase was memorialized

with a pictograph carved into a

granite cliff in Treaty Rock Park. Post

Falls provides an endless supply of

riverside recreation and river cruises

from Templin’s Resort Marina. Nearby,

the popular Q’Emlin Riverside Park

invites you to swim, picnic, or launch

your boat. Post Falls is just a short drive

from Coeur d’Alene, and offers travelers

an abundance of lodging and services

along the Spokane River.

Silver Valley

Selkirk Mountains

Gold and silver were discovered in Wallace

in 1882, and the Silver Valley grew

into the largest silver mining region in

the world. Experience first-hand the

challenges of yesteryear—railroad

history at the Northern Pacific Depot

Railroad Museum and mining history

at the Sierra Silver Mine or the Wallace

District Mining Museum. Adults can

take a walk on the wild side to view the

unique exhibits at the Oasis Bordello

Museum. See the imaginative public

art throughout downtown Kellogg, then

descend deep underground into the

Crystal Gold Mine. During the summer,

cool down at Silver Rapids Water Park.

Ride on the Route of the Hiawatha

rail trail, an outstanding bike path that

follows a former railroad-bed trail

15 miles through 10 tunnels and

over seven trestle bridges. When the

snow flies, ride up Silver Mountain in

comfort in the single-stage gondola or

head east to Lookout Pass for skiing,

snowboarding, or snowmobiling.

Worley/Plummer

Just south of Coeur d’Alene, the land

rises above the lake to the rolling

wheat fields and green forests of

Worley and Plummer. In this pastoral

landscape is Circling Raven Golf Course

and the Coeur d’Alene Casino. Continuing

south on Highway 95 and then

east on Highway 5, you will discover

Heyburn State Park, one of the oldest

state parks in the country. Stand in awe

beneath the cool shade of 400-year-old

ponderosa pines. This 5,500-acre state

park is set on Chatcolet Lake, making it

the ideal location for wildlife watching.

At the sleepier, southern end of Lake

Coeur d’Alene sits Harrison, perfect for

those enjoying the western end of the

Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes.

St. Maries

Located on the Coeur d’Alene Scenic

Byway and the St. Joe River, this area

is a gateway to adventures that lie in

the wilderness beyond. The fragrant

scent of cedar and white pine forests

surrounds you as you fish, boat, or

Spokane River

Schweitzer

sail on Lake Coeur d’Alene. Marble Creek

highlights the logging heritage of the St.

Maries area, initially founded as a lumber

town. Rockhounds head to Emerald Creek

to search for the Star Garnet, indigenous to

only Idaho and India. To those who love to

hunt, St. Maries is known as one of the best

elk hunting areas in the west.

Cataldo

Standing picture-perfect on a knoll above

the Coeur d’Alene River is the oldest standing

building in Idaho, the Mission of the

Sacred Heart. In 1847, after hearing of the

spiritual teachings of the “black robes,”

the Coeur d’Alene tribe welcomed Jesuit

missionaries led by Father Pierre Jean

DeSmet. Together, they built the Mission

of the Sacred Heart with few tools and

no nails. Now a state park, it provides a

glimpse into Idaho’s history and the

heritage of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe.

Explore the mission’s unique construction,

the adjacent Parish House, two historic

cemeteries, a visitor center, and walking

trails. Don’t miss the new exhibit, Sacred

Encounters: Father De Smet and the Indians

of the Rocky Mountain West, which brings

together exhibits from museums all over

the world.

» If “Land of A Thousand Lakes” wasn’t

already taken, then northern Idaho

would definitely qualify for the nickname.

The three largest lakes—Priest,

Pend Oreille and Coeur d’Alene—all offer

a variety of watery fun. Skim across

the surface of a clear blue lake on a jet

ski. Cast a line for trout or salmon. Take

in a cruise or parasail high above Lake

Coeur d’Alene. Local outfitters, such as

River Odysseys West—named 2012’s

Top Tour Operator by Travel & Leisure

magazine—are ready to take you on a

rafting or kayaking adventure.

» When you step off the dock, you’ll

find northern Idaho is an adventurist’s

dream. Soar like a bird over the

mountains above Wallace tethered

to a zip line. Nearby, the Route of the

Hiawatha beckons cyclists with tunnels

and high trestle bridges to cross. Tracks

that once served the mines left routes

just crying out to become bike paths.

