‣ (i) Total Cross-sections sections and Large Rapidity Gap Events:

Over the past decade, YS in collaboration with G. Pancheri from Frascati, , R. Godbole from

Bangalore, A. Grau from Spagna, , have made a very realistic impact parameter model based on

QCD for the pp, p-pbar, , gamma-p p and gamma-gamma total cross-sections. sections. We have a precise

prediction for pp total cross-section section at the LHC. Also, precise evaluation for what to expect for

events with LRG have been made. The last is of importance in search for the Higgs.

There are over 10 papers in Phys. Letters, Phys Rev. D and EPJ C, and have been presented at

12 International conferences as Invited Talks.

‣ (ii) Novel Methods for Higgs Searches:

YS in collaboration with A. Widom, , S. Reucroft and J. Swain from Boston, have proposed a novel

method for the Higgs search which is based on the realization that when a pair of heavy unstable

particles such as WW, ZZ or ttbar are produced in pair the Higgs field would renormalize the mass

of the particle. For example, the mass of a singly produced Z would not equal the measured mass

when a pair of ZZ is produced.

These works have been presented at 3 International conferences as Invited Talks.

‣ (iii) Low Energy Nuclear Reactions:

YS in collaboration with L. Larsen from Chicago and A. Widom from Boston have provi ded the theory to explain

the experimental results that when a large current is discharged very fast through a thin wi re, in the resulting

explosion neutrons are produced. Ditto for lightning. Our paper has been submitted to PRL.

The Indian Government has invited YS at the end of t his month to present a general review of the present status

of low energy nuclear reactions in New Delhi. Indian Government has decided on a very ambititious plan to

develop low energy nuclear reactions.

‣ (iv) PHYSICS BEYON D THE STANDARD MODEL

Bound states of SUSY particles at future lepton/photon colliders. . Within GMSB models of SUSY

breaking a sleptonium bound state produced in the 2P state could provide an interesting

ing

signature in the two photon signal. We are also studying the effects ects of bound states of Kaluza-

Klein (KK) excitations in universal extra/dimensions models.

Lepton/Flavour

number violation signals arising at loop level within a SUSY scenario in high

energy photon reactions of interest for the future Photon Linear Collider (PLC). We have shown

that such reactions (gamma gamma --> tau mu) ) can provide complementary information on the

allowed parameter space relative to tau --> mu gamma decay. We are currently studying a new

mechanism of LFV in high energy gamma/gamma collisions, mu-tau

fusion, triggered by the Higgs

sector, which is enhanced at large values of the parameter tan/beta.

Charge asymmetries in high energy photon collisions (in collaboration with the group of Prof

Ginzburg, , Novosibirsk, Russia) of interest for the Photon Collider. . We have studied charge

asymmetries within standard model processes which will constitute e a background for New Physics

effects. We have shown definitely that such asymmetries are large e and can be easily measured.

We plan to move then to the study of charge asymmetries for processes of physics BSM.

Minimal Length Theories. . Generalized uncertainty relations, which are found both in quantum

gravity and string theory, are known to provide a minimal length scale. The effect of such minimal

length in the Casimir-Polder interactions between neutral atoms (molecules) has been studied. s

The first order correction term in the minimal uncertainty parameter has been derived and found to

describe an attractive potential scaling as r^{-9} as opposed to the well known long range r^{-7}

retarded potential.

AdS/CFT

correspondence and integrability

‣ (i) Integrability in systems with reduced supersymmetry

If, as it seems, both N=4 Super Yang-Mills (SYM) gauge theory and its string dual, Type II B string

on AdS5 x S5, are integrable the fundamental excitations are the magnons

magnons of the relevant

associated spin chains. Orbifolded gauge theories are an important paradigm since only in their

spectrum there is a gauge invariant fundamental excitation one-magnon

magnon state which

corresponds to the giant magnon in string theory. It would then be important to derive its

anomalous dimension and the finite size corrections to it as an input for the construction of the

Bethe ansatz that solves the AdS/CFT correspondence.

‣ (ii) Finite size corrections to semiclassical AdS/CFT states

The crucial feature necessary for the formulation of the Bethe ansatz of N=4 SYM theory and of

the dual string theory, is additivity of the energy for the multi-magnon

magnon excitations, a feature that

seems to be lost in the case of the finite J (the R-charge) R

configurations. The sigma model

approach to string theory provides an extremely useful tool to understand u

finite size corrections to

anomalous dimensions.

