Two simple words that translate the woofs, meows, chirps and snuffles of gratitude we hear each day <strong>for</strong> <strong>you</strong>r<br />
tremendous generosity and unwavering support of the mission and the animals whose lives <strong>you</strong> change <strong>for</strong> the better.<br />
In 2008 the <strong>Animal</strong> <strong>Humane</strong> <strong>Society</strong> served as an invaluable community resource, providing care and services <strong>for</strong> 37,622 animals<br />
of which 34,752 were companion animals and 2,910 were wildlife. This ef<strong>for</strong>t requires a true partnership between AHS and the<br />
community.<br />
You have been a valued partner in a community that has stepped up to adopt, share financial resources, work and volunteer, use<br />
our pet training and boarding services, and ultimately advocate on behalf of animals and the human-animal bond.<br />
Together we are finding homes <strong>for</strong> animals, working to reduce the number of animals that are orphaned and need a second<br />
chance and, most importantly, working toward reducing euthanasia of healthy and treatable animals. This is the core of what we<br />
do. Because of <strong>you</strong>, the <strong>Animal</strong> <strong>Humane</strong> <strong>Society</strong> is a resource <strong>for</strong> all the stages of an animal’s life–nurturing bonds and keeping<br />
pets in their homes <strong>for</strong> life.<br />

escue on the road<br />
When animals needed help in Cedar Rapids, Iowa after the floods in July of 2008, AHS was there to assist. Our<br />
team helped to care <strong>for</strong> the more than 600 displaced animals. On a second trip to Iowa, our team returned with<br />
some of the animals that had not been reclaimed by their owners. Thirty-six found new homes with AHS<br />
adopters.<br />
Two months later we dispatched a team to Texas to help with the rescue ef<strong>for</strong>ts after Hurricane Ike. Our team<br />
cared <strong>for</strong> injured wildlife and pledged to return to help 118 dogs that were displaced. We transported 59 dogs<br />
and enlisted the support of Northwest Airlines who helped bring an additional 59 dogs to safety at AHS<br />
locations.<br />

centers. As long as the animal remains in good health and temperament, it is available until it is adopted.<br />

We’re committed to helping people keep animals in their homes and helping pet owners overcome challenges.<br />
We designed and developed our behavior and training programs based on the in<strong>for</strong>mation we heard from<br />
people who needed to surrender their animals—and built a program that helps pet owners create a lasting<br />
relationship with their pets. More than 40 classes and socialization opportunities were offered weekly<br />
including Levels classes, small dog and shy dog playgroups, puppy training, therapy dog training and tricks<br />
and games. Renowned training and behavioral expert Tamar Gellar has called our program among the best in<br />
the country.<br />

programs focus on topics such as pet responsibility, animal classification, urban wildlife, endangered species,<br />
and animal communication and bite prevention. Last year, 11,398 students received these programs. In<br />
addition, 279 <strong>you</strong>ng people learned about life inside an animal welfare organization through Unleashed, AHS’s<br />

AHS is an open admission organization<br />
with a strong belief in providing services<br />

many animals come to us who we cannot<br />
safely and responsibly place in homes. In<br />
addition, there are many more animals<br />
surrendered by the community than there<br />
is capacity <strong>for</strong> rehoming in the community.<br />
In 2008, AHS staff made the difficult and<br />
heart-wrenching decision to euthanize<br />
12,330 animals. In addition, people sought<br />
our services <strong>for</strong> end-of-life euthanasia <strong>for</strong><br />
2,953 animals in place of private veterinary<br />

Wildlife<br />
In addition to domestic animals, AHS operates a wildlife rescue program. Through our partnership with Wildlife Rehabilitation and Release,<br />

combined. In 2008, the <strong>Animal</strong> <strong>Humane</strong> <strong>Society</strong><br />
exceeded this standard by directing 74% of our expense back into<br />

Population served:<br />
<strong>Animal</strong> <strong>Humane</strong> <strong>Society</strong> serves pets and the public from its facilities<br />
in Anoka, Hennepin, Ramsey, Washington and Wright Counties. The<br />
<strong>Humane</strong> Investigations unit provides services throughout Minnesota<br />
and western Wisconsin. AHS is a founding member of the Minnesota<br />
Partnership <strong>for</strong> <strong>Animal</strong> Welfare (MnPAW), a coalition of animal<br />
welfare organizations in Minnesota. AHS has partnerships with more<br />
than 60 animal welfare organizations in Minnesota, the University of<br />
Minnesota Veterinary School, animal rescues in Indiana, Ohio,<br />
Oklahoma, Georgia and Iowa and municipal animal control<br />
