News in brief
Teen stabbed to death
Grahamstown police are investigating
a case of murder after
a 16-year-old boy was stabbed to
death on Friday night.
Police spokesperson, Colonel
Funisile Phillip said the incident
started in I Street when two boys
quarreled. He said: “When the
victim left the scene, the suspect
followed him and allegedly
stabbed him in Victoria Street.”
Colonel Phillip said the boy was
found bleeding by one of his
friends, who alerted others. When
they rushed back to the scene,
the boy was dead. No arrests
have been made.
Housebreaking
Police have opened a case of
housebreaking after a man allegedly
broke into a house in Watson
Street during the early hours of
Saturday morning. Police spokesperson,
Colonel Funisile Phillip
said the occupant had woken up
to find the lights on. When he
went to investigate, he was confronted
by a gun-wielding man,
who demanded money before
making off with a camera, a cellphone
and a laptop. No arrests
have been made.
Festive safety alert
Police spokesperson, Colonel Funisile
Phillip warned that people
should not walk alone in badly lit
areas at night. “One often sees
women walking alone at night
talking on their cellphones. Because
of this, they are often exposed
to rapes and muggings.
People should be more careful
especially during this time of the
year,” Phillip said.
End of the road for goat project
PRUDENCE MINI
The long-awaited arrival of 175 goats in July last year was
greeted with joy, and there were hopes that the Makana Goat
Project, an initiative of the Makana Goat Farmers Co-operative
which got a R4 million start-up boost from the Eastern Cape government
in 2007, would finally take off.
But instead, a request for a report from the project’s beneficiaries
has brought up allegations of mismanagement, personal vendettas,
ruin, and a debt of R850 000.
Thina Sinako, a support programme run in partnership with the
Eastern Cape’s Department of Local Development, says the project's
term ended on 30 November. Now the department wants a report
from the beneficiaries – plus they need to pay back R850 000.
The local government is also demanding answers. Councillor
Les Reynolds at the municipality's recent Economic Development,
Tourism and Heritage portfolio committee meeting asked how long
Makana, which had helped facilitate the project, would have to keep
on nursing it.
Thina Sinako visited the project in October. The report from their
agricultural expert was that the goats were in poor physical condition.
One had died from suspected heartwater disease. Their wellbeing
was further at risk because of erratic deliveries of water by the
municipality.
“If the current status quo were to remain, the goats could all be
dead by the end of the year,” the report read, suggesting that it was
cause for serious concern, given that they were bought with public
funds. It was resolved that the goats be removed temporarily until
18 January next year and that a commercial farmer would be paid to
help restore the goats to health.
Department of Local Economic Development director, Riana
Meiring, said at a Project Management Committee meeting on Monday,
22 November attended by Thina Sinako, they had explicitly explained
what would happen upon project closure. Meiring said it was
explained that the beneficiaries were responsible for compiling the
closing-out report, which included a verification of expenditure since
the inception of the project.
This report must be submitted to Thina Sinako at the end of February
in preparation for a final report by an appointed auditor. “They
made it clear that an amount of R850 000 needed to be recovered from
the project,” Meiring said.
However, she said the time spent by the Municipality, Cacadu
District Municipality and department of Agriculture could be converted
to money, which could decrease the amount that needed to be
recovered.
Meiring said that there was a PMC meeting scheduled for Thursday,
9 December where it would be discussed what would become of
the goats once they were released from “hospital”.
ZOLANI Myeki, the man accused of murdering local ANC Youth League
leader, Oscar Dondashe, was cross-examined by both his Defence attorney
Mthuthuzeli Xozwa and prosecutor, advocate Heinz Obermeyer, in the Grahamstown
High Court yesterday.
Myeki who had allegedly been in possession of a semi automatic 9mm parabellum
firearm from 3 to 12 July 2009, including on the morning Dondashe
was murdered, said, “I usually go out to drink on weekends, but on the night
of this murder I was sleeping in my room.”
Myeki said that no one could support his claim that he had been sleeping
when the murder took place, because he had been sleeping alone and no one
had seen him.
The case was postponed to tomorrow for further evidence.
ANC Youth League regional chairperson, Mabhuti Matyumza, said, “We
are happy that this case is proceeding and we hope that it will conclude its
business soon, because it has been going on for quite a long time.”
ANC Youth League Provincial Deputy, Scara Njadayi, said they were still
patiently observing the case until it came to a conclusion.
We have goats – no kidding
t’s like a dream come true for us, people had been asking
us about the goats’ whereabouts for a long while and now
we are happy that they have arrived,” says an ecstatic
Mike Mamkeli.
Mamkeli heads the Makana Goat Farmers Co-operative and
said that the farmers could not contain their excitement when
a herd of 175 goats was delivered to Lower Gletwyn Farm two
weeks ago. The goats arrived in trucks from Cape Town-based
Stillerus Bokmelkery on 20 July and the farmers were given a
week-long training session on how to feed and look after them by
the supplier, Roelf Smith.
The dairy goats look healthy and have 51 kids with them. Heading
the herd are five rams; namely two Saanens, two Toggenbergs
and a British Empire. Mamkeli said that in the meantime there
are only three labourers who are looking after the goats but that
he was expecting some members of the co-operative who had also
recently been trained in Cape Town to put their skills into practice.
“We have not yet started milking the goats,” he added. While the
goat project is associated with eight farms, he said the project will
be piloted on one farm and will, over time, be extended to other
farms. The farms which are all situated in the Makana municipal
area are Koodoovale, Pershoek, Gletwyn, Broughton, Salemville,
Inneskilling, Greenfield and Alicedale. He also said that while Gletwyn
Farm, which is in the Manley Flats area, is good for grazing
they intend to build a milking parlour on Inneskilling Farm (behind
Extension 7, on the way to Fort Beaufort) where the actual dairy
operations would be run.
