Annual Report
At Solomon Schechter
Day School, we ignite
our students’ Jewish
souls, educate them
to their highest potential,
and empower them
to use their knowledge,
skills, and creativity to
enrich our world.

Schechter Seventh Graders
Contemplate Utopia
Have you ever heard of Triastra,
Calliacian, Nomestea, or Mythica
Vibrantica? If not, you probably
didn’t visit Schechter’s seventh grade
language arts classes this year.
Like Sir Thomas More in the 16th
century, 7th grade students created
utopias, or perfect societies. As part
of the project, which serves as an
introduction to the class reading of
The Giver by Lois Lowry, students
explored issues facing our society
and devised a community that sought
to eliminate these issues.
Students drew on their knowledge
of the rights of citizens and the
operation of government, topics they
had studied in social studies, to
create a Citizen’s Handbook.
In addition, class members created
a model or diagram as a visual
representation of their ideas.
Throughout the process of developing
their utopias, students spent time in
thoughtful discussion, weighing ideas
to reach consensus in their groups.
They also discussed the rationale for
taxes, debated the function of
money in an economy, evaluated
the role of competition in a society,
and analyzed Greek and Latin
root words to determine names for
their utopias.
Best of all, students enjoyed the
process. Isn’t that utopia?
Dear Friends:
Values. Community. Excellence.
These are the guiding principles that have shaped Solomon Schechter Day School since we opened our doors to our first
27 students nearly 50 years ago. And these are the guiding principles that will continue to shape our School in the years
ahead. This past year, planning for a strong and secure future was the overarching goal of our Board and School leadership.
We understand that for many people, perhaps for all of us, the 2010-2011 school year will be remembered as the
year we announced our plan to consolidate our Northbrook and Skokie campuses. Data from our Sustainability 2040
initiative indicated that both campuses were underutilized and consolidation was the only way to ensure our future.
This announcement came with a great deal of emotion. 9301 Gross Point Road is more than a building – it has been
a second home filled with memories of learning and friendship. However, our community demonstrated its incredible
strength as everyone united to build a new and stronger future together.
We believe that through this consolidation we will maximize our space and resources, and begin to fully realize our vision
of a financially healthy, academically excellent, warm, and diverse Jewish day school housed in an exceptional facility.
We are grateful for the tremendous support from the entire community, and for the continued trust of our Schechter families.
“Looking ahead, we envision a financially healthy,
academically excellent, warm and diverse Jewish day school
housed in an exceptional facility.”
Throughout the transition process, our School leadership, faculty and staff, Parent Organizations, and Board have worked
tirelessly to ensure that our students continue to flourish. In addition, during the summer months, our educational and
administrative leadership teams have worked non-stop with our building and maintenance staff to determine the optimal
use of space to create a warm, nurturing, and stimulating learning environment that supports our Pre-K – 2nd grade
community in Skokie and our K-8th grade community in Northbrook.
This year marks our School’s 50th anniversary. It is a monumental achievement for any business or institution to make it
to its Jubilee year, and kal v’homer (how much more so) a Jewish day school. While it is natural to look back at all that
has been accomplished to make Schechter an enduring institution in the Chicago Jewish community, we hope you will also
look ahead to dream of all that we could accomplish in our next 50 years with your continued support.
Anyone connected to Solomon Schechter knows that Schechter is much more than a school; it is a place that transforms the
lives of both children and families. We believe that nothing compares to a Schechter education, and we will work vigilantly
to demonstrate that Schechter is the best investment parents can make for their family, and that Schechter merits the
strongest support from our Chicago Jewish community and beyond.
On the pages that follow we present highlights from the 2010-2011/5771 school year, a financial report, enrollment
statistics, and our Honor Roll of Donors. On behalf of everyone at Solomon Schechter Day School, we want to express our
deepest appreciation for your continued support and commitment to our School, our students, and our families.
Together, may we all go from strength to strength.
Schechter Prepares Us
For The Future
We leave Schechter prepared to climb
any mountain. Our General Studies and
Judaic Studies have prepared us for any
future, academically and socially. We
were taught not just to find answers but
also to ask questions; we have learned
how to use multiple lenses to examine
social and religious issues. For our
social justice unit in language arts, we
integrated Judaism and General Studies
by identifying how characters in various
books followed principles that we have
in our Torah. In math class, we do more
than just prepare for high school; we
challenge ourselves. We go into high
school with confidence that we have
what it takes to succeed.
