Mr C Pittaway – Head of Sixth Form
“The choices and decisions you are about to make
will affect your options in further education and your
possible career choice. It is important that you should
enjoy the courses that you choose and have some
aptitude for the subjects. However, remember that
your choice of course may determine your future
career path.
The sixth form team is committed to supporting
students throughout their time in the college. They
offer differing levels of support from monitoring
progress, guidance on time management and
planning, career and university advice and personal
support. We strive to support students to achieve their
personal aims, whether this takes one, two or three
years. Personal tutoring is one of our strengths.
This guide will give you and your parents important
information that will help you make an appropriate
choice but you should also be ready to seek advice
from subject teachers and careers staff. You will
want to be as fully informed as possible from the
beginning.
We look forward to receiving your application to join
Sixth Form Life
Rights and Responsibilities
As with everything in life, your time as a
sixth former at Ifield carries many rights and
responsibilities. As a sixth form student you
have the right to dress in your own clothes,
with that you have a responsibility to be a role
model to the students in years 7 to 11.
You have the right to non direct study periods
with the responsibility to use those periods
wisely by doing homework, coursework and
private study. You also have the right to
a private area within the college with the
responsibility to respect those facilities and
the people who use them.
The Sixth Form Council
Each sixth form tutor group elects two
members to sit on the Sixth Form Council.
They carry the responsibility for monitoring
the Sixth Form Centre, organising social and
charitable events and considering requests for
money to be spent from the sixth form fund.
The sixth form also has two representatives
on the College Council.
Library
All sixth form students are able to borrow from the
library which has a large number of resources to
support sixth form courses. These include textbooks
and books for further reading, newspapers and
magazines. Many of the magazines taken, such as
“Chemistry Review”, “Psychology Review” etc. are
designed specifically to support students studying for
A levels. There is also a collection of fiction and a
number of DVDs.
The library’s computerised catalogue is networked
on computers across the school, meaning that
students can check the resources held with ease.
The catalogue also gives some links to appropriate
websites. Students have access to the Internet,
Encarta Reference library, giving online articles, atlas,
dictionary and multimedia features and networked
CD-ROMs on the state of the art library computers.
The library also holds a collection of up-to-date
university and college prospectuses and guides to
universities. Further information on careers is available
in the adjacent careers library. Students also have
access to careers information online. Sixth Form
students are able to study in the library at all times
except when the library has been booked for class
use. There is a qualified librarian based full-time in the
library to assist students with their research.
There has never been a more exciting time to
be a sixth former at Ifield Community College.
September 2005 saw the opening of the
brand new, state of the art, Ifield Community
College.
In the new college, the students in the sixth
form enjoy a wide range of facilities.
They have access to:
• Two dedicated computer suites with up
to date computers.
Courses & Qualifications
Courses
In the Sixth Form we offer a wide range of
courses at different levels. Table 1 shows
what type of courses are at each of the
different levels.
Level 2
Some students who have not achieved 5 A* - C
grades at GCSE may wish to improve their
qualifications by selecting Level 2 courses
such as GCSEs, or BTEC First Diplomas.
These courses are run for 1 year. After they
are completed, students can progress on to
Level 3 courses, gain employment or modern
apprenticeships.
“On From 16”
If you’re not sure you want
to stay on at school, go
to college or find a full time
job, then the “On From 16”
scheme is for you. “On From 16”
is the shared Level 2 curriculum programme
in Crawley. It provides you with access to a
wider range of courses, allowing you to ‘mix
and match’ courses giving you a tailor made
programme of study, whilst continuing to
receive the support and guidance from your
‘home’ school.
If you are interested then you need to decide
which school ‘home’ base best suits you.
Choose the courses you want to study and
apply early to your ‘home’ school.
Level 3
Most students who stay on in the sixth form
will normally select a programme of four
Advanced Subsidiary (AS) or BTEC National
courses from the wide range available. The
second year of study enables students to
gain full A Levels in these subjects, with the
added flexibility to drop to three or pick up a
new AS.
Each AS/A Level carries points. The number
of points you get depends on your results
at the end of the course. If you apply for a
degree, each individual university will say how
many points they require for you to take the
course. Table 2 shows the value of points for
each course.
How To Apply
Ifield students
Prior to the Sixth Form Open Day in November you will
have the opportunity to look through this prospectus
with your form tutor and parents. The Open Day will
enable you to discuss your options with the individual
subject teachers and gain further information about all
the courses on offer.
You will then be asked to complete the enclosed
application form. Sixth Form tutors will be available to
offer any advice needed. The application form, with
your first choice of courses, must be returned to your
form tutor by the end of December.
In January, you will receive confirmation of your
application to the Sixth Form for 2013/2014. You will
then be offered an interview with one of the Sixth Form
Team to ensure your courses match your plans for the
future and to discuss your mock exam results.
Finally, you will receive a letter in the Spring Term which
notifies you of our decision, listing any changes made
during your interview and stating that your application is
dependant on your GCSE results.
Students new to the college
Students wishing to apply for a place at Ifield are
advised to attend the Sixth Form Open Evening. This
will give you the opportunity to speak to the teachers
here at Ifield and to meet the team.
Your completed application form will need to be
submitted to the college by the end of the autumn
term. Following receipt of this form, you will be offered
an interview with one of the team. After the process,
you will receive a letter notifying you of our decision.
Late applications
Applications will be accepted during the spring and
summer term. However, you should be aware that
by this stage some courses may be full.
Disclaimer
There may be times when courses cannot be offered,
either because of staffing or student numbers.
Therefore, Ifield Community College reserves the
right to change or cancel any courses listed in this
prospectus.
AS Blocks – Provisional 29/05/12
It is not possible for every subject to be available during every
lesson on the timetable. Therefore, some subjects are taught
at the same time as others.
The table above shows which subjects clash in the AS
timetable 2012/13. As you can see AS Art textiles (in block A)
clashes with AS English literature (also in block A). Therefore,
we would strongly recommend that subjects in the same block
are not applied for. If two clashing subjects are chosen you
may have to change your options.
The blocks vary from year to year depending on demand
and resources.
“People with A level Maths go on to earn significantly more than their
peers with equivalent qualifications in different subjects.”
(Vignoles and Dottam, 1999).
Even those with grade E earn 8% more on average. In other words, a post
– 16 course in Maths could be considered desirable for any career choice.
A2 Mathematics is “preferred” or “required” for a number of degree
choices. Obvious examples are degrees in Mathematics, Medicine,
Sciences, ICT and Economics.
Further Requirements
context, you may consider a vocational A level in either leisure and
recreation or travel and tourism.
Alternatively, there are many careers that build upon the BTEC in
travel and tourism, such as working in a travel agency, theme park or
leisure centre. Some areas of employment may have further learning
opportunities within them, for example modern apprenticeships.
Further Requirements
All students taking this course must be prepared to work independently
and meet deadlines. The subject involves considerable writing and
research so an interest in English would be an advantage.
This course is 100% coursework, there are no examinations.