He added that they will start building sheds and other permanent
structures on Gletwyn Farm later this month, a process
which will eventually be extended to Inneskilling Farm and other
farms. However, the lack of infrastructure is not the only challenge
facing the emerging farmers as nature has also dealt them
a couple of setbacks.
Besides the lack of water on Gletwyn, the farmers have to
battle with a lack of feed for their goats. Mamkeli said none of
their suppliers in the Cacadu district cannot provide them with
lucerne, something which he attributes to the ongoing drought.
“The supplier in Alexandria said we have to wait until the end
of the month while others say, maybe until the beginning of September,”
he said. Luckily they get a constant supply of water from
Makana Municipality, which is also one of the partners of the goat
project. They also plan to apply to Eskom for power supply.
The Makana goat project was awarded a R4-million grant WORTH THE WAIT... Head of the Makana Goat Farmers Co-operative Mike Mamkeli holds two kids of
Unions protest over ‘jobs-for-pals policy’
Prudence Mini
Councillors, stay out of
it! was the message as
angry union members
picketed outside the City Hall
on Friday.
The South African Municipal
Workers and Independent
Municipal and Allied unions
were protesting against
the inclusion of councillors
in the process of appointing
staff – an issue brought
sharply into focus during recent
interviews for the crucial
post of human resources
manager.
Urging councillors to refrain
from “corrupt practices”,
and claiming their presence
on staff selection panels
opened the door to nepotism,
the unions addressed a petition
to Makana Mayor, Vumile
Lwana, demanding that
the municipality amend the
current policy and prevent
councillors from interviewing
and selecting ordinary staff
members, saying they “contaminated”
the process by
their involvement.
The origins of Friday’s
protest go back to 17 September,
when the Mayoral Committee
approved an amendment
to municipal policy that
brought councillors, formerly
excluded from the staff appointment
process, back on to
the selection panel. As part of
the briefing for a later debate
on this amendment, at a Special
Council meeting on Friday
5 November, the committee
heard a legal opinion from
On Saturday, the first suicide
the middle of a busy shopping
street causing people to run
has shocked society in a country
that has not experienced a terrorist
act in decades.
Swedish authorities are
throwing massive resources at
prosecuting a man accused of
2pm, Corporate Services Director Thabiso Klaas, Social Services
Thuleka Ngeleza arrived to receive a petition. Makana
Mayor Vumile Lwana was not present to address the union
capacity to address them on this issue. The union members
agreed to come back yesterday to receive communication.
City on ice No
way... it’s hot
What a relief, parking is no longer a problem at Pepper
Grove Mall, even on a Saturday morning. You
can drive right in and Pick n Park almost wherever
you want. Restaurants along High and New Streets
have tables available whenever you need one and the pub
of rodent and avian fame has once again become accessible
to town residents.
The sudden emptying of one half of the town can
be quite disquieting, even if you’ve seen it before. Grahamstown
feels like it should be called Ghost-town as
thousands of students take to the N2 in their shiny Polos,
slightly battered Mazdas, or in the case of the less privileged,
inter-city buses. Pupils attending boarding schools
have either gone home to Gauteng, or are already on
holiday in Cape Town, Ballito or Plett.
It is certainly a relief not having to cope with congestion
at the petrol stations and the supermarket tills – but
the empty houses where the students lived and made a
noise not so long ago look eerie and abandoned.
However, this is only half the story – the Grahamstown
West half. The other half, in the East, also experiences
a brusque change of mood, but in the opposite direction.
Friends and relatives who have been working in the large
metros so far away come back to their roots for the festive
season. In many cases, they return to their home town
with end-of-the-year bonuses, presents and other goodies
from the big cities.
At this time of the year, Grahamstown gets busier as
you move east. Pepper Grove becomes more conducive to
serene shopping, Church Square is still ticking over nicely
– but as you move down Beaufort Street towards Market
Square, business is booming. People are doing their lastminute
shopping, getting ready for family meals, parties
and Christmas celebrations.
High court move a gross injustice
Brin Brody
Past months have seen vigorous debate
in respect of the government’s intention
to move the seat of the high court in the
Eastern Cape from Grahamstown to Bhisho
(Superior Courts Bill 2010). It is important
that broader South African society is made
aware of a situation which, if enacted, will
not only have devastating repercussions
within the Grahamstown segment of Eastern
Cape society, but which could also create
a dangerous precedent for other areas
of the country. Albeit a widely supported
and demographically representative action
committee has issued a substantial memorandum
to the government which highlights
numerous meaningful reasons why such
a step would be devastating to Grahamstown’s
inhabitants, I highlight the following
issues:
•In 1994 former President Nelson Mandela
appointed the Hoexter commission to
investigate legal jurisdictions in the country.
The following quote from the fi ndings of this
commission is pertinent to the concerns of
many Grahamstown residents: “Grahamstown
is an economically depressed city in
which unemployment is rife. We fi nd that
the ripple effect of moving the seat of the
court away from Grahamstown would prove
crippling to the city. We fi nd further that to
close down the High Court in Grahamstown
completely would, in socio-economic terms,
be nothing short of catastrophic for a large
segment of the city’s community. It should
be pointed out, moreover, that in either
situation the brunt would be borne by the
socially and economically most disadvantaged
section of the community”.
•The present President of the Supreme
Write
Fraser's Camp treat for
senior citizens
The ACVV Senior Citizens recently undertook an outing to
the farm, New Hope, at Fraser's Camp. We were welcomed
by our hosts, Sid and Sandy Young, who went out of their way
to look after us. A splendid tea was enjoyed by all, follwed by
walks around the farm, where a variety of game was seen.
