The Centurion football team entered Friday
night’s game as 10-point underdogs, but made
a statement to the Bardstown Tigers, District 4
and the state of Kentucky, that the CAL Centurion
is no dog and an army of Centurions is a
force to be feared. CAL handed the Tigers
their first loss of the season, advancing a game
closer to claiming another District 4 championship.
The game began with hard hits in the trenches as Chad Meredith and John
Popovich met Bardstown runners at the line of scrimmage, turning forward
progress into hasty retreat. Six plays into the first drive, Popovich took the
ball from the district’s top-ranked offense with a fumble recovery.
The CAL offense then flexed its muscle
with Nick Payne following a spirited
offensive line into the open field where
his quick moves escaped downfield defenders
for the first touchdown of the game. Nathan Bader followed with a
perfect extra point kick, bringing the score to 7-0 early in the first quarter.
After another suffocating CAL defensive series, the offense took to the
air. Nathan Christmas connected with Chad Lewellyn on a 36-yard pass,
followed by a 48-yard touchdown aided by Lewellyn’s quick footwork after
the catch.
Lewellyn and Payne both added second quarter receiving and rushing
touchdowns respectively, pushing the score to 27-0 with one final Bardstown
possession of the first half. Zach Passafiume closed the first half
with a 12-yard tackle for a Bardstown loss, capping two quarters of a defensive
statement led by senior Chad Meredith.
The second half turned to special teams to make a statement when Lewellyn
took the kick-off 85 yards for a touchdown. Austin Kurnick took a punt
return later in the half 80 yards for a touchdown that, after Bader’s successful
extra point, put CAL up 41-0: two rushing TD’s; two passing TD’s;
two special teams TD’s.
Bardstown’s top ranked offense turned the ball over twice, once to
Popovich and another time to Blake Chelf on a fumble. Chelf, Meredith
and Rider Sparrow accounted for 10 or more tackles each, holding the Tigers’
offense to only a touchdown with seven seconds to go in the
game. The final score: CAL 41 Bardstown 6.
CAL takes this momentum into a game Friday in which DeSales is
CAL 2 vs Nelson County 0
Following Monday evening’s rainout game at Oldham County, the Lady Centurions
(9-4-5) hosted Region 5 leader, Nelson County HS (12-6-0), on Tuesday,
October 2 at the English Station Campus. Dominating play on both ends of the
field, CAL marched to a convincing 2-0 victory with goals by Kenzie Dannelly
and Kendall Moore; coupled by the outstanding goal keeping of Corinne
Warlick and Molly Andres who recorded their 5 th shutout of the season.
CAL spread the field early in the opening half and had multiple opportunities
to score. Shots by Kenzie Dannelly, Kate Joss and Haleigh Fortuna were
turned aside by the Nelson County keeper who recorded seven saves by
halftime. Sydney Mathis, Lindsay Dunn, and Faith Shepherd found room
to drive the ball down the wings for numerous crosses into the box, pinning
the Nelson County defenders deep in their own zone for most of the half.
The defense, led by Clare Andres, Annie Beanblossom, Kendall
Moore and Laura English were tested early, as Nelson County tried repeatedly to slip there speedy forwards
behind the back line. Midfielders Catherine Collins, Sarah Quinton, and Meg Mintman battled in the middle
to disrupt Nelson County’s passing lanes and thwart their attempt to play the ball over top of the Lady
Centurion defense.
With 6:26 remaining in the half, Kenzie Dannelly beat two Nelson County defenders on the baseline and
fired a low hard shot that bounded off of the keeper, giving CAL a 1-0 lead. The half ended with CAL clearly
in charge of the field but with only a slim scoring advantage.
CAL started the 2 nd half with a strong offensive effort, and with 33:42
left, Kenzie Dannelly crushed a shot that hit the crossbar. Less than two
minutes later, at the 31:23 mark, Kendall Moore pushed up from her defensive
wing position and fired a shot from just outside the 18-yard line that
beat the Nelson County keeper for a 2-0 CAL lead. Moore’s goal sealed the
victory for the Lady Centurions; the 9 th of the season. (continued on next page)
CAL 9 vs KCD 1 – SENIOR NIGHT
The Lady Centurions rode to an easy 9-1 victory
over Kentucky Country Day, on an emotional
Thursday evening match at English Station, as the
players and fans paid tribute to the five Seniors
who have led CAL to back-to-back Region Championships.
