UNU Rector Hans van Ginkel presents a certificate of completion to a UNU/IC student<br />
biotechnology-related health issues, bioethics, biosafety,<br />
bioinformatics <strong>and</strong> genomics. In 2002, 12 scholarships<br />
were provided, <strong>and</strong> the programme organized six highlevel<br />
courses <strong>and</strong> one specialized lecture for a total of 99<br />
participants (66 women <strong>and</strong> 33 men), mainly from the<br />
Latin American region.<br />
<strong>Environment</strong>al Management<br />
In collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation<br />
Agency, UNU/IAS co-organized five one- <strong>and</strong> two-day<br />
courses in 2002: <strong>Environment</strong> Policy <strong>and</strong> <strong>Environment</strong>al<br />
Management System (18–19 June), Heavy Metal <strong>and</strong><br />
Other Substance Pollution Control (12 July),<br />
<strong>Environment</strong>al Education Training for NGO Staff in<br />
Indonesia (15 July), The Role of Distance Learning in<br />
Support of <strong>Environment</strong>al Education (9 October) <strong>and</strong><br />
Ecosystem Monitoring (29 October).<br />
Long-duration Training Programmes<br />
Biodiversity<br />
UNU Centre cooperates with the University of Ghent to<br />
provide professionals in the fields of monitoring,<br />
conservation <strong>and</strong> management of biological diversity in<br />
Fisheries<br />
The six-month UNU<br />
Fisheries Training<br />
Programme<br />
(UNU/FTP) provides<br />
advanced training in<br />
various fisheriesrelated<br />
areas to fisheries specialists from the public, private<br />
<strong>and</strong> academic sectors. Provincial fisheries administrators,<br />
fisheries scientists <strong>and</strong> operational managers, economists,<br />
planners <strong>and</strong> technical personnel receive in-depth,<br />
individualized training in fisheries policy <strong>and</strong> planning;<br />
marine <strong>and</strong> inl<strong>and</strong> waters resources assessment <strong>and</strong><br />
monitoring; quality management of fish h<strong>and</strong>ling <strong>and</strong><br />
processing; management of fisheries companies <strong>and</strong><br />
marketing; fishing technology; fleet operations;<br />
aquaculture; or environmental protection assessment <strong>and</strong><br />
monitoring. Nineteen fellows (nine of them women) from<br />
13 developing countries joined the programme in August.<br />
Geothermal Energy<br />
The UNU Geothermal Training Programme (UNU/GTP) is<br />
operated at the National Energy Authority of Icel<strong>and</strong>,<br />
which has been an Associated Institution of the UNU since<br />
1979. The main goal of the UNU/GTP is to develop<br />
capacity in the sustainable use of geothermal energy<br />
resources. The aim is to assist developing <strong>and</strong> transition<br />
countries with significant geothermal potential in building<br />
up groups of local specialists in most aspects of geothermal<br />
exploration <strong>and</strong> development. Since 1979, 277 scientists<br />
<strong>and</strong> engineers from about 40 countries have completed the<br />
annual six-month training courses, which include<br />