The seniors were treated to a magnificent braai, with a variety
of meats and salads, followed by dessert. The ACVV Senior
Citizens wishes to thank Sid and Sandy Young for opening their
home and going out of their way to ensure that everyone was
looked after. We would also like to thank the following businesses
for being so supportive in our outing: GBS Bank, Pick n
Pay, Grahamstown Pharmacy, Graham Hotel, Tip Top Butchery,
Fruit & Veg City and Pioneer Bottle Store. Many thanks to
Hoërskool PJ Olivier for being so supportive and assisting us
with transport.
Riekie Schoonbee
Thanks for Oakhaven gifts
Grahamstown and District War Memorial Association would
like to thank Pam Golding for Joy of Living Gifts for the residents
of Oakhaven.
Susan Schutte
Court of Appeal, President Lex Mpati, addressed
a memorandum to the erstwhile
minister in 1994 indicating that a move of
the seat would have severe consequences
for the administration of justice in the Eastern
Cape and this was supported by a well
motivated argument.
•In 2003 Chief Justice Chaskalson met
with the judges of the Eastern Cape and
they unanimously decided that the seat
should remain in Grahamstown. This was
endorsed by the erstwhile minister of justice,
Penual Maduna, who in turn advised
the Judicial Services Commission that he
would not only endorse the decision, but
would implement it forthwith (2003). The
judges had compromised and agreed that
the seat should remain in Grahamstown,
but that Bhisho should have a larger territorial
jurisdiction to ensure that all the high
courts in the Eastern Cape were viable.
•Not only is it perplexing that the government
will use large amounts of muchneeded
public funds to build totally new infrastructure
in Bhisho (R250 million) while
Grahamstown has excellent and recently
upgraded high court infrastructure, but it is
by no means a secret that Grahamstown’s
loss will not be Bhisho’s gain. The fact is
that, at present, many people working in
Bhisho actually live in East London. What
would the economic benefi t be to Bhisho if
the move went ahead
•What became of the premise that if something
is not broken, don't fi x it Ironically,
while the layout of Grahamstown is conducive
to smooth and effi cient functioning, it
stands to reason that Bhisho, an ill-planned
creation of the apartheid era, is, in respect
of geographical layout, absurd. Grahamstown
has very effectively acted as the seat
of the high court for almost 150 years.
•While my fi rst point adequately explains
how the poorest of Grahamstown’s inhabitants
will be affected, it should also be mentioned
that the legal fraternity in Grahamstown
contributes in many ways on a daily
basis to the town's many nationally important
learning institutions. The ripple effect
of decimation will thus even extend deeply
into the community’s prestigious education
domain.
•There is a healthy separation of powers at
present in respect of the seats of political
(Bhisho) and judicial (Grahamstown) power
in the province. There is ongoing public debate
pertinent to political interference in
the judiciary on national level.
There are more questions than answers
in this debate and it is clear that the longterm
consequences of this move have not
been well considered.
In fact, it is reiterated that this decision
is totally contrary to informed advice by a
commission of enquiry and the erstwhile
chief justice. Sadly, while most lawyers
leaving Grahamstown will continue with
their professions in other communities, it is
the many who will be left unemployed who
will languish far into the future, if the move
occurs. I repeat the concluding remarks of
the Chairman of the Action Committee, Dr
Sizwe Mabizela, in a submission to parliament:
“The committee submits that for the
State knowingly to infl ict such devastation
on a viable but vulnerable town would
amount to a gross injustice”.
Brin Brody writes in his capacity as
My cure for street kid
menace
Going out at night time in Grahamstown usually entails being
accosted by street kids, begging in a very aggressive manner.
These children move in packs and harass people to give them
some change.
Where are the authorities Shouldn’t the social workers
and police approach their parents and try to convince them
to leave the streets, or take the children to shelters This
problem has been neglected for a long time. The departments
of health and social development should protect children from
exploitation and from adults using children for financial gain
by begging at street corners. They should ensure that the
children get to a place of safety, where they can go to school
and get properly fed.
This is all the result of not having a family planning
programme in place to enlighten parents about not having unwanted
and unplanned children. If you cannot even look after
yourself, how dare you conceive a child who has to run around
the streets begging for food.
Wake up and get birth-control services from your local
clinic to stop all these unwanted children making my and other
people's life hell.
New tented camp in Addo
Elephant National Park
for a real bush experience
STAFF REPORTER
Visitors to Addo Elephant National Park can now experience
the wildlife there in a new way – by spending the
night among the animals.
The Spekboom Tented Camp, which has been under construction
for the past few months, is inside the Spekboom Hide
in the Park’s Main Game Area.
Five fixed tents on decks, with two beds each, will give visitors
the experience of listening to the sounds of the bush, surrounded
by wildlife, away from the busy main camp. Visitors
can also check the hide’s waterhole for nocturnal wildlife.
Each tent, surrounded by pristine thicket bush, has two
beds, two camp chairs, a braai unit, a table and a solar-powered
light. There are communal showers and toilets, as well as a
wash-basin a short walk from the tents.
Visitors staying in the tents can either bring all their own
equipment, or can hire a box of cutlery, crockery, cooking utensils
and bedding. There is no electricity at the tents and visitors
are advised to bring their own torches.
Day visitors will still be able to access the Spekboom Hide
Festive Wishes
What’s inside
Let it be a happy time for
all Makana’s residents
The time to be merry is once again upon
us. The end of the year season gives all
of us an opportunity to look back at the
year about to conclude, to determine
whether it has been good or bad. The
outcome of such a review is always used
as an encouragement for better things to
come in the following year, or to hope for
things to improve.
It is the essence of humankind to
strive for improved quality of life – and
the municipality plays a signifi cant role
in making such aspirations a reality. In
terms of our fi nancial year, this time of
the year marks the halfway point. It becomes
signifi cant to us, as it shows the
achievements and challenges and gives
us an opportunity to re-strategise.