(iii) Thermodynamics of supersymmetric gauge theories

‣ The thermodynami cs of N=4 SYM on R xS3 in the large N-limit N

has proven

to be interesting for several reasons. It has a confinement/ deconfinement

phase transition like in QCD that can be studied even at weak coupling.

This phase transition is conjectured to corres pond to the Hagedorn phase

transition for the dual string theory. Recently a family of theories with

sixteen supercharges has been studied: they all have many BPS vacua and

are obtained from c onsistent truncations of N=4 in four dimensions. ns. We plan

to study the large N thermodynamic s of this class of theories. S mooth

gravity solutions corresponding to different vacua can also be described

rather explicitly. We will consider the possibility to extend th is description at

finite temperature and to dis cuss the dual string thermodynami cs, , possibly

matching Hagedorn behaviors. More generally we will be also interested in

understanding the fate of integrability in general 1/2 BPS backgrounds and

in theories belonging to the Lin-Maldacena

class.

Superconducting Quantum devices.

‣ Quantum fluctuations in a Josephson system; macroscopic quantum tunneling of the

phase across a current biased junction: observation of quantum phase p

slip (i.e.

instanton) ) events at a bias rather close to the Josephson critical current.

Renormalization of phase fluctuations in Josephson systems: renormalization effects

induced by quantum fluctuations of the phase of the superconducting order

parameter. Sine-Gordon models for the dynamics of the environment fluctuation

field.

‣ Devices fabricated by sewering a superconducting loop with one ( or two) Josephson

junctions; the magnetic flux threading the loop is the relevant control parameter.

‣ Low-energy dynamics of these devices in terms of collective plasmon modes, with

sound-like dispersion relation .

‣ We proposed recently a device ( a Y shaped Josephson Junction Array) supporting a

new fixed point and we are studying quantum coherence in superconducting

Josephson devices.

‣ We acquired recognized expertise in the network topology and geometry and on the

coherent behaviours of Josephson junction arrays

‣ Quantum ordered s tates and quantum c omputation

‣ Quantum ordered s tates in low dimensional strongly correlated condensed

matter systems; Pattern of quantum entangl ement in a quantum man y body

ground state. Robust- against de-coherence

coherence- ground state degeneracy, as a

protected subspace for quantum operations in solid-state state devices relevant

for quantum computation.

‣ Lower dimensional Josephson junction networks (JJN) realize devices

supporting quantum ordered s tates; Gauge theory formulati on of planar p

Josephson junction arrays; Planar arrays with charge and magnetic

frustrations obey a Chern-Simons theory; A simple candidate for a quantum

device supporting topological order.

‣ Topological quantum computation requires particles having non-Abelian

statistics under interchange and braidi ng. Such particles can arise as the

low-energy excitations of a topological phase of matter.

‣ In collaboration with G. W. Semenoff, , we showed the existence of isolated

zero modes of Majorana fermions in the soliton sector of a 1D field theory;

‣ Quantum wires embedded in a p -wave superconductor support highly

extended quantum entangled s tates to engineer a topological ly protected p

qu-bit.

una soluzione solitonica del problemadeterminando la velocità di propagazione di tale soluzione in relazione alla

velocità del free boundary.Sarà inoltre fatta un'analisi di stabilità .

‣ 3) Generalizzazione al caso dinamico del modello di banda elastica con moduli di elasticità dipendenti

‣ For many years I have worked on field theories on non-commutative

spacetime, , fuzzy spheres and the like, collaborating with A.P. Balachandran

(Syracuse University) and others, but in the last few years I have become

skeptical on the usefulness of the approach, and have remained c ompletely

unproductive. After many hes itations, in the last six months I have decided

to go back to my old activity as a relativist, and have been wor king on

Regge - spin foam models of discretized spacetime, , which are quite popular

now, very little when I used to work on them. I have c ontacted again a

Carlo

Rovelli and other colleagues in this field. At present I am working on an

extension of a proposal by Rovelli et al., which connects well with the `loop

quantum gravity with which I was associated about ten years ago.

‣ I plan to go on work ing on these models and other topics of general

relativity/quantum gravi ty for the next few years . It is a fairly y mature field,

within which I find myself at ease.

‣ Ignoring my work s on noncommutative geometry, I woul d like to quote my

very old work because it connects well with what I am doi ng now :
