MY REFLECTIONS
ON TODAY’S GOSPEL
We seem to be very quick to judge and very slow to
forgive. We need to change that around. Jesus did not
judge the woman caught in adultery in our Gospel story
today. He certainly had the right to judge her, but rather,
He chose to lead her out of that sinful and unhealthy
behavior by restoring here sense of self-worth. From
that moment on, she saw herself a child of God. Her
eyes were opened. Let us open our eyes to God’s mercy.
THE PASTOR’S
LETTER
Reverend Monsignor
William Charles Hatcher
Dear Parish Family,
HAPPY SAINT PATRICK’S DAY!!! (March 17)
As I write this letter the Cardinals of the Catholic
Church are ready to go into Conclave to elect the new
Pope. Perhaps, by now we already know who he is.
However these last several weeks have been a time of
grace for our Church. Many people have been talking
about our Catholic Faith, our traditions and our hopes.
Yes, certainly, some have also been talking about our
failures, and rightfully so. But, we are entering a new era
for the Church and recognizing weaknesses and sins, we
can come into a future with a new strength for
preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. With a new Holy
Father leading us in prayer and service to the world we
can look with a renewed hope to bring Catholic values
to a world which needs renewal. We can never forget
that WE are the Church and all of us need to live up to
what we profess with our lips. May the Lord who
strengthens us for this endeavour renew the face of the
earth.
Over the last several weeks we have been called to pray
for Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI on his resignation,
prayer for the Church during the Sede Vacante (the
vacant cathedra of the Bishop of Rome), and prayer for
the Cardinals as they met in Congregations and in
Conclave. It has been a time of prayer for all of us.
As you know I will be retiring on July 1 st ; so, it is a
good time (almost four months) to pray for my
successor – the one who will be your new Pastor. It is a
time for prayer to the Holy Spirit to guide the
Archbishop in his choice and a time for our parish that
the Pastor we need, will be the one appointed.
Thank you to our Hospitality Committee for serving
the Irish Soda Bread and St. Joseph Zeppoles today.
Sign-up today, also, to volunteer at our Parish Festival!
HAPPY SAINT JOSEPH’S DAY !!! (March 19)
RESPECT LIFE
CORNER
The Third Trimester of Pregnancy
by Mrs. Patricia Sullivan
At the end of the seventh month of pregnancy, fat
begins to be deposited on your baby. Your baby is
about 14 inches long and weighs from about 2 – 4
pounds. Your baby's hearing is fully developed and he
changes position frequently and responds to stimuli,
including sound, pain, and light.
By the eight month of pregnancy, baby is about 18
inches long and weighs as much as 5 pounds. Baby will
continue to mature and develop body fat reserves. You
may notice that your baby is kicking more. Baby's brain
is developing rapidly at this time, and he can see and
hear. Most internal systems are well developed, but the
lungs may still be immature.
Towards the end of the third trimester, your baby
continues to grow and mature. His lungs are nearly fully
developed. Baby’s reflexes are coordinated so he can
blink, close the eyes, turn the head and grasp firmly.
Your baby's position changes to prepare itself for labor
and delivery. The baby drops down into the pelvis, and
usually his head is facing down toward the birth canal.
By the end of this pregnancy month, your baby is about
18 to 20 inches long and weighs about 7 pounds.
AT SAINT JAMES SCHOOL OUR PLATES ARE
FULL…OF BLESSINGS
by Mrs. Mary McElroy
Much to the delight of the students, plates will literally
be full this week when we celebrate the well-loved Italian
tradition of the Saint Joseph’s table. Born out of the
time honored story of the intercession of Saint Joseph
bringing relief to famine ravaged Sicily centuries ago, the
Saint Joseph’s table is laden with Italian pastries and
other goodies. Tradition holds that the table is piled
high with treats supplied by the community as a giving
back for the blessing of prosperity. Meant as a gift for
the enjoyment of all, especially those in need, it was
created in thanksgiving and grateful appreciation for the
prayers of Saint Joseph for food and an end to famine.
Sponsored by the H.S.A., our Saint Joseph’s table will be
set up in the school, and all members of the Saint James
School Community, are invited to sample the table
immediately after the 9:00 am Mass on Tuesday, March
19 th , Saint Joseph’s Day. Having a Saint Joseph’s table
to look forward to will make the wearing of full dress
uniform by our students a little more enjoyable, and may
be an added incentive for available family members to
attend Mass.
