Bills included in your rent
Water, gas and electricity bills are included in your rent, so
you don’t have to worry about them.
Spread your payments
With University accommodation, you can pay your rent in
three instalments. You don’t have to provide a UK guarantor.
Flexible contracts
Our standard contract is for 42 weeks, so you can go home
in the summer vacation if you like. If you prefer to stay for a
full year, just ask. Most private landlords only offer
contracts for a full year.
Room contents insurance
We set this up for you. It’s included in your rent.
Free internet
In all University-owned accommodation, internet connection
is included in your rent. It’s ready to use when you arrive.

The Ranmoor Village is set
in leafy, landscaped
grounds in one of
Sheffield’s most popular
suburbs. Campus and the
city centre are just ten
minutes away by bus.
The atmosphere is very

with families.

Opal 2
En-suite rooms are £4,392.36 per year. You get
your own bedroom and bathroom, with a
shared kitchen and living space. Deluxe rooms,
with a bigger bed, are £4,765.74 per year.
We look after these rooms in partnership with
the private landlord Opal. That means you have
access to University services such as welfare
support. Bills are included in your rent, but there
is a separate charge of about £160 per year for
internet.

the duration of your course, if

terms and conditions but they

Couples and families
All our accommodation for
couples and families is close
to the University, shops and
good schools. If you need it,
we can give you a contract
for a full year. You can renew
your contract every year so
you don’t have to move.

and mature
students
If you’re over 21 and you’d
rather be with students your
own age, we can help with
that. We can also give you a
longer contract so you can
stay here during the holidays.

Catering allowance explained
If you choose catered accommodation, you’ll
get a payment card called an eatwithUS card.
The card is credited with a flexible £42 weekly
allowance each term. It gets you offers and
discounts on meals, snacks and drinks in many
of the cafes, bars and restaurants on campus.
Your weekly allowance is included in your rent.
It’s valid for 31 weeks a year. Vacations are not
included. If you want to spend more than £42 a
week, you can top up your card.
If you choose self-catering, there is no food and
drink allowance included in your rent. But you
can still buy an eatwithUS card if you want, for
a term or a full year (31 weeks).
Your eatwithUS card helps you keep track of
what you spend. It also means you don’t have to
have cash on you to get something to eat on
campus.

Food
There will be plenty of chances to sample
traditional British food such as fish and chips,
pie and peas and Sunday lunch. We also serve
authentic dishes from other countries, including
India, China, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.
There’s a lot to choose from on campus and in
the Student Villages. As well as home cooked
meals, you can get sandwiches, barista coffees,
smoothies and cakes. An eatwithUS card helps
you budget.
We provide for different religious and ethical
needs. There are halal and vegetarian options
and we support students during Ramadan.
We use fresh, local produce and we’re a
recognised Fairtrade university, which means
we’re committed to promoting Fairtrade.

How to apply
If you’re holding an offer of a place on a course,
you can apply for accommodation online at:
www.sheffield.ac.uk/accommodation
Tell us where you want to live, what type of room
you want and whether you want catered or selfcatering.
What happens next?
1–When we receive your application, we send you
an acknowledgment email. If you’re an insurance
offer holder, postgraduate or visiting student,
we’ll send you a confirmation slip with your
acknowledgement.
2–When you have met the conditions of your
offer, your application is processed. If you’re an
insurance offer holder, postgraduate or visiting
student, you also need to return your
confirmation slip before we can process your
application.
3–From mid-July, we begin to allocate
accommodation. Unconditional offer holders
and confirmed postgraduates who meet the
terms of our guarantee are the first to be
allocated accommodation.
4–In August we begin to allocate accommodation
to conditional offer holders who have met the
terms of their offer.
5–Once you have been allocated accommodation,
we send you an email advising that your contract
is available to view online.
6–When you accept your contract, you’re asked to
pay £150 deposit and set up a payment plan. If
you’re unable to do this, please contact the
Accommodation Office (right) before the deadline.
7–You should arrive in Sheffield no later than
Sunday 18 September 2011. If for any reason you
can’t, please notify the Accommodation Office.
Deposits and payment methods
When you accept your contract, we ask you to
pay a damage deposit of £150. This is held until
the end of your contract. Your rent is paid in
three instalments. The first instalment is due on
5 October 2011.
Activities and events
There are lots of activities and events organised
to help you make friends and settle in. A small
subscription charge for these events is added to
your first instalment of rent.
Internet
Internet connection is free in all our
accommodation, except Opal 2, where there is a
charge for the year. Most of our accommodation
comes with free internet TV and telephony,
which you can use through your computer.
Codes of practice
All University-owned single-student
accommodation complies with the Universities UK
Code of Practice for the Management of Student
Housing. That means we have very clear policies
and procedures relating to health and safety,
maintenance, student welfare and other issues.
Opal 2 is managed in partnership with a private
landlord. Opal 2 is subject to the ANUK code, a
similar code for large private landlords.