On 26 November 2010 government at
all spheres launched the 16 Days of Activism
Campaign to highlight abuse in society,
particularly of children and women.
It is my wish that all residents of Makana
get to enjoy the festive season and not
be victims or perpetrators of abuse.
2010 has been a diffi cult year in
terms of the academic calendar and we
hope that when results at all levels come
out, we’ll have reason to celebrate. Let’s
all make sure that we do not over indulge
during the festivities that communities
usually celebrates during this time of the
year, including weddings and homecoming
of the initiates. Let us all heed the
slogans of the Arrive Alive Campaign:
Don’t drink and drive, and speed kills.
Save water, it is precious!
2 Festive Wishes
Celebrate being part of
the world’s biggest
social movement
Ons weet nie of Jesus presies
op 25 Desember gebore is nie.
Toe Hy gebore is, was daar in elk
geval nie ‘n kalender soos ons
dit vandag het nie. Die geboorte
was egter so ‘n fenomenale gebeurtenis
in die geskiedenis van
die wêreld, dat dit die telling van
jare, maande en dae bepaal
het. Jesus is met ander woorde
tweeduisend-en-tien jaar gelede
gebore. Die ongeloofl ike wonder
is dat ongeveer 2 biljoen mense oor die hele wêreld (omtrent
30% van die wêreldbevolking) sy geboortedag vier op hierdie
dae. Dis nie niks nie. Dis groot. Dis genade. En bemoediging.
En troos.
It is indeed huge to be part of such a widespread and pervasive
movement. We are a fellowship and we like to call each other
brothers and sisters. We do so because we also call God our Father
through Jesus Christ, the Son and incarnation of God. Two
billion people believe they are the body of Christ and that their
role is to serve, like He came to serve. May we be only a blessing
to the world we live in, and to the other two-thirds of our fellow
human beings. May we bring light and understanding in our
world. May Christmas 2010 indeed be a celebration of “Glory
to God in the highest and on Earth peace to men, on whom his
favour rests”. (Luke 2)
Thank you to all our fellow Grahamstonians for your support,
during 2010, of the many projects and functions through which
we strive to serve our local community and to worship God. May
God bless you all. May you have a peaceful, safe and gracious
Christmas season and a most blessed 2011.
Festive Wishes
3
As many of you may know, I was born in the UK (Manchester)
and came to South Africa when I was 12. I have never really
returned, so my memories of those days are somewhat distant.
However, the availability of the latest technology has revived
some of those memories.
My mum and I spent a Sunday afternoon looking on Google
Maps at the houses we had lived in – even the one I was born
in - and some looked a little the worse for wear. One in particular,
Hazel Hall Lane, was where I spent most of my childhood.
I remember walking down the country lane and playing in the
fi elds that are still the same as they were 36 years ago. I remember
Christmas in that house. I remember walking through
gently falling snow, building snowmen – lots of smiling faces
and trips to gran and gramps in an old Ford Anglia that was so
rusted that if you pulled back the threadbare carpet you could
see the road.
But that is not how Christmas has been for a long time. I
have other memories of hot Christmas days in the pool, playing
with my kids. Now my own children have grown up and it’s
harder for us all to get together at Christmas. Yet what could
compare to having Christmas in a country restaurant (my favourite)
close to Grahamstown, where a tame zebra walks into
the dining room. Very different, but still a great memory.
Christmas is a time for family – but also for memories –
perhaps a time for discovering God more in our lives. Sometimes
the business in our lives makes God seem so far away,
but when we stop the hustle and bustle we can experience
(quoting Macy Gray) “beauty in the world”.
I understand that the fi rst Christmas was not necessarily
how it’s often portrayed on Christmas cards - all sanitised. I
know that the Christmas message is much deeper. But sometimes
we fail to see the simple message – that “God so loved
the world that He sent his one and only son, so that whosoever
believes on him shall not perish but have everlasting life“ (John
3:16).
God loves us. May we remember that in the good and the
bad times – whether we have few possessions or lots; when we
feel that we are in over our heads, or when everything is going
just fi ne.
And when we look back, may we also remember that God
brought us through all of that, and that even some of what we
are going through now, diffi cult though it may be will become
happy memories.
With Christmas peace.
Festive wishes from the editor’s desk
Dear Reader,
The staff of Grocott’s Mail would like to thank you for your loyalty over the past twelve
months. We know that sometimes we make you angry, and at times our coverage is not
quite what you had expected, but we hope that in spite of the occasional slip-ups, we bring
value to you – our reader. Our aim is to provide news and information in an interesting
and readable format to all the members of the Makana community.
We do so out of a sense of commitment to the community we serve because we are an
integral part of it. We live and work here, we send our children to schools in the town and
we do our shopping at local establishments, so we are able to tell you about incidents and
issues that are directly relevant to you.
Almost every day, people who live in Makana will either come into the newspaper, phone or e-mail us with
story ideas. Grocott’s Mail makes a concerted effort to publish your opinions and your photographs. Residents
know who we are and, in all too many cases, they know where we live.
You are not only our readers, advertisers or clients; but you are also our friends, families and colleagues. The
point is that we have a real and vested interest in the well-being of this community, so when we wish our readers
a joyful festive season, we do so with the deepest sincerity.
When the economic downturn squeezed budgets, we too had to tighten our belts; when our country celebrated
a successful hosting of the Soccer World Cup, we were at the Public Viewing Areas watching and cheering;
when members of our community passed on, we mourned with their families and when people from our town
reached great heights in the academic and sporting fields, we enthusiastically applauded their achievements.
We wish you all a fabulous, enjoyable festive season and hope that you like this special Festive Wishes supplement
as much as we do.