Pre-game ceremonies for Clare Andres,
Catherine Collins, Kate Joss, Kendall
Moore, and Taylor Smith, sponsored by the junior class parents, set a new
standard for excellence and provide players, friends and families with a lifetime of
lasting memories.
Kate Joss, honored the next day as CAL’s 2012
Homecoming Queen, got the squad off to a
quick start volleying in a perfect cross
from Syndey Mathis in the first 3 minutes of
the half, and then added her second of three
goals at the 28:47 mark for a 2-0 lead. Also
adding first half goals wereKenzie Dannelly
and Haleigh Fortuna. With 18:32 still left in
the period, CAL had a commanding 5-0 lead.
Senior Night also saw the return of injured senior All-State goalie, Taylor Smith, who
was allowed a 15 second “cameo” appearance to begin the game to the delight of her
adoring teammates and fans. Taylor has continued to make great progress in rehabilitating
her shoulder and is expected to return to the field for her Club team in late fall.
The second half started with the Lady Centurions
still on the attack. Senior Clare Andres scored in
the first 30 seconds of the half and followed up with
her second goal less than 90 seconds later for a 7-0 CAL lead. Three minutes later,
with 33:38 remaining in the half, senior Catherine Collins scored on a low shot into
the left corner for a 8-0 advantage. Rounding out the scoring for the evening was
freshmen Allie Blackburn who scored the 9 th and final CAL goal of the evening.
SENIORS HONORED AND VICTORIES WON IN THE BATTLES OF LEXINGTON!
This week the Centurions took on Lexington Catholic at home, and then made a road trip to Lexington
Christian. Prior to the Tuesday night match, CAL also honored its two seniors, Miranda
Hunley and Hannah Stanfield, as well as five seniors from Lexington Catholic. These ladies
will, no doubt, be missed.
Miranda, daughter of Monte and Donna Hundley, has
attended CAL since Kindergarten and played volleyball
since elementary school. Says Coach Patty Ernst, “she has been a pleasure to
coach because she always ‘keeps it real.’ She encourages her teammates on and off
the court. Miranda’s been a great addition to our team this year as she adds a lot of fire
power to the outside hitting position.” Her parents would like her to know, “it will be
hard not seeing you on the court as part of the CAL volleyball team and no longer leading
the life of volleyball parents.” Dad asks, “What will we do with all our time”
Though she’s not yet chosen a college, Miranda intends to major in Biblical studies.
Hannah, daughter of Darin and Melissa Stanfield, has attended CAL since the 3 rd grade
and has played volleyball the entire time. Says Coach Patty Ernst, “she always makes
things entertaining and has something ‘goofy’ to add when the situation becomes too
intense. Hannah is a hard-working athlete with a heart for the game, and she strives to
get better each day.” Her parents would like her to know,
“we are certainly proud of the volleyball player you have become, but the Light that
shines from within by your heart is what makes us most proud. Seventeen years ago,
God decided to send you to challenge us to become more committed and more like
HIM. You often have shown us the way by your sweet, loving, forgiving, gracious, merciful spirit! We love you! WOODA,
WOODA, WOODA!” P.S. Dad says, “you have to see it, you have to find the ball!” Hannah intends to major in elementary education,
but has yet to pick her college.
The bittersweet Senior Night was made complete with a best two of three match against Lexington
Catholic. CAL took the first set convincingly, 25-10. The score was tied nine times in
set 2, but Lexington Catholic prevailed, 25-22. In set three, Lexington Catholic took the early
lead, but CAL was able to tie at point 16 and go on to win the set and match, 25-22.
CAL then took a road trip to Lexington Thursday night, where the Lexington Christian Eagles
proved to be an equally-matched rival. Reminiscent of Tuesday, the Eagles honored their four
seniors as well as Hannah and Miranda. In game play, CAL appeared to be the stronger team
in sets one and two, winning easily, 25-18, 25-19. In set three, the Eagles turned it on, however. Playing tricks with their deep
court serves and strong blocks and kills by their powerful seniors, the Eagles won the set 25-19, resulting in a fourth game. Game
How did you come to CAL I started coaching intramural flag football, then moved up to coaching middle
school basketball and football. My son got a cyst on his brain and football was not longer an option. He
wanted to find a fall sport to play so I decided to coach him in golf.
