About the Workshop:
This two day program focuses on Montessori Methods for
Dementia, an innovative method of working with older adults
living with cognitive and/or physical impairments. Montessori
Methods for Dementia is based on the education philosophies
of famed childhood educator Dr Maria Montessori.
When Dr Cameron Camp was the Research Scientist &
Director of the Myers Research Institute (USA) he discovered
that Dr Montessori’s philosophies and principles could be
effectively adapted to dementia activity programming. Since
this time, research has provided clear evidence of increased
levels of engagement and participation in activities when
Montessori approaches are implemented with persons living
with dementia.
By the end of the two day program participants will be able to:
1. Link needs, interests, skills and abilities of persons with
dementia to Montessori goals and objectives
2. Describe the Montessori Methods for Dementia model and
explain why this is a useful technique for those living with
dementia
3. Describe the Montessori philosophy as well as the basic
Montessori principles
4. Develop programming for individuals and groups based on
the Montessori classes of activities as modified for
dementia
5. Create and present Montessori activities and programs
based upon Montessori principles
6. Assess current programming strategies and know to
modify same to be more Montessori in nature.
The Audience:
Individuals who are interested in learning about Montessori
Methods for Dementia are invited to attend. Montessori for
Dementia principles can be implemented by a range of people
including diversional therapists, nurses, support workers, paid
carers, lifestyle and leisure staff, family members and
community support workers.
The Facilitator:
Anne Kelly is a registered nurse who also holds qualifications
in Post Graduate Dementia Management, Assessment &
Workplace Training and Dementia Care Mapping. She has
worked extensively in dementia care in both residential and
community care for the past 30 years.
In 2007 after completing a train the trainer she received her
credentialing in both Montessori Based Activities for people
living with dementia and Spaced Retrieval from Meyers
Research Institute in Ohio.
In 2009 she was awarded a Churchill Fellowship for
Rehabilitative Therapies for Dementia Care enabling her to
travel to Canada and the USA to work alongside world experts
in this area including Dr Cameron Camp, Professor Michelle
Bourgeois and Gail Elliott. Since her return from overseas
Anne has been working towards the accreditation of the short
course in Rehabilitative Therapies – Dementia.
A collaborative effort between McMaster University in Canada
and Alzheimer’s Australia Tasmania has resulted in a
partnership responsible for the sharing of Montessori for
Dementia Training materials and resources. Anne is currently
the dementia trainer and consultant for Alzheimer’s Australia
Tasmania delivering Rehabilitative Therapies – Dementia
