Penn State Game Day - FRIDAY, October 7, 2011 - 2
MAILBAG BY NEIL RUDEL
Penn State fans growing
tired of lack of offense
Sorting through the Blue and
White mailbag in search of a
red-zone offense:
Neil:
When is the last time Penn State fielded a
4-1 team where the fans were calling for the
coach’s head Will all be forgiven if Penn
State knocks off the Hawkeyes
How does Penn State’s 2011 offense
compare to the famed 2004 team that produced
the 6-4 loss to the Hawkeyes
Incredibly, I am losing patience and faith
with each Penn State win.
How is that possible
Mark Patla
Plainsboro, N.J.
Mark:
Never, depends, the receivers this year are
better.
Neil:
Is it time to look beyond the Penn State
two-quarterback merry-go round that is not
working and ask who is behind the two who
might be able to become the starter
Could it be any worse than what we saw
this past Saturday
Will Walk
Spring, Texas
Will:
Sure it could be worse. McGloin did
throw for 200 yards and stretched the field.
Neil:
Frustration set in as I was watching the
game Saturday. I ran the channels, and lo
and behold, I ran into a football game,
Texas A&M-Arkansas, and it’s a pleasure
to see players who know football.
Versatility and intelligence makes for a
jelled team.
I used to train hunting dogs, and an older
man once told me, ‘remember you have to
be smarter than the dog.’ I imagine this applies
to young men also.
Some high school coaches are very smart
and inventive, which escapes Penn State
coaches. When fans start dropping their
tickets, (which a few have) maybe then
changes will happen quickly.
Keep Joe as a figurehead only and dump
the rest.
Harold J. Geise
Lock Haven
Harold:
Joe has been kept as a figurehead.
Neil:
Starting Bolden just wastes a possession
or two and kills offensive momentum at the
start of the game. When will it stop
Bill Dincher
Lawrenceville
Bill:
Maybe Saturday, but don’t bet on it.
Neil:
Playing either QB consistently is far better
than playing both. The cost of acting out
JoePa’s soap opera of choice on the field is
pretty high. Rotating QBs wastes time getting
the QB into a rhythm, destroys the
team’s rhythm and symbiosis, reduces performance
consistency, creates a QB scapegoat
and increases general confusion.
Speaking from experience, as one ages,
the ability to make and execute decisions
becomes more difficult. The typical behavior
is just to defer the hard or close calls. Paterno
shows all the symptoms of this.
Marty Harris
Symbiosis You sound like Bill Kibler.
You think you have problems at PSU
Line: Penn State is a 4-point favorite..
Inside the line: In their last five games as
a road dog, Hawkeyes are 4-1 vs. number,
including 21-10 outright win at PSU in
2009 when Lions were spotting 9 ... Iowa is
also 46-31-3 against the spot in Big Ten
games over past 10 years and have covered
last three vs. Lions ... Nits are 3-11 vs.
number in their last 14 games as home favorite
and 11-19 vs. spot in last three seasons,
including goose egg so far this year.
Prediction: Iowa 17, Penn State 13
Comment: Here’s state of PSU: If Lions
win, it’s a pleasant surprise.
Although he flew under the radar and
was the last recruit in Penn State’s 2011
recruiting class, Adrian Amos has been
one of the first true freshmen to make a big
impact for the Nittany Lions this season.
Amos played in the Lions’ opener with
Indiana State and intercepted a pass. Amos
came to Penn State as a safety, but he was
moved to corner, where he almost immediately
drew raves and comparisons to NFL
prospect D’Anton Lynn.
Amos probably won’t be the only young
Lion seeing a great deal of playing time in
the secondary in the next couple of years.
With Lynn, Drew Astorino, Nick Sukay
and Chaz Powell all graduating, defensive
back was looked upon as one of the biggest
areas of need in this recruiting class and a
place where early playing time could be
available.
Three defensive backs have already committed
to Penn State — four if you believe
Camren Williams will start out at safety
before eventually growing into a linebacker
— and the Lions are expected to
bring in at least one more by signing day in
February.
The prize of the three is Armani Reeves,
a four-star cornerback prospect and
Williams’ teammate at Catholic Memorial
School in West Roxbury, Mass. He’s
ranked by some recruiting services as one
of the top 100 players in this senior class.
Reeves might not be quite the 5-foot-11
that his height is listed, but he plays very
big. Heading into this week, he’s scored
six touchdowns in his last five quarters. In
his last game, he rushed for 110 yards and
two touchdowns on two carries while also
grabbing a touchdown pass. The cousin of
NBA legend Charles Barkley, Reeves has
run the 40-yard dash in 4.41 seconds and
Reeves had around 20 scholarship offers
coming from as far away as Stanford. He
eventually picked Penn State over Michigan
and Notre Dame.
The Lions’ other two defensive back recruits
also are from New England private
schools: Connecticut’s Malik Golden and
New Hampshire’s Jake Kiley.
Golden is a bigger cornerback, going 6-1
and about 185. He picked Penn State over
Iowa, UConn and Boston College.
Golden had a big game with 302 rushing
and receiving yards against Kiley’s team in
the Dan Rorke Bowl. Kiley has very similar
measurables to those of Golden — he’s
6-1, 176 and both run the 40 in just above
4.5 — but he has a reputation as a big hitter
and might get his first looks at safety.