What motivates you to coach The kids by far and away. I get more out of it than they do. It’s great to impact
the lives of young people in a world that constantly pulls them in the wrong direction.
How do you use golf to disciple your players Golf is a great life teacher. There is a tremendous amount of
integrity involved in an individual sport that is played in a team format. You have to lift up and support teammates
even when you don’t shoot a good round. You also have five hours to spend with your competitors.
We talk to our players about impacting others for Jesus during that time.
What are your passions in ministry I have a heart for men’s ministry and discipling young men. I once
thought faith was an individual thing. I’ve concluded that men need other men to challenge, guide, and encourage
each other. You can’t do it on your own.
What spiritual lessons can be taught or learned through golf One mistake in a round doesn’t define who you
are as a player. You are not going to have the best day every time you go out there. We all make mistakes
but as long as you remain Christ centered and look to God’s Word you are going to be OK.
Jonathan has a positive attitude, a strong work ethic, and
American football coach, he has a "quiet strength." But as one
of that strength, especially as he became more and
His physical size was intimidating, and his core strength also
anyone who has watched him play can't help but notice the
way he can change the course of a game, just by the work rate,
work ethic is second to none. Sheldon impresses by analyzing
the opponent and making enlightening observations for the
his tenacity on the field speaks for himself. His drive is to never
The CAL Girls JV Soccer Team has been so blessed with great weather this season- but not last Monday
season and really bonded as a team. Here is a shout out for the team: Saxby Spencer, Nicole Anthanasakes,
CAL 8TH GRADE GIRLS FIELD HOCKEY CONTINUES WINNING WAYS!
CAL 3 - Meyzeek 0
This was a second round tournament game at CAL and the 8th grade girls did not disappoint. They jumped
on Meyzeek quickly with a goal from Taylor Curran early in the game. At halftime, the lady Centurions held
onto their 1-0 lead - in large part due to very Good goalie play by Meyzeek.
In the second half CAL took control with goals by Allie grace Joyner and Ella Loyd. Katie Jenkins had a great
backhand assist across the circle to Ella for the final goal in route to the 3-0 win…just how Coach Cooper and
Coach Joyner drew it up.
The CAL defense deserves a shout out for continuing their dominance. They have still only given up 1 goal
all year.
SKILLFUL STICKS, SUFFOCATING STOPS, & SOLID SCORES SEND SEVENTH GRADE
SQUAD TO CITY SEMIS!
CAL’s 7th Grade Field Hockey squad opened the post season tournament with an
impressive team effort against Noe Middle School. Steady, methodical attacks
and a stifling defense led to a 6-0 win, and a slot in the City’s Final Four against
Kammerrer.
Once again last Thursday afternoon, CAL’s defenders and mid-fielders repelled
every attempted advance by the opposing attackers, and CAL’s relentless offensive
pressure kept most of the game in or around CAL’s scoring circle. Crisp
passing between forwards led to numerous scoring chances, with a half dozen
resulting in goals.
On defense, goalie Sam Minrath never
faced a Noe shot, and CAL’s defenders never gave up a penalty corner
chance to Noe. CAL’s stingy defense was led on the point by Tori
Haygood and Mackenzie Mellen, with Emily Warlick also contributing
from the back line.
CAL’s six goals included two outside drives, two scrambles, and two
breakaways. The outside scoring drives were by Claire Thomas on a
feed from Jamie Wright, and Wright on a penalty corner insert
from Rachel Proffit. The scrambles included Elise Stivers cleaning up
on a corner play; and Wright and Thomas teaming up for the game’s opening goal. The breakaway goals featured
Alex Walker feeding a crisp pass to Stivers, who drove it home; and Sloan Redding with a nifty crossing
feed to Anna Lee Holland for the score!
Most impressive in this game was the solid team play by all of CAL’s
girls. The passing and tackling skills, offensive and defensive positioning,
and on-field communication added up to one of the best displays of
teamwork this year. Another effort like last week’s will be needed on
Friday night, when CAL faces a tough and improving Kammerrer squad
on their home View field. CAL At High stake School is a berth in sports the City LIVE, Finals!
CENTURIONS VS PATRIOTS
CAL defense showed up in a big way on Saturday, October 6 th against the Patriots at Seneca High School.
