1. To facilitate recycling, the materials used in resin components of more than 

20 grammes are displayed in accordance with ISO standards. 

2. As designated brominated flame retardants are suspected of releasing dioxins 

during incineration, they are not used. 

3. Ozone-depleting substances, such as CFCs and HCFCs, are not used in Pioneer's 

products or manufacturing processes. 

4. All batteries are located in such a way that they can be easily removed. 

5. Use of packing materials has been reduced more than 20 % from fiscal 1990 levels. 

II. Optional Items (Products meet the requirements of at least one of the items) 

1. Standby power consumption is less than 0.5 W. 

2. Resinous packing materials, such as styrene foam, are not used. 

3. Recycled materials are widely used in the product.

Feature Highlights of the New A/V Receivers 

New Generation Audio Formats — Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD Master Audio, with HDMI ver. 1.3a (VSX-LX50) 

High definition media formats such as Blu-ray have brought a new 

dimension to visual entertainment. Audio technology has gone through 

a matching revolution, with the introduction of the highest quality audio 

formats — Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Pioneer’s new 

VSX-LX50 A/V receiver now offers all the benefits of the new generation 

audio formats. These new audio codecs are capable of delivering 

lossless sound that is bit-for-bit identical to the studio master. The 

synergy of high-definition picture complemented with life-like sound 

creates an unprecedented home theater experience, exactly as the 

artist intended. The VSX-LX50 also has the latest HDMI ver. 1.3a for 

supporting high definition audio and video transfer by a single cable. 

Innovations for Superior Sound 

Phase Control — An Innovation for Multi-Channel Sound Compensation 

When amplifying multi-channel audio signals, receivers use 

Low Pass Filter (LPF) for processing low-frequency signals for 

subwoofer output. This extra process causes “phase lag”, or 

approximately 5 msec delay of low-frequency signals with 

respect to those of main channels. The delayed bass affects the quality of 

main-channel sound and makes the sound lack synchronization. 

The latest A/V receivers incorporate Pioneer’s Phase Control 

technologies, which apply a new bass management system to effectively 

compensate for the phase lag between subwoofer channel and the main 

channels. This significantly improves the multi-channel sound without 

any extra operation.

Standing Wave Control (VSX-LX50) 

Speakers 

Acoustic standing waves occur when the sound waves from your speaker 

resonate with those reflected off the walls. This gives a negative effect on 

the overall sound, especially in certain lower frequencies. The result is an 

overly resonant "boomy" sound, depending on the speaker placement, 

your listening position, and the shape of the room. Standing Wave 

Control effectively moderates resonance and also prevents inaccurate EQsetting 

calibration. 

Create an Ideal Acoustic Environment with Ease — with 

MCACC (Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration System) 

(VSX-LX50, VSX-1017AV-S, VSX-917V-S, VSX-817-S) 

MCACC allows you to duplicate the acoustic environment 

of the mixing studio, where recordings and soundtracks 

are mixed and mastered. With the Pioneer A/V receivers, 

the system — complete with a microphone — compensates 

for differences in speaker size, speaker level, and speaker distance, and 

equalizes, all automatically.

THX is a Lucasfilm Ltd. program created to achieve 

maximum accuracy in the reproduction of movie sound. 

Pioneer and Lucasfilm have teamed up to bring the full glory 

of realistic theater sound to the comfort and convenience of 

your home. The VSX-LX50 and VSX-1017AV-S have adhered to rigorous 

guidelines for sound purity, power output and processing capabilities 

required for the certification. The latest THX Select2 certification offers a 

wide array of listening modes for enhanced entertainment.

32-bit Digital Processing by "The 3rd-Generation SHARC ® 

Processor" 

and 48-bit processing DSP from Freescale, Inc. (VSX-LX50) 

The VSX-LX50 incorporates "The 3rd-Generation SHARC ® Processor" from 

Analog Devices, Inc., with 32-bit quality audio processing, and Freescale 

DSP with 48-bit processing precision. The addition of high-performance 

DSPs has enabled true 32-bit processing, giving optimum sound quality, 

compatibility with all the latest surround formats, and the highest 

possible decoding capability.