Choir boosts Christmas Cheer Fund
Thanks to the Pro Carmine Christmas Concert, the Grocott’s
Mail Christmas Cheer was given a huge boost last week.
The choir handed over R2 012 from the concert and that,
together with a few more donations trickling in, has brought
the fund to R11 198.18. Jeff Grocott urged local residents
to support the Christmas Cheer fund, which he said went to
“a wonderful cause and is going to help the needy”. Grocott
thanked the businesses and the public who had already contributed
to the fund.
This year’s Christmas Cheer may well be on its way to
a record-breaking fund total. In 2008 the largest amount
of R16 148 was collected and given to Child and Family
Welfare.
5
Residents are urged to dig deep into their pockets (or e-
wallets) and give generously to this year’s fund. This year’s
benefi ciary is the Raphael Centre, an organisation dedicated
to helping people living with HIV/Aids.
The centre is currently gearing up for its Christmas party
for the children tomorrow and the centre hopes to give each
of the 300 children expected to attend a present. They were
still looking for almost 200 gifts by the end of last week. Father
Christmas will be at the Christmas party and a mini train
and other forms of entertainment will be laid on. The Department
of Education and Makana Municipality have provided
the food for the party.
Keeping your pet safe – the SPCA can help
SPCA GRAHAMSTOWN offers some advice to the public for the
care of your animals over the holiday season.
If you are going away for the holidays, the SPCA hopes you
have made a plan in advance for the care of your animals. If you
leave it to the last minute, you may be unlucky and your pets may
suffer as a result.
All pets need to be looked after while you are away for a few
days or weeks – not only your dogs and cats. Don’t forget your
guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits, fi sh, rats and birds.
If you are boarding your pets at a kennel, all pets must be
vaccinated, and veterinary cards presented. Boarding your animals
while you are away should give you peace of mind that your
pets are well looked-after and have company and plenty of activity
going on around them
The SPCA Kennels offer boarding with beds, blankets and an
infra-red lamp for cold nights. All
animals in our care are provided with fresh water and nourishing
food daily. Kennels are cleaned and scrubbed daily. We have
volunteers who exercise and socialise with our dogs and cats, by
taking them for walks, or spending time playing and interacting
with them.
If you are having a house-sitter caring for the animals, check
that your property is secured, with no gates left open, and no
holes in fences.
It’s a good idea to leave written instructions for the housesitter,
or the person looking after the pets, so they know exactly
how to look after your animals. You can include details such as
feeding routines, exercise programmes, play preferences, and
washing schedules.
In case your pet does go walkabout, make sure that whoever
is looking after your animal knows our contact number:
046 622 3233 / 079 037 3466, as well as the vet’s number –
046 622 6743. Putting up notices at Pick n Pay and Hoof &
Hound, may help you trace a lost pet.
First and foremost your pet should have a collar and indentifi
cation tag. This ensures that should it somehow get out of
your property, it at least stands a chance of being reunited with
you. Even if you cannot afford an expensive tag or have not got
the time to go to the pet shop, please, please clearly write your
number on the collar or get one of the inexpensive plastic key
tags. A few rand could help to save untold misery and heartbreak.
If your animals are frightened by thunder and fi reworks, don’t
let them suffer alone. Please make arrangements for them to be
kept inside the house in the company of a human being.
These noises terrify some animals, and if they are left alone
outside, they may become disoriented and confused, escaping
from your property and running many miles across many obstacles
in their terror.
Make it a happy
Christmas for
dogs and cats
Thank you for this opportunity to highlight the desperate plight of
Grahamstown’s cats and dogs, especially at this time of year. Many
are left behind without adequate care, as their owners head off for
their happy holidays. Departing students leave behind the cats and
dogs – many of them pregnant – which they have acquired during
their time here, without thought for their future. You know what
your animals have needed while you were here: That need does not
stop because you are away on holiday, or have left town. Please
make proper arrangements well in advance for someone to feed
and care for your cats and dogs while you are away, or board them
at kennels. If you are leaving town for good, please don’t leave your
animals behind unattended. If you are really unable to fi nd them a
good home, or take them with you, please surrender them to the
SPCA who might, with a bit of luck, fi nd them a new home.
Whether you are here over the holidays or away, remember that the
days can get very hot and dogs, especially, need proper shelter from
the sun and additional water. Just remember that the basic daily
needs of cats and dogs are not so very different from your own.
I appeal to you to spread good cheer by considering the welfare of
all cats and dogs at this time of year. Perhaps in lieu of Christmas
gifts for a loved one who already has it all, you could sponsor the
cost of a sterilisation for a less-privileged canine or feline citizen
Wishing you and your families a peaceful season
Lorna Grant
for The Grahamstown Feral Cat Project
A clean dog is a healthy dog
CARE:
Please take extra care of your pets during the upcoming festive
season. This can be done by providing a safe, calm and clean environment
for them. You should ensure that your property is well
secured and that there are no holes in your fence, through which
your dog could escape. Please do not leave your dogs/ cats/ hamsters
etc at home unattended. There are really nice boarding kennels
in our area, which will provide you and your pet with peace of
mind over the Christmas period.
EXERCISE & FUN:
Pets enjoy play time, praise and walks, so take them out to the
beach, or on a hiking trail. They will love you for it. Spending time
with your pets out in the garden has amazing relaxation powers.
Throw a ball or a toy for them and see how they enjoy it.
HEALTH:
It is extremely important to get your pet vaccinated and dewormed
before going away on holiday, or before dropping them off at a
boarding kennel. Don’t be tempted to save money by skipping your
pet’s vaccinations or deworming. Prevention is far cheaper than
cure.