The real test of a school is how its students
fare in different, more challenging
environments. We leave here with a
monolithic climb ahead, and there will
be many more challenges throughout
our lives. Because of our education at
Schechter and the maps that we leave
here with, those climbs seem a little less
daunting, a little more attainable.
As we all go off to high school we will
branch out and grow apart. But throughout
our lives, we will still feel the sense
of family and kinship that we do now.
Our similarities unite us as a family,
as our differences strengthen us as
individuals. Truly, we have come so far.
Highlights of the 2010-2011/5771 School Year
Hundreds of energetic and enthusiastic
children entered our Northbrook and
Skokie campuses last August from
more than 30 communities throughout
the Chicago area. Throughout the
school year, our dynamic faculty was
dedicated to helping each and every
child reach his or her full potential.
Our students left school in June with new
skills and a greater understanding of
who they are as Americans and Jews.
We introduced a new mission
statement and core values that resulted
from the work of our Strategic Visioning
Task Force last year. Our students and
our Kehillah – our community – are at
the heart of our mission (see annual
report cover) and core values (inside
front cover).
We expanded to a Pre-K – 8th grade
Jewish day school with the opening of
our new Marvell D. and Stanley J. z"l
Ginsburg Pre-K program for three- and
four-year-olds at our Skokie Campus.
This program has succeeded beyond
our expectations, and we began the
2011-2012 school year with a second
classroom and an enrollment that has
grown from 9 to 24.
We are thrilled to report that our
commitment to excellence in all curricular
areas has paid off substantially. Our
General Studies curriculum is both
research- and inquiry-based, and
encourages students to become critical
thinkers and confident learners. Our
new middle school science curriculum
is at the forefront of science education
in the United States. Our commitment
to meeting the needs of diverse
learners continues to grow.
Beginning in the youngest grades,
Schechter students were exposed to the
latest technology to enrich their learning
experience in both General and Judaic
Studies. We equipped more classrooms
with SMART Boards and students used
state-of-the-art computer labs and
mobile labs.
In our Judaic Studies curriculum, we
set the stage to expand our integration
of the successful Standards and
Benchmarks program for teaching
Chumash into third grade. Applying
standards-based learning in Jewish
Studies is part of our commitment to
excellence. We continue to look for
additional ways to integrate our General
and Judaic Studies curricula so that
our students benefit from the opportunity
to think in multi-dimensional ways and
make connections across a variety of
disciplines and perspectives.
We honored Beth and Jeff Kopin at
our Annual Dinner, held at the Art
Institute of Chicago. The event brought
more than 500 members of our
community together, kicking off our
Annual Campaign. We are grateful to
the Kopins for their commitment to
Schechter and for naming our new
Pre-K program in memory of Beth’s
father and in honor of her mother.
There is no greater testament to the
value of a Schechter education than to
see our Schechter graduates return
as Schechter parents. This year, our
student body included 75 children of
Schechter alumni and several students
with two alumni parents! At our 8th
grade commencement ceremony, 13
graduates received their diplomas
from a parent who had attended
Schechter. This act of Midor L’dor is in
keeping with our commitment to pass
on our Jewish traditions. We look
forward to welcoming more children
of alumni in the years ahead.
We received a grant from the iCenter
to pilot a special project at our
Skokie Campus this year called Mas’ei
Mishpachot, Family Journeys. This
initiative is designed to reach out and
support the parents of our youngest
students in Pre-K, kindergarten, and
first grade to open the door for
Schechter families to Jewish education
and observance.

Deborah Stern Harris, Sager Middle
School Technology Coordinator, was
selected as the Grinspoon-Steinhardt
Award winner from the Metropolitan
Chicago area. The award is given to
a local educator who continues to
make a lasting impact on the lives of
Jewish children, and who demonstrates
excellence in Jewish education. Mrs.
Harris was nominated for the award
for her outstanding efforts in the field
of technology. Debbie joins Schechter
Grinspoon-Steinhardt award winners
Irene Sufrin, Zipporah Perlmutter,
and Pnina Orbach.
Throughout the year and during the
summer, our faculty and staff participated
in numerous opportunities for professional
development. Curricular areas included
math, science, language arts, Hebrew,
history, Talmud, Bible, Halacha,
Jewish law, song-leading and Tefillah,
communications, video, technology, and
more. In addition, 14 members of
our faculty in the Schechter cohort of the
Spertus Master’s of Jewish Professional
Studies Program attended two intensive
seminars on the role that Jewish aesthetics
plays in our culture and the use of
technology in education. We are proud
that our faculty and staff continue to
look for ways to bring their knowledge
and skills into the classroom to support
our School and our students.
