<strong>Executive</strong> <strong>Management</strong> <strong>Internship</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Community</strong> College Leadership<br />
Course Number: CCL 868<br />
Course Title: <strong>Internship</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Community</strong> College Leadership (3 credits)<br />
Course Description: This supervised and applied experience will enable students to obta<strong>in</strong><br />
practical experience at a community college as a community college executive level manager<br />
mentors them.<br />
Purpose of Course: The purpose of this course is to allow students to obta<strong>in</strong> hands-on executive<br />
level experience <strong>in</strong> a leadership role <strong>in</strong> a community college sett<strong>in</strong>g. The student will learn about<br />
leadership skills at the community college by observ<strong>in</strong>g his or her site supervisor and by<br />
complet<strong>in</strong>g leadership tasks associated with the site he or she has chosen. By the completion of<br />
the <strong>in</strong>ternship it is expected that the student will feel relatively comfortable <strong>in</strong> the role he or she<br />
has observed and practiced.<br />
Course Objectives/Competencies:<br />
1. To enable students to complete two to four hundred hours of <strong>in</strong>ternship experience at the<br />
community college sett<strong>in</strong>g be<strong>in</strong>g mentored by a site supervisor who is <strong>in</strong> an executive<br />
leadership role at the college.<br />
2. To develop a set of learn<strong>in</strong>g objectives that would be achieved by the completion of a<br />
practical work assignment with<strong>in</strong> a particular adm<strong>in</strong>istrative area <strong>in</strong> a community college<br />
3. To communicate electronically with the <strong>in</strong>tern, the University <strong>Internship</strong> Advisor, and the<br />
Site Supervisor on progress and leadership experiences throughout the <strong>in</strong>ternship.<br />
4. To research and def<strong>in</strong>e specific projects, activities and tasks that provide experiences that<br />
develop personal characteristics of effective leadership.<br />
5. To complete an <strong>in</strong>ternship log by del<strong>in</strong>eat<strong>in</strong>g tasks and total time <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> completion<br />
at the <strong>in</strong>ternship site.<br />
6. To ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> a reflective journal of the <strong>in</strong>ternship experience and the ethical, professional,<br />
multicultural, and legal issues related to the <strong>in</strong>ternship experiences.<br />
7. The site supervisor completes an evaluation based on the goals set at the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of the<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternship.<br />
Course Requirements:<br />
1. Successfully complete a m<strong>in</strong>imum of 200 clock hours of <strong>in</strong>ternship-related activities for a<br />
three-hour credit program that <strong>in</strong>cludes shadow<strong>in</strong>g, observ<strong>in</strong>g and participation <strong>in</strong><br />
projects and leadership tasks.<br />
2. Communicate <strong>in</strong> person or electronically with the University <strong>Internship</strong> Advisor and the<br />
Site Supervisor.<br />
3. Develop leadership objectives based on personal characteristics of effective leadership.<br />
4. Def<strong>in</strong>e activities, projects and tasks based on def<strong>in</strong>ed leadership objectives.<br />
5. Complete and submit the <strong>in</strong>ternship observation log not<strong>in</strong>g tasks, date completed and<br />
total hours <strong>in</strong>volved.<br />
6. Complete reflective journal of <strong>in</strong>ternship as it progresses and submit it at the end of the<br />
semester.

In accordance with university policy, a student who wishes to receive some <strong>in</strong>structional<br />
accommodation, because of a documented sensory and/or learn<strong>in</strong>g disability, should meet with<br />

Attendance:<br />
Students are expected to complete the relevant number of hours at the <strong>in</strong>ternship site.<br />
Grad<strong>in</strong>g:<br />
<strong>Internship</strong> is pass/fail. To pass the <strong>in</strong>ternship students must:<br />
A. Successfully complete a m<strong>in</strong>imum of 200 hours (3 credits) at the <strong>in</strong>ternship site.<br />
B. Communicate regularly with the site supervisor and university <strong>in</strong>ternship supervisor.<br />
C. Be positively evaluated by the <strong>in</strong>ternship site supervisor/mentor.<br />
D. Receive a pass<strong>in</strong>g grade on the development objectives and their results.<br />
E. Receive a pass<strong>in</strong>g grade on the reflective journal.<br />
F. Be positively evaluated by the university <strong>in</strong>ternship supervisor.<br />

This course is <strong>in</strong>tended for those students who do not have experience as a community college<br />
adm<strong>in</strong>istrator and/or those who wish to broaden their adm<strong>in</strong>istrative experience by work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />
another adm<strong>in</strong>istrative area. Students can take six credits of <strong>in</strong>ternship over 2 semesters (300<br />
hours of <strong>in</strong>ternship) or 3 credits of <strong>in</strong>ternship <strong>in</strong> each of two consecutive semesters (150 hours<br />
each semester). Students must take the <strong>in</strong>ternship after complet<strong>in</strong>g 9 credit hours.<br />