SAFETY:
Christmas celebrations can lead to many injuries, either at home
or when outdoors. Pets can swallow Christmas decorations, eat
turkey bones/ chicken bones, chew through electrical cables, get
into rubbish bins etc. Injuries from such incidents are commonly
seen by vets at this time of year. So keep any temptations away
from curious pets.
still have their dew claws – the claws on the side of the foot. These
need to be checked regularly, so they don’t grow too long and start
growing into the pads of the feet.
It is also very important to note that should you be spending
time in an area where ticks are prevalent, you should check your
dogs when you return from your outings and that you take along
with you a dip, tick-prevention collar or some form of topical treatment.
Prevention is always better than cure. Dogs also get bitten
by mosquitoes, so keep them indoors if you are staying in an area
where there are a lot of these pests.
If dogs have long ears, for example, spaniels and bassets, it
is very important to ensure, if they have been on the beach and
have been swimming, that all moisture is removed from the ear,
as this can cause ear infections. Ear infections are also common
in German Shepherds
A clean dog is a healthy dog.
LASTLY
Don’t ever buy a pet at Christmas: Taking on a pet is a big commitment
and never buy a pet as a gift for someone else.
I wish you all a very merry Christmas and an awesome 2011.
Thanks for your support during 2010. May your furry family
member bring you joy and happiness over the festive
season.
GROOMING:
Having your dog groomed before you go away is always advisable.
It is a good idea to trim long fur in the summer so that when they
go to the beach it is easier to keep them clean.
It is also important to note that when you and your dog return
home from the beach, you rinse – preferably bath – your dog to
remove all sea water and sand. This can cause skin problems if
it’s left on a dog’s skin for an extended period. I suggest bathing
them every second day with a hypoallergenic shampoo designed
for dogs. Do not use human shampoo on dogs.
It is important to have your dogs’ nails clipped to ensure that
no injury is sustained from running around on the beach or on
hikes. Another important thing to remember is that some dogs
Brandy Egg Nog
The following eggnog recipe
will teach you how to make
it the traditional Christmas
Egg Nog way – the way my
mom made hers – with a
bit of alcohol. This specifi c
alcoholic version specifi cally
uses brandy, which is the
way I am used to it.
When making eggnog with
this recipe, it is most important that you brew with
love. I’m sure that was what made it taste so good.
Ingredients
• 6 eggs, separated
• 1/2 c super fi ne sugar
• 1/4 tsp salt
• 2 ts vanilla
• 2 c brandy
• 1 c milk
• 2 c whipping cream
• Nutmeg
How to make Homemade Brandy Egg Nog
Beat egg yolks, 1/4 cup sugar, nutmeg, salt and
vanilla together with rotary beater or electric mixer
until very thick and light yellow.
Slowly beat in brandy and milk. Cover and chill
overnight.
Shortly before serving, beat egg whites to soft
peaks.
Gradually beat in remaining 1/4 cup sugar with
same beater, beat cream to soft peaks.
Fold meringue into beaten cream.
Then slowly pour on chilled brandy mixture
folding in gently.
Christmas pudding
Ingredients
• 350 g sultanas
• 350 g raisins, or currants
• 150 g dried fi gs, chopped
• 125 g mixed candied peel, chopped
• 100 g dried apricots, chopped
• 75 g dark glacé cherries, halved
• 150 ml brandy, plus some for fl aming
• 2 apples, or quince
• 2 oranges, juice and zest
• 6 eggs
• 250 g shredded suet
• 350 g soft muscovado sugar
• 250 g fresh breadcrumbs
• 175 g self-raising fl our
• 1 tsp mixed spice
Method
1. You will need two 1.5 litre plastic pudding basins and lids, buttered, two R1 coins, scrupulously
scrubbed, two circles of greaseproof paper, buttered, large enough to cover the top of
each pudding, with a single pleat folded down the centre of each.
2. Soak the sultanas, raisins or currants, fi gs, candied peel, apricots and cherries in the brandy
overnight. The liquid won’t cover the fruit, but no matter; just give it a good stir now and again.
3. Mix the grated apples, orange juice and zest, beaten eggs, suet, sugar, crumbs and fl our in
a very large mixing bowl, then stir in the soaked fruit and the spice. Divide the mixture between
the buttered pudding basins, tucking the coins in as you go. Cover with the greaseproof paper,
folded with a pleat in the centre.
4. Pop the lids on and steam for three and a half hours. Allow the puddings to cool, then remove
the greaseproof paper, cover tightly with clingwrap and the plastic lid and store in a cool,
dry place till Christmas.
5. To reheat: steam the puddings for a further three and a half hours. Turn out and fl ame with
brandy.
updates on key policy and restructuring initiatives such
as the Local Government Turn-Around Strategy.
of the recent South African Local Government
where municipalities met to discuss issues in “We are all voted to serve, whether you are a
such as matters of service delivery chal-
According to Lwana, a debate within Salga kick in, in terms of implementation. This is
not treated in the same way as public servants
according to the Public Service Act of added that the SPS will hopefully also reconcile
Seventh Day Adventists explain their festive stance
Salinda Saki-neko
Apart from the fact that no self-respecting shepherd would
have been out in the fields with their sheep in the middle
of winter in Palestine, which brought into question the
purported month of Jesus’s birth, 25 December was originally a
pagan festival, Christianised only 354 years later.
These arguments, added to rampant commercialisation,
are the reasons members of the Seventh Day Adventists say
they do not celebrate Christmas.
This Christian denomination uses evidence from the Bible
and history to dismiss the importance assigned to the day by
other groups. Principal of Bavumeleni Seventh Day Adventist
School, Sondezwa Hobongwana, explains: “We do not know the
date when Christ was born, the Bible does not mention it, and
therefore we don’t celebrate it.” She said Palestine, the country
of Christ’s birth, was ice cold in December. “No sheperds
would have been out in the fields with their flocks in that kind of
weather,” she said.