Advanced Direct Energy Power Amplifier — Designed by 

Pioneer for Optimum Sound Quality (VSX-LX50, VSX-1017AV-S) 

Power amplification in all channels is performed by originally-designed 

Advanced Direct Energy Power Amplifier, featuring minimum energy loss 

and minimum interference between circuits. These features combine to 

deliver high-quality sound that is close to the original. 

The device features “low-impedance, high-current” design, which 

minimizes the impedance at the final output stage. This effectively 

reduces the loss of the signals. 

The advanced amplifier also reduces the electric/magnetic 

interference from the final output stage which significantly affects the 

sound quality. This is made possible by the compact design of the circuit — 

with the minimum size of the loop — for the final output stage. 

What’s more, the device features a new temperature compensation 

function for bias circuitry. Temperature of the output circuit is subject to 

change due to the speaker-driving current. The temperature fluctuations 

cause bias point deviation, which lowers the sound quality. The power 

amplifier for the new A/V receiver effectively compensates for the 

fluctuations to minimize the bias point deviation.

Moreover, the VSX-LX50 and VSX-1017AV-S have a 

double expanded range for acoustic measurements from 

0 to 160 msec including the direct sound area. You can 

make automatic or manual selection of the equalization point for more 

precise acoustic adjustments suited to your room environment. 

Pioneer Hybrid Amplifier Design II uses a newly selected module, for 

improved sound quality and total harmonic distortion (THD). The output 

transistors feature lower base capacitors than the previous model, 

realizing wider range of current drive stage. The module has also 

decreased in size, and the smaller feedback loop minimizes influences 

from the noise. Parts have been carefully selected, such as the power 

amplifier capacitors chosen by listening tests, and the pre-amp IC which 

minimizes the signal path in Direct mode. 

With Front Stage Surround Advance 

you can enjoy surround sound with 

only the front speakers and the 

subwoofer. Since wall reflections are 

not used, the setup is less dependent 

on the room environment, allowing 

front alignment of the speakers. Front 

Stage Surround Advance creates 

excellent sound image and natural 

sound, because it does not alter the 

sound frequency or the original sound 

wave.

through 1080 video signals from Pioneer DVD 

players with 1080 upscaling function. Once

The units come with the newly-developed Sound Retriever, which 

significantly improves the sound quality of compressed audio — such as 

WMA, MPEG-4 AAC, and MP3 — to the level of CD sound. This Pioneerexclusive 

technology applies a special algorithm to restore the signals in 

barely audible ranges, which are eliminated during the compression process.

The DV-400V-S features HDMI (High Definition 

Multimedia Interface), an industry-supported, 

uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface. For

* 6 JPEG file compatibility: This player is compatible with FUJI COLOR CD and KODAK Picture CD formats, 

as well as CD-R/CD-RW/CD-ROMs containing JPEG files. 

A CD recording format should be in accordance with ISO9660 Level1 or Level2 CD-ROM file system. DVD 

recording format should be in accordance with UDF Bridge file system. Note that if the file structure is 

very complex, you may not be able to read/play all files on the disc. 

USB interface 

The USB interface is compatible with USB mass storage devices including external magnetic hard 

devices, portable flash memory (particularly key drives) and digital audio players (MP3 players) of format 

FAT 16/32. It is not possible to connect this unit to a personal computer for USB playback. It is not 

possible to play DivX files through the USB terminal. Pioneer cannot guarantee compatibility (operation 

and/or bus power) with all USB mass storage devices and assumes no responsibility for any loss of data 

that may occur when connected to this unit. With large amounts of data, it may take longer for the 

system to read the contents of a USB device.