Big blocking and tackling by our defense impressed the fans from start to finish. After a Patriot kick off and
an unsuccessful attempt by CAL the Patriots had a strong run at the goal early in the game. Impressive tackles
by Charles Austin Sams and Nic Geary offered resistance, but the Patriots pushed through for an early
touchdown in the 1 st quarter with a completed pass for the extra point. The score was Patriots 7, CAL 0. A
second attempt at goal resulted in a 21 yard CAL punt to the 30 yard line by Elijah Smith. Back on defense
CAL had TWO sacks by Luke Chambers and Justin Howes for a total loss of 9 yards and the Patriots turned
the ball over on a loss of downs. A quick interception had CAL back on defense where we held the Patriots
for another turnover on downs. Offense had a decent push down the field with rushing yards by Smith, Sams,
Palumbino, and Paulson but turned the ball over on loss of downs. Our defense held strong with tackles by
Sams, Graham, Crenshaw, Chambers, and Paulson. At the end of the half it was still Patriots 7, CAL 0.
Our offense struggled against the Patriot’s defense in the 2 nd half, but we did gain rushing yards with Elijah
Smith and Anthony Palumbino. On defense we had an exciting interception and impressive rush down the
field for an almost TD by Charles Austin Sams, but there was interference called on the play. Another QB
sack by Harrison Zimmerer with a 6 yard loss and tackles by Crenshaw, Griffin, Hornback, and McKinley
held the Patriots back, but in the last minute of the game the Patriots ran for a touchdown on the 4 th down
with :59 seconds in the 4 th quarter. CAL stopped the extra point for a final score Patriots 13, CAL 0.
CAL played a strong game against this excellent team. GO CAL!
OFFENSE EFFECTIVE, DEFENSE OPPORTUNISTIC
In what would set a a league record for longest...game...ever, at a solid two hours, the 3rd
and 4th grade football team took on the Louisville Oilers this past Saturday at home. The
temperatures were cooler but the team stayed hot, despite two consecutive cancellations.
The Oilers opened the first drive of the game with a 6 yard run. The defense forced a fumble
on the next play, and after a momentary scramble, their running back ran 51 yards for a
touch down. After an unsuccessful conversion, the visitors led 6-0 with 7:29 to play in the
first.
The first Centurion drive of the game was set up nicely by Joshua Spainhour's 15 yard return.
On the first play from scrimmage William Paar peeled off a 23 yard run. Tyler Lagastee then
hit Trey Jorgensen for a 22 yard pass that Jorgensen took to the one. William Paar capped the
scoring drive from one yard out. With a successful conversion the Centurions went up 7-6 with
6:32 left in the first.
The Oilers could not convert on a fourth down pass play that was nearly intercepted by Keaton
Foster. This would be foreshadowing for three coming Centurion interceptions!
Cal took over on the Oiler 49. On their second snap Conner Haun ripped off a 26 yard run to the 17. Brandt Babin took it to the
house on the next play. The conversion was no good but the home team led 12-7 with 1:50 still left in the first.
Short gain by 31-8 for 26 to 17
Cal kicked off to the Oilers, but again turned them away on four downs. After a loss on two
plays, Reece Vincent chased an Oiler out of bounds for a five yard loss, setting up a long
fourth down. The ensuing pass was picked off by Brock Ruckriegel - who's named would be
called a lot during the game!
On the first play after the turnover on downs, Babin broke 3 tackles to grab a 42 yard touchdown!
the conversion was good and CAL led 19-7.
The Oilers would score on their next possession making it 19-13. However, the Centurions
would march right back down the field with big runs by Babin, Lagastee, and the eventual TD by Conner Haun- thanks to superb
blocking by their offensive line. The conversion would be good, bringing the score to 26-13 halfway through the second quarter -
which would remain till half. (Yea...long half...)
CAL would receive to open the second half, but eventually turn it over on downs.
The Oilers would take over on their own 48, but after a big stop by Ruckriegel, Spainhour picked the next pass for the home team's
second interception!
From their own 43, after a modest first down gain, Paar had a run of 20 and 19 behind more solid blocking by the offensive line!
in the palm of your Hand
The drive would stall after a holding penalty and the home team would turn the ball over on downs inside the red zone.
The score was still 26-13 at the end of the third with the Oilers moving the ball.
