5.5 A trip to Namhkam<br />
A. Find out if any students have been to Namhkam. If so, ask them how they got there, and get them to<br />
talk about their journey. Look at the map, and elicit information from the map:<br />
- Namhkam is north of Lashio and north-east of Mandalay<br />
- It’s in Shan State, in northern Burma<br />
B. Students read the text, and guess the missing information.<br />
Elicit a few guesses, and write them on the board.<br />
C. Play audio 2.7. Students listen, and check their guesses.<br />

Answers:<br />
Namhkam is a nice town in the mountains 300 kilometres from Mandalay, in Burma. The<br />
best way to get there is by bus . It takes ten hours to get there, and costs 12,000 kyat .<br />
You can’t get there by train because there isn’t a train line . You can also go by car . That<br />
costs about 50,000 kyat .<br />
5.6 Adjectives to describe transport<br />
A. Tell students to read the Adjectives section of the Language Reference.<br />
Check understanding of the words in the speech bubbles.<br />
Let students use dictionaries to check the meanings of the words in the box, or you can tell them.<br />
Students read the opinions of different types of transport, and match the adjectives in the box with<br />
the opinions. There are two adjectives for each opinion.<br />
Answers:<br />
1. uncomfortable, reliable 4. cheap, dangerous<br />
2. crowded, slow 5. unreliable, unpopular<br />
3. expensive, comfortable<br />