Kiley’s recruitment and numbers are
reminiscent of Amos, too, so it wouldn’t
be out of line to see him at corner, either.
Penn State is still pursuing a couple of
safeties that could wrap of its defensive
back class for this year. The names of
De’metrious Cox and Bam Bradley are the
two most often linked with the Lions.
Cox is a rangy 6-1, 192-pound four-star
prospect from Terrelle Pryor’s alma mater
of Jeannette, where he plays quarterback
on offense. Most feel the Lions lead for
him, but Pitt, Michigan State and Michigan
would like to have him, too, and he just
had a good unofficial visit to Wisconsin to
see Badgers beat up Nebraska.
Bradley is a 6-2, 200-pound three-star
prospect from Trotwood Madison High
School in Ohio. He’s still fairly open with
Pitt, Stanford and Arizona among his other
colleges. He has a reputation as a big hitter.
MEDIA NOTEBOOK
Special guests to
be in attendance
By STEVE SAMPSELL
Special to Gameday
When Penn State plays host to Iowa this weekend, several special
guests will be in Happy Valley.
Among the visitors will be Dan Patrick, a senior writer for Sports
Illustrated best known for his TV work as a host for NBC Sports and
for his weekday syndicated radio program, “The Dan Patrick Show.”
Before that, he worked at ESPN.
He’ll join Penn State Heisman Trophy winner John Cappelletti for
a “chalk talk.”
Also, members of Penn State’s 1986 national championship team
will be in town during the week and will be honored during Saturday’s
game.
Ironically, Jimmy Johnson, the coach of the top-ranked Miami
team that lost to No. 2 Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl to cap that national
championship, talked about the impact of tough loses on
sports teams just last week.
“We had probably the most talented football team in college football
history and turned the ball over and lost,” Johnson said on ES-
PN Radio of that Fiesta Bowl game, which remains the mostwatched
college football game in history.
Goodness … Griese
Fans watching Penn State last week on ESPNU got what their average
and inconsistent team had earned them — an average and inconsistent
broadcast crew.
Play-by-play man Clay Matvick and color commentator Brian
Griese regularly missed things that were obvious to viewers, like
which Penn State quarterback would be playing because he was the
one wearing a helmet and what type of play the coaches had in mind
because of which players were or were not on the field.
In general, Griese sounded like he had not done enough homework.
He was not unprepared to talk about Penn State’s quarterback
situation, though. And as a former quarterback himself, he had an informed
opinion.
Like many, he did not favor Penn State’s platoon approach.
“You see why Joe Paterno is playing two quarterbacks, because he
hasn’t found one,” Griese said. He later addressed the impact of alternating
QBs: “It’s hard on the entire offense when you don’t know
who’s coming in the huddle.”
JayPa focus
As pre- and post-game callers to Penn State hotline shows regularly
rail about the team’s quarterbacks coach, the cynic in me wonders
how many of them would gladly work in their family business, for
their father, if given the chance.
GIGERʼS GAME
BREAKDOWN
PENN STATE
Will this finally be the week Matt Mc-
Gloin starts at QB Given how badly
he has outplayed Rob Bolden, why is
there still a QB debate Whoever
starts, remember, even a good college
QB like former PSU starter
Daryll Clark struggled badly against
Iowa.
PSU is 5th in nation in total defense,
but it hasn’t faced this good of a passing
team. CB D’Anton Lynn (concussion)
is doubtful, and CB Stephon
Morris (ankle) is probable. Lions often
fail to get pressure on QB but
must get in Vandenberg’s face.
Anthony Fera has single-handedly
saved PSU’s kicking game. The
reigning Big Ten special teams player
of the week is 4-of-5 on FGs, averaging
43.6 yards per punt and also
handles kickoffs. Blocked punt for TD
in 2009 one of series’ biggest plays.
Joe Paterno has enjoyed great success
against most coaches, but Kirk
Ferentz isn’t one of them. The Iowa
coach is 8-2 against JoePa. PSU just
hasn’t been able to figure out a way
to match Hawkeyes’ physical play, intensity
and fundamental execution.
OFFENSE
DEFENSE
SPECIAL TEAMS
COACHING/INTANGIBLES
IOWA
QB James Vandenberg presents a
major problem for PSU’s secondary.
He completes 63 percent, averages
274 yards per game and has 10 TDs
with only 1 INT. RB Marcus Coker
(94 ypg) and WR Marvin McNutt (103
ypg, 4 TDs) dangerous.
Iowa has dominated PSU the past two
years (13 points total), but stud DE
Adrian Clayborn and standout S Tyler
Sash are now in the NFL. Gave up 44
points in 3 OT loss to Iowa State and
27 to Pitt. Its best defense is fact that
PSU’s offense is so bad.
PK Mike Meyer 8-of-10 on FGs with
long of 50 and is 2-of-4 beyond 40
yards. P Eric Guthrie is third in Big
Ten, averaging 44.9 yards (Fera is
4th). Iowa has returned only 5 punts
all season, so that unit hasn’t been
tested and could be prone to mistakes.
There’s no secret to Ferentz’s philosophy.
He plays smashmouth football,
tries to avoid mistakes and is calm
and confident his team can win close
games in the fourth quarter. That
calming influence has to have a positive
impact on his players.
PREDICTION: Iowaʼs passing game will be too much for PSU, which hasnʼt really been tested in the secondary by a quality
quarterback. IOWA 23, PENN STATE 13
