BOARDERS’ BITZ
Welcome to “Boarders’ Bitz”, a column designed to keep parents
abreast of developments in Boarding.
The Year 12 2012 boarding cohort will attend a special
presentation titled “Getting Organised for the HSC:
Practical guidelines to maximise learning”. The
presentation will be an informal gathering to share with students
some fundamental study skills and how to best prepare for Year
12 generally.
This presentation will be unique as it will target students in their
final year of schooling and, with Boarding Leaders involved,
hopefully develop and reinforce a supportive and productive network. The presentation will mostly
benefit those who may be underachieving, disorganised, looking for strategies to study and/or generally
lacking motivation.
The aim of the presentation is to encourage students to think about their learning and to maximise their
final year at school. We also want them to consider some key strategies about how they can best study
in what will no doubt be a demanding and, at times, stressful year.
There will be time to discuss, reflect and interact with the material (booklet of the presentation) and
with each other. This opportunity to discuss and share is, I believe, a powerful medium to get on the
same page and working as a team.
The likely topics will be:
Key goals to learning
Key study skills
Looking after yourself – achieving a balance (presented by Bruce Paine – Counsellor)
Study programmes and yearly planners
Preparing for the holidays
The presentation will be held over two nights for both campuses.
PLC site girls on Thursday 17 th November 6pm to 7:30pm in PLC Chapel
Wolaroi site boys Wednesday 23 rd November 6pm to 7:30pm in the Performance Theatre.
Your Boarding leaders will ensure they attend this evening. A small charge ($5) will be placed on your
child’s account to cover the production of a course booklet. Students are asked to bring a bottle of
water and pencil.
I would also like to add, that if you are in the area and wish to attend, please feel free to do so. I ask
that you RSVP and notify Sally Rattray-Wood via email srattray@kws.nsw.edu.au or call 6392 0325 by
14 th November 2011.
For more information, please do not hesitate to contact me or the Director of Learning, Mr Yooie
Choi.
Thank you to the many boarding parents who were able to attend the Boarding Parents’
Committee Annual General Meeting, which was held on Sunday. It was a very productive meeting and
your contributions were very much appreciated. I would like to thank Mr Hiram Marr and Mrs Patty
Webb for the contributions to Boarding at Kinross Wolaroi over the past years, as they step down
from their respective positions as Convenor and Secretary of the committee. Following elections of
Sunday, I would like to congratulate and welcome the new Convenor, Mr Alan Coles and the new
Secretary, Mr Mark Olson and I thank them for their ongoing interest in the KWS Boarding community.
Mr Hiram Marr will remain on the Committee as Deputy-Convenor. I look forward to working with all
members of the committee in the coming year.
Thank you to boarding parents Mrs Jennifer Jones, and Mrs Joanne Coles for the organisation of
the farewell picnic luncheon for retiring Head of Loader House, Mrs Robyne Ridge. Their efforts were
greatly appreciated as the luncheon provided a great opportunity for our parents and families to wish
Mrs Ridge well for her upcoming retirement.