“The Bible tells us that shepherds were staying out in the
fields overnight when Jesus was born (Luke 2:8) – but in that
PORT Alfred School Hall will be the scene of a blast from the
past, as South Africa’s longest-running pop group, Four Jacks
and a Jill, go back on stage after 28 years to treat audiences
to old favourites, as well as some new songs, in a Lions Club
fundraiser on 27 and 28 December. The show starts at 7.30pm.
Buy tickets (R100) from Leach Pharmacy, or call Lloyd at 082
467 4310. Bring a picnic basket and there will be bar facilities.
The band will also play in Port Elizabeth (20 to 23 December)
at The Boardwalk Vodacom Amphitheatre, bookings through
Computicket, and East London (29 to 30 December) at the Guild
Theatre, bookings at the Guild Theatre.
Founded in 1964 when solo singer Glenys Lynne teamed up
with long-haired rockers The Zombies, the group morphed in
1965 to the clean-cut Four Jacks and a Jill. Their first single,
Jimmy Come Lately, in 1966, was an instant hit on local radio
stations. They were the first South African band to receive a
Gold Disc for record sales of a million. With their second single,
Master Jack, the band became the first South African group to
have two hits simultaneously on Springbok’s Top 20 hit parade.
Newsroom to take a
break
Grocott’s Mail is going to take a break over the
festive season. The last edition of Grocott’s Mail for
2010 will come out on Tuesday, 21 December and
the first edition of 2011 will be published on
part of the world it would have been far too cold at night to do so
in December. The sheperds would have sought shelter from the
heavy winter rains for themselves and their flocks,” Hobongwana
argued.
Thembelani Koliti, a member of the church, explained that
the holiday’s pagan origins, and the lack of reference to that
date in the Bible invalidated Christmas in their eyes.
“For pagan Rome, 25 December was a day when they held
festivities in honour of the rebirth of their gods. In the Western
world, the birthday of Jesus Christ has been celebrated on 25
December only since AD 354, partly to replace the pagan worship
that was commonplace in those days. “It was in the Western
church that the birth of Christ was first associated with this
Great excitment ahead of the launch of the new
Grahamstown Redwood Spur!
The grand opening of Grahamstown’s brand new Redwood
Spur, as well as the extensively renovated Graham Hotel and a
smart little Graham Mall, has been changed to Wednesday, 15
December, 2010. The old 170-seater, double-storey Spur (near
the St George and St Michael Cathedral) closed on Sunday, 5
December, but had to reopen due to contactors falling behind. It
now moves up High Street to become a much larger, 230-seater
Redwood Spur.
It will fill a 450m2 open-plan space in the Graham Hotel complex.
Eugene Repinz, representing three local owners, says: “We
are extremely excited in anticipation of welcoming you all to our
new venue! Come in and visit us! We have built a brand-new store
to the latest Spur specification. We tailor-designed it for our Grahamstown
customers. After much local and national research,
we came up with a lekka mix of elements.
“We’ve put in a lot of fun infrastructure for children and families.
There will be soft play toys, a 3.2m2 square modular play
system which is a large, brightly coloured complex of pipes and
slides, and we have two indoor mountain-climbing walls which
are child-safe. They are only 2m high with a large landing pad
and easy hand holds.
“There will be a 42-inch flat-screen TV showing cartoon network
all the time, and 10 Sony play stations with dual controls.
We will have our much-loved activity packs with crayons and
Spur’s famous drawing sheets.”
The eureka moment came when they decided to put the play
area right in the middle of the business. “We’ve constructed the
entire 36m2 play area bang in the centre of the restaurant and
encased the whole edifice in thick safety glass so that the kids
are always visible to their parents or guardians -- and we have
CCTV cameras covering hard-to-see areas to ensure that that the
kids are never out of sight.”
There’s also a glassed-in space for smokers with separate
ventilation – “We pump in fresh air and extract the smoke -- and
we air condition it.
“When our customers arrive at the Graham Hotel
they will see our big, illuminated LED (energy efficient)
Redwood Spur sign, plus another box sign for the Graham
Mall.
“Entrance to the new Redwood Spur will be
through the mall in roughly the same space where
the old door to the Calabash used to be, but this time
it will be through a wide glass door which opens onto
polished cream porcelain tiles. There is a ramp for
wheelchairs.
“Straight ahead will be a pleasing fusion of history
and modernity with Victorian lights done in brushed
stainless steel. The charming old hanging signage will
extend from the walls, but instead of filigree, we went
for brushed steel. You will see four boutique shops;
Europcar car rentals, Blunden Coach Tours, and very
exciting Eastern Cape tenant, Swift Travel.
“They are a black family-owned business and
they’re rocking the Eastern Cape. One of the sons,
Gugu Tom, will personally run the Grahamstown outlet.”
In another smart choice of tenant, local hair stylist,
Rika van Loggerenberg will open her, funky hair
salon, The Cutting Lounge.
“We are delighted to have tenants like this; our vision
has been for a hospitality hub in and around the
Graham Hotel. We want businesses to benefit directly
from each other. It’s in our business plan.”
Redwood Spur customers’ first sight will be of
a shiny, L-shaped front counter created out of burnished
black Rustenburg granite. On the right will be
a serious buffet counter with polished stainless steel
chaffing (under-heated) dishes for hot, farm breakfasts.
Further along the line of sight will be a built-in
“polar well” for displays of Spur’s favourite salads,
which will be offered at selected times and on special
occasions.
“The new décor is all about being and feeling lighter;
warm oak and pine bulkheads and balustrades offset
by stainless steel,” says Eugene. An entire wall has
been covered in three massive, faux cow hides embellished with
Spur decals and bedecked with LED strip lighting.
Three Indian totem poles stand out with their crazy-wild Spur
designs and a 2.5m Indian canoe “glides” across another section
of wall!