One of Saint James’ great blessings is its eighth grade
students, who have received numerous recognition and
CHRISM MASS
The Annual Chrism Mass will be held at the Cathedral-
Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Newark on Monday,
March 25 th at 8:00 p.m. Your Parish Priests and Deacons
attend the Chrism Mass and it is fitting that members
of the Parish also attend. The Sacred Oils for use at
Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Orders and Anointing of
the Sick are blessed/consecrated at this Mass. Each parish
is asked to bring ten people. If you plan on coming
ARCHBISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL --
MAKING A DIFFERENCE
The Archdiocese of Newark’s Office of Human
Concerns works to spread the Gospel’s challenge of our
need to care for the poor and the marginalized within
our society. It does this by making presentations in parishes,
schools and religious education programs about
the importance of Catholic Social Teaching, specific
social issues and the importance of service in the life of
the Church.
The Office of Human Concerns also works with youth
groups from both the Archdiocese of Newark and nationally
who are looking for service projects and an
opportunity to reflect on their experiences. During the
last two summers, over 80 young people from around
the country will come to the Archdiocese to serve the
poor with service projects in our shelters, parishes and
soup kitchens.
This Office creates a greater awareness of the important
social issues of the day such as poverty, climate change
and fair housing by providing information to parishes
and practical ways to be involved in making positive
changes to the world.
Thank you for your support of the Archbishop’s Annual
Appeal, which makes the Office of Human Concerns a
reality!
USED CAR NEEDED
If you or someone you know has a used car that you no
longer have need for, please contact Monsignor Bill
Hatcher. We are looking for a car for one of our
Colombian seminarians. Thank you. For your assistance.
HOSPITAL VISITATIONS
If you or someone you know is in the hospital please
inform the hospital staff you are Catholic and a member
of Saint James the Apostle Church. The priests and
deacons will be able to find you so a visit can be
arranged. Contact the Parish Office to be added at Mass
and/or on the Prayer Line.
HOW TO REPORT ABUSE
The Archdiocese takes very seriously any and all
allegations of sexual misconduct by members of the
clergy, religious and lay staff. We encourage anyone
with knowledge of an act of sexual misconduct to
inform us immediately so that we may take appropriate
action to protect others and provide support to victims
of sexual abuse. If you wish to report an allegation call
the Office of Child & Youth Protection -201-407-3256.
INTENTIONS FOR THE SICK
At the “General Intercessions” we pray for the sick.
Our prayers for the sick are very important, especially in
critical times of sudden illness, surgery or worsening
condition. We will continue to pray for and mention the
names of our sick parishioners when we receive notice
from the family or the individual asking for prayers.
Their name will be mentioned for three weeks and after
the names will continue in the bulletin, until we receive
notice otherwise. If the condition worsens we will
mention the name again at Mass when notified.
RECEIVING COMMUNION
It is good to remind ourselves of the reverence needed
when we receive the Body and Blood of Christ. When
we approach the altar, if receiving on the hand, please
remove any gloves beforehand. Remember to bow
slightly without being ostentatious. If communion runs
out please wait for the Minister to return.
Have You Heard About Girls on the Run
Contact: Nancy.mahoney.rajs@gmail.com
Girls on the Run are found across the United States and
Canada serve girls in their local communities. The program
is made up of a 20-lesson curriculum designed for
3rd – 8th grade girls and combines training for a 5k run
with lessons that inspire them to recognize and honor
their individual strengths and talents and to celebrate
their inner selves. The spring program runs a 10-week
season that gives girls the opportunity to participate in a
non-competitive 5K running event. For most of the
girls, this is the first time that they have ever attempted a
physical goal of this magnitude and completion of the 5k
provides an incredible feeling of strength and a real
sense of accomplishment.
The goals of the program are to aid and support girls in
their emotional, physical, social and intellectual development.
The girls complete the 10-week program with a stronger
sense of identity, greater self-confidence, a healthier
body image and a better knowledge of what it means to
be a member of a team and a community.
The spring season begins the end of March and
registration is now open. For more information see
BLESSING OF EASTER FOOD AND EGG HUNT!
Saturday, March 30 at 11:00AM in the Church
The custom of blessing food for Easter arose from the
discipline of fasting throughout Lent and the special
Easter fast during the Easter Triduum. Easter was the
first Day when meat, eggs and other foods could be
eaten again. So, for the blessing, bring a basket of food
samples of the meal you will share for the first time at
Easter.
The Easter Egg Hunt for the children will begin after
the blessing of the food.
Younger children (0-5) are invited to find the eggs on the grass
closest to the Rectory; the older children can run free on the
grass behind the church.
Bring a sample of your Easter Dinner, Easter baskets and join
us Saturday morning!
Who knows…. maybe our resident bunny will come hop, hop,
hopping along!