Miles and miles of trails—paved, dirt,

or gravel—cross the Idaho panhandle,

visitidaho.org

waiting for you to put pedal to the

metal. If the 72-mile Trail of the Coeur

d’Alenes is too tame, head up to

either Silver Mountain in Kellogg or

Schweitzer Mountain in Sandpoint for

rugged, lift-served mountain biking.

Serious cyclists may want to consider

joining Ride Idaho, a seven day,

premier bicycle tour to be held August

4-10, 2013. rideidaho.org

» Outstanding golf courses are in northern

Idaho, such as the Coeur d’Alene

Resort Golf Course with its famous

floating green or Circling Raven, a

sumptuous course near Worley.

» If your idea of recreation is lifting a

pair of binoculars, drive to Wolf Lodge

Bay—a bald eagle wintering ground

just seven miles from Coeur d’Alene—

to view the magnificent, noble bird.

Eagle Watch Week, between Christmas

and New Year, has educational displays

and telescopes so visitors can see

some of the 300 bald eagles that nest

here. Or head north to the 2,774-acre

Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge

near Bonners Ferry to view moose,

songbirds, and water fowl.

» When the cold winds come Idaho’s

way, it’s time to head to the hills for

skiing, Nordic skiing and snowmobiling

at or near Schweitzer Mountain, Silver

Mountain, or Lookout Pass. Lookout

Pass even offers a free ski school will

get you up and soaring over the snow.

Abundant recreation and cultural opportunities enhance this area’s lifestyle. The natural beauty of

northern Idaho communities will entice you with lively culture, events, and unique entertainment

opportunities, making this a great place to visit.

« High culture, not-so-high prices »

» With so many lakes and rivers, it

shouldn’t come as a surprise that so

many events in this region feature

water activities. The Pend Oreille

Regatta, the Wooden Boat Festival

in Sandpoint, and the Ironman and

Leadman Triathlons are just a few

events with shimmering water and

blue skies as a backdrop.

» There are 16 museums in northern

Idaho and the entire town of Wallace

is on the National Register of Historic

Places. The Museum of North Idaho

near the beach in Coeur d’Alene is a

good place to visit. You can explore the

rich mining history of the Silver Valley

at the Wallace District Mining Museum

and the Shoshone County Mining &

Smelting Museum in Kellogg. Take a

tour of one of two actual mines in the

area. Learn about the human cost of

extracting the earth’s riches with a

visit to the Sunshine Mine Disaster

Memorial. The Northern Pacific Depot

Railroad Museum in Wallace transports

you back in time to when railroads were

the king of transportation.

» No matter if your musical tastes run

to the refined sounds of the Coeur

d’Alene Symphony or the more eclectic

strains of a lively polka at the Accordion

Festival, or somewhere in between,

northern Idaho mountains are alive

with the sounds of music. Every fourth

Friday from January to April, you can

stroll through beautiful downtown

Coeur d’Alene and enjoy live music

performances. The Mountain Music

Festival held in August at Schweitzer

Mountain Resort is both lively and

entertaining.

» For fine dining in northern Idaho,

make a reservation at Beverly’s in the

Coeur d’Alene Resort. Pair a wine from

the Pacific Northwest’s largest selection

with delightful seasonal cuisine for

an elegant lunch or romantic dinner.

For a little local flavor, try Hudson’s

Hamburgers in Coeur d’Alene, a

downtown institution for 100 years.

» Don’t think the ski resorts close up for

the summer—you can find incredible

festivals and events on the mountains:

Brewfest, Huckleberry Festival, musical

festivals, wine-tasting events, chairlift

rides, and more.

» Things don’t close down in the winter

months, either. The sparkle of stars

on the surface of Lake Coeur d’Alene

is augmented by more than 1.5 million

man-made lights along the shoreline

as the Coeur d’Alene Resort hosts a

magical cruise to Santa’s village.

» If you like the service and amenities

offered by a hotel or motel, you can find

the perfect combination at one of the

more than 75 properties in northern

Idaho. Any of them will give you a place

to relax after exploring the region, visiting

a gallery, strolling through quaint

shops, and dining on whatever your

palate desires. If you’re more into meeting

the local citizenry, you can stay at

one of more than 30 bed-and-breakfast

inns in the region. Get the inside scoop

on the “must-see” and “must-do”

activities from your hosts. For those

with a hankering for the western way,

five guest ranches are waiting to help

you get your cowboy on.