The entire décor package has been installed which was
brought up from Cape Town last week and looks far better than
anticipated.
Moving and rebuilding Grahamstown’s Redwood Spur has created
six permanent new jobs, including the promotion of Zimisa
“Zimi” Sandi from waitress to manager. Other new jobs will be for
cooks and waiters.
Eugene says: “We are going on a huge marketing drive to promote
our weekly specials which offer something different every
day. We want to stimulate our Redwood Spur Kids Club with our
Sizzling Studies Programme, where we bring kids in and do an
hour-and-a-half educational project on how to run a restaurant.
They flip burgers, make ice-cream and milkshakes, get shown
around the shop and meet staff. Internet users can tap into Redwood
Spur’s free internet wireless access, which is provided for
customers. Three LCD HD High Definition television sets will be
placed around the restaurant with sport running all the time, and
there will a state-of-the-art sound system. “Our toilets will be accessible
to all customers and we have three tables designed tables
for the disabled.
“We have a lot of school groups coming in so we designed the
restaurant around this local factor. We have two 32-seater tables
running next to each other in one bay.
Eugene says the research has taken four years.
“I visited about 40 Spurs, including every Spur in Johannesburg,
Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein, George, Knysna,
East London and Durban. “The kids loved it …” – Backyard Media
Pagan holiday,” Koliti said.
Koliti argued that every event and ritual to be honoured
had been mentioned in the Bible. For example, the ritual of holy
communion was justified by its mention in Luke 22:19 (Jesus
said, “Do this in remembrance of me”) and the practice of honouring
every seventh day as sacred (“Remember the Sabbath
day to keep it holy.”)
Of the commercialisation of Christmas, Hobongwana said
people who bought Christmas goods at this time made businesses
rich, while they remained poor.
Port Alfred
residents
get 500 houses
MERRY XMAS... Sixty orphans and vulnerable children at the Jabez Health Aids Centre were showered with presents at
their Christmas party recently. They were shown a film about the life of Jesus, and listened as various benefactors gave
them some words of encouragement. Caregiver Nofumene Ncula said, “My dream is to see these children becoming
happier in their lives. Today my heart feels stronger, because this event has been a success.” Another caregiver, Noncedo
Mangesana, said of the children, “We wish people could recognise their importance in our lives.” Photo: Thembani Onceya
Christmas came early for the residents of Port Alfred,
when Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale handed
over 500 houses to the community last Tuesday.
With the houses came a promise from Sexwale that the pace
of the delivery of services and houses would be accelerated.
“This project is an indication of how this new government is
going to do things; we are not going to allow a slow pace in the
provision of service delivery... our people cannot and must not
wait any longer for decent shelter,” he said.
Sexwale told residents that he shared in their hardship and
was aware of the difficulties they faced without proper housing
or services.
“I cannot sleep in my house properly if my people are homeless,
or when they are suffering in their shacks, unprotected
from the weather when it is rainy or windy,” he said.
Five hundred houses have been built in the area since April
and the project’s target is 5 000 houses – both rental and bonded.
Schools, clinics and business venues also form part of the
development.
However, the rollout of the remaining 4 500 homes is on hold
until additional infrastructure is provided by the municipality.
Of particular concern, according to housing officials, was
the anticipated additional demand on the water supply. Major
waterworks, such as a desalination plant to treat sea water,
a plant to clean river water, or the construction of a new dam
would be required to service the new development. – BuaNews
STEPHEN PENNEY
Roy Francis was named the Sportsman
of the Year at Swallows rugby club’s annual
awards evening recently. Francis
has captained the side since 2000. According to
Swallows secretary, Phillip Oerson, Francis is
a good leader and a good rugby player, who set
an example to the side.
Guest speaker, Simphiwe Baninzi (president
of South Eastern Districts Rugby Union)
spoke about sports development.
“An amateur in sport competes for the love
of sport alone, while the professional competes
for money. However, the problem with these
definitions is that it is hard to do the first without
the second,” said Baninzi.
Baninzi spoke of how, in the past, sportsmen
and -women often paid their own way,
while referees would endure abuse even
though they were volunteers.
Baninzi spoke of the fact that sport was
now run like a business, in which there were
CEOs and technical staff, and that players,
even at lower levels, expected to receive some
form of incentive.
Part of this model was the “headhunting”
practice of approaching good
players while they were still at school
Kids score as coaches get coached
Stephen penney
Dozens of coaches from around the Cacadu district descended
on the Rhodes University campus for a youth
soccer coaching course, run in partnership with the Department
of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, and the Stars
in their Eyes Foundation.
Formed in 2005 with the Western Cape government, the
foundation became involved in soccer when it was announced
that South Africa would host the 2010 World Cup. Eltojn Hart,
its managing director, said the foundation’s programme for children
included support for youth coaches, as well as life skills
training.
Some coaches were selected through the South African
Football Association Cacadu, and some through the department.
Those selected work mainly with youth soccer teams.
The coaching course started on Monday 6 December and
ended last weekend. Morning theory sessions were followed by
hitting the field for practicals. In the afternoons, the coaches
were back in class to recap, before going back on to the field –
this time working with children.
Among the coaching staff was former Banyana Banyana
captain, Desiree Ellis.
Anda Ngcebetsha, district co-ordinator for the Department
of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture’s Mass Participation Programme
said the emphasis had been on how the coaches should
deal with children.
The coaching course ended on Saturday with a mini soccer
tournament, in which more than 150 school children played.
During this event, the coaches were expected to identify
problems and work with their teams to solve them. Ngcebetsha
said the aim was now to have each region participate in tournaments
within the various age groups, and to end the season with
a district tournament.
The coaches were awarded certificates at the end of the
course.
with Manley Flats winning on the last ball of
a super over, Manley Flats comfortably beat