We completed a major reorganization
and restructuring that began five years
ago and resulted in a reduction of
personnel costs of just under $2 million.
We also examined our expenses on a
line-by-line basis and renegotiated our
vendor relationships for an additional
savings of over $550,000 annually.
Through the support of our community,
we provided approximately $2.9 million
of tuition assistance to nearly 50 percent
of Schechter families.
Last year we trained a new cadre of
parent ambassadors who assisted with
tours and outreach to prospective
Schechter families. Recruitment activities
included the return of the traditional
Open House at the homes of current
parents and in our school buildings.
We sponsored Family Fun Events for
current and prospective families and
Art Enrichment workshops for three- to
five-year-olds. We look forward to
expanding our outreach efforts and
parent involvement in the coming year.
We expanded our community relations
efforts by reaching out to our Alumni
with a new Alumni Facebook page, a
LinkedIn program, and several reunions.
We also held a successful Torathon
featuring Rabbi Sharon Braus, welcomed
grandparents and special friends at
Yom Orchim in Northbrook and Skokie,
and held Sichot Schechter community
education programs.
We increased efforts to build awareness
and interest in Schechter through publicity
and advertising, produced weekly
electronic Shabbat Bulletins to bring
Schechter to life for our community,
expanded our use of video, and posted
videos frequently on our Schechter
YouTube channel. We also initiated
efforts to launch a new and improved
website – www.schechter.org – check it
out if you haven’t done so already.
Throughout the school year – in our
classrooms, computer labs, library, and
learning center; in our music rooms and
art studios; on our basketball courts and
playing fields; on the stage, in the
community, and more – you could see
our School's commitment to academic
excellence, Jewish life and values, and
educating the whole child come to life.
In the words of Schechter Past President
Izzy Weinzweig, “Something remarkable
happens every day at Solomon Schechter.”
Come in and see for yourself!
Why I Love Schechter
“In three words, Schechter is
community, learning, and Judaism.
Schechter is the type of community
that promotes friendship, leadership,
learning, fun, and, most of all, the
love of being Jewish. Each day when
I walk into school, I am greeted.
Whether it's a security guard, a parent,
a teacher, and sometimes even a
student, I know that I’m starting my
day in a community way.”
– Spencer S., Grade 6
“The friendships that I have developed
individually and as an entire grade
have created bonds that are everlasting.
Together we have shared life events –
receiving our first siddur, reading
Torah, births, deaths, becoming a
Bar/Bat Mitzvah, and many others.
The love and support of my classmates
has helped to mold me into the
person I am today. Schechter is like a
second home to me. All the memories
I have made and the lessons I have
learned here will stick with me forever.”
– Annee W., Grade 7
“When I think of Schechter, I think of
my home, a place I feel comfortable
and secure, a place where I feel
accepted and understood, a place
where I feel educated, and a place
where I feel loved. Nothing can
compare to the feeling that Schechter
provides.”
– Rayna G., Grade 8
The preceding excerpts were taken from the
winning 6th, 7th, and 8th grade essays from
our “Why I Love Schechter” essay contest,
held prior to our Annual Dinner. The winners,
Spencer, Annee, and Rayna, are pictured
Schechter is a Safe and
Respectful Community
Our community at Schechter is
created by our connection to each other
and to Judaism. At Schechter, we do
not have all the same viewpoints
or opinions about how to live life,
practice Judaism, or affiliate politically.
But community is not about sharing
the exact same perspective as
everyone else. Community is about
having a safe environment in which
everyone is able to share his or
her own ideas without the fear that
they will be judged or ridiculed.
In many classes at Schechter we
have open discussions about a wide
range of topics, from politics to
Judaism. During these discussions
our teachers encourage us to speak
up and share opinions, but they
also moderate and facilitate these
discussions to make sure that no one
is ever put down. In this community,
we have learned that our respect for
one another, and our connections
to one another, are the most important
values.
With these life lessons in mind, we
know that no matter where we, as
graduates, pursue our interests in the
future, we can feel confident that
we will always have a home within
any Jewish community.
Only at Schechter
Only at Schechter do General Studies
and Judaic Studies come together as one.
Some people say it’s like two worlds
where there is no contact between the
two worlds. I’m telling you – there is
a connection! We are part of the
American culture, but at the same time,
we keep our Jewish identity. We have
learned from two worlds which appear
to us as one. It was all a part of our
daily schedule. We learned to be good
citizens and also proud Jews. This only
happens at Schechter....
The trip to Israel connects and finishes
what we have learned at Schechter.
We were in Israel and saw all that
we have learned these past nine years.
We saw the cities, we experienced the
culture, we spoke Hebrew, and we
prayed near the Kotel. At the beginning
of the ceremony we sang the song
from the book of Isaiah, chapter 66,
“Sisu et Yerushalayim, gilu bah”
(Rejoice for Jerusalem, be happy for it).
Schechter is the place where we can be
happy and proud Jews. Like Jerusalem,
the city that is connected to all, Solomon
Schechter is the place that connects the
past, the present and the future – what
we’ve learned, who we are, and who
we will be. And this happens only at
Schechter!
A Very Special Thank You To Our
Parent Organizations
During the past year, Schechter parents volunteered thousands of hours of
service to our Sager, Skokie, and Sager Middle schools through our incredible
Parent Organizations (POs). They prepared and served special lunches and
holiday meals, packed holiday treats, taught art awareness in the classroom,
organized tzedakah projects, provided support and thanks to Schechter faculty
and staff, attended field trips, and much more.
Schechter families celebrated
many chagim as a community
with activities led by our POs
including sukkah decorating,
Hanukkah and Shabbat
celebrations, preparing for
Passover sedarim, and
special assemblies and
grade-level celebrations.
Our POs also raised thousands of dollars to support Schechter through fundraising
activities including Mishloach Manot greetings, yearbooks, books at our book fairs,
after-school classes, Schechterwear, and more.
Through all of these efforts, our POs helped to make Schechter a warm,
nurturing, and stimulating learning environment for our students.
A very special thank you to our PO Presidents and others for their tremendous
support as we worked to consolidate our Skokie and Northbrook campuses.
Your outreach efforts helped to promote a strong and united sense of community
among our children and families.
Art awareness in the classroom is just one of the
many programs organized by our POs to enrich the
educational experience of our students.
Area of Greatest Need*
* Many donors understand that there are costs associated
with a Solomon Schechter Day School education that are
hard to categorize. The Area of Greatest Need Fund allows
us to use these funds in areas where there is the greatest
need. We appreciate the trust that donors place in us to use
this money wisely to best serve our students and families.
The Annual Giving Family of Funds supports faculty and
students through the School’s operating budget. Should
designated contributions exceed a Fund’s budgeted limit,
the school directs the use of such funds to the Area of
Greatest Need.
For detailed descriptions of each of these funds,
please visit our website at www.schechter.org.
Additional Ways to Give
Tributes
Tribute gifts are a thoughtful way to celebrate a simcha,
honor or memorialize a friend or family member.
We acknowledge all gifts of $18 or more with a letter
to the recipient.
Tree of Life
Our Trees of Life are beautiful works of art that are displayed
at both campuses. Purchasing a gold, silver or copper leaf is
a very meaningful way to honor or remember a friend or
loved one.
Matching Gifts
Many employers have a Matching Gift Program that enables
you to double the impact of your gift to Solomon Schechter
Day School. Please check with your employer.
Endowment and Planned Giving
Endowment gifts help secure the future of Solomon Schechter
Day School in perpetuity. They can be unrestricted or directed
to support a specific program or project. Each year income
from them provides scholarship assistance, programming,
or curriculum enhancements.
By making an endowment gift you help strengthen Schechter
while fulfilling your philanthropic interests and values.
An endowment can also offer a unique opportunity to
remember a loved one by naming a program in his/her
honor or memory.
Endowment vehicles include:
Outright Gifts
Charitable Bequests
Charitable Gift Annuities
Retirement Plan Assets, Life Insurance
For detailed descriptions of each of these Endowment
vehicles, please visit our website at www.schechter.org.
The Solomon Schechter Day School Endowment Foundation
was created in partnership with the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Chicago’s Day School Endowment program,
which was established to ensure that Solomon Schechter Day
School and our sister day schools have the necessary
resources to meet community needs. All commitments to the
Day School Endowment Foundation are recognized as
commitments to the Jewish Federation’s Centennial Campaign.
Volunteer and Make a Difference!
We are grateful to our many volunteers who share their
time, talent, and expertise in and out of the classroom.
For information on volunteer opportunities, please contact
our Administrative Office at 847.498.2100.
